Tactical Katana
This catalog supplement provides a quick introduction to some of our new products for 2011
– more new items are on the way and we’ll play
catch up in our new full line catalog due out
shortly.
Included in the supplement are sixteen new
swords and daggers, including Medieval European,
Japanese and Chinese models. Our Rock Creek
knife line is also well represented, with new
Sambar stag-handled forged fixed-blades and new
folders featuring stabilized leather handles.
Tactical Katana
Hot on the heels of our incredibly popular Tactical Wak, the
Tactical Katana has all of the same features and more! The Kat
features a full-tang blade in 5160 high-carbon spring steel,
plasma-coated for corrosion protection, and a checkered Kraton handle for a positive grip. The guard and the handle feature lanyard holes which, with the included ParaCord, provide a number of carrying options. The fiberglass scabbard
construction eliminates water absorption and adds less than 10
ounces to the weight of the sword. With the accent on light
and quick, one-handed operation is the norm but two-handed
slashing power is available when needed.
As always, we have made great efforts to maintain
the quality standards for which CAS Hanwei is
known.

Saxon
9th Century Saxon
CAS Hanwei’s smiths have outdone themselves with their recreation of a
9th Century Saxon sword by replicating a technique used by the Saxons
and Vikings and producing a stunning blade that features a pattern-welded
core with high-carbon edge sections. This technique was used by
the old-time smiths as a means of producing blades (just for the
rich folks) that were sharp, resilient and decorative and, eleven
hundred years on, CAS Hanwei has made them affordable.
The sword’s design is based on a 9th Century piece
found in the bank of a stream in England in 1976 and
now on display in the Yorkshire Museum.

Cawood Sword
The celebrated Cawood Sword, named after its discovery location near
Cawood Castle in England, is regarded as one of the finest and best-preserved examples of an 11th century Viking sword in existence. Preserved
in the mud of the bed of the River Ouse for almost a millenium, the sword
has now found a permanent home in the Yorkshire Museum, where it is
a leading attraction. What is almost certainly a “sister” sword was unearthed in Norway in 1888, giving a valuable clue to the Cawood Sword’s
origin.
Hanwei’s version of the sword replicates the lobated pommel and steeplydowncurved quillons of the hilt perfectly, while the wide-fullered blade is
reproduced in 5160 high-carbon steel. The weight and balance provide for
a very usable sword. No details of the original scabbard are known, but
the styling of Hanwei’s leather-covered version is typical of the period.

Medieval
Rhinelander and Crecy
Our Rhinelander Bastard sword, typical of late 15th century central European cut-andthrust swords, is a handsome piece that will be appreciated by both collectors and cutting
enthusiasts. The ring-guard hilt and scent-stopper pommel balance a riveted-tang fullered
blade, forged in 5160 high-carbon steel and hardened to 54HRc for an optimal combination
of edge-holding and resilience. A leather-wrapped scabbard is included.
Our Crecy single-hand sword, celebrating the first major battle, in 1346, of the hundred years war between England and France, is styled after an early 14th century
original. The riveted-tang blade, forged in 5160 high-carbon steel, features a prominent
central ridge that provides the necessary stiffness for forceful thrusts, while the stylish
hilt features slightly down-turned
quillons and a cord-wrapped grip. The handsome scabbard, finished in
chestnut leather, is a fitting complement
to the sword.

Broadsword Belt
4
Our new sword belt is styled after 13th century examples and is capable
of handling most medieval-style single-hand and hand-and-a-half swords.
Unlike most of the originals, which were usually dedicated to a particular sword, our belt has fully adjustable belt loops to accommodate a wide
variety of scabbards. Both right- and left-handed versions are available.
Crafted in heavy top-grain leather and sized to adjust to most waist sizes,
these belts will provide many years of hard use.
Broadsword Belt Right Hand
OH2451
MSRP: $99
Broadsword Belt Left Hand (not shown)
OH2452
MSRP: $99
Introduced in response to many requests, our Rondel Dagger is typical of the widely-used sidearm of
the late middle ages. Carried by a wide section of
the populace, from tradesmen to fully-armoured
knights, the Rondel enjoyed a long service life.
Our version is both attractive and functional. The
stiff T-section blade is edged and crafted in 5160
high-carbon steel, with a hardwood handle. All
fittings, including the octagonal guard and pommel, are in steel and the leather-covered wooden
sheath complements the dagger perfectly. The
Rondel will appeal to collectors and living history
participants alike.
Medieval
Practical Langmesser
Sparring with the Langmesser has been popular in Europe for some time
and our introduction of the Practical Langmesser will give our sparring
fraternity the chance to enjoy this uniquely German weapon. Characterized by its full-tang construction, with riveted hardwood handle slabs,
distictive “nagel” or knuckle-guard and hooked pommel, the Langmesser
was a formidable weapon in skilled hands.

Baselard Dagger
The Baselard, in both its shortsword and dagger forms, was
a uniquely Swiss weapon as its name suggests. Characterized
by its crescent-shaped guard and pommel, the Baselard was
long-lived, first appearing in the 13th century and surviving
into the 17th century.
Our version has a full-tang blade in 5160 high-carbon steel, with a
distal taper and double fullers providing excellent balance. The grip
and elongated pommel combine to enable the sword to be used in
either a single- or two-handed mode. The 2mm. edge and the
rounded tip also make this sword re-enactment legal and, together with the classic leather-covered scabbard, it provides
a distinctive option for the foot soldier.

Our Baselard Dagger is based on an early 15th century piece
and features a single-edged diamond-section blade in 5160
high-carbon steel with a riveted tang. The distinctive hardwood grip is capped with engraved steel guard and pommel plates, and an attractive leather-covered scabbard with a
belt-retention ring completes the presentation.

Yasukuni Gunto
These swords replicate the Gunto of high-ranking Japanese army officers
of the Pre-WWII and WWII era. They were made from 1933 onwards
by a group of highly-skilled swordsmiths at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo
and are known collectively as the Yasukuni swords. Only 8000 of these
swords were made and many were destroyed, so in recent years they have
become highly collectable. Available in both Colonel (SH2445) and Captain (SH2444) rank coloration, Hanwei is producing these very accurate
replicas for collectors unable to afford or obtain originals.

Military Dadao
Jie Dao
The Jie Dao is traditionally used by Shaolin monks not as a
weapon (which is forbidden) but as a multipurpose tool. The
“Jie” in Jie Dao means “abstain”, and Jie Dao translates as “the
sword of abstention from killing”. This explains the deliberate
lack of a sharp point and ascribes spiritual as well as functional
value.
The Shaolin Jie Dao is elegantly simple in its construction,
with a forged blade in high-carbon steel that is blunt-ended,
emphasizing its non-threatening nature. The blade is complemented by a bamboo handle and scabbard with traditional
steel fittings. Our officially licensed Jie Dao are available in
two sizes, each having its own unique features and uses in
Shaolin tradition.
This sword replicates a Dadao used by the Chinese
military during the Japanese invasion of China in the
pre-WWII era and celebrates a Chinese victory at the
battle of the Great Wall, in which the Dadao and the
Katana were actually pitted against each other. The
leather handle wrap is representative of the many different wrapping materials originally used by the poorlyequipped army - many of the handles were simply wrapped with strips of clothing fabric,
knotted in place. A leather scabbard is included for safety, though the originals
had none. The sword
is ruggedly built to
handle heavy-duty
cutting.
