ITunes killed music stores. But one industry is thriving despite the Internet Here’s a look and ever-shrinkat the added ing attention resources at the spans: libraries. NYPL: In fact, Gotham’s libraries have never been more popular. computers The New York in 2006 Public Library, which serves Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten in 2010 Island, has broken records, reaching 3 million cardholders e-books in 2006 and 18 million visits last year. Just five years in 2010 ago, it had fewer than 2.2 million cardholders and 13 million visits. Book circulation also peaked at 22 million in 2009, up from 15.5 million in 2005. “Right now a lot of people can’t afford services we offer, like com- 2,328 3,627 13,135 33,661 The Chatham Square Library, located at 33 E. Broadway, is regularly filled with patrons. puters or the Internet, and we have all that for free,” said NYPL public relations director Angela Montefinise. Libraries have added DVD and CD rentals, English language and computer classes, art exhibits and, of course, access to free Internet, which is now a main draw, said Paul LeClerc, president of the NYPL. For Stacy Peters, 31, of the Upper West Side, it comes down to convenience and cost. “It’s an easy way to save money but still have something to do. It’s cheaper than Netflix and I can usually find what I want,” Peters said. However, libraries remain subject to city budget cuts. The NYPL, Brooklyn Public Li- (MICHAEL KIRBY SMITH) brary and Queens Borough Public Library face a combined $16 million in cuts. Still, some visitors will stick by the library no matter what. “Libraries give people a chance to see what the rest of the world is like,” said Alan Balwin, 47, of Queens. “It gives people access to anything.” ‘Bad Samaritan’ EMT slain in SoHo An EMT accused of ignoring a pregnant woman who died after having an asthma attack at a cafe was shot dead early yesterday near an exclusive Manhattan nightclub. Jason Green, 32, of Long Island City, and a friend were turned away from Greenhouse at 150 Varick St., according to the New York Post. Moments later, at Vandam and Hudson streets, “someone exited a car and shot him,” said a police spokeswoman. The shooting was reported at 5:03 a.m., and Green was pronounced dead on arrival at New York Downtown Hospital. On Dec. 9, Green and another EMT, Melisa Jackson, made headlines after allegedly ignoring Au Bon Pain cashier Eutisha Rennix, 25, while she was in the middle of an asthma attack. When they were asked to help, the two off-duty EMTs reportedly told Rennix’s coworkers to call 911 before leaving the cafe. Jackson later said she (SHEILA ANNE FEENEY) called for help. BP’s dirty deal freed bomber? The U.S. should investigate whether oil giant BP brokered a deal to free Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi in exchange for access to Libyan oil fields, Sen. Charles Schumer said yesterday. “No matter Al-Megrahi how powerful a corporation, how important a foreign government, a blood-money deal is a blood-money deal,” Schumer said, surrounded by families of victims in the 1988 Pan Am bombing. Last August, Scotland released the cancer-stricken al-Megrahi and returned him (AP) to Libya. 2 teens drown in Bronx River Two teenagers drowned yesterday in the Bronx River, where they swam near a waterfall close to the entrance of the zoo, police said. David Luccioni, 17, and Crystal Reyes, 15, were swimming near a park at East 180th Street and Boston Road when they were overpowered by the river current, authorities said. A parks official said a sign near the river states that swimming is banned. The teens may have climbed a fence to get to the water. At the very least, Beekman Tower, Gehry’s stainless-steel-clad 76-story building, is hard to miss. And yes, New York’s tallest residential structure — parts of which could open by the end of the year — has plenty of his signature Blank pleating and folding. As part of a new series on architecture, amNewYork asked Manhattan-based architect Alice Blank to give us her take on Beekman Tower. Though acknowledging Gehry’s extraordinary feat in combining a school, a hospital and residences on a tight site, she hardly found a repeat performance of his Bilbao museum. “I look at this building and see an attractive, elegant woman wearing a superb Miyake dress with Ugg boots,” Blank said. The Beekman Street blues Hello, Mr. Woolworth Cass Gilbert’s 1913 Woolworth Building was an instant classic. Blank has a hard time seeing a similar triumph for Beekman Tower, though both share some DNA — a desire to be the tallest and to impress with excess. “That one [Woolworth] is exquisite, and this one is arguably not. While it has some great qualities, it doesn’t take your breath away. It will not become an icon for the city,” she said. As we sauntered down Beekman Street, Blank noted an irony. The blandest side of the building, with a budget-restraining straight curtain wall and an uninspired brick podium base, is on the tower’s namesake street. “One would hope for some kind of crescendo effect from here, a wow moment,” Blank said. She pictured tourists looking up from their guidebooks and missing what the big deal is about. THE VERDICT Two views that stir The blah base Think of a skyscraper in three parts: the base, the shaft and the hat. Beekman lacks a hat, but even worse, Blank said, is its base. The brick box will house a school and medical center but bears little relation to the tower. She noted that many will pass the tower and not realize it, because their eyes will be focused on the six-story base, which seems to take its contextual cues from the old adjacent hospital. “It looks like you’re looking at an extension of the New York Downtown Hospital, which in fact it is, in terms of scale and material,” she said. Walk down Beekman to the intersection with Gold Street, then look back and up. Blank savored the juxtaposition between the Beekman and the Woolworth Building. As she sees it, here and at the building’s base on Spruce Street are the most sumptuous views of the tower, where Gehry’s touch can best be appreciated, where “his trademark drama and whimsy is on full display. “From here, it’s quite beautiful. The pleating, the play of light, the sculptural surface create a special moment,” she noted. Blank sees it as a safe Gehry building — one that represents a missed opportunity. “He’s taken a conventional tower and put his signature skin on it,” she said. “It’s not as innovative and challenging as some of his early works.” She paraphrased Gehry to make her ultimate point. “A great building is of the moment, of the place, but timeless,” Blank said. “You get the name and you expect he’s going to do for New York what the Guggenheim did for Bilbao. That ain’t happening.” Beekman Tower doesn’t take enough risks, according to architect Alice Blank. NEWS Triathlon takes toll A 31-year-old man collapsed near the finish line of the city’s triathlon yesterday and was hospitalized in serious condition, race officials said. With temperatures spiking into the 90s, 11 other participants also were sent to the hospital, but none appeared to have sustained serious injuries. More than 3,000 people participated in the race, which involves a grueling swim, bike ride and run over a 31-mile course through Manhattan and the southern tip of the Bronx. Vice President Joe Biden came to the defense of the conservative political movement, saying it is not racist. “I wouldn’t characterize the Tea Party as racist,” he said yesterday on ABC’s “This Week.” But some people who’ve participated in Tea Party events or who’ve been on the periphery of them have made “really unfortunate comments.” Last week, the NAACP called out to the Tea Party to reject its “racial elements.” Biden said that the movement, which has been endorsed by Sarah Palin, has very different ideas about government than the current administration. The vice president also said he never viewed ousted Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s mocking comment Biden about him as a personal attack — but rather a reflection of policy disagreements over Afghanistan. President Barack Obama’s decision to fire the top mili- tary commander in Afghanistan over remarks in Rolling Stone magazine was “the absolutely necessary thing to do,” he said. And he added that others in the military agreed. On Iraq, Biden said that the negotiations over a power-sharing deal in the government s h o u l d n’ t prevent the U.S. from meeting its goals of ending the combat mission in August and reducing the number of (AMNY/AP) troops to 50,000. But the BlackBerry’s reign is at a critical juncture. Its place on the cutting edge has been dulled by the likes of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. The next 24 months could determine the BlackBerry’s fate, according to tech experts. “Over the next two years it will have to move more into the consumer space to compete with Apple and Google on that enormous opportunity,” said Jeff Kagan, a wireless and telecom analyst. BP spokesman Mark Salt declined to comment on the allegation, but said “we continue to work very closely with all government scientists on this.” ENTER CAPTION CONTEST The custom-built cap that finally cut off the oil was holding steady yesterday. A BP official said the company hoped to leave the cap in place until crews can permanently kill the leak. What factors do you take Galleria Dental All PPO Insurances Accepted Aetna, Cigna, Guardian, Metlife and More into account when choosing locations? I try to marry what makes most sense logistically [with] creative options via different neighborhoods I know. In my mind, I know what the looks are, and what the tones of the characters are and the financial scale, so those locations reflect well on the story and make it viable [and] compelling. On their sartorial evolution McCord: “During Season 1, we wore our own clothes. For the most part, we’ve either donated or consigned all that, except for a few things.” [She pulled out a long brown and white dress.] “I wore this in the Season 1 credits. Why do I still have it? ’Cause it’s a great dress.” MEET THEM! Swing by the Loris Diran Fall Trunk Show, hosted by the couple, tomorrow from 6-9 p.m. for some retail therapy (and cocktails!). Loris Diran Boutique, 3 E. First St. On working with a stylist McCord: “During Season 3, Simon and I did work with a stylist, Alegra Torel. I think when you have a very clear sense of style, what you want is a stylist who shares your vision and gets inside your head to create outfits that are you — as opposed to remaking you.” On shopping McCord: “Typically, we shop on weekends or on vacation. We tend not to go to department stores. We like to have relationships. We like to know [shopkeepers] and have them know us. Yes, we’ve done Bloomie’s and Barneys, but we have a person who we talk to. Also, being on the show and having people rec- ognize that we’re so into fashion has opened up the opportunity for designers that we’ve never heard of to contact us.” On personal style McCord: “My style is eclectic. I can get crazy and look like I walked out of Anna Sui or Betsey Johnson but also be super-tailored and wear Armani. I love the Louis Vuitton line Marc Jacobs did. I’m sorry Plein Sud doesn’t sell in the States anymore. On dressing to complement each other On the infamous red pleather pants M c Co r d : “If Simon says, ‘I need a bow tie to match [your] crazy Cavalli gown, that’s when we’ll go to Paul Stewart or Turnbull and Asser. Van Kempen: “I’d bought them for a [costume] party a couple of years prior and I wore them in the season finale because the producer phoned me and said, ‘Wear something crazy.’ I didn’t realize they’d make such a big splash. Wearing cheap vinyl in summer … not the best.” van Kempen: “When that fails, go to Mood [Fabrics] or cut a pair of jeans and go to a [neighborhood dry cleaner] and say, ‘make me one of these out of this.’” McCord: “One time — I have a denim ball gown by Diesel, which is awesome — the [tailor] made Simon a denim cummerbund to go with it. Just slip-covered it in denim. Done.” “I call it my ballet coat,” McCord said of this sheer Louis Vuitton jacket, which she pairs with jeans or a black dress. Travis Ishikawa’s tworun, pinch-hit single tied the game in the ninth, but he was thrown out at the plate despite replays that showed he appeared to be safe at home. Closer Brian Wilson (2-1) got the first two outs of the 10th before giving up Jason Bay’s third single of the game. Davis, who Johan Santana scattered eight hits over as many (GETTY) innings. also drove in a run in the eighth, doubled high off the right-field wall. Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez (3-2) blew his fifth save in 26 chances but earned the win when (AP) Davis delivered. They still own the best record, but the rotation’s health is suddenly very much a concern. Andy Pettitte left yesterday’s game with one out in the third inning with a strained left groin that will keep the 38-year-old lefthander out possibly “four to five weeks,” said general manager Brian Chashman. But a coterie of relievers shut down the Rays after Pettitte’s exit and the A.J. to team: ‘Sorry’ A.J. Burnett said he apologized to his Yankees teammates yesterday for a clubhouse fit that left him with cuts on both palms. Burnett said he’ll make Burnett his next scheduled start Friday against Kansas City, saying the lacerations don’t affect his ability to (AP) grip the ball. Yankees won 9-5. The Yankees roughed up Rays ace David Price for a season-worst seven runs and had 11 hits overall, including Alex Rodriguez’s 598th career home run, a solo shot off Andy Sonnanstine in the seventh (NEWSDAY) that made it 9-4. South African shocks at Brit Hardly anyone knew Louis Oosthuizen, much less how to pronounce his name. Not many will forget the performance he delivered at the home of golf to capture the British Open. A week after the World Cup ended, South Africa had more reason to celebrate yesterday, this from a most unlikely source. Oosthuizen, a 27-year-old who had only made one cut in his previous eight majors, blew away the field at St. Andrews for a victory that looked as easy as when Tiger Woods first won here a decade ago. Oosthuizen (pronounced WUHST’hy-zen) made only Woods two bogeys over the final 35 holes in a strong wind that swept across the Old Course. He led amny.com FINAL LEADERBOARD 1. Louis Oosthuizen -16 2. Phil Mickelson +1 over the final 48 holes and closed with a 1-under 71 for a seven-shot victory over Lee Westwood of England. Woods tied for 23rd to close his seventh tournament of the year without a victory, matching the longest drought of his career. “I’m not going to win all of them,” Woods said after his worst 72-hole finish in (AP) a major in six years.
