October 2014 - Allied Arts Council
First Saturdays bring life to Downtown
In 2012, Amy Heath and Brian
Myers, co-owners of The Lucky
Tiger vintage clothing and record
store, were tired of downtown being
a ghost town during the weekend,
so they decided to bring bands and
artists to their store creating a mini
community, like Kansas City’s First
Fridays.
When
Beau Walker, Drew
Williams and Brett Ryan opened
Paradox Theatre in the winter of
2013, they approached Brian and
Amy about making their event a
downtown wide event, thus creating
First Saturdays.
Since then, many downtown
businesses such as Goode Food
Delivered/International
Trucking
Service Gallery, Glass Eye Gallery,
Tobiason Studio, Edmond Street
Parlor, Ground Round, Clarity: Yoga
& Wellness, A to Z Natural Market,
Café Pony Espresso, Foster’s Martini
Bar, and Bliss Salon have also joined.
“Our business has been located
in the downtown area since 1992.
Being born and raised in St. Joseph,
downtown was a big part of our youth
and it just seemed right to have
our business here. By participating
in downtown First Saturdays we
are investing in the future of all the
businesses within Tobiason Studio
and downtown,” said Terri Rader,
co-owner of Tobiason Studios.
If you are unfamiliar with First
Saturdays, it is all about community
collaboration. Typically, businesses
in downtowns or art districts have
free events open to the public
throughout the day or evening to
help drive customers to the area.
In
St.
Joseph
participating
businesses specifically hold events
on the first Saturday of the month
that fit the theme of their business.
One of Amy’s favorite events so far
was in February 2014, “We had a
deface a record cover for charity
and chili cook-off. It was a blast and
everyone had a fantastic time.” Amy
also loves that they have been able
to have fantastic bands over the
last few years including Scruffy and
the Janitors, Missouri Homegrown,
Dsoedean, Under Big Oak Tree, and
Dream Girl. “Really, the band list is
long and bands really seem to like to
play here. It does sound
fantastic in here, perhaps
from the clothes,” said
Amy.
In September Paradox
Theatre in conjunction
with Make 12 Church
created
a
Postsecret
community art project.
The project acted like the
website Postsecret where
anyone could submit a
postcard with a secret they
might not have shared with anyone.
“Who doesn’t have a secret they’d
like to anonymously confess? Even
that act alone brings us together,”
said Brett Ryan with Paradox
Theatre. The submitted anonymous
postcards were on display starting
on the First Saturday in September
continuing through the month.
Amy has great plans for the future.
“I would love to host a funky formal

About the Allied Arts Council
The Council provides educational programs, art exhibits,
and summer youth arts programs, as well as operating the
annual Trails West!® arts festival.
The Allied Arts Council of St. Joseph, Missouri exists
“to bring arts and people together.” Founded in 1963, the
Council is one of the oldest in the State of Missouri and is
acknowledged statewide as an arts leader. In 1990, the
City of St. Joseph designated the Allied Arts Council as
the City’s official community arts agency. Operating with
a staff of four and a volunteer base approaching 2,000,
the Council takes the lead in our community in organizing,
fund-raising, advocating, educating, and servicing the
local arts community.

Queen of the River Town, King of the Trails
Have you seen the new mural in downtown St. Joseph? In just two short
August weeks, commissioned artist Sam Welty, from Virginia Beach,
completed the “Queen of the River Town, King of the Trails.” The mural spans
six buildings between 5th and 6th streets on the north side of Edmond.
The mural theme, chosen by a committee, depicts western migration which
is vital to the history of the St. Joseph community.
The mural was commissioned by the St. Joseph Downtown Partnership and
funded in part by the Downtown Community Improvement District.

Trails West!® 2014- "live, breathe, create"
Trails West!® 2014 is officially
in the books, thanks to a great
steering committee, hundreds
of volunteers, and thousands of
festival patrons.
This was an exciting year in the
fine art and folk art areas, as
we had more artists and crafters
than ever, even adding an arts
incubator. There was also a lot of
buzz throughout the weekend in
the fine arts area with this year’s
Artist in Action project. Site
Enhancement chair Jeff Waggoner
and Fine Arts Chair Robbie Morton
were able to get several hundred
festival patrons involved with making
this year’s piece. Patrons signed
their name or a little message on
shingles, which were then all wired
together from a cascading hoop to
create one giant art piece. Check
out photos of the piece on the Trails
West!® facebook page.
Sunday morning the festival added

10:30-2. This venture truly paid
off, as youth groups, churches, and
families lined up almost 2 hours
before the gates opened to get the
perfect spot for Big Daddy Weave
and the community church service.
The office joke is that Trails West!®
is the festival that never rests, and
in reality… it never does. We hope
you join us for next year’s Trails

are already thinking about it.

Dear Arts PatronsFour years ago when I started at
the Allied Arts Council, I was fairly
confident I understood all that the
Council did. Here I am 4 years
later, and I still am amazed at the
programs that we are able to do.
Not growing up in St. Joe I
remember visiting friends who did
live here, who seemed to always
wear their Artscape shirts. I wanted
so badly to have one of those
colorful t-shirts, and to be
able to paint, or do whatever
project they were doing half
as well! Here we are going
into our 28th year of Artscape,
with more students than ever
wearing those brightly colored
shirts!
Since I started working here I
have been able to see a program
go from the dream stage to a
reality, the St. Joseph Sculpture
Walk. My drive into downtown has
been one of my favorite parts of
coming to work this fall, all because
of the Sculpture Walk. It is great
to see a family with their children,
or sometimes-even 3 generations,
strolling through downtown touring
the Sculpture Walk. As I pass by
it is really neat to hear everyone
interacting and sharing stories with
their opinions on the pieces.
The Council has a long list of
programs that we provide for our
community, such as Artists in the
Schools, Artscape, Trails West!®,
and the St. Joseph Sculpture
Walk. These opportunities that
bring families and friends together,
educate our children, and bring
