Samuel West and Phyllis Logan star in
Present Laughter
Noël Coward
by
Directed by Stephen Unwin
Two of the UK’s favourite actors star in what
is widely acknowledged to be Noël Coward’s
funniest play. Samuel West, whose acclaimed
credits include Mr Selfridge and many leading
classical roles for the RSC, plays Garry Essendine
and multi award-winning Phyllis Logan, best
known as the housekeeper Mrs Hughes in
Downton Abbey and Lady Jane Felsham in
Lovejoy, plays Monica, his acerbic secretary.
Actor, charmer and diva, Garry Essendine is
determined to disregard his advancing years by
revelling in endless tantrums and casual affairs.
About to depart for Africa, he is besieged by a
bevy of would-be seductresses, not to mention his
long-suffering secretary, his estranged wife, and
an obsessed young playwright. As he attempts
to disentangle himself from their clutches and
demands, the sparkling comedy escalates.

While the Sun Shines
by
Terence Rattigan
Directed by Christopher Luscombe
On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful
Lady Elizabeth, the Earl of Harpenden makes
the mistake of allowing a drunken American
Lieutenant to spend the night in his Albany
apartment. Things start to go wrong the
following morning when the Earl arranges a
little female company for his charming and
mischievous guest in the form of Mabel Crum, a
former girlfriend with a penchant for Americans...
but it is his fiancée, Lady Elizabeth, who turns up
at the flat!
Add into the mix Colbert, a young French officer
who also fancies his chances with Elizabeth, and
her garrulous father, an inveterate gambler, and
the stage is set for hilarious confusion.
In this flurry of crossed-wires and mistaken
identities Rattigan shows himself to be a master
farceur.
While the Sun Shines ran for over one thousand
performances in the West End in the early 1940s,
before transferring to Broadway. The leading critic
of the day, James Agate, described it as “delightful,
a little masterpiece of tingling impertinence”.

FELICITY KENDAL in
A Room with a View
Adapted from E M Forster’s novel by Simon Reade
Directed by Adrian Noble
English rose Lucy Honeychurch is touring Italy
with her prim spinster cousin Charlotte Bartlett
as chaperone. Charlotte is quick to step in when
Lucy makes the mistake of fraternising with the
lower-class Mr Emerson and his son George at
their Florentine pensione. However, when she
witnesses Lucy and George kissing, she has no
option but to whisk Lucy away to Rome. Back
home at the family’s Surrey estate Lucy becomes
engaged to the eminently suitable (but priggish
and pretentious) Cecil Vyse. Charlotte has sworn
Lucy to secrecy over the kiss with George, but
will Lucy be able to repress her feelings when
she discovers that the Emersons have taken a
house in the village?
With its cast of vivid characters, this elegant
comedy written in 1908, is widely recognized
as one of the finest novels of the twentieth
century. The award-winning Merchant Ivory film
adaptation in 1985 was voted number nine in
The Guardian’s list of the best romantic films of
all time.
Imogen Sage
Felicity Kendal plays Charlotte Bartlett. One
of the UK’s most popular actresses, she shot to
fame in The Good Life and has won numerous
awards for her stage work. Her recent visits to
Bath have included Alan Ayckbourn’s Relatively
Speaking and Noël Coward’s Hay Fever both of
which also enjoyed successful West End runs.
The recipient of more than 20 Olivier Award
nominations, Adrian Noble was the Artistic
Director of the RSC from 1990-2003. He recently
directed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The
Tempest for Theatre Royal Bath Productions and

David Suchet.
A former Literary Manager at the RSC, Simon
Reade’s recent adaptations include Pride and
Prejudice (see page 38), Salman Rushdie’s

Stepping Out
by Richard Harris
Directed by Maria Friedman
Amanda Holden heads one of the starriest casts
ever to have stepped out on the Theatre Royal’s
stage in this wonderfully funny and heartwarming comedy which charts the lives of seven
women and one man attempting to tap their
troubles away at a weekly dancing class. Initially
all thumbs and left feet, the group is just getting
to grips with the basics when they are asked to
take part in a charity gala...
Over the course of several months we meet the
group, and all of them have a story to tell. There’s
haughty Vera, mouthy Maxine and uptight Andy;
bubbly Sylvia and shy Dorothy; eager Lynne and
cheerful Rose, and, of course, Geoffrey. At the
piano is the dour Mrs Fraser and spurring them
all on, the ever-patient Mavis.
One of the UK’s best-loved personalities,
Amanda Holden plays Vera. Nominated for an
Olivier Award for Thoroughly Modern Millie, she
also starred in the West End in Shrek the Musical.
She has been a judge on the award-winning
Britain’s Got Talent throughout all of its ten series.

A SEASON OF BAROQUE OPERA FROM VENICE
La Calisto by Francesco Cavalli
Xerxes by George Frideric Handel
WINNER OF THE 2014 OLIVIER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN OPERA
& NOMINATED FOR TWO INTERNATIONAL OPERA AWARDS IN 2015
Venice, the birthplace of opera as we now
know it, was a city of fabulous wealth, learning,
trade and sensuality. The most fantastic of all
its ‘follies’, the marriage of poetry, music and
art, is opera. The olivier Award-winning English
Touring opera returns to Bath for its annual visit
with two of the most entertaining works of all.
La Calisto
Cavalli’s La Calisto irreverently charts the
relations between gods, men and women, in a
score so rich and heady it must have drawn as
many blushes as gasps when first heard.
The infatuation of Jove (George Humphreys)
with the lovely Calisto (Paula Sides) and
the unlikely attraction of virgin Diana
(Catherine Carby) to the handsome youth
Endymion (Tai oney) entangle them in love
wars as comical as they are dangerous.
Xerxes
one of ETo’s most warm-hearted and humorous
productions of recent years, Xerxes, sees
Handel’s astonishing setting of a Venetian
text relocated to the Battle of Britain, with the
Persian king recast as a glamorous princeturned-pilot jealous of his brother’s stronger sex
appeal.
The score is Handel at his best, sometimes
fiery and even explosive, at other times deeply
touching. Julia Riley, Clint van der Linde, Laura
Mitchell and Andrew Slater return in their
original roles, with Peter Brathwaite and
Galina Averina in her company debut, and
Jonathan Peter Kenny directing the spitfire
brilliance of the old Street Band.
Revival, sung in English
ETo’s new production is conducted and directed
by Timothy Nelson, and features a collection of
continuo instruments.

Rambert
Tomorrow and other works
Something wicked this way comes! Rambert
celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2016, returning
to Bath with a stunning programme of virtuoso
dancing and live music, including a new work
inspired by Macbeth.
Tomorrow is a split-stage experience taking
you inside the dark, dangerous world of
Shakespeare’s hero-turned-villain. Seven eerie
‘witches’ perform a danse macabre, their sinister,
spellbinding movements presented alongside
the pivotal moments of the drama. It will make
you see the Scottish Play in a whole new light.
Photos: Tomorrow - Johan Persson; Hydrargyrum – Tristram Kenton
A giant, revolving mirror hangs over the stage in
Hydrargyrum. It offers a different angle to view
the dancers as they morph from a powerful-butanonymous group to defiant-but-vulnerable
individuals.
A third piece looks at the subject of migration. It
uses multimedia projections to create an evershifting backdrop as the dancers dramatise the
mix of hope and fear that make up the migrant
experience of leaving one home to search for
another.
All three original dance works are packed with
powerful images and emotions, making an
utterly distinctive and memorable programme
from Britain’s national dance company.

THE MOST TERRIFYING LIVE THEATRE EXPERIENCE IN THE WORLD
The Woman in Black
Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill
Directed by Robin Herford
Everybody in the theatre can hear
you scream!
“A truly nerve-shredding experience”
Now celebrating its 27th year in the West End,
nearly 8 million people have lived to tell the
tale of one of the most terrifying and successful
theatre events ever staged. In 2012, Susan
Hill’s novel The Woman in Black was released
as a major film, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which
successfully became the highest grossing British
horror film in 20 years. The sequel, The Woman in
Black 2: Angel Of Death came out in 2014.
“Don’t go unless you like being scared
out of your wits” Sunday Mirror
Daily Mail
“The chills are irresistibly effective...a
delicious spell of malevolence and
menace” Time Out
Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s
best-selling novel tells the story of a lawyer
obsessed with a curse that he believes has been
cast over him and his family by the spectre of a
‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to
help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that
grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but
as they reach further into his darkest memories,
they find themselves caught up in a world of
eerie marshes and moaning winds. The border
between make believe and reality starts to blur
and the flesh begins to creep…

Relatively Speaking was Alan Ayckbourn’ s first

Greg only met Ginny a month ago but has
already made up his mind that she’s the girl

Discovering a scribbled address, he follows her
to Buckinghamshire where he finds Philip and
Sheila enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning
breakfast in the garden, but the only thing is –
they’re not Ginny’s parents!

Regent’s Park Theatre presents
Pride and Prejudice
by Jane Austen
Adaped by Simon Reade
Directed by Deborah Bruce
The ultimate romantic comedy, Jane Austen’s
story of the five Bennet sisters and their
relentless pursuit of suitable husbands is one of
the best-loved novels ever written, constantly
topping the polls of favourite books.
When feisty Elizabeth Bennet first meets
handsome bachelor Mr Darcy, she thinks
him arrogant and conceited. When she later
discovers that he has scuppered the relationship
between his friend Bingley and her beloved
sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him
more than ever. in the sparkling comedy of
manners that follows, the family’s lives are
turned upside down as Jane Austen shows the
folly of judging by first impressions and pokes
gentle fun at the affectations and etiquette of
provincial middle-class life.
Pride and Prejudice visits Bath following sell-out
performances at Regent’s Park Theatre, producers
of the recent smash-hits To Kill a Mockingbird and
Lord of the Flies. This much-loved novel is brought
to life as we celebrate the legacy of Jane Austen
in her bicentennial year. Featuring Felicity
Montagu (Alan Partridge, Bridget Jones’s Diary,
The Durrells) as Mrs Bennet, this is Austen “still
dazzling after 200 years” (observer).

beloved novel re-born…elegant and
thoughtful” The Times

GRIFF RHYS JONES stars in
The Miser
The classic comedy by Moliére
Directed by Sean Foley
Designed by Alice Power
Actor, writer, presenter, comedian and two-time
Olivier Award-winner Griff Rhys Jones returns
to the stage in a hilarious new adaption by Sean
Foley and Phil Porter of Moliere’s classic comedy,
The Miser. Griff Rhys Jones has previously been
seen on stage as Fagin in Cameron Mackintosh’s
Oliver!, Toad in the National Theatre’s The Wind in
the Willows and in Feydeau’s An Absolute Turkey.
Fanatical about protecting his wealth, the
paranoid Harpagon (Griff Rhys Jones) suspects
all of trying to filch his fortune, and will go
to any length to protect it. A matchmaker
motivated only by money, he sets his sights
on wealthy spouses for his son, Cléante and
daughter Élise so his riches are safe from their
grubby hands. He, meanwhile, has lost his heart
to the young and beautiful Mariane – a perfect
match with one exception – she has no dowry.
Oh, and one other thing…Mariane has another
suitor who has declared his undying love to
her – none other than Harpagon’s son, Cléante.
And his daughter Élise is similarly undutiful and
madly in love with the impoverished Valère!
With two children in love with penniless
paramours, one beauty loved by both a father
and a son, and a big fortune under threat,
Harpagon’s plans go terribly awry...
As true feelings and identities are revealed
will Harpagon allow his children to follow
their heart, or will his love of gold prove allconsuming? Passion and purse strings go head
to head in this rip-roaring comedy, by France’s
greatest dramatist. This major revival is directed
by Sean Foley (The Painkiller, The Ladykillers,
Jeeves and Wooster), with further star casting to
be announced. Book now to be among the very
first to see this major revival before it hits the
West End.

Christopher, fifteen years old, has an
extraordinary brain – exceptional at maths while
ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has
never ventured alone beyond the end of his
road, he detests being touched and he distrusts
strangers. When he falls under the suspicion of

Half Life
by John Mighton
Directed by Nancy Meckler
This award-winning comedy is a love story
between two elderly residents in a nursing
home. Patrick was a mathematician and codebreaker, Clara is a beautiful innocent with a
fading memory. Will their adult children be able
to come to terms with their own feelings as the
romance between their parents blossoms?
Half Life explores the nature of memory and
aging and the transformative power of love with
humour and tenderness.
Nancy Meckler returns to the Ustinov Studio
having directed the hugely-acclaimed Play
Strindberg in the 2014 season of Three Black
Comedies. The first woman to direct at the
National Theatre (with Who’s Afraid of Virginia
Woolf?), she is best known for her work with
the universally-acclaimed Shared Experience
for whom her productions included the awardwinning Anna Karenina, Heartbreak House, True
West, The Birthday Party and Bronte.
John Mighton is an acclaimed Canadian
playwright (A Short History of Night, Body and
Soul, Scientific Americans and The Little Years).
He is also a professor of mathematics. He was a
script advisor on the film Good Will Hunting and
his play Possible Worlds was made into a film
directed by Robert Lepage.

Trouble In Mind
by Alice Childress
Directed by Laurence Boswell
Starring TANYA MOODIE ard JOSEPH MARCELL
Wiletta Mayer is a talented African-American
actress who has spent a lifetime building a
career in the theatre. Now she is on Broadway,
rehearsing Chaos in Belleville, an anti-lynching
play with a white director. As rehearsals progress,
Wiletta finds it increasingly difficult to relate
to the part she is playing. Will she be able to
overcome her misgivings and let the show go on?
Peppered with knowing humour and richlydrawn characters, this vivid depiction of
backstage life smartly satirises the whitedominated theatre scene of the fifties.
Tanya Moodie reunites with director Laurence
Boswell following the Ustinov Studio’s
phenomenal production of Intimate Apparel, for
which she was nominated in 2014 for olivier and
Evening Standard Awards. The same year she
was nominated for a WhatsonStage Best Actress
Award for Fences in which she starred with
Lenny Henry. She is currently playing Gertrude
in the RSC’s Hamlet.
Alice Childress was an extraordinary trailblazer in
the history of American Theatre, the first AfricanAmerican woman to win an oBiE award (for her
production of Trouble in Mind in1956), to direct
off Broadway and to have a play professionally
produced in New york.
Distinguished RSC actor
Joseph Marcell is best
known for his role in the
NBC sitcom The Fresh
Prince of Bel-Air. He starred
in Breakfast with Mugabe
in the Ustinov Studio in
2008 and recently played
the title role in King Lear
for Shakespeare’s Globe.

The Hound of the Baskervilles
Adapted by Milo Morris Directed by John East
When death stalks the Baskerville family, legend and superstition
collide with the most logical and rational brain of our time. Join
the world’s greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes, as he unravels his
most terrifying case yet, in this new adaptation of Arthur Conan
Doyle’s renowned mystery.
Within the eerie and desolate Devonshire moors something evil is
lurking around Baskerville Hall. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found
dead with the footprints of a giant hound nearby, speculation
points to the legendary family curse. Will this same fate meet those
that wish to make Baskerville Hall their home? Holmes and Watson
slowly unpick a tangle of mystery as the case takes them deep into
the heart of the Baskerville family, and into, perhaps, themselves?

Draw Back the Curtain
With Jane Tapley
Join us for this behind-the-scenes
tour of this beautiful Georgian
theatre. Jane Austen was a
frequent visitor to the theatre and
had strong opinions about the
plays she saw. Jane Tapley, the
Special Events Organiser at the
Theatre Royal, will recall some of
Austen’ s visits and talk about the
influence drama had on her novels.
Sheridan, the great 18th century
playwright said that Pride and
Prejudice was the cleverest novel
he had read partly because it was
written like a play with a great deal
of dialogue between the characters.

With Sir Ranulph Fiennes
Sir Ranulph Fiennes has climbed the Eiger and Mount
Everest. He has crossed both Poles on foot. He has
been a member of the SAS and fought a bloody
guerrilla war in Oman. And yet he confesses that his
fear of heights is so great that he’d rather send his wife
up a ladder to clean the gutters than do it himself.
In Fear, the world’s greatest explorer delves into his
own experiences to try and explain what fear is, how it
happens and how he has overcome it so successfully.
With an enthralling combination of story-telling,
research and personal accounts of his own struggles
to overcome fear, Sir Ranulph Fiennes sheds new light
on one of humanity’s strongest emotions.
With Philip Eade
Scrupulously researched, with access to the family
archive, this is a compelling new biography of one
of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, the
author of Vile Bodies, Decline and Fall, Scoop and the
masterpiece Brideshead Revisited.
Fifty years on from Waugh’s death, acclaimed
biographer Philip Eade takes a fresh look at this
famously complex character and tells the full story of
his dramatic, colourful and frequently bizarre life. He
looks at Waugh’s difficult relationship with his father;
his disastrous first marriage; his conversion to Roman
Catholicism; his unconventional attitude to his six
children; his sharp tongue; his egomania; and the love,
fear and loathing that he variously inspired.

The Romanovs: 1613-1918
With Simon Sebag Montefiore
The Romanovs were the most successful dynasty of
modern times, ruling a sixth of the world’s surface.
How did one family turn a war-ruined principality into
the world’s greatest empire? And how did they lose
it all?
This is the story of twenty tsars and tsarinas, some
touched by genius, some by madness. Montefiore’s
gripping chronicle reveals their secret world of
unlimited power and ruthless empire-building,
overshadowed by palace conspiracy, family rivalries,
sexual decadence and wild extravagance.
Written with dazzling literary flair and drawing on new
archival research, The Romanovs is already a top ten
Sunday Times non-fiction bestseller.
LUNCH: Pan-fried chicken with mushroom and tarragon
sauce, roasted root vegetables and crushed potatoes;
chocolate orange bread and butter pudding; coffee
V: Pea and mint risotto
Evelyn Waugh: A Life Revisited
LUNCH: Ham and leek pie, roasted carrots, new potatoes;
vanilla cheesecake with salted caramel sauce; coffee
V: Vegetable tagliatelle

The Making of the British Landscape
With Nicholas Crane
Prizewinning author Nicholas Crane, co-presenter of
Coast, discusses his new book about the history of
12,000 years of the British landscape, from the Ice Age
to the twenty-first century, which is set to be one of
the most extreme centuries of change.
He brilliantly describes the evolution of Britain’s
countryside and cities, beginning with the melting
glaciers, considering what the Romans did (and didn’t)
contribute to the British landscape; major landscape
‘events’ (Black Death, enclosures, urbanisation,
recreation, etc.); the role played by geology in shaping
our cities, industry and recreation; the effect of climate
(and the Gulf Stream), and of global economics.
LUNCH: Featherblade of beef, horseradish mash, chef’s veg;
fresh fruit salad; coffee V: Mushroom stroganoff with rice
