SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (PG-13: v) Action/Adventure
June 12
It’s 1891 and a series of bombings are escalating tension between
Germany and France, something not only welcomed but also
plotted by the dastardly Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris)
who would financially profit from any related war expenses. Legendary if eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey
Jr.) is pretty sure he’s the culprit, but needs further proof. Unfortunately, his former sidekick, Dr. John Watson (Jude Law), is busy
preparing to settle down and wed Mary (Kelly Reilly), something
that doesn’t seem natural to Holmes. He doesn’t invite anyone
to Watson’s stag party other than his own brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry), who has ties to politicians of the day. He’s
also after gypsy fortune teller Simza (Noomi Rapace) who he
believes knows something about what’s occurring. After Holmes
saves her from an assassin, and manages to dispatch Mary to
stay with Mycroft, he, Watson and Simza set off not only to prove

(Berenice Bejo), into one of his films. But Al sees that times
are changing and wants to move over to the new format of
“talkies,” something that George thinks is a silly fad. Over the

From TV To The Movies
By Susan Varno
We TV watchers enjoy seeing our favorite TV programs made
into full length movies. In the 1980’s a band of outlaw
heroes known as THE A-TEAM (2010-Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper) protected helpless folks from evildoers. Now
they’re Army Rangers on a secret mission during the Iraq
War. From 1966 to 1973, the “Mission: Impossible” team
meticulously executed plans to save the world. Today, Ethan
Hunt (Tom Cruise) takes down terrorists, arms dealers and
megalomaniacs in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (1996), II (2000),
III (2006) and GHOST PROTOCOL (2011). The 1980’s series
MIAMI VICE (2006) featured two
hip undercover cops. For the
movie the partners (Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx) pose as
international cocaine dealers.
San Francisco cops STARSKY
AND HUTCH (2004-Ben Stiller
and Owen Wilson) fast forward
from the 1970’s to present
day. On their first assignment
together, they go off the grid to
take down drug dealers. Agents
Mulder (David Duchovny) and
Scully (Gillian Anderson) are
still looking for aliens in THE XFILES (1998) and THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE (2008). THE
DUKES OF HAZZARD (2005-Seann William Scott and Johnny
Knoxville) are still outrunning Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds)
in the General Lee through backwoods Georgia. The 1966
to 1969 series STAR TREK (2009) spawned twelve theatrical
movies. The most recent one tells of James T. Kirk’s (Chris
Pine) troubled childhood, his early Starfleet days, and why he
hates the Romulans. For sitcoms, SEX AND THE CITY (2008)
continues where the series left off in 2004. Three New York
City BFFs (Kim Cantrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis)
help their gal pal (Sarah Jessica Parker) plan her ultra-wedding. See also SEX AND THE CITY 2 (2010). Based on the twenty three year series, THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (2007) has Homer
(voice of Dan Castellaneta) making Lake Springfield so toxic
the EPA puts a dome over the city. For the updated 1960’s
series GET SMART (2008) Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) is now
a liberated woman, and Max (Steve Carell) is a shy computer
nerd. See also THE HONEYMOONERS 2005-Cedric the Entertainer, Mike Epps) based on the 1950’s series. Children’s TV
series include HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE (2009) with the
teen singing sensation (Miley Cyrus) returning to her rural
hometown disguised as an ordinary kid. Introduced in 1958,
YOGI BEAR (2010-voice of Dan Akyroyd) and Boo Boo (voice
of Justin Timberlake) must save Jellystone Park, and former
police canine UNDERDOG (2007-voice of Jason Lee) uses his
superpowers to stop criminals. See also the 1970’s Saturday morning series LAND OF THE
LOST (2009-Will Ferrell), and
those little blue creatures THE
SMURFS (2011). Some movies
go behind the scenes of real
TV programs. Fictional stories
include BEWITCHED (2005-Will
Ferrell). The sitcom unknowingly hires a real witch (Nicole
Kidman) who is trying to live as
a mortal. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
(2008) is about a ghetto youth
(Dev Patel) in Mumbai, India,
who is a contestant on the local version of “Who Wants To
Be A Millionaire.” Flashbacks of his life reveal how he knows
the “final” answers. THE CROCODILE HUNTER: COLLISION COURSE
(2002) shows Steve Irwin filming his 1997 to 2004 wildlife
series. At the same time, he’s trying to protect a crocodile
that has swallowed a device from a crashed satellite. Mostly
a true story, CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND (2002) is
the biopic of Chuck Barris (Sam Rockwell) who created the
“The Dating Game,” “The Newlywed Game” and “The Gong
Show.” GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK (2005) is about Edward R.
Murrow’s (David Strathairn) “See It Now” TV series. In 1953,
he courageously revealed the vicious practices of egomaniac
Senator Joseph McCarthy. In 1977 former President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella) appeared in four TV interviews
with talk show host David Frost (Michael Sheen). FROST/NIXON
(2008) details the negotiations and shows how Frost got him
to talk about Watergate.
Another Look – Jonah Hill
On December 15, 1983, Jonah Hill Feldstein was born into a show business family in Los Angeles. His father was an accountant for
Guns N’ Roses; his mother was a costume designer. After high school, Hill studied acting at New York’s New School. At a nearby
East Village bar, he performed short plays he wrote. Rebecca and Jake Hoffman caught his act and introduced him to their father
Dustin who arranged an audition for I HEART HUCKABEES (2004). Hill got the part which got him an agent who introduced
him to Judd Apatow. The director hired the 5’ 7” actor for a small role in THE 40- YEAR OLD VIRGIN (2005). After cameos in
GRANDMA’S BOY and CLICK (both 2006), Hill played a computer geek in ACCEPTED (2006) about the “founder” (Justin Long)
of a phony university. Apatow chose Hill as one of Seth Rogen’s slacker friends in the comedy sleeper hit KNOCKED UP, and he
had a role in EVAN ALMIGHTY (both 2007), an updated version of Noah’s Ark. Hill’s first starring role was in Apatow’s SUPERBAD
(2007). As a high school senior, he and his friend (Michael Cera) wangle an invite to a hot chick party by promising to supply
the booze. This leads to a night of manic adventures. He also cameoed as the older brother in WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY (2007). In 2008, he
played a waiter at a posh Hawaiian resort in FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, was one of the STRANGE WILDERNESS crew trying to film a Bigfoot in
Ecuador, and voiced a Whoville child in HORTON HEARS A WHO! The next year, he cameoed as a security guard one NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE FOR
THE SMITHSONIAN, had a supporting role in FUNNY PEOPLE, and played the suicidal neighbor of a man (Ricky Gervais) credited with THE INVENTION OF
LYING. By 2010, Hill had moved into starring and costarring parts. He voiced a Viking warrior in HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and is expected to repeat
the role for the 2014 sequel. He starred as the hapless record company employee entrusted with GETTING HIM TO THE GREEK, “him” being a chronically
stoned aging British rocker (Russell Brand) and “The Greek” being a concert arena in Los Angeles. In a more serious role, Hill played CYRUS, an unemployed
son who is much too close to his mother (Marisa Tomei). When her new boyfriend (John C. Reilly) comes around, Cyrus tries to sabotage the relationship.
Next he was the voice of a sweet guy who villainous MEGAMIND (Will Ferrell) turns into a superhero. When he discovers his superpowers, Hill’s character
uses them for evil instead. Last year, he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for MONEYBALL, the true story of how the Oakland A’s general

student hired as THE SITTER who drags his charges across town one night to be with his hot girlfriend. This month 21 JUMP STREET (2012) will be released

Ever since journeying to the center of the earth a few years earlier, teenage
Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) has dreamed of another adventure. He gets
his chance when he receives a coded message from his grandfather (Michael
Caine), who believes he has found author Jules Verne’s fabled Mysterious Island.
Sean’s mother (Kristin Davis) is relieved when her husband and Sean’s stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), volunteers to go with Sean to the island. Unfortunately, a storm quickly develops that causes their copter to crash. They wash
ashore on the island and find that it’s a magical place. Everything that is big in
the real world is small (elephants are the size of puppy dogs) and everything
that is small is big (lizards are the size of dinosaurs). They also find the Lost
City of Atlantis and a volcano that spews gold ash. Unfortunately the island is
sinking and they will all be underwater in a few days - or possibly hours - if they
don’t find a way to escape. With Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens. 94 min.

Snow White (Lily Collins) has essentially been a prisoner in her own kingdom since she was
a little girl and her widowed king father went missing shortly after marrying the Evil Queen
(Julia Roberts). The Queen, envious of Snow White’s beauty and disgusted by her goodness, keeps the 18-year-old girl confined in her bedroom away from the starving, suffering
masses while she rules with complete indifference. But The Queen has spent too freely and
lived carelessly too long. When the dashing Prince Alcott (Armie Hammer) comes for a visit
and tells her stories of the great wealth and prosperity his land enjoys, she immediately
schemes to marry him. One problem. He has already gotten a look at Snow White and has
fallen in love with her. When The Queen orders Snow White taken from the castle and killed,
her loyal subject Brighton (Nathan Lane) can’t bring himself to do it. He frees the girl and
tells her to run. Snow White, though, falls in with seven thieving dwarfs and together they
hatch a plan to take back her kingdom and restore the land. 106 min.

In 1988, a family of three gray whales became trapped beneath rapidly forming ice in Alaska. The
story was first reported by local newsman, Adam Carlson (John Krasinski), who dreams of landing
a job stateside and senses the whales’ plight could be his ticket to bigger and better things. His
story goes national and attracts the attention of Greenpeace activist and former girlfriend, Rachel
(Drew Barrymore); and hotshot L.A. reporter Jill Jerard (Kristen Bell). Looking for positive PR is
oil industry executive J.W. McGraw (Ted Danson), whose wife, Ruth (Kathy Baker), convinces him
that whoever saves those whales will look like a hero to the world. He manages to convince the
military under the command of Colonel Scott Boyer (Dermot Mulroney) to use his helicopters and a
special ice-cutting barge to free the whales. Plummeting temperatures and the fact that the baby
whale has fallen ill and is severely scarred from banging his head against the jagged ice start to
complicate matters. Inspired by a true story. 106 min.
DVD Extras: Commentary, Deleted Scenes; “Truth is Stranger Than Fiction” Featurette.
