Why we love it: After 16 years, it is
physically impossible not to.
We’ll forgive you for . . . An unusually high percentage of recent unevenness, episodes that start one
place and spiral off into utter bizarreness and gags that are esoteric even
by these elevated standards. This is
Season 17. There’s only a finite number of ways you can make Homer
(Castellaneta) re-prove his dedication
to Bart (Cartwright). It’s cool.
We’re not worthy: Listing all the
things we are not worthy of here
would result in a crippling ink shortage.
Where we left off: Let’s see: Hom-

We’ll forgive you for . . . The
unexplained departure of secondary characters and the drawn-out
romantic tension between Josh
(Whitford) and Donna (Moloney).
But the drop-off in writing during
Seasons 4 and 5 was most painful.
The show started to trip after 9/
11, and fell on its face when Sorkin

Grey’s Anatomy
10 p.m. Sundays on ABC. Premieres: Sunday, Sept. 25.
Starring: Ellen Pompeo, Patrick
Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Katherine
Heigl, James Pickens Jr., Isaiah
Washington, T.R. Knight, Chandra
Wilson, Justin Chambers
Why we love it: Remember the
early days when NBC’s ER was
must-see TV and George Clooney
was still heating up our medical
fantasies? Well, there’s a new hot
doc on the block — and who would
have thought that this “Dr. McDreamy” (so dubbed by series star
Pompeo in TV Guide) would be
Dempsey, star of such ’80s fare as
Can’t Buy Me Love and Loverboy.
He was also the one not chosen by
Reese Witherspoon in 2002's
Sweet Home Alabama. We bet
even Reese is rethinking her decision now.
We’ll forgive you for . . . Hooking us in the spring with only nine,
yes, nine episodes (although Season 2 will have 26!); hitting us with
a whopper of a season finale —
the sudden appearance of Dr. McDreamy’s wife and her wonderful
line to his stunned girlfriend (”You
must be the woman [sleeping
with] my husband”); and then leaving us hanging for a whole summer.
We’re not worthy: This show
about the new surgical residents
learning to swim in the sharkinfested waters, so to
speak, of Seattle
Grace Hospital has
great story lines:
Meredith Grey having to deal with
her mother’s worsening dementia;
Izzie Stevens (Heigl), who modeled
her way through
medical school, a past
she’s not ashamed of
but also one she can’t
seem to escape; and the
relationship between ohso-competitive Cristina
Yang (the Emmynominated Oh) and one of
her superiors, Dr. Preston
Burke (Washington). That’s not
Where we left off: “OK. Let’s go
win this thing,” Republican presidential candidate Sen. Arnold Vinick (Alda) said after watching
Texas congressman Matt Santos
(Smits) accept the Democratic
nomination at a contentious convention. Santos, under pressure
from the party to bow out, delivered the speech of his political life,
spin-offs of the venerable Law &
Order, the show retains the template of all three Dick Wolf series
while also revealing the psychological motives of criminals.
D’Onofrio’s Detective Goren is the
wunderkind we love to hate for always, always being right. He’s a
quirky, hyper-intelligent investigator with uncanny instincts
for emotional flaws
and personality disorders. The show
has whodunit appeal, plus a lot
more. Sometimes the bad
guys win, and
viewers see
the gray areas
of moral, legal
and ethical issues that provide post-show
fodder for debate.
We’ll forgive
you for . . .
D’Onofrio’s seemingly other-worldly
Heard it through the
grapevine: Don’t expect a November election. The Santos vs. Vinick
showdown has dramatically re-
ability to do things such as smell
the hair of a corpse and determine
where the “vic” ate her last meal.
His unbelievable breadth of knowledge includes dead languages, artistic masters, physics, forgery and
fashion. Even as we suspend disbelief week after week, viewers constantly wonder why the guy isn’t
directing research in a federal
think tank or performing brain surgery on his days off.
We’re not worthy: Plots that
involve equal parts international
intrigue and armchair psychology.
There’s just nowhere else to watch
this stuff. OK, maybe CSI, but Intent is a lot less graphic and
bloody.
Heard it through the
grapevine: Expect some more fireworks between Meredith and Dr.
Shepherd’s wife, who’s also a doctor and will be sticking around Seattle Grace. But since that stay is
slated for only six episodes, we’re
putting our long-term bets on
Meredith in this love triangle.
Meredith’s mother, the famed Dr.
Ellis Grey, will become a patient at
the hospital but still think she’s a
prominent surgeon there. And then
there’s Dr. Webber. Reports are
that he has some secrets of his
own regarding Meredith’s mom.

vived West Wing and producers
are going to milk it for all it’s
worth. Look for the election to
come in March. Also, Janeane Garofalo will join the Santos campaign as a communications consultant for a six-episode arc. The
lame-duck First Lady may be
mostly absent, as Channing has
moved to a new CBS comedy (Out
of Practice).

OK, it’s not always realistic, but it
is usually compelling.
Where we left off: What? Besides the season-ending bombshell
arrival of Dr. Derek Shepherd’s
wife? Well, there’s the dilemma of
Cristina’s pregnancy. Will she tell
Dr. Burke? Will she go through
with her plan to terminate it? The
show’s creators assured Entertainment Weekly they’ll settle this issue quickly. George, who learned in
the finale that he contracted syphilis from his girlfriend, still has a
crush on Meredith, and Chief of
Surgery Dr. Richard Webber is recovering from a secret operation
to remove a tumor from his optic
nerve.

Where we left off: D’Onofrio’s
real-life bouts with fainting on the
set in November 2004 opened the
squad room door for Noth (The
Perfect Man, Sex and the City) to
return to the Law & Order fold.
Noth played Detective Mike Logan
on the original show from 199095, and after decking a city councilman in public, he was exiled to

Why we love it: Politics is
messy. The West Wing is not. Martin Sheen is presidential. Real-life
officeholders often are not. Even
though politics today is as scripted
and choreographed as this Aaron
Sorkin-created show, we just can’t
help but yearn for a White House
as real as the one created on a
Warner Bros. soundstage in Southern California.
We’re not worthy: The dialogue’s so rich (and often fastpaced) that you occasionally have
to use both TiVo and closed captioning to catch it all. The West
Wing, with all of its once-criticized
walking and talking and talking
and walking scenes, offers a more
realistic depiction of the presidency and the staff of the executive branch than we’ve seen on TV
and the big screen.
wowing the crowd and
inspiring Bartlet to
lock up Santos’ nomination behind the
scenes. We expected that. What
we didn’t see
coming was the
naming of former
chief of staff Leo
McGarry (Spencer)
as the other half of
the ticket.
The season also ended
with the FBI investigating a
White House leak that revealed the
existence of a second, military-use
space shuttle. With that information public, President Bartlett debated whether to use that shuttle
to rescue the crew aboard a disabled NASA shuttle. We were left
with the impression that White
House communications director
Toby Ziegler (Schiff) may be the
source of the information (his
brother is a NASA astronaut).

gave us hope that a program can

More,
Heard it through the grapevine:
Guest stars this season will include
WIlliam H. Macy, Randy Johnson and
Joe Frazier, and Ricky Gervais of the
BBC version of The Office will write
and star in an episode. Later this fall,
Patty (Kavner) and Selma (Kavner)
will kidnap MacGyver, the family visits an Italian villa whose mayor turns
out to be Sideshow Bob (Kelsey
Grammer), and the annual Halloween
episode will feature Dennis Rodman
and Terry Bradshaw. And you know
how every few years the rumors of a
Simpsons movie start up again? Rumors of a Simpsons movie have
started up again; Cartwright said this
summer that pre-production had begun.
