upon the circumstances and events
that Paul and a large group of men,
women, and children experienced.
Mr. Rusesabagina is the real-life
NHotel RwandaO (actually, the upscale
five-story Milles Collines hotel in
Kigali, capital city of Rwanda) general
manager whose quick sense of survival and unshakeable moral compass
protected and saved the lives of 1,268
Rwandans in the middle of what he
calls Nnot the largest genocide in the
history of the world, butT the fastest and most efficient.O Some 800,000
Rwandans were massacred between
April 6 and July 4, 1994, mostly members of the Tutsi tribe and mainly with
machetes wielded by members of the
majority tribe of Hutus.
The Tutsis, who make up just 14%
of the population, have been the tra-
ditional rulers of Rwanda; the Hutus,
who make up nearly 85% of the population were farmers. But, democratic
elections produced a Hutu president
whose plane was shot down on April
6, 1994; it was the event E most people
saw it as an assassination E that set off
the bloodletting.
Mr. Rusesabagina had nothing kind
to say about the United Nations or
then Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Paul says that when the UN voted
to send NpeacekeepersO to Rwanda,
it seemed a sign to many Tutsis, who
had fled to neighboring Uganda and
Burundi during the earlier outbreak
of civil war a couple years earlier, to
return home. They felt safe to return
under the protection of UN troops,
who turned out to offer no protection
at all. At least not to Rwandans. When
tribal warfare broke out, the peacekeepersR mission switched to ensuring
the safe departure of all, mostly white,
non-Rwandans, along with virtually
all the blue-helmeted UN troops.
Paul speculates that the Rwandan
militias knew what they were doing
when they executed ten Belgian soldiers at the beginning of the massacres. The soldiersR deaths, Paul
suggests, convinced the UN, and
the countries that had supplied the
troops, that it would behoove them
to pull the rest out before even more
of their soldiers died at the hands of
the Rwandan militias. After that, NThe
whole world decided to pull out,O he
laments. NThey decided to abandon
the whole missionT and we were all
abandoned to killers and criminals
by the United NationsT people were
being cut into pieces and the international community ran away.O
NMy hotel was the only place in
Rwanda,O Paul notes proudly, Nwhere
no one was killed, no one was cut up,
no one was beaten, from the beginning to the end of [the madness].O

the Mollers’ Montecito home
Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble
Theatre founder Janet Adderley has
the talent, the brains, the enthusiasm,
the experience, and the unmitigated
chutzpah to believe she can put on
as elaborate a show as Les Misérables,
featuring performers as young as six
and as old as 15 and get away with
it. Anyone who has seen any of Ms
AdderleyRs other productions, however, will know that she is likely to not
only Nget away withO putting on such
a show E at the Lobero, no less E but
that she will also extract outstanding performances from her young
charges. She has booked the Lobero
for her production of Les Misérables
on Saturday and Sunday, May 31 and
June 1. There will be two shows a day
at 2 pm and 6:30 pm, featuring two
completely different casts.
In order to inspire her students,
whoRve already been rehearsing for
the past few months, and their parents, Janet organized a Cheerleading
Sunday at the Montecito home of
John and Betsey Moller. The featured
speaker was movie director-producer

be both poignant and inspirational:
“I just remember my own experience,” Ivan began as he stood in the
middle of the Mollers’ living room
after a number of children had finished singing – solo – various numbers from the musical. “Our own son,
Jason, who has become quite a good
filmmaker, was enrolled in pre-med.
Somehow, he was frightened to be
going on in his father’s footsteps and
his mother’s footsteps.”
So, Ivan explains, Jason chose medicine. When he went to visit his son
at the end of his first semester, he
was dismayed to see that his son was
miserable. In order to cheer him up
or perhaps even to influence his son’s

chosen path, Ivan recounted the story
of what his own father had said to him
at a critical point in his life:
“We all escaped from Czechoslovakia
in 1950,” Ivan said, “and all my parents’ energy at that time went into,
really, sort of staying alive, learning
the language, making a living: the
normal things that immigrants do.
[At the time] I was into music. I had
a folk group – it was the 1960s, after
all,” he said with a big smile, “and

Subway shop.’
“And my father said, ‘I know…’”
Ivan had to stop talking briefly, as
tears welled up in his eyes… “I’m
sorry,” he apologized to the small
gathering, “but, it makes me emotional even to think about it.” He then
continued:
“‘…I know you’d probably do an
amazing job running a Subway sandwich shop, but I don’t think there’s
enough magic in it for you.’
“So, I told [Jason] that story, which
he now tells much better than me,
and I said, ‘Look, don’t be afraid; be
creative. If that’s what’s really inside
of you, do that.’”
It wasn’t long before Jason dropped
pre-med, enrolled in a screenwriting
course, and made his first film just a few
months later. Ivan says his son raised all
the money to make the film by selling
advertising on the school calendar.
“[Jason] solicited the advertising
through all the shops around USC
and then he put the calendars in all
the dorm rooms. And, that’s how he
financed the first film, which went on
to win like sixty awards and he never
looked back. So, I want to take this
moment to encourage you and these
kids. They are so remarkably talented.
“What Janet [Adderley] does,” he
concluded before sitting back down,
“is take these kids and make them
believe in themselves. Make them
comfortable expressing themselves.
It’s easy to sing in the shower, but
much harder to come into a room like
this and sing in front of us.”
Ms Adderley could not have asked
for a more moving and inspirational speech than that given by Ivan
Reitman on that Sunday to her small
group of talented kids and anxious
parents. Which is why, of course, that
most of us who know and admire Ms
Adderley, are sure that her production
of Les Misérables, at the Lobero, will
thrill and delight those lucky or smart
enough to have purchased tickets and
to have attended what is almost guaranteed to be a memorable and emotional theatrical experience.

On Saving History
I
was reading a recent issue of the
Montecito Journal (MJ # 20/10) at
Pierre Lafond last week, when a
friend wandered by and noticed the
cover photo that features the Hosmer
Adobe on San Ysidro Road. My friend
pointed out some interesting and
well-founded reasons for the preservation of this historic structure that
was built in 1830, has been a landmarked site since 1994, and is listed as
Santa Barbara County Landmark #34.
What my friend brought to light is
that the current owners of the property wish to demolish the existing
structure and fabricate a replica. So I
decided to take the short walk down
San Ysidro and have a look at the
property myself, which is adjacent to
the parking area for Upper Manning
Park. What I saw was a small adobe
structure swathed in blue tarpaulin, a
majestic Moreton Bay Fig Tree, and a
water tower that looked to be undergoing some reconstructive work.
What I saw made me curious for more
information on the property, and what
future it might have.
I asked my friend if there might be
more information to be provided on
the adobe, and in due course, more
was revealed:
If the adobe is in a condition to
be rehabilitated, there is a hearing
scheduled on April 22 by the Board
of Supervisors, provided the owners do not wish to restore the structure. There are proven methods of
restoration that must be considered,
because – as anyone with a classic car
knows – preservation is always better
than a rebuild.
Now, I’m no expert on the subject of
adobe construction, or the politics of
land-marked sights, but after reading
Hattie Beresford’s revealing historical
article inside the Montecito Journal, I
am convinced that every effort should
be made to rehabilitate this important historical landmark to its original
state. It should not be torn down, but
instead restored.

Hosmer Adobe can and should be preserved via restoration. – J.B.)

You and Richard Mineards have been
steadfast champions for the work
that we do with these amazing kids:
from your cover story of their Polo
Club appearances singing “The Star
Spangled Banner” to their two glorious stints this year singing for Oprah,
to highlighting all their efforts for
the last eight years onstage at the
Lobero. It is my honor to serve the
Santa Barbara community in this way
and your faith in me means more than
you could possibly know.
This year, SBYET is geared up for
its greatest challenge to date. We will
have 50-plus children between the
ages of eight and 15 performing Les
Misérables. Ivan Reitman’s passionate
endorsement is so powerful and such
a great boost of confidence for these
courageous kids.

Reap Don’t Rake
I read Lisa Cullen’s column about
mulching around plants (“Garden
Gossip,” MJ 20/9 & 20/10). I’m a
gardener and in the last month I have
stopped raking up leaves; rather, I
blow them into planter beds to add to
the mix.
This past Thursday, I was working
in Montecito and the gardeners next
door were raking up the leaves in the
driveway and those that had blown
into the raised beds. I thought it was
ironic that you are advising people to
add mulch, while the gardeners are in
effect removing it.
