People TUESDAY JANUARY 19 2016 MIAMIHERALD.COM Spike, Jada: Boycott Oscars because it lacks ‘flava’ Skrillex: a happy birthday on the Beach Superstar DJ Skrillex celebrated his 28th birthday Thursday at Bodega Taqueria y Tequila. The DJ, clad in all black, was joined by DJ/producer Diplo — in all white — and came with three “scantily Skrillex clad ladies,” says our snitch. The staff presented Skrillex with birthday doughnuts, and the group sang happy birthday. The DJs spent the rest of the night sipping signature Bodega cocktails and dancing until the wee hours. The celebration continued with Diplo and dinner Friday at Prime 112. Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary was seen celebrating a pal’s birthday Thursday at Bagatelle Miami Beach. Looking “Miami festive” in a black button-down shirt, white jeans and red moccasins, the group of seven BY LESLEY ABRAVANEL started with 500 [email protected] grams of Osetra Caviar ($6,000!) and enjoyed some surf and turf and preordered chocolate cake. The group danced and left around 1 a.m. Lil Jon and Steve Aoki were seen snapping pix with Lil Jon David Grutman Friday at his restaurant, Komodo. On Saturday, DJ/actress Ruby Rose was seen supping with Grutman and his fiancée Isabela Rangel. Argentine pianist Raul di Blasio was recently seen supping at Caffe Abbracci. Rose Alexander Delgado, lead singer of Gente de Zona, was spotted Friday dancing on his VIP table at Mokai after sharing a bottle of tequila with owner Roman Jones. San Diego Padres star Jon Jay was seen Friday checking Delgado out Coconut Grove restaurant Ariete, the new project by Jay’s high school friends SideBar owner Jason Odio and Cyprus Room alum Chef Michael Beltran. Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith each said Monday that they will not attend this year’s ceremony. In a lengthy Instagram post, Lee said he “cannot support” the “lily white” Oscars. Noting that he was writing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Lee said he was fed up: “Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all,” he wrote. In a video message on Facebook, Pinkett Smith also said she wouldn’t attend or watch the Oscars in February. Pinkett Smith, whose husband Will Smith wasn’t nominated for his performance in the NFL head trauma drama Concussion, said “begging for acknowledgment, or even asking, diminishes dignity.” Lee CRITICS’ CHOICE AWARDS The investigative journalism drama Spotlight won the top prize at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, while awards favorites Brie Larson and Leonardo DiCaprio won the top acting prizes for Room and The Revenant. Both actors won Golden Globe Larson Awards and are considered frontrunners for the Academy Awards, too. Mad Max: Fury Road was the most nominated film of the evening with 13 DiCaprio nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics’ Association. While it lost out for the top prize, it did win a number of awards, including Best Director for Jada Pinkett Smith, left, and George Miller, best action movie, Will Smith and best action movie actor and actress for Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. The financial crisis dramedy The Big Short, meanwhile, won for best comedy and best comedic actor for star Christian Bale, who kissed his wife and director Adam McKay on his way up to the stage to accept his award. Both were up for best picture Oscar heavyweights like Spotlight, The Revenant and The Martian, as well as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was added after initial nominees were announced and went home empty handed on Sunday. Spotlight also won Best Acting Ensemble, winning out over films like Straight Outta Compton and The Hateful Eight. It was the only award that N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton was up for at the show, but the film was on everyone’s minds after it received only one Academy Award nomination for screenwriting just days earlier. “They got snubbed, but there are lots of other great films that got snubbed as well,” said Neil Brown Jr., who played DJ Yella in the film. “Just everybody talking about it is enough of an Oscar for us,” he added. The victim was about to offer related testimony, which immediately establishes a motive for the killing. A power-canceling storm gives McGee (Sean Murray) hope of finding shelter with a colleague. Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette and David McCallum also star. Page: People_1 Chris Evans is featured in ‘Marvel's Captain America: 75 Heroic Years’ on ABC. Pub. date: Tuesday, January 19 8 PM _ New Girl Jess (Zooey Deschanel) couldn’t be happier about being summoned for jury duty — until it conflicts with her shot at a potential promotion at work — in a new episode appropriately titled “Jury Duty.” Nick (Jake Johnson) decides he’s had it with Cece’s (Hannah Simone) lack of tidiness in the loft, but curing it is another matter. John Cho (“Selfie”) and Curtis Armstrong (“Supernatural”) guest star. Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris also star. 8 PM * Marvel’s Captain America: 75 Heroic Years One of the Last user: [email protected] Edition: 1st most iconic characters in comics has been around a long time, and this new special salutes that run by showing how Steve Rogers and his shield-toting alter ego have evolved over the years. Chris Evans, who plays the part in the current Marvel movies, is among the interviewees here. 8 PM (ESQTV) Team Ninja Warrior Fans of “American Ninja Warrior” are almost sure to enjoy this spinoff, in which the brutally demanding obstacle course — which requires challengers to defy gravity, physics and their own deep-seated phobias — has Section, zone: People, State been taken to a whole new level to accommodate two players. 8 PM (TRAV) Planet Primetime Self-confessed pop culture and entertainment addict Karla Cavalli hosts this new series that follows her as she travels the globe to explore some of the world’s most off-the-wall TV shows and what they say about their home culture. The series premiere takes her to Japan, where the country’s rigidly structured society seems wildly at odds with its mania for completely over-the-top physical comedy. Another new episode immediately follows. Last change at: 18:57:39 January 18 404 Washington Ave., Suite 730 - Miami Beach, FL 33139- o.305.438.9200 - [email protected]
