CRYSTAL CAVES
Mountain Province
Cordillera Administrative Region
Looking for real caving adventure?
If the prospect of going down to as
deep as 163 meters sounds
thrilling to you then the trio of
Sumaging-Latipan-Lomyang
crystal caves is the perfect
destination for you.
Located in Mountain Province, the
crystal caves across Sumaging,
Lapitan, and Lomyang hold the
distinction of being the deepest
cave in the country. Historically,
the cave also served as hiding
place of Filipino soldiers and
Guerillas during World War II.
Prior to the War, this was also a
dwelling of and eventually became
burial grounds for the Indigenous
People of the Cordillera.
You can access this splendid
nature’s gift by coming through
one of the six entrances that lead
to an intricate mix of active and
fossil cave, prominent for its large
passages
and
extraordinary
gourds.
You can feast your eyes on the
mystical scenery and rocky
terrain
accentuated
by
the
temperate and cool climate of the
Philippine tropics.
The
trio
Sumaging-LatipanLomyang crystal caves are also
prominent for being the fifth
longest in the country.

SUMAGING CAVE
Mountain Province
Cordillera Administrative Region
If there is one positive
thing that results from
water erosion, then it
should be the creation of
Sumaging Cave.
Commonly known as the
Big Cave, its sheer size
and enormous chambers
never fail to surprise
visitors.
So huge is the “Big Cave”
that it has earned a lot of
monikers
from
local
folks, whose forefathers used the cave as hiding places during the World
War II.
An array of fascinating rock formations surround the cave, including the
“King’s Curtain”, “Rice Granny”, “Cauliflower”, and “Dancing Hall”.
There is also magnificent and unorthodox display of stalactites and
stalagmites making the trip inside worthwhile and satisfying.
Passing through a particular part of Sumaging known as “The Tunnel” is
the highlight of every visit. For one, the explorer needs to exert extra
effort to pass through this minute passage. The opening is so small that a
visitor is required to make limbo-like movements to ease through the tight
tunnel-like passage.
Visitors reaching this point will be greeted by a marker that reads “c-r-aw-l-i-n-g.”

CRYSTAL CAVE
Baguio City - Cordillera Administrative Region
The Crystal Cave got its name from
the crystals that once peppered its
insides.
But gone are the days when you
could see them gleaming and
sparkling from the huge walls.
It was said that the crystals were dug
up and sold by the locals as they try
to survive the economic crisis that
struck the nation in the 1980s.
Despite the loss of these precious
crystals, Crystal Cave found in the
Summer Capital of the Philippines,
Baguio City, remains as one of the
most visited spots in the city.
The walls of the cave are massive and
the ceiling is high, thus allowing a
large number of people to roam
around all at the same time.
Marvelous rock formations fill the
inside of the cave and you could also
see the small crevices from where the
crystals were taken out.

If you want to sail through
an underground river while
exploring the secrets of a
mystical cave, then the
Cacupangan Cave in Mabini,
Pangasinan is the right spot
for you.
This
cave
is
situated
approximately
five
kilometers from the highway
thru the cemetery road in
Mabini, a 25,000-hectare
land, laced by dense forestry.
The underground river, which is as cold and clear as the waters of
Boracay – the country’s top tourist destination - flows right into the
Balincaguing river.
Local folks recommend tourists to visit the place during the dry season,
the best time the cave exudes its true beauty.

Cave
in
Brgy.
Colayao, Bani, Pangasinan
could be named as the
longest cave in the country
once its development and
exploration finish in 2009.
Initial reports coming from a
surveying team shows that
the straight-line distance
between the main entrance
and the sinkhole entrance is
about 425 meters.
The initial inspection also revealed that numerous side rooms and
possible branches abound here.
This cave consisting of stalactites, columns and draperies is intact. It is
rich in guano since it is home to a large number of bats.

ENCHANTED CAVE
Pangasinan - Region 1 – Ilocos Region
If you are looking for a cave where you could find solitude and peace in
one wrap, a visit to the Enchanted Cave in Bolinao, Pangasinan won’t be
waste of time.
One of the many interesting caves found in this northern part of the
country, Enchanted Cave is a great place to unwind and relax because of
its unmatched tranquility, as well as the cool, fresh and clean water that
you can enjoy and play with.
Although the cave, because of its enormous size has several areas to
explore,
certain
parts
are
still
restricted to public. Visitors should
take some safety measures when
inside the cave.
Do not enter the restricted areas,
especially those marked by ropes since
most of these hazard areas have a 10
to 20 feet drop. Beware of the sharp
rocks, as well.
A headlamp is not necessary while
exploring this cave since the area has
adequate lighting.

CALLAO CAVES
Cagayan - Region 2 – Cagayan Valley
Once used as a camp by Japanese Occupational Forces during World War
II, these astonishing Callao caves are located about 20 to 30 minutes ride
from Tuguegarao City.
One of the most popular tourist attraction in Cagayan Valley, it is situated
within the Peñablanca Protected Landscape in Cagayan.
These caves have seven chambers which offer visitors a good view of the
massive limestone and other rock formations that run through a great
length of the Pinacanauan River. The stalactites and stalagmites in the
deeper chambers will also leave every tourist in awe.
Lighting won’t be a big deal when visiting the caves as the supposed dark
areas are illuminated by the light passing through the natural crevices
found in every chamber. A very significant accentuation among the seven
chambers is the presence of a stone altar illuminated by natural skylight,
producing an eerie catacomb-like atmosphere.
Also a treat is the spectacle of red-billed kalaw birds and daily charge of
bats at dusk when millions pour out of the Bat’s Cave.

JACKPOT CAVE
Cagayan - Region 2 – Cagayan Valley
Do you want to feel lucky?
Then take a tour inside this pristine cave called the Jackpot Cave.
Situated at Sitio Tumallo, Barangay Quibal, Peñablanca, this cave is the
second deepest cave in the Philippines, next to the trio of SumagingLatipan-Lumiang crystal caves.
With an impressive depth of 115 meters, you can encounter walking size
passages, shafts and drops of varying depths that can provide wide
varieties of rope work. Meandering streams and pools of different sizes
can be found inside the cave that you can play in. The trio of SumagingLatipan-Lumiang crystal caves is 163 meters deep.
Before you reach this wonderful piece of nature, you can first quench your
thirst for hiking adventures with a 560-meter trek to the base of the
mountain before challenging a climb with an elevation of 100 meters.
There are two cave openings leading you to both the eastern part and west
side of the cave. But most visitors take the west entrance because they
can culminate their caving experience with a view of Pagbilao town proper.

ODESSA TUMBALI CAVE
Cagayan - Region 2 – Cagayan Valley
If there is a perfect
cave system that
can provide good
sport caving in the
Philippines, it has
to be the Odessa
Tumbali Cave.
Located at Sitio
Abbenditan,
Barangay Quibal,
Peñablanca, local
people also call
this
“Abbenditan
Cave."
Regarded as the third longest cave in the country, it stretches to as long
as 12.6 kilometers, and has five known entrances with potential length
that could exceed 15 kilometers.
Expect a jaw-dropping experience when you come close to the fantastic
formations and passage that you could play guessing games with. Added
to that are the multiple canals and lakes surrounding the cave which are
excellent for water activities.
Cave diving opportunities abound here as this site is active, flood prone
and an excellent venue for wet sport caving.

SAN CARLOS CAVE
Cagayan - Region 2 – Cagayan Valley
Excellent swimmers would
love this pride of Cagayan,
the San Carlos Cave.
For one, half of the cave is
covered by subterranean
water
so
a
lot
of
swimming is required to
explore this masterpiece
of nature.
It offers challenging but
refreshing escapades to
enthusiasts who are bored
with
the
usual
experiences that other
caves offer. Probably one
of the toughest caves in the Philippines, San Carlos offers a lot of
adventures that will test a cave explorer's robustness and skills.
Mastering the art of crawling will be part of the game. Spelunkers will
have to crawl through the cave while they try to feast their eyes on the
clusters of white stalagmites, some of which resemble scooped ice cream.
But remember: when you notice these scoops of ice scream, you’re already
in the “Ice Cream Parlor” section of the cave.
Beside this cave is
“John
the
Baptist”
chamber which is is
also up for exploration.
But untrue to its name,
the
chamber
posts
some danger. John the
Baptist is a very deep
underwater
sump
where one should take
a deep, deep breath in
order to swim to the
other side.
Also, be aware of some
sharp
and
rough
stones
that
could
scratch skins and tear
clothing.

BIAK-NA-BATO CAVE
Bulacan
Region 3 – Central Luzon
Of all the caves in the Philippines, perhaps one of the more famous is the
Biak-na-Bato cave in Bulacan.
For one, Biak-na-Bato is a historical site that has been witness to the
ever-changing political landscape of the Philippines. It is the same spot
where the Biak-na-Bato Republic was established.
This monstrous boulder that was split by unknown reason served as the
mountain hideout of the revolutionary forces during the Spanish regime.
This same boulder is also where Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo and Pedro Paterno
signed the Malolos Constitution.
But beyond its historical essence are the majestic and marvelous features
that never fail to satisfy visitors coming from different places.
It offers a lot scintillating rock formation. Hanging bridges and staircases
connecting rivers and caves are also a must-see in this area.

SIBATIYA CAVE
Quezon
Region 4A – CALABARZON
Site/Facility Profile
Known by local folks as “Bayawak,” Sibatiya Cave rests on a mountain
known as “Halimaw.”
Though the cave’s local name and location sound creepy, this place is
none of the horrible things you could imagine.
In fact, a visit on this piece of land situated at the center of the Pagbilao
Grande Island, Pagbilao, Quezon, will give you an exhausting yet thrilling
and wonderful adventure.
One of about 75 caves resting in this area, Sibatiya got its name from the
basins of water which used to be seen before it has been explored and
exploited for bat shit (guano), which is now used by many as a natural
fertilizer.
The cave is 320 meters deep, thus extra care is needed for visitors. So
deep is the cave that the length of four rolls of electric wire has been used
to illuminate its passages using generators.
It has two mouths, the east and west mouths. The east mouth offers a
marvelous view of the Pagbilao town proper and Mount Banahaw but the
lush vegetation prevents an unobstructed snap.
On the other side, a splendid view of the Pagbilao Chico Island with the
famous “Tulay Buhangin” will greet tourists. The west mouth is manmade, excavated for the convenience of the guano "boys."
Despite the obvious exploitation of people, the crystalline stalactites and
stalagmites still never fail to amuse tourists. You can look for those
monstrous stalactite-stalagmite columns and take a fascinating souvenir
to keep for yourself.
Other stunning odd-shaped limestone formations could also be chanced
upon once inside this enthralling place. Basically, what was left from the
disappearance of the cave floors was a ravine that gives a breathtaking
view of the rock formations, including the famous Quipot bridge.
A visit to the Sibatiya Cave can be summarized to a combination of
exhaustion, excitement, thrill and awe all rolled into one.

SUNGAWAN CAVE
Quezon
Region 4A – CALABARZON
“Sungawan” is a tagalog word that literally means windows.
Based on its name alone, you can actually picture the cave’s image in
your mind. Yes, this cave indeed has many holes serving as its multiple
windows.
Standing proud at Pagbilao, Quezon, this cave is usually visited by people
during the Lenten Season and sometimes serves as a picnic spot. An
uncrowded leisure spot, many pick this place to relax and unwind as the
water here provides a cold and refreshing ambiance.
You can access the cave by following the barangay road, which others
refer to as the “Feeder Road”. From the Barangay Hall of Brgy. Bigo, it will
take you 2.8 kilometers to reach the entrance of the cave.
Some people go to the cave by foot, but others by bike. Along the way,
you may view the Bangkatan River, whose water comes from the
Sungawan Cave itself.
The Bangkatan River becomes the Tambak River farther downstream and
wind its way around the eastern and southern outskirts of the Pagbilao
town proper.

PALAWAN UNDERGROUND RIVER
OR ST. PAUL SUBTERRANEAN RIVER
Palawan
Region 4B – MIMAROPA
Explore Palawan Underground River or St. Paul Subterranean River.
This natural haven is not easy to reach as one needs to spend a couple of
hours, transferring from one boat to another. But at the end of the
journey, one can heave a sigh of relief and say it’s worth the grind.
The long boat ride will
actually serve as an
appetizer as you pass
through limestone cliffs
before
reaching
the
underground
river’s
entrance. This may not
be
the
longest
underground river in
the world anymore, but
Filipinos should still be
proud of this natural
wonder because it is
still
the
longest
navigable underground
river.
St. Paul Subterranean
stretches up to 15
kilometers (5 miles), and has been declared a UNESCO Heritage site. It is
as huge as 4000-acre and is the 3rd deepest cave in the country.
There’s a mini rainforest that leads towards to the river, and it is
“guarded” by monitor lizards and swinging monkeys. A Dangkalan tree
stood mightily at the entrance of the cave, appearing like a guard that
stands to protect the cave from any intruder.
The enormous cave houses some of the most magnificent stalactite and
stalagmite formations one could ever see.
Multitude of fruits and vegetables are beautifully represented by cave
formations of different shapes and sizes. There’s also a part of the cave
that looks like an atrium with great heights and a cave formation
resembling the “Holy Family,” thus earning the moniker Cathedral.
While enjoying the beauty of the cave, one should not forget to protect
oneself from the huge numbers of bats hovering above, which might take
pleasure in dropping some of their precious wastes on your head.

TABON CAVE
Palawan
Region 4B – MIMAROPA
Be part of history. Explore Tabon Cave.
A cave known as the Philippines' Cradle of Civilization for the discovery
within its confines archeological artifacts that contributes to the history
and heritage of the Philippines, like fossil human bones that date back
22,000 to 24,000 years ago.
A string of caves
make
up
the
famous
Tabon
Cave,
which
is
nestled in Quezon,
the southern part
of
Palawan.
It
consists
of
200
caves but only 29
were fully explored.
These are currently
being
maintained
and managed by
the
National
Museum.
The Tabon Cave
Complex has magnificent array of stalactites and stalagmites formed by
years of dripping waters from the dome of the caves.
These caves got their name from the skull cap remains of the “Tabon
Man” which had been discovered here. The Tabon Man is about 22,000
years old.
Along with the
skull cap, remains
of wild boar and
deer were also
found here, thus
confirming earlier
theories that men
were
already
capable of hunting
animals for food
way back the old,
old days.

INDAY NELLY MYSTICAL CAVE
Rizal
Region 4A – CALABARZON
At the back side of
Antipolo Church is a
mystical cave, known as
Inday Nelly Mystical Cave.
This interesting huge cave
is managed and taken care
of by Inday Nelly. It was
said that Inday Nelly
bought this large parcel of
land back in 1970 where
the cave is located.
She reportedly said that
she bought this piece of land in Barangay San Jose, Antipolo, Rizal, to
fulfill a mission coming from a prophetic dream from her childhood.
This might not be the usual destination that spelunkers would expect, but
it still attracts a lot of tourists. The cave is already developed for a good
field trip destination.
Steps have been constructed at the cave entrance as the cave floor has
also been leveled with earth, and an electric lighting has been set into the
cave for tourists to fully appreciate the interior.
The cave has a prominent religious influence. The formations seen inside
the cave not only give visitors a visual pleasure for their shapes but were
believed to have healing powers, as well. They depict a lot of religious
figures, thus attracting a lot of pilgrims like Mt. Banahaw does.

DAGOHOY CAVE
Bohol
Region 7 – Central Visayas
Dagohoy cave is
named
after
Francisco
Dagohoy,
a
patriot,
who
started
a
rebellion against
the
Spanish
regime
and
founded
a
movement
against them that
lasted until 1829.
It
could
be
inferred
from
these facts that
this
cave
has
played an important role in the Philippine history. This cave served as the
headquarters of Dagohoy’s movement during the uprising.
Located at the town of Danao, it is the most visited cave by local and
foreign tourists. One of its passages has an underwater route that leads to
a dry land. It is believed that this is the hiding place of the movement
when Spanish forces raid the cave.
Set in the middle of the huge and astonishing expanse of mountain
ranges in the municipality of Danao, Dagohoy cave is a five-kilometer
walk from Barangay Magtanghoy.
The doorway to the cave is a 17-meter drop to a labyrinth. Passages of the
cave are studded with crystals with a stream winding through it. An
underwater path leads to dry ground and the stream eventually flows out
towards the Wahig River which is 100 meters away.
Stalactites and stalagmites make the interior of this cave a stunning sight
to behold. A golden hue predominates when the walls are studded with
lighted lanterns or flashlights. Crystals seem to make the wall sparkle.

Panglao Island in Bohol is not only
home to numerous high-end resorts but
to the marvelous Hinagdanan Cave, as
well.
Stalactites and stalagmites converge
towards each other and are the main
feature of this cave. The cave has, on its
inside, a pond which has a depth of ten
feet. But it is not advisable to swim in
this pond since it is not clean.
The cavern is lighted naturally from
sunlight seeping through the holes in
the ceiling of the cave. It is accentuated
by the presence of a deep lagoon and
multiple
large
stalactites
and
stalagmites. The cave is also prominent
for its underground lake.

BUENAVISTA CAVES
Surigao del Norte
Region 13 – CARAGA
A six-kilometer travel from the
city will lead you to this
dripstone cave at Hikdop Island,
Barangay Buenavista.
Surigao del Norte is known for
its mountainous areas, flat and
rolling
lands,
but
this
topography is accentuated by
the presence of this natural
wonder
known
as
the
Buenavista Cave.
One of the most famous rock
formations in the cave is the one resembling a huge group of people. That
rock formation is nicknamed the "King’s court.”
An underground pool about knee-deep is found some 100 meters from the
main entry point. You could reach the cave, which has three entry points,
via a 45-minute ride by a pump boat from the capital city.

SILOP CAVE
Surigao del Norte
Region 13 – CARAGA
Four caves with 12 different entry points
constitute the Silop cave system.
The different entryways lead to one big
chamber with stunning limestone formations,
stalagmites and stalactites. Some of the
stalactites
and
stalagmites
are
so
magnificently formed that they tend to create
marvelous columns.
A 15-minute ride from the city proper will
bring you to the jungle path towards the cave.
But expect a slippery and muddy travel to the
cave. Stepping on slippery woods, limestone
and sharp rocks is also a peril. Once a visitor
takes notice of the limestone, he should be
aware he’s nearing the destination.
