This year, the CCMA was proud to announce a new partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada, through which the organization pledged to support the Program through their RBC Emerging Artists Project. Over 180 applications from across the country were submitted for the Program this year. An industry-led jury whittled the list down to six deserving finalists: David James, The Lovelocks (Ali Raney and Zoe Neuman), Jordan McIntosh, Emily Reid, Tanya Ryan and Nicole Scott. #CCMAdiscovery Also, thank you to the CCMA Discovery Showcase band WENDELL FERGUSON [leader] acoustic & electric guitar JERRY ADOLPHE drums JOHN DYMOND bass DARREN SAVARD electric guitar MIKE SANYSHYN fiddle BART MCKAY keyboards DOUG JOHNSON steel guitar TIANNA LEFEVBRE background vocals The Discovery journey began for these six acts when they convened in Toronto this past spring for Music Industry Discovery Week. It was at this time that the finalists learned, in-depth, about the music business and artist development through industryled information sessions and seminars. Performance coaching, a stylist appointment and an industry-only showcase rounded out the experience. Over the course of the summer, each act benefited from a mentorship with an established Canadian country musical act. Lisa Brokop, Chad Brownlee, Patricia Conroy, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Charlie Major and the Small Town Pistols all lent their time and expertise to the finalists and the program, and for that the CCMA is truly thankful. The Discovery Program elicits a special bond among its finalists. Regardless of the outcome, the six acts look forward to meeting once again at Country Music Week, when the 2014 CCMA Discovery Award winner will be announced. The six will perform at the CCMA Discovery Showcase on Thursday, September 4 at 8:30pm at the Shaw Conference Centre in front of fans and music industry influencers. The evening will be hosted and will include a performance by this year’s Slaight Music Humanitarian Award winner, Beverley Mahood. Last year’s CCMA Discovery Program winner, Wes Mack, will also take the stage. A jury of industry professionals will be onsite to adjudicate the finalists’ performances, coinciding with several other criteria, including an essay each finalist drafted on their CCMA Discovery Program experience. One act will be honoured, at a private industry function, as the recipient of the 2014 CCMA Discovery Award with prizing that includes: music video funding (courtesy of CMT Canada), an Epiphone DR-500MCE guitar (courtesy of Gibson), cash prizing (courtesy of Galaxie), other industry-related prizing, and new this year – a performance spot on the 2015 CMA Music Festival Global Artist Party showcase in Nashville. Playing the 2013 CCMA Awards Show was a dream come true! Autumn Hill 2014 NOMINEES & PERFORMERS WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? We met a couple whose song was “Anything At All”. It meant so much to them that the guy had an anchor and the lyrics tattooed on his back! It was crazy! WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? Tareya: I always loved country music; growing up in Calgary, I developed a deep appreciation for it. Mike: When I was a kid my dad used to play Johnny Cash records. I became obsessed with country music and its amazing guitarists like Vince Gill, Brent Mason and Keith Urban. WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? My first ever # 1 Billboard hit for “When Your Lips Are So Close”. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? At all of our shows the fans are so great, but I really love the charity side of my job and making a difference in people’s lives – those interactions mean the most. WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? I loved music since the day I was born, but it was the music in the early 1990s, and Garth Brooks that made me fall in love with real country music. “God Bless Chris Ledoux”. Gord Bamford 2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER 24 COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014 CCMA AWARDS NOMINEE Q&A WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? For me, it was the Your Town Throwdown Tour in the fall across Canada with my pals Deric Ruttan and Chad Brownlee. We had a blast! Jason Blaine 2014 NOMINEE WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? I met a fan at the Calgary Stampede this summer who tattooed “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like That Anymore” on her arm! She said my song just meant that much to her. WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? I grew up with country radio, TNN, CMT, The Grand Ole Opry and nights around the campfire singing Garth, Alan, Brooks & Dunn, George and more. WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? [Ryan Langlois] It would have to be our debut at Big Valley Jamboree this summer. As a western Canadian kid growing up, BVJ was the BIGGEST country music event going. To play the main stage and receive a standing ovation, then to perform at the songwriter tent with Russell deCarle (who is a big inspiration for me) and sing “One Way Track” with him, was truly incredible. The Boom Chucka Boys WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? It was around our third night at Nashville North (Calgary Stampede) this year. The place was jammed with a couple thousand rowdies and when we started playing our single “Peace Of Mind”, this guy rushed the stage with his girlfriend and started singing, check that, screaming the song at the top of his lungs, word for word. Pretty darn cool! WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? Probably in the back-back seat of my family’s old wood panelled Ford station wagon. My folks listened to all kinds of music but always seemed to end up back at country. Willie, Merle, Cash, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Asleep At The Wheel, and many more. 2014 NOMINEES 25 COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014 CCMA AWARDS NOMINEE Q&A WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? Hands down, without a doubt, being nominated for the 12th time for the CCMA Fans’ Choice Award. There was also the amazing reception we received to my first single in over two years, “Forever Summer”, and shows for the National Music Centre, Prince Edward Island Celebration Zone, Boots and Hearts and of course, the Full Circle concert event at the Saddledome during The Calgary Stampede. But mostly, the nomination. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? That time when a lot of fans online let me know that they voted for me for the Fans’ Choice Award, and then I followed them on Twitter. That was cool. Paul Brandt WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? I was a Garth convert. I have a pretty broad musical palette, and enjoy many genres and artists, but when I saw the energy and rock music sensibilities he brought to great storylines and traditional country music, I suddenly found my own musical North Star in country music as a writer and artist. 2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? Making the transition from smaller venues into the arenas was definitely a career milestone for me. The advantage to smaller venues is that it’s easier to connect with my fans. The challenge of going to a larger stage is keeping that intimacy – a huge challenge but one I feel we were able to accomplish. I felt each night that the guys and I were still right there with them. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? I met a little boy in an autograph line in Barrie; he was a special little guy, full of life. He waited over two hours to meet me. For some reason we talked for a while that day. He pretended to be disinterested at points and looking down at his shoes with an ‘aw shucks’ kind of way about him…he was very memorable. He passed away tragically just a few months later. Life is fragile, he reminds me of that. He reminds me that every person I meet has a very real story behind the few seconds that I spend with them. Dean Brody 2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? When I was 5 years old I had a Mickey Mouse record player and a 45 of The Ballad of Davy Crockett. I ran around the house in my coonskin hat and wore that song out. That was the beginning of my love of country music. My dad also listened to the radio a lot, which opened the doors to artists like Dwight Yoakam, who ultimately sealed the deal for me. 26 COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014 CCMA AWARDS NOMINEE Q&A WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? I got to meet a few fans at a Worship concert that were suffering from cerebral palsy and were confined to a wheelchair. They were an incredible inspiration to me and a real blessing to get to meet and chat with. WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? Making an album with Michael Knox (Jason Aldean’s producer) and winning the CCMA Fans’ Choice Award last year. I am still in shock! WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? We launched a very successful PledgeMusic campaign to fund my new album. It has been a great way to have tons of personal one-on-one fan interactions and keep them involved in the process of making the album. From golf, to dinners, to bowling… everything has been very memorable and fun! WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? Although I grew up around it and around musicians, when I saw the Barbara Mandrell Show it opened up a whole new world to me. By the age of 14, I was pretty much obsessed! Terri Clark 2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER 27 COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014 CCMA AWARDS NOMINEE Q&A WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? Winning the CCMA Spotlight Competition! It meant so much because it was determined by fan votes and their support makes everything that I do possible. Leah Daniels 2014 NOMINEE WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? After one of my shows, I was at my merch table saying hi to everyone who came out. This one guy knew he couldn’t have much time because there was a line-up; but he lined up repeatedly, buying one thing each time so he could talk to me over and over. WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? When I was young, my grandpa used to always play old country/western tunes. I remember listening to the lyrics and falling in love with the storytelling right away. WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? The past year has been quite a whirlwind; but some definite highlights have been getting to hear my song on country radio for the first time, playing over 50 shows on the We Are Pioneers worldwide tour with The Band Perry, sharing the stage with Keith Urban at the Calgary Stampede and getting to make my debut at the Grand Ole Opry. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? I toured Europe for the first time with The Band Perry this past year. There was a group of girls from the UK that came to about 8 shows on the tour. They would show up early at the venue to be the first ones in line so the minute the doors would open, they could rush up to the stage to be front row center. By the second show they came to, they had gone on YouTube and learned my whole set. Every night they would be there, front row center, singing along and doing actions to all the songs. Their passion and excitement for music truly inspired me. Lindsay Ell 2014 NOMINEE WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? I first developed my love for country music when I was about 8 years old, traveling to bluegrass camps with my dad, soaking up every ounce of music that I could, listening to a lot of Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel. Starting on piano at age 6, a couple years later all I wanted to do was be Shania Twain. I knew every word to almost any Shania, Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill song. From there I just listened to the radio for hours on end, playing guitar solo after guitar solo. 28 COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014 CCMA AWARDS NOMINEE Q&A WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? There have been so many highlights. I think the thing that most stands out to me was playing Boots and Hearts this year with Lee Brice and Luke Bryan. It was really an emotional moment listening and watching 35,000 people sing my songs back to me. It was a thrill and a night I’ll never forget. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? All those moments are memorable to me. It still floors me that I can meet someone I don’t know and they know my music. That’s really all you can ask for as an artist... so cool! Tim Hicks 2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? I had an uncle that played acoustic guitar when my brother and I were growing up. I thought he was the world’s most brilliant songwriter... that is, until he told me one day that all those songs were by Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and John Prine! So I suppose my love for country came early and never left my bones. WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? I would have to say, getting to meet and write with people in Nashville that I have always looked up to has been a highlight in the past year. I feel like I’ve grown as a person and as an artist. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? That would have to be on my most recent promo tour out east: I met a girl from Moncton who could unfortunately relate to my new single “Quarterback” all too well. She was with her mother who was very emotional, and she thanked me for shedding light on a subject that she herself had felt ashamed to even talk about. She had finally come to peace with it and realized that none of it was her fault. Moments like that are the most gratifying thing in the world. Kira Isabella WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? My parents have always loved country music. My mom grew up on a farm in Orangeville, and they both lived in Calgary for a while when my father was in the military. Some of my earliest memories are of my mom singing old country songs to me that her father sang to her when she was growing up. My heart has always been in country. 2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER 29 COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014 CCMA AWARDS NOMINEE Q&A WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? This has been an unbelievable year for me, so it’s difficult to pick just one career highlight in 2013/2014. In general, I believe the highlights were the amazing shows I was able to perform at. There’s nothing I enjoy more than playing live! From 25,000 people at the Kick Off Party for Boots and Hearts, to performing and hanging out with Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, on Canada Day in Ottawa, to winning the Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? When I was on the Young Guns tour, we made a stop in Kamloops, BC. The sold out crowd was nothing short of amazing, but following the show, in the autograph line, a lady asked me for an autograph on her arm. She insisted she was going to get my signature “tattooed”... So, I signed my name and in a few weeks, she Tweeted me a photo of the tattoo. I couldn’t believe it! That was definitely a first! Brett Kissel WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? My love for country music started at a very young age. I grew up on a cattle ranch in Flat Lake, Alberta just a few hours North East of Edmonton. In fact, I’m the fifth generation on the same piece of land; my grandfather’s grandfather purchased it back in 1910. Coming from that background, country music obviously came naturally to me. 2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEAR? The first songs I learned as a small kid were old cowboy songs that my grandpas knew. Shortly thereafter I discovered that Marty Robbins sang them too. I also have vivid memories of Willie and Waylon songs being pumped out of those crappy metal loudspeakers at small town rodeos I used to ride steers at as a kid in the ’70s. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION FROM THE PAST YEAR? I played Golden Spike Days, a festival in Port Moody on Canada Day. I had a front row of tiny little fans. After I finished my set this sweet little 5 year old girl kept running up to me to give me hugs. I think she gave me ten hugs! It was so cute! WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY MUSIC? I owe it all to my mama! She would listen to Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Dolly Parton. A JUNO-nominated performer, Ferguson is also a multiple CCMA Award nominee, has won the CCMA All Star Band – Guitar Award six times, and served on the CCMA Board of Directors as well. Ferguson was a leading force and songwriter for the country group Coda The West in the ’80s, and continues to be a highly sought producer, musical director and band leader. RON SAKAMOTO As the 2014 Builder inductee, Ron Sakamoto will receive the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Stan Klees Builder Award in recognition of his career in live event production and management that spans an impressive 48 years. Working tirelessly to create opportunity for Canadian country music artists both in Canada, and the U.S., Sakamoto has always advocated the benefits of bringing acts to secondary markets, and consistently gives back to those communities himself. Over the years, Sakamoto has won over 40 awards in the music industry, including an unprecedented 17 consecutive CCMA Awards for Talent Buyer or Promoter of the Year, which resulted in the Award being named after him. Sakamoto has served on the board of the Country Music Association (CMA) in Nashville as well as the CCMA, and currently sits on the International Entertainment Buyers Association (IEBA) Board of Directors. CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME MEMBERS Since 1984, the CCMA has been honouring Canadian artists and industry builders who have made long-term contributions to the growth and development of Canadian country music. A successful singer, songwriter, actress, model and television host, Beverley Mahood is wellknown as a popular and dynamic entertainer, yet it’s Mahood’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian work that has become her indisputable calling card. With a passion for community endeavors that nearly rivals her love of music, Mahood has chosen to focus much of her charitable efforts on causes that benefit children. 2014 marked Mahood’s 17th consecutive year cohosting the Kinsmen Telemiracle, which raises Beverley Mahood funds for families of children with disabilities and people with special needs within the province of Saskatchewan. Mahood devotes her time to this 20-hour live event annually, often spending up to a week in the province pre-show to promote and engage the local community. Over $65 million dollars has been raised via the Kinsmen Telemiracle since Mahood began co-hosting, an impressive figure given the province’s one millionperson population. HANK SMITH AWARD OF EXCELLENCE Deane Cameron To commemorate his indelible impact on the Canadian country music industry and his tenacity for finding and mentoring great talent, Deane Cameron is the 2014 recipent of the Hank Smith Award of Excellence. Cameron’s storied career began humbly, as he worked his way up through the ranks of the music industry. He eventually made history when he became the youngest Canadian President of a major music label in 1988. In addition, Mahood is a long-time supporter of Canada’s Food Banks, Corus Feeds Kids and Tom Jackson’s The Huron Carole. She is also the national spokesperson for the Pink Mitten Campaign which supports breast cancer research, a role she has happily filled since 2010. There are at least a dozen other organizations and programs she continues to support and make time for, making her a worthy recipient of this CCMA Award of Achievement. He has played a significant role in the careers of such Canadian artists as Susan Aglukark, Terri Clark, Tom Cochrane, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Rita MacNeil, John McDermott, Anne Murray, The Rankin Family, Johnny Reid, Serena Ryder, Buffy Sainte-Marie and many, many more. He worked equally hard in developing international musicians in Canada. Cameron has contributed to the soundtrack of nearly four eras of great music for Canadians. During his 24 years as President of EMI Music Canada, Cameron was a trailblazer when it came to signing labels for distribution. In 2010 he became a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the arts and music, and in 2011 he was the recipient of the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award at the JUNO Awards. Cameron was on the CCMA Board of Directors for 12 years, has served on the CARAS board since 1985, played a key role in the development of MusiCounts and currently sits on the board for the Unison Benevolent Fund. It is for all of these reasons, and more, that the CCMA is proud to bestow upon Cameron a well-deserved Award of Achievement. 40 COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014 CCMA AWARDS 2014 NOMINEES MALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR Gord Bamford SONGWRITER(S) OF THE YEAR Paul Brandt BOUNTY Dean Brody FANS’ CHOICE AWARD Dean Brody written By: Dean Brody; performed By: Dean Brody George Canyon HELL RAISIN’ GOOD TIME Johnny Reid SINGLE OF THE YEAR written By: Jeff Coplan, Tim Hicks, Casey Marshall, Neil Sanderson; performed By: Tim Hicks MINE WOULD BE YOU Gord Bamford Brett Kissel Dallas Smith Bobby Wills GROUP OR DUO OF THE YEAR Dean Brody written By: Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington, Deric Ruttan; performed By: Blake Shelton STARTED WITH A SONG STARTED WITH A SONG The Boom Chucka Boys written By: Brett Kissel, Craig Wiseman; performed By: Brett Kissel The Road Hammers BOUNTY Brett Kissel TAKE THE WEEK OFF Deric Ruttan TIPPIN’ POINT Dallas Smith WHEN YOUR LIPS ARE SO CLOSE WHEN YOUR LIPS ARE SO CLOSE written By: Gord Bamford, Brent L.
