Caldecott Hall Golf Club Newsletter Issue number 13/05 date: September 2013 Club Captain T he Captains Festival took place on Sunday 4th August with a field of 52 entrants competing for prizes worth over £460. The winning team consisted of K. Hubbard, J. Standen, H. Leivers and J Banham with an impressive score of 56.5. Four teams went away with prizes, with only one shot separating the places for the next three teams. John Plane, following the use of an improvised ‘roulette’ wheel system, won the golfing weekend to Stoke by Nayland. John, we hope you enjoy the experience. My ‘A’ team slipped down the league after a strong start but came back with some excellent performances in the competition that follows the league, Winner of Captain’s Festival John Banham, Karen Hubbard, Jayne Standen and Harrison Leivers pictured with Phil Calver Club Captain and Eileen Banham Lady Captain Simpsons’s charity golf day on 18th August was a great success, with total prizes in excess of £1,000. This event has become a firm favourite in our golfing calendar. My thanks to Gary Aldis and all those at Simpsons who put a lot of work into making this happen, not just the golfing side but the exhibition of some very smart vehicles around the club house. Congratulations to Graham and Mathew Banyard who took first place on the day. Each year the Norfolk County Golf Union hold a competition to commemorate the founding of the NCGU in 1908, this is called the Roger Trower Armada Dish. Teams from many Norfolk golf clubs will be competing at Royal Norwich Golf Club for this prestigious trophy and the following Caldecott players have qualified to accompany me to this event on 8th September, Harrison Leivers, Peter Ogden and Kevin Huggins. The Thursday League competition has now been completed with both Caldecott teams having done quite well. Our ‘B’ team, captained by Peter Stanley, were placed second in the league after Caister ‘A’, well done to all of Peter’s team. called the Millennium Cup. This involves the same teams on a knockout basis. Having progressed from the first round Caldecott ‘A’ went on to triumph over both teams from Rookery Park in the semi final and final, winning the cup after an exciting match that was decided on the 18th green following victory by the our last pairing of Sam Beer and Martin Cooper. Throughout the season I have noted that Rookery have produced strong sides so this was a particularly good result. Congratulations to all, the full team on the day consisted of myself, Terry Allard, Bob Adams, David Juler, Peter Aldred, David Cooper, Alan and Ralph Read and of course Sam and Martin who I have already mentioned. This is a team competition so I also thank those players from Caldecott ‘A’ who whilst they helped us reach the final, realised that a team selection had to be made and sadly not all could take part. My thanks to all of those who took part in the Thursday league in general this year and if you have a chance next year do get involved, everyone enjoys it. Please keep watching the notices for upcoming events. I felt compelled to rearrange the Gentleman’s Club Championship when the field of entrants numbered less than ten. I believe the new date of 21st September will encourage a larger entry and this also coincides with the Ladies Club Championship. Please see the entry posters around the club and don’t forget the open competition that comes up on 13th October, this is a team event and promises to be a great day and really needs your support. Take care out there and enjoy the latter part of the season. Phil Calver Club Captain John Plane winner of the golfing weekend for two at Stoke by Nayland Golf Course Pictured with Club Captain Phil Calver Ladies and Senior Captains’ Report overleaf Lady Captain We are nearly two thirds of the way through the golfing calendar and I hope that you have enjoyed the wonderful weather that we have been having. The Ladies League matches have been concluded and there was a nail biting finish with everything counting on the last match of the season against Swaffham, unfortunately we lost this match and as a result we will be going down next year. I would just like to say a big thankyou to Denise and all the ladies who participated in the games and hopefully we will come roaring back next year. On a more positive note, Debbie Jary and myself have found out that we have qualified for the Plate Final of the National Ladies Ping FBBB competition which will be taking place on the Gainsborough Course in Lincolnshire on the 16th September. This is the first time that the Ladies section have entered this competition and to have qualified in the top 132 pairs throughout England must be good for Caldecott Hall Golf Club. We have some friendly matches coming up in September and October so please check the Ladies notice boards in both the pro-shop and the club house. There is also a Caldecott Open Texas Scramble which is in October so please try and enter a team and support you Golf Club. One of our new lady members deserves a mention due to the huge decrease in her handicap. Debbie Matthewson only joined the club this year and has already played in lots of Ladies qualifying competitions with the result that her h/c has been decreased from 36 to 26, quite an achievement Debbie, congratulations from everyone. We have also seen several new members joining the Ladies Section in the past few months which is excellent news. There are now only a few more Ladies Silverware Competions left for this year so please check the notice boards for information. Happy Golfing We have enjoyed recent matches against Costessey Park, Royal Cromer, Wensum Valley and Great Yarmouth & Caister with three good wins and a draw. The Beccles fixture will now be held at Caldecott on 13th September and the re-arranged match at Dereham will be on October 7th. Monday 9th September sees our first entry in the Hodds Salver for the first time in three seasons and we hope our team can overcome Richmond Park and progress to the second round with another home fixture. The re-arranged Senior Captains Day was played in the best of weather this time, with a very good entry. At the time of writing the final results were not to hand as several cards needed to be checked with a number of players returning the same points score. At the prize presentation at the conclusion of the event, the Senior Captain presented Dave Cooper with the cup for the Senior Singles Championship he won this year making it two years in a row - well done Dave. Peter Stanley Senior Captain Eileen Banham Lady Captain Senior Captain The Senior Captains’ Day on the 2nd of August turned out to be a ‘thundering’ good day but finished in a ‘lightning’ way! The weather got the better of the event and one or two entrants were disappointed as they were having particularly good rounds! The Captain’s Festival on the 4th August saw a good number of our Senior members enjoy an excellent event and a good turnout in general. I’m sure our Captains’ were well pleased with their day. The winner of the Hall of Fame, Frank Scales, enjoyed his day in regional finals played on what Frank described as an excellent course and played in a good spirit but unfortunately Frank could not progress further!
