Annual Report / July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013 Board Staff OFFICERS LEADERSHIP TEAM Riguey King, Chair Ellen Johnston, Vice Chair Henry Simmons, PhD, Secretary Steve Quiriconi, Treasurer Karen Legato, MPS, MSW Executive Director DIRECTORS Gonzalo Bearman, MD, MPH, FACP Kim Farlow Ken Gunn, Jr June Henderson, MD Rev Micah Jackson Bev Koerin, PhD Roger Neathawk Suzanne Stumpf Laura Windsor, Esq Mission Kathy Benham, MA, LPC Director of Client Support & Mental Health Services Rich Bodemann, BA Director of Administration & Facility Manager Mary Colfer, MD Medical Director Cathy Wheeler, RN Director of Clinical Operations To provide medical treatment, health education and outreach, support services and advocacy for those in the Richmond area with limited access to care. We place special emphasis on welcoming the least served. All jellybeans appearing in t his repor t are sugar-free! Executive Letter W hy Jellybeans? They are bold, colorful, diverse, bright and fun. We see them often in baskets with peeps and chocolate bunnies. They are a familiar treat recognized across the life span from young to old. We enjoy them the most at the spring time of the year when all is blooming. Jelly beans are the perfect metaphor for Fan Free Clinic. In our 45th year of service, we are more diverse than ever... just look at the make-up of our staff, our patients and clients, our volunteers, our donors and even our funding/resource streams. We are multi-colored, gender-varied, young-old, straight-LGBTQ, and cut across various spiritual traditions, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Our diversity, one of our strongest assets, demands that we work creatively and collaboratively to deliver care that is person-centered, sensitive to the needs of those we serve, and that we demonstrate effectiveness through quality measures. This report highlights the many achievements and challenges throughout the year. Our mission remained the grounding force to improve our services while FFC leadership was fully engaged in assessing “who we are, who we serve, what we do, how well we do it, and where we are going.” To assist us in this discovery process, our board convened a panel of healthcare experts and funders in the region to share their insights on navigating the complexities of the current environment and the implications for organizational strategic planning. As we continue to embrace our potential and plan for the challenges ahead, we celebrate the success of our Development Program in reconnecting with decades of former leaders, constituents, supporters, volunteers and friends. We extend our gratitude to some very special champions who made large investments in Fan Free Clinic at a pivotal time in our planning and renewal. We raised over $1.4 million in contributed funds this past year and reached over 11,000 individuals through 28,000 service encounters. We remain grateful to all of you who have guided and supported us thus far and ask that you stay the course with us as we move toward our 50th in 2018! Riguey King Board Chair Karen Legato Executive Director 1 Service Stats Fan Free Clinic has served the community since its founding in 1968 as the first free clinic in Virginia and one of the first in the nation. Care plans are based on achieving the patient’s fullest potential for health and wellness. Patient receives an initial exam. Patient has labs drawn and is offered an HIV test. Patient receives diagnosis of diabetes and receives a meter and training to test blood sugar at home. In addition, nutrition counseling is available to create a plan for meals. 4 Photos are for illustrative purposes. Photos by Ashleigh Hobson. "This has been the most comprehensive human medical experience I've had since I was a kid...thank you all for doing what you do--it is so appreciated." —Medical Clinic Patient, 2013 Because a new diagnosis can cause additional stress, the patient can be referred to our mental health program. Patient care can also include participation in Commit to Be Fit--a patient, volunteer and staff integrated exercise and wellness program. “Working with my counselor helped me learn new, healthy ways to deal with stress. I’m a better employee and family member now since I’m not always stressed out.” —Mental Health Client, 2013 Patient is seen for regular follow-up visits to monitor progress and assess future needs. 5 Community Connections, Outreach & Education Fan Free Clinic serves beyond the walls of our fixed location on Thompson Street. Guests were treated to the beauty of the gardens, fine music, food and drink during an evening of enrichment and recognition. Fan Free Clinic raised over $31,000 from this firsttime event. We intend to build on the program’s success in 2013-2014. The formal program included an address by Frank Robinson, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden CEO, on how gardens heal communities. FFC Executive Director Karen Legato then blended the discussion of the work of the agency with a presentation of the Exceptional Dedication and Service Award to three FFC volunteers/advocates: Dr. June Henderson, Dr. Christopher Kogut and Richmond City Councilwoman Dr. Cynthia Newbille.
