Life• Style - The Adderley School for the Performing Arts
Life • Style by Judy Foreman Ms Foreman, a Santa Barbara freelance writer, has been covering fitness, beauty, health, fashion, new businesses and lifestyle trends for the Journal since 1998. She blogs @ judyforemanknowssantabarbara.com Lights, Action, and Janet Adderley The Adderley School Staff: recording artist Todd Jenkins, former Adderley School director and recording artist Akina Adderley, associate director Alana Adderley, owner and artistic director Janet Adderley, musical director Anthony Janssen and instructor Maria Alfieri Janet and Alana Adderley and their students (and aspiring students) at the Adderley School Open House T he smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd were in full regalia on the afternoon of September 5 as over one hundred people gathered to attend the Open House and grand opening of Janet Adderley’s new theatrical studio for children. Aspiring thespians and their parents noshed on food and were treated to entertainment by many of the children present (some as young as 3 years old!). Girls and boys who had performed in the Adderley School’s most recent summer musical dance production of “Footloose,” also entertained with several song and dance numbers. Janet, who puts the “E” in enthusiasm, had the audience in the palm of her hand as attendees stood or sat on the bleached hardwood floors surrounded by industrial-height 12-fthigh open ceilings and exposed brick walls in an almost NY urban dance studio environment. Ms Adderley Maryanne Contreras, Tammy Hughes and Kyle Brace at the Adderley School Open House explained her love of live theater and how it can provide a healthy vehicle not just for entertainment but an opportunity and place for children to succeed. She said theatre can transform an otherwise shy child and help develop self-confidence. Having two daughters of her own, she opened a studio in Pacific Palisades in 1997. As an actress, Ms Adderley enjoyed a career on Broadway that included roles in “Cats” and “Starlight Express,” so she knows theater from the inside out, as a performer and a mom. When she first visited Montecito and Santa Barbara in 2005, she quickly found her niche with children from 5 years old, putting on professional quality productions. My own daughter, Lizzy, now 17, performed in one of her first productions of “Grease” as the sultry Rizzo. The Adderley School’s Fall 2009-10 season will include “The Sound of Music,” “Shrek the Musical,” “Damn Yankees,” “Cinderella,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Mama Mia,” “The Wiz,” “Pinocchio,” “Grease,” and “Guys and Dolls.” Ms Adderley will also be expanding her class roster to include dance workshops including beginning-level adult ballet, tap, jazz and other intensive workshops for those with dance experience. The school has teamed up with Lobero Theater, where the youth ensemble theater will perform its production of “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying” in the spring. The newly enlarged State Street Studio has already been used to film rehearsal sequences for the television hit “Dancing with the Stars,” where celebrity Montecito resident Kathy Ireland is preparing for this season’s competition. Judging by the number of people at the opening, including the kids who adore and look up to Ms Adderley, she and her staff already have lots of fans before the curtain even goes up. The studio is located at 316 A State Street in Santa Barbara. For more information call 805-899-3680 or visit www.adderleyschool.com. The school is now registering for Fall. •MJ CONSIDERING A COMMODITY INVESTMENT?
