Management of Real-time Flow of Packaging Materials
CASE STUDY Management of Real-time Flow of Packaging Materials Abstract Our client, one of the largest CPG manufacturers in the world, was facing challenges in managing the supply of packaging material to production lines one of their largest manufacturing plants of a major business unit. We developed a custom solution for managing the real-time flow of packaging materials for multiple production lines; integration with warehouse system and purchase order system to induce improved efficiencies at manufacturing plants. The respective packag- ble to users from anywhere through internet. The data was stored to a back end relational database ing material was available in a remote warehouse and the relevant information was resid- (MS SQL). Our data integration model used SSIS packages to import PO related data from the exter- ing in another discrete database. Once production begins, Purchase Orders nal systems (PO database and MAPLE database) for further processing. are sequenced in the order of priority of shipments. Then the packaging material was called for to be supplied on-time to the production plant. The Client’s team was carrying out the entire process manually. As a result they had three major pitfalls: 1) Timely availability of packing materials for production lines 2) Effective management of materials inventory 3) Optimal utilization of each production line capacity. There was minimal visibility with respect to inventory, order status, and shipments at any point in time during the process. PO Database MAPLE Excel File Feed Feed Shared Drive (to store feeds from the three sources) Fetch Data Vertex Solution SSIS Package Vertex gathered detailed functional requirements, and developed ASP.NET web-based application to automate the entire process for sequencing the Process Orders. Vertex built SSIS package to import PO related data from the external systems (PO database and MAPLE database) and developed Window Service for raising automatic requests for packaging material from Warehouse. It hosted socket server to integrate with RTCIS system to update quantity needed to process orders and to tag the real start time and availability of materials.
