PBS gives 4-hour look at `The Supreme Court`
DAILY JOURNAL, JOHNSON COUNTY, IND.
PBS gives 4-hour look
at ‘The Supreme Court’
L
isten to cable news, talk
radio and popular televangelists, and you frequently
hear criticism of the courts. This
is hardly new. As “The Supreme
Court” (9 p.m., WFYI, WTIU, concludes next Wednesday) makes
clear, battles over the power and
influence of Supreme Court decisions have been going on since the
days of the founding fathers.
“Supreme” offers a thoughtful
survey history of more than two
centuries of constitutional law and
history, from the precedent-setting conflicts between John
Marshall and presidents Thomas
Jefferson and Andrew Jackson to
the Dred Scott debacle; the
court’s use of the 14th Amendment to protect property rights
during the Gilded Age to the Civil
Rights era of the mid-20th century
and the Rehnquist court of the
past three decades.
“Supreme” artfully blends talking-head commentary with period
art, historic re-creations and photomontages to present an attractive visual accompaniment to
thought-provoking history and
commentary. In addition to legal
experts, constitutional scholars
and biographers of justices,
“Supreme” features observations
by retired Justice Sandra Day
O’Connor and current Chief
Justice John G. Roberts.
Roberts touches on a theme
that runs throughout the program’s four-hour run: the idea
that the court both reflects and at
times runs counter to the popular
will of the moment.
• Bravo offers “Top Design” (11
p.m., Bravo), a blatant new clone
of “Project Runway.” This misfire
does not approach the entertainment level of “Runway,” but at
least it does little to blemish our
memory of the original product.
Set in the world of interior
design, “Top” features famous
designer Todd Oldham as host. As
you can expect, the show invites 12
designers from all over the country to share a posh Los Angeles
barracks and compete with each
other to please picky clients and
face elimination rounds.
The creative gulf between “Top”
and “Runway” emerges almost
immediately. On “Runway,”
designers are given a modest
amount of money to buy fabric so
they can create original outfits. In
their very first assignment, the
“Top” designers are given $50,000
and sent to a fancy design center
to buy furniture and accessories
for a relaxation center for a mystery client.
There is a vast difference
between creating stuff and buying
stuff. “Runway” is not without its
product placements, but “Top”
seems like one long product placement, featuring more than its
share of annoying personalities.
“Top” proves that big egos plus
big budgets equals a big bore.

Arbitration in order over
plans for tell-all book
Jennifer Lopez’s first husband,
Ojani Noa, was ordered Monday to
enter arbitration
with the pop star
over his plans for
a tell-all book
about their brief
marriage.
Lopez filed a
Superior Court
breach of contract suit nine
months ago and LOPEZ
got a restraining
order barring Noa from publishing intimate details of their sex
life. She asked for arbitration.
Noa’s ghostwritten book alleges Lopez had multiple affairs,
including one with her third and
current husband, singer Marc
Anthony, court documents show.
Superior Court Judge Victor H.
Person agreed with Lopez’s lawyer,
Paul N. Sorrell, that Noa was bound
to arbitration under terms of a 2005
settlement of another lawsuit.

Brandy could be charged
in fatal L.A. car crash
The California Highway Patrol
recommended that actress-singer
Brandy be charged with misde-
meanor vehicular manslaughter in
a freeway crash that killed a
woman motorist
last month, a
city attorney’s
spokesman said.
The patrol
referred the
matter to the
city attorney’s
office for review, said
spokesman Nick BRANDY
Velasquez.
“The office is currently reviewing the case and determining
whether the evidence warrants
the filing of a misdemeanor
charge of vehicular manslaughter,” Velasquez said.
Brandy’s spokeswoman said
the singer wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the
time of the crash.

At a recent reunion of the cast
of the 1960s TV comedy “McHale’s
Navy,” the actors were appalled at
the arrival of their former
commandant.
A driver helped Ernest
Borgnine from the car. The once-exuberant Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale
was stooped over and walked haltingly, muttering gibberish.
His former ensign, comedian
Tim Conway, rushed forward and
exclaimed, “Ernie, what has happened to you?”
Suddenly Borgnine straightened
up, threw out his massive chest
and bellowed, “What’s going on
here?” followed by his signature
high-decibel laugh.
Prankster Borgnine shows little
evidence of aging despite celebrating his 90th birthday on Jan. 24. His
round, pudgy face is little changed.
His only concession to age was
abandoning the bus he used to
drive around the country.
“I gave up the bus when I was
88,” he said. “I figured if I had an
accident, I could be sued for plenty. Now I take cruises. I just
returned from one that started in
Auckland, New Zealand, and visited a lot of islands.”
AP PHOTO
Actor Ernest Borgnine recently turned 90. He starred in “McHale’s Navy.”
Borgnine was born in Hamden,
Conn., to Italian parents. They
divorced when he was 2, and his
mother took him to live in Italy. He
returned to the United States five
years later and joined the Navy in
1935. He was discharged in 1941,
then re-enlisted when World War II
started.
“I never considered being an
actor until I was 28,” he said. “When
I was home from the Navy after the
war, my mother said, ‘Have you
ever thought of becoming an actor?’
I decided to give it a try.”
He joined a drama company in
Hartford, Conn., then spent five
years at the Barter Theater in
Abingdon, Va.
Hollywood discovered Borgnine
as a heavy. He was the soldier who
beat Frank Sinatra to a pulp in
“From Here to Eternity” and the
outlaw who menaced one-armed
Spencer Tracy in “Bad Day at Black
Rock.” Then along came “Marty.”
Paddy Chayefsky, author of the
original TV drama, and director
Delbert Mann scouted actors,
including Borgnine.

“Marty” was an Oscar phenomenon. The low-budget, blackand-white drama competed
against such giants as “Picnic”
and “Mister Roberts.” A publicity
campaign which cost more than
the movie’s budget blanketed the
industry.
Result: Oscars for best picture
and for Borgnine, Mann and
Chayefsky.
Asked about today’s movies,
Borgnine responded: “I don’t like
’em. Oh, there are some good
ones that come along. I liked the
two pictures that Clint Eastwood
made. ‘The Queen’ is very good. I
liked ‘Bobby.’ But the majority...”
