Little shop of rat horrors?
Plant unlikely to solve
NYC’s rodent woes
CRITTER RIDDERS
NYC spots where the ‘rat-eating
plant’ could come in handy:
BY JASON FINK
[email protected]
New York’s tenacious rats can
be poisoned, trapped and even shot
with BB guns, and still they seem
to be everywhere.
Perhaps the city could try
plants.
A new discovery atop a remote
mountain in the Philippines may be
just what’s needed — a carnivorous
plant that can devour rodents.
“The plant is among the largest
of all carnivorous plant species
and produces spectacular traps as
large as other species which catch
not only insects, but also rodents
as large as rats,” Stewart McPherson, who co-discovered the plant,
named Nepenthes attenboroughii,
told the BBC.
Ceyhun Sahinkaya, 27, of Brooklyn, was shocked when told about
the plant, but allowed that maybe
it could do battle with the city’s rat
population, estimated to be about
8 million. “That’s weird,” she said.
“Maybe it could work.”
But New Yorkers shouldn’t get
too excited, as importing the rare
find would be unlikely to do much
damage to the pesky rodents.
“I would be highly, highly suspect of that working,” said Jeff
Eisenberg, head of Pest Away
Exterminating in Manhattan. “A
rat’s greatest asset is they are built
for survival. They would learn instinctively to avoid that plant.”
First discovered in 2007 by a
team of botanists in the Philip
1. Subways: Besides being a haven for
rodents, subway stations are drab.
Imagine sitting on a bench with your
morning coffee in a station spruced
up by these bizarre plants, placed in
pots and kept alive by grow-lights.
Then enjoy the carnage as a plant
devours a rat before your eyes.
2. Restaurants: Some are immaculate,
but others ... . Perhaps the health
department’s next venture is mandating each city eatery invest in these
rodent-hunters for their kitchen.
Putting them in the dining area?
Probably not the best idea.
3. Apartment buildings: Landlords
can decorate lobbies, elevators and
laundry rooms and keep the buildings
vermin free. Posh buildings may even
have adventurous doormen wear the
plants on their uniforms.

a scientific journal, N. attenboroughii is a large, previously unknown “pitcher plant.”
Such plants lure their prey into
cup-shaped pitchers with sweetscented nectar. Normally, they eat
insects, which crawl or fly into the
pitchers and are slowly devoured.
But N. attenboroughii, which
can grow to four feet across, can
drown small animals such as rats
and digest them, said Susan Pell,
a botanist at the Brooklyn Botanic
Garden, which currently has an
exhibit of pitcher plants.
“It’s totally possible to have a

DA: Killer tried to hire hit man
Jailed LI man
allegedly wanted
witness dead
BY ANN GIVENS
Special to amNewYork
A year after authorities
say Harpal Hira stabbed
his mother-in-law to death
and seriously hurt his estranged wife, he arranged
from prison to have his sister-in-law who witnessed
the attack killed, prosecutors said yesterday.
“He said he wanted the
woman to disappear,” said
prosecutor Anne Donnelly.
“And not to leave any mess
behind.”
Hira, who is awaiting
trial on second-degree
murder charges, was arraigned yesterday morning
on new charges of seconddegree conspiracy and two
counts of second-degree
criminal solicitation.
Hira was caught after he
asked a fellow inmate at
the Nassau County Jail if he
knew anyone who would
kill someone for money,
Donnelly said.
The other inmate then
told investigators, who
sent an undercover police
officer to visit Hira in jail,
posing as a prospective

hit man. The undercover
officer tape-recorded his
conversations with Hira,
Donnelly said.
Hira pleaded not guilty
to the charges. His lawyer,
Michael Dergarabedian,
asked Judge Meryl Berkowitz for time to review those
tapes before responding to
the charges.
“This man is a coldblooded murderer who
right from his prison cell
attempted to hire a hit
man to kill a witness in his
case. He will stop at nothing,” said District Attorney
Kathleen Rice.
Hira, 34, of Hicksville,
Long Island, was arrested
last year for the Aug.
2, 2008, murder of his
56-year-old mother-inlaw, Meena Kohli, and the
attempted murder of his
wife, Ritika Hira, 24, at the
couple’s Hicksville home.
Kohli was stabbed to
death, and Ritika Hira suffered stab wounds on her
arms and hands, prosecutors said.
Hira’s sister-in-law, who
witnessed portions of the
attack and then ran to a
neighbor’s house to call
police, was not named by
prosecutors yesterday.
T he Hiras’ newbor n
twin boys also were home
at the time, but were unharmed, prosecutors said.
Hira’s wife is in a secure,
out-of-state location with
the twins.

Second Ave. Subway
killing mom-and-pops
The Second Avenue Subway project has neighboring mom-and-pop stores on
the brink of extinction, according to a report released
yesterday by the city public
advocate’s office.
More than half of the
59 businesses surveyed in
the last month said they
anticipate closing before
the subway opens. Nearly
half reported laying off
employees, and 90 percent
reported tanking business.
“Construction on this
scale is more than disruptive; it is devastating,” said
P ublic Advocate Betsy
Gotbaum.
Resea rcher s spoke
to more than half of all
independent businesses
in the construction zones
between 69th and 74th
streets and between 91st
and 97th streets.
Gotbaum wants the city
to provide loans and grants
to the businesses, along

Taconic crash

Prosecutors closed the
book yesterday on any
possible criminal charges
stemming from the wrongway crash that killed eight
people on the Taconic State
Parkway last month.
“Diane Schuler died in
the crash, and the charges
died with her,” Westchester
District Attorney Janet DiFiore told reporters.
Schuler, 36, drove the
wrong way for nearly two
miles before her minivan
slammed into an SUV, killing
her, her 2-year-old daughter,
three young nieces and
three men in the SUV. Her
5-year-old son survived.
An autopsy found that
Schuler had a 0.19 bloodalcohol level and had

Man unfit for trial in
airport bomb scare

The man accused of
causing a security scare
that shut down LaGuardia
Airport on Aug. 1 is unfit for

ruled yesterday.

To that end, Obama has
demanded that the Israeli

Two Iranian opposition activists
have been hospitalized, one after
being beaten by his jailers for
refusing to attend trial, the other
from a hunger strike. Iran’s top
opposition leaders, meanwhile,
said they were joining a reformist
movement to present a united

Authorities are investigating a
claim that a woman is pregnant
with 12 babies. A Health Ministry
official in Tunisia said yesterday
the claim, reported by British and
French media, seemed doubtful
and that the woman — who has
not been identified — has refused
to see a doctor for an ultrasound.
The arrests of two top members
are another blow to the Pakistani
Taliban as it reels from the apparent killing of its chief by a missile
strike. One of those arrested,
Pakistani Taliban spokesman
Maulvi Umar, said that the movement’s chief, Baitullah Mehsud,
had been killed on Aug. 5. (AP)

City’s chain reaction to the recession
Report shows
some stores grow
in down times
BY GARETT SLOANE
[email protected]
There are more Starbucks
in the city than there were a
year ago — despite a handful
of highly publicized closings last year — while other
chain retailers, Circuit City
among them, have been
wiped off the map.
Center for an Urban
Future released its second
annual report yesterday on
the state of chain stores in
the city. Despite the recession — or perhaps because
of it — a number of national
retailers expanded, the
report found.
More than 100 of the 167 chains surveyed last year expanded or stayed level.
“There’s been such a discussion of whether there
are too many chain stores
or too many mom-and-pops
being forced out, and I think
it’s a mixed picture,” said
Jonathan Bowles, executive
director of the think-tank.
This year the report breaks
down the number of chains
by ZIP code.
“There are more neighbor-

hoods under-retailed in the
city than are saturated with
retail chains,” Bowles said.
A surprise for Bowles
was that of 167 retailers
surveyed last year 53 ex-
panded, 52 stayed level and
62 have fewer stores. The
findings show that some
big brands got bullish during the downturn.
Starbucks lopped off
about a dozen stores in
the city last year, but still
managed to grow from 235
locations to 258.
Lower rents are enticing
the healthier companies to
expand, said Judah Sutton,
president of JUD Leasing
Corp.
He just negotiated a
lease for Lot Less Closeouts,
which took over the former
Strand Bookstore location
at 95 Fulton St.
“A lot of national retailers
already in New York that
are doing well or holding
their own are aggressively
looking to expand,” Sutton
said.

Understanding the art of “Getting paid”
On the surface, Washington is a curious setting
for a story that goes like
this: a protagonist defined
by his lack of ambition,
forced to go on something
like a journey through his
regrets.
This is Washington!
Ambitions overfloweth here,
and regrets aren’t something folks have the time or
gumption to dwell on.
No matter. Ward Just
makes the juxtaposition
work well in “Exiles in the
Garden,” his 16th novel.
The main character, Alec
Malone, is something of
Just’s inverse. A former
journalist, Just earned
renown, in part, for his
coverage of the Vietnam
War, a dangerous but also
Cadillac assignment of his
era.
Alec is an up-and-coming photographer whose
life becomes defined by
his decision to turn down
assignment to Southeast
Asia. He sees his career,
and eventually his marriage, wither.
Just is a talented writer
whose considerable ability to turn a phrase is
matched by his power of
(AP)
observation.

Gov’t health care
good for economy
Is anyone talking about
how America lost millions of jobs to China and
other nations that do

wouldn’t you move factories and save billions

German soldiers in the
film, which opens Friday —
For all you amateur copy editors out there,
yes, the title of Quentin Tarantino’s new film,
“Inglourious Basterds,” does indeed use some
nontraditional spellings. But the talkative director won’t spill the beans on why. “Here’s
the thing, I’m never going to explain
that. You do an artistic flourish like
that, and to explain it would just take
the piss out of it and invalidate the
whole stroke in the first place,”
Tarantino said at a press conference
at the Cannes Film Festival, The
Toronto Star reported.

“We almost got incinerated,” Roth, the director

There’s no better time than the present to try
to create and maintain a fitness and lifestyle
routine that strengthens the body, calms the
mind and uplifts the spirit all at once.
“Since so many of our other investments
have turned to dust, perhaps now is the time
to invest in our own self-development,” said
author and wellness expert Asha Praver.
Here, Praver has provided tips for
staying motivated in your fitness goals
while reducing stress, achieving balance
and improving your overall well-being.
Choose your yoga
To get the maximum benefit from yoga, look for
a style that calls itself “spiritual” or “meditative.” This is especially good if you’re a beginner or physically out of shape, because it’s easy
to feel the benefits of these tpes of yoga even if
you can only bend in general directions.
Try Ananda yoga — it’s suitable for all ages
and physical conditions, with an emphasis on
attunement and building physical strength.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
JIUJITSU MUAY THAI
Natural ways
to a flatter
stomach
There’s nothing more annoying than when
all those crunches you do don’t even create a
hint of a six-pack. The fact is there’s no such
thing as spot reduction from a specific body
part. While crunches tone tummy muscles,
they won’t lead to a flat belly, which is all
about diet and digestion. Here are some steps
to take:
■ Clear out your colon. This is a simple
way to make your tummy look trim. Bloating
caused by undigested foods or
a poor ratio of “good” to “bad”
bacteria in the large intestine
will increase the size of the
belly.
Most of us carry an extra
10 pounds of waste products in
the colon and a daily fiber intake
of 25 to 35 grams, along with 2 liters
of water, is recommended to keep
the colon moving. Introduce fiber
gradually to avoid getting constipated.
■ Use probiotics. If your
bloat is due to an excess of
unhealthy intestinal microbes,
daily supplementation with probiotics, combined with foods such
as natural yogurt, kefir, kimchi and
sauerkraut, may help.
■ Keep meals simple. Combining protein
with vegetables (a salmon salad, for example)
or starch with vegetables (brown rice and broccoli) is likely to move through your digestive
system faster than a combo of the two (think
meat lasagna). If you like starchy foods, eat
them early in the day. Toward the end of the
day, combine protein with veggies.

Treat your feet at home
Though summer’s nearly
over, there’s no reason to
stop paying attention to
your feet. In fact, with a
little TLC, they can look
great and healthy all year
long.
Here are tips from podiatrists on keeping your feet
looking their best.
Don’t ignore them
Regularly check for swelling, discoloration or redness, all signs of infections
that are easier to treat if
caught early. See a doctor
if needed.
Wash and dry
Cleaning daily with soap
and water, and toweling off
feet completely, will help
prevent infections.
Soak them
Fill a bowl with warm water
— not hot water, which dries
skin — and soak your feet
for 10 to 20 minutes. You
can add oils or treatments,
but warm water alone will
soften and smooth skin.
Confused about the differences between food that’s
labeled organic and food that’s labeled natural?
Read on for some healthy enlightenment.
Always moisturize
Following a soak, shower
or bath, massage lotion
onto your feet and toes. If
your skin is very dry, try
putting on thick socks
afterward to help skin
absorb the lotion.
Organic
The word organic refers to farming methods used to grow and
process our food and fiber supply without the use of pesticides,
herbicides, antibiotics, additives, hormones or irradiation.
Organic food is minimally processed so fewer nutrients are lost,
so food maintains its wholesome value. Also, organic food isn’t
genetically altered.
In 2002, the USDA established national criteria for food labeled
organic called the National Organics Program (NOP).
These criteria ensure that the organic food you’re buying upholds
the highest standards for production and handling.
Work on
problem areas
Gently and gradually file
down rough patches, dead
skin and corns with a pumice stone or emery board.
Ideally do this after a soak,
when skin is softer.
Natural
Trim correctly
Using a stainless-steel
cutter, clip nails straight
across, keeping the end
of each nail shorter than
the tip of your toe. Gently
round off the corners with
an emery board. This will
help guard against ingrown
toenails.
Wear clean socks
Change socks or hosiery
every day, especially after
a workout.
Natural versus organic:
A basic breakdown
Treating feet to a warm water soak is an effective and
inexpensive way to keep them healthy all year.
Wear shoes that fit
If they’re too tight, extra
sweat can cause skin and
nail problems. Since people
tend to have one foot that’s
slightly larger than the
other, shop for shoes that
fit the bigger one.
Invest in a pair of
shower shoes
T r y to avoid walk ing
around barefoot in public
places such as gyms, saunas,
pools and locker rooms, as
these are germ havens.
Natural refers to the ingredients used in the products. Presently,
there’s no legal definition for natural products in the U.S. — with
the exception of fresh produce, dairy and meat.
Because you can’t guarantee that the products you’re shopping
for are natural, read labels to ensure they are made from 100 percent natural ingredients and aren’t chemically processed. They
should be preservative,
additive and trans-fat
free and they shouldn’t
contain animal
byproducts, artificial
colors or flavors,
hydrogenated oils or
fillers.

Author advocates taking
health cues from evolution
When you think of evolution, you probably imagine cavemen or early ancestors
who held answers to our genetic makeup.
However, when it comes to your health, you
might think that medicine has evolved to a
point where we no longer need to listen to
old cues. Modern medicine will fix us.
Dr. William Meller, a California internist,
argues to the contrary.
He writes in his book “Evolution Rx: A Practical Guide
to Harnessing Our Innate
Capacity for Health and Healing” that health concerns are
best remedied by listening
to our bodies more and paying attention to clues that
explain what we should do
and how we should take
care of ourselves.

THEPROCEDURE
In one chapter, you
write about people
needing sunlight,
possibly more than
we are getting.
What about skin
cancer?
The fear of skin
cancer is vastly overblown. Basal cells and squamous
cells are directly related to your genetic
makeup. Very easy to recognize. They almost never metastasize.
Melanoma — the one that scares us — is
directly related to genetics and not how
much sun exposure we get. It is extremely
hard to treat. But because of this fear, we
absolutely have an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency and osteoporosis. And maybe even
depression and other cancers.
You advocate low carb instead of low fat.
Why? What does this have to do with
evolution?
We found places like caves that people
lived in for 40,000 years. We’d go in and
sift through and get a good sense of what
they ate. Looking at that evidence and our
own physiological makeup, we learned
that carbs were extremely rare in human
diets. If you look back, they didn’t
have grains. At most,
they ate grains
two out of the
52 weeks of
the year. It was
mostly hunting
and gathering.
In another chapter,
you write about
shoes. Are all shoes
bad for our feet?
Shoes have been used
to bind people’s feet up
for years. Without high
heels, there would be no
bunions. Feet are very,
very conformable at a
very young age. Whatever
you wear on your feet, your
foot becomes comfortable
and used to it.
People who don’t wear shoes — their feet
look different than all people who wear
shoes.
There are many people walking around
in foot pain. The answer seems to be in
looser-fitting, softer shoes that are not going to cause your foot to change to be like
the shoe.

Additional charges may occur for more complex related cases
Sea veggies are an important source of the trace
mineral iodine, which is
needed by the thyroid.
Since the thyroid controls
metabolism, the normalizing effect accelerates
calorie burning.
Natural seaweeds can be
used by everyone, even during pregnancy. They can be
eaten raw and are often
dried or ground into flakes
or powder.
Sneak them into food or
toss some into water when
cooking. Sprinkle f lakes
or powder over veggies for
flavor and nutrients.
Swap in sea salt
Sea salt provides twice
the f lavor, half the
sodium and plenty of
other minerals that
table salt doesn’t
have. Table salt is
mined from the
earth and doesn’t
contain any
nutrients.
Sea salt is extracted from the ocean, is
rich in trace minerals
and has an alkalizing
effect on blood.
The best-quality
sea salt stays moist to

gray, pink or black in

College meals grow up
You don’t have to
give up your coffee
habit just because
times are tough.
Store manager
Damien Zamudio
gave us his tips for
saving at Starbucks.
BY EMILY NGO
[email protected]
They were your go-to meals
in college. You know, those dinners you threw together when
you were too busy, too lazy or
— gulp — too hungover to make
an effort.
It’s not a bad thing to keep
comfort food in your life. Fresh
ingredients and a little planning can upgrade college plates
to satisfy post-college palates.
Plus, all of the dishes below
can be made without an oven,
so they’re great for these hot
summer days.
Buy a tumbler
Tumblers are for sale
at Starbucks (most
are less than $10),
but bring any tumbler
and you’ll receive 10
cents off your drink.
Tea lover?
Bring your
own bags
Starbucks doesn’t
charge for hot water,
so if you bring your
own tea bag, it’s free.
You can also buy a
single tea bag for
45 cents. Combine
with the tip above
and you’ve got a
35-cent beverage.
Mini pizzas
Top whole-grain bagel or English muffin halves with tomato
sauce, basil leaves, fresh sliced
mozzarella and cracked pepper.
Then, pop them in a toaster
oven.
capellini works — and add a
dash of olive oil to the water
while it’s boiling. Create your
ow n sauce using canned
crushed tomatoes, chopped red
onions, green peppers, sliced
olives, a bay leaf and loads of
black pepper. In fact, canned
tomato sauce is another great
(and cheap!) base. Simply add
spices and cheese and no one
will know it’s not homemade.
Mac and cheese
You can still make it from the
blue box, but this time around
stir in some flaked white tuna,
frozen peas and chopped red
onion before serving.
Ramen noodles
Prepare as you did mid-study
session and add cooked shrimp,
chopped tomato, cayenne pepper, a raw egg (think egg-drop
soup) and fresh shredded
lettuce, or cabbage while the
broth is still hot.
Spaghetti and bottled
sauce
Breakfast
for $3.95
Any tall hot coffee
can be paired with a
breakfast sandwich
for $3.95.
Grilled cheese
Switch to a thinner pasta —
SSENTIAL
Use thick slices of whole-wheat
bread or challah and ditch
Kraft singles for fresh white
cheddar or smoked gouda. Add
sliced tomatoes before you toss
that baby in the pan. You can
also add ham, turkey, Canadian
bacon, avocado, portobellos —
anything, really.

4 cool cocktail thirst quenchers
BY PETER M. GIANOTTI • Special to amNewYork
Whether they’re classic or more curious, summer cocktails should refresh.
Luckily, New York mixologists are shaking things up, blending the creative with the thirstquenching. Here are four cocktails with which to toast summer ‘09, some courtesy of local bars.
Harbor
Bistro Slip 10
The waterside East
Hampton restaurant’s
tangy cocktail is served
either on the rocks or in
a martini glass.

Kir royale
Mutu
The Sling
The kir royale is a classic
French aperitif. Kir is
from the former mayor
of Dijon, Canon Felix
Kir. Made with dry
white wine, it’s simply
a kir; Champagne
elevates it. You may
add a lemon peel,
although the
French don’t.
+ Champagne
or dry sparkling
wine
+ ½ ounce
creme de cassis
Pour a glass
of the sparkling
wine. Slowly pour
the cassis into it.
This cocktail from
Union Square Cafe
is published in “Mix

Nick & Toni’s.

WHAT’S IN
SEASON
By Ben Muessig
Special to amNewYork
Now is the time to try a berry with a bite. Stock
up on some red currants this week, because these
sweet and sour treats won’t be available for long.
Red currants are small round fruits that can add
a burst of color — and flavor — to salads, jams or
baked goods.
“They are a tart berry,” said farmer Fred Wilklow,
of Wilklow Orchards in Highland, N.Y., which might
run out of the berries by the end of the week. “I
think currant pancakes are great, and they’re really
good fresh in yogurt.”
Bakers have long favored fruits from these
shrubs — which are related to gooseberries —
because they can add a strong kick to pies, scones
and cakes. Chefs often use red currants as a garnish, but with their slightly sour taste, these berries are great for sauces and salad dressings.
Red currants cost about $3.50 per pint at farmers markets and greengrocers around the city.

Middle-class medical
tourism is on the rise
Depression is no game
As Washington looks for
ways to tame the country’s
health care costs, more
insurers are offering networks of doctors in places
such as India and Costa
Rica, where costs can be
as much as 80 percent less
than in America.
Until recently, most
A mer ic a n s t r avel i n g
abroad for cheaper nonemergency medical care
were either uninsured or
wealthy. But the profile of
medical tourists is changing. Now, they are more
likely to be people covered
by private insurers.
The four largest commercial U.S. health insurers have either launched
pilot programs offering
overseas travel or explored it.
But researchers
find video games
may provide help
BY SHANKAR VEDANTAM
The Washington Post
As the health care debate
rages in the U.S., many go
abroad for treatment.
In the meantime, the
insurance industry’s embrace of overseas care has
had a pleasant side effect
at home: Some U.S. care
providers are offering
price breaks to counter the
foreign competition. (AP)
Do You Suffer From
Menstrual Migraines?
Gail Nichols has suffered
from depression for years.
When the 49-year-old cannot sleep, she falls back on
a form of entertainment
that is gaining increasing
credibility as a medical intervention: video games.
Nichols said she discovered the mental health
benefits of video games
some years ago during a
particularly bad spell of
depression. When she could
not get to sleep one night,
she said, she turned on the
computer and played the
game “Bejeweled” for hours.
The inventors of the game
were surprised to hear about
its possible mental health
benefits, and the company
decided to study the untapped potential of “Bejeweled” systematically.
Carmen Russoniello, who directs
the psychophysiology lab and biofeedback clinic
at East Carolina
University in
Greenville, N.C.,
is conducting
the controlled research studies for
PopCap. He said he
has found that certain
games allow people to fall
into a rhythm where they
can play without either ef-
fort or boredom. Russoniello
said some games seem to activate the parasympathetic
nervous system, which
can reduce the heightened
tension that is a natural
response to stress.
The researcher hypothesized that one reason for
the apparent mental health
benefits of video games is
that many people in Western
countries find it impossible
to switch off; they are alert
and stressed out. Playing
certain video games, Russoniello said, offers enough
mental challenge to keep
such people occupied while
putting them into a state of
relative mindlessness.
Depression and other
disorders involve
systematic patterns of
thought and self-doubt.
New research shows
video games can put people
in a different mental zone.

NATE IN TROUBLE
+Unsigned
Knicks free agent NATE ROBINSON was booked yesterday in the Bronx for
Favre returns as Viking
Ex-Packers great unretires again for
stint with Green Bay rival Minnesota
BY DAVE CAMPBELL
The Associated Press
Brett Favre’s latest retirement lasted all of three
weeks.
The three-time MVP has
done an about-face for the
second time in as many
years and will play for the
Vikings this season, a
move that has Packers fans cringing.
“I felt I d id
everything I possibly could do to
get where I need
to be,” Favre said
yesterday. “You’re
39, your arm may
not feel like it did at
21. But the pieces are
in place that you don’t
have to do that much and I
agree with that.
“If they were willing to
take that chance, I was, too,”
said the former Jet whose
career is defined by his 16
years in Green Bay.
If the wait for Favre’s
decision seemed never-end-
ing, it was resolved in a few
short hours. He jumped on
a team plane in Mississippi
and was picked up at the St.
Paul airport by coach Brad
Childress himself.
No less than 90
minutes later, Favre
was on the field in his
familiar No. 4 jersey
with purple shorts
and a purple
helmet.
Shortly after
pract ice bega n,
the Vikings confirmed the deal
t h at seemed so
inevitable all summer,
only to be held up on
July 28 when the man
who holds every major
NFL career passing
record told Childress he
wasn’t ready to play, citing
a lack of confidence that his
beat-up body could hold up
over an entire season.
Green Bay visits Minnesota on Oct. 5, and the
Packers host the Vikings
on Nov. 1.

TAKE THE FOOT HEALTH CHECKUP
The bottoms of my heels hurt all day, but it’s
worse when I step out of bed in the morning, or
when I’m in a sitting position.
I have a large bump behind my big toe (bunion)
which is always red and enlarged.
The sides of my toenails dig into the skin and hurt.
I have corns on my toes which get thicker no
matter what shoes I wear.
My toes aren’t straight-they are all bent and
rotated.

Costner appeared in the
despicable “Waterworld,”
in 1995, his stock as an

Likewise, some NFL
notables have seen their
stocks tumble or soar in
recent weeks, affecting
their value for fantasy
football drafts.
RISING
Eddie Royal, WR, Denver:
While Broncos receiver
Brandon Marshall has
done nothing but dig a
deeper hole for himself
with new coach Josh McDaniels, Royal,
who caught
91 passes as
a rookie in
2008, is reportedly being groomed to become
Denver’s new offensive
centerpiece. He looks like
a top-20 fantasy receiver.
Ray Rice, RB, Baltimore:
Rice has reportedly had a
strong training camp and
is a first-teamer on the
Ravens’ depth chart. The
second-year Rutgers product will split carries with
Willis McGahee, but Rice
still makes for a nice No. 3
fantasy back with upside.

contract dispute — and another week or two with a
sprained left knee suffered
in the preseason opener —
Moreno seems like a risky
pick high in the draft.
Miles Austin, WR, Dallas:
Austin entered training

sleeper. But Patrick Crayton has already beaten
out Austin for the No. 2 receiver job, and Sam Hurd is
reportedly closing the gap
for the No. 3 spot.

FALLING
Steve Slaton, RB, Houston: Because Texans
coach Gary Kubiak has
doubts that the 5-foot-9
Slaton is physical
enough to be a good
short-yardage back,
Chris Brown is

will still be
Houston’s top

Brown should slide Slaton
out of the first round.
