ESTONIA - A TRAVEL LOG WITH A
HAPPY, SPECIAL OFFER ENDING
Estonia, one of the newest European Union
for 12 years before going back to Singapore and
applying to become Estonia's honorary consul in
Singapore.
The most famous landmark in the city is St. Olav's
church. It was the tallest building in the world in the
16th and 17th centuries, with its steeple reaching
(EU) members and a place that 95 percent of our
readers, I bet, know little or nothing about. So dear
readers, EW is going to give you some basic travel
log info to get you up to snuff and then we are going
to hit you with the biggest deal of the century to get
you an EU second passport through the graciousness
of Estonia's forward looking government. This is one
not to be missed.
OK let me get on with the travel log: Tallin, is the
essence of Estonia. The capital of Estonia is a former
Soviet-occupied city having a population of 412,950
living in an area a quarter the size of Singapore, It is
filled with mediaeval buildings, iconic church
steeples and quaint parks, as well as cafes, restaurants
and lounges waiting to be discovered within its
numerous nooks and crannies. "Estonia may be a
cold country but the people have warm hearts which
make visitors feel very welcome and comfortable. It

Mr Aswani, who is also the honorary consul of maritime traders to spot Tallinn far out at sea.

down a few times too. During the Soviet occupation,
it was also used as a radio surveillance point.

autumn, it is about 10 to 15 deg C.
Despite the beauty of the different season one
should not visit during October and November which
are generally not very favourable due to the rain from
the autumn storms.
Mr Aswani advised EW that the one item you
must bring along is an Estonian phrasebook. The
Estonian language is considered to be one of the, most
beautiful in the world. Hence, the language is
cherished by Estonians and if a foreigner says a
simple "aitah" (say I-takh) for thank you or "jatku
leiba" (say yat-koo ley-ba), which means "may your
bread last" and is said before meals, many doors will
open for you.
How do you get from the fareast to Tallinn or for
that matter from the USA to Tallinn? Finnair is the
answer. (www.finnair.com) operates flights to Tallinn
via Helsinki from all parts of the world. The flight
from Singapore to Helsinki is about 11 hours and 30
minutes, while the flight time from Helsinki to Tallinn
is 30 minutes.
get it from most restaurants for €8 to €10.
Seafood has always played an important role in
Estonian cuisine and consists mainly of pike-perch
from Lake Peipus, a lake between Estonia and Russia,
marinated or smoked eel and Baltic dwarf herring.
Pork is historically the most important meat in
Estonia. Pork with rich gravy, boiled potatoes with
dill and sauerkraut is a traditional Estonian main
course.
Game such as rabbit, venison, elk (especially
smoked elk sausage), brown bear and wild boar are
also typical of what you would find on an Estonian
dining table.
One of the most popular Estonian treats is kohuke,
a small cottage cheese bar covered in chocolate.
You can find these dishes at Olde Hansa, a
mediaeval restaurant, or Mekk, a modern Estonian
restaurant which offers a fusion of traditional
Estonian and New Nordic cuisine. The price of a meal
in these restaurants is about €35 to €45.
A cool place to chill out is W i n e Library in Old
Town because it has a selection of at least
250 wines from countries such as France, Italy and
Spain and a wide array of food including beef
carpaccio and grilled pork filet with baked potatoes.

ESTONIA NOW
Sometimes you think you've done a good job
promoting something very worthwhile and then you
find out you've not done such a good job.
Expat World's publisher said about it: "This is the
best deal he has seen for an EU residency in his 25
years of publishing."
A lot of readers have a feeling of dissatisfaction
and they want to "do something;" they are ready to
act. But here are some sobering statistics that show
how "not alone" you are:
Per Gramps and Bob Bauman of International
Living, 6 million Americans will leave this year. The
wealthy and productive. New émigrés will take their
place but many million fewer. This are uniformly
poorer although there are China families of wealth
that want to come to Estonia. And many land in
Vancouver, B.C. rather than the U.S.
In 2001 the U.S. State Department reported 6
renunciations of citizenship for the year. Now
renunciations have grown to 6 a minute and the State
Department is charging for the privilege of saying
"No thanks."
And there are citizens from other countries that
would have considered the U.S. and now are
"jumping over it" and landing in what would have
been for them a second tier choice a few years ago.
Is the U.S. finished and, say, Italy, roaring with
prosperity? Obviously the answer is no to both. The
U.S. may be the last man standing as a cascade of
countries bite the dust from bad governance. To
many, the U.S. doesn't deserve the accolade, but that
doesn't make it not true. The question is how nasty
is it going to get as the beast struggles to survive with
less food - and the only food it does get comes from
you or is you.
The "Six Flags" theory of survival and prosperity
don't need to discuss whether a country is right or
wrong or evil or good. It does suggest that folks who
embrace its philosophy are more fluid than the many.
And change hotels, so to speak, when service
declines or the price goes up too far too fast.
For the squeamish, this is a 100% front door
program. It is based on your present citizenship.
Some folks don't want that, but for those who do, it
doesn't get better than this.
The "Estonia" part in urging you to get Estonian
permanent residency right now is, frankly, irrelevant
unless you'd like to settle in a high latitude country
that is not at the saturation point in its development
curve - it is rising and it is well positioned to supply
goods and services to both the rich Nordic countries
www.ExpatWorld.net
to its west and massive Russian market to the east.
Let alone to growing Poland and consumptive
Germany. They're right down the coast from Estonia.
What Estonian permanent residency truly is a
gateway to the 27 OTHER countries that form the
European Union. Unless Estonia is your target
country, permanent residency there gives you "no
questions asked" permission to live in ANY EU
country you choose. Plus Switzerland.
Want peace and low cost? Portugal. Want solid
economy and opportunity? Germany, Austria,
Switzerland. Want sunny bargains? Spain is up for
grabs. Want Florence or Tuscany farms? There's
Italy. Want English speaking countries? Ireland and
the UK plus the Normandy and Brittany coasts of
France. Everything you've read in a travel guide is
yours for the taking. Not asking. The taking.
Just like every other developing country, as soon
as the word really gets out, the program will be
discontinued. And you will be left knowing you
could have had it and could be living somewhere in
Europe. And think about "somewhere" - you have
the right to live anywhere. Unless you want an EU
citizenship and passport, you needn't "check-in"
anyplace. You can travel totally invisibly around
Europe. You don't need your passport. No country
even knows you are there unless you want to tell
them. And even if you do "check-in" for a couple
years to pick up your EU citizenship, you can "checkout" by leaving that country.
This program is everything you used to have to
head for South America to find.
Start your application today and start rigging your
chute and start working on your portable trade or
occupation skills for you and your whole family.

WHY DO WE RECOMMEND HUSHMAIL?
Hushmail is a very private way of communicating.
It keeps nosey folks from prying into your personal

It has a number of levels of security.

There are a few cases where hushmail has honored

fine.

In my work, I need to make clear presentations of
carefully supported opinions. But all of us - including
me - need to unwind and gripe to our friends once in
a while.
As it happens, quite a few EW readers are guys
with whom I've had drinks and umm... informal conversations. And, quite a few of these conversations
took place at establishments that advertise in EW.
So, I'm going to consider EW subscribers my wider
circle of friends and rant a bit., Pull up a chair, pour
yourself a Margarita, and dive in.
I write a lot on heavy topics, so every now and
then someone calls me a philosopher. I take it as a
compliment, of course, but I always remember that
people respect philosophers for bad reasons - mostly
because they're expected to respect philosophers.
Please trust me on this - a lot of famous philosophers are not worth your respect.
Plato, for example, was an ass. Sure, he was a
smart guy and said some good things, but he was
also a wannabe tyrant and the inspiration for elitist
tyrants. He wanted to censor almost everything, with
the rulers deciding what stories could or couldn't be
told. He wanted people held within caste-like structures, with one line of forever-rulers and all other
lines forever-servants. Not my kind of guy. And, I
will add, he was a no-show when Socrates drank the
hemlock. Socrates' other students risked their safety
and showed-up, Plato said he wasn't feeling well and
stayed away.
There were, of course, good philosophers. The
early (pre-Socratic) Greeks broke a tremendous
amount of new ground, and even though hey were
sometimes mistaken, you have to appreciate guys
who figure things out for the very first time. Epictetus
had a lot of good things to say. Aristotle was a great
philosopher. He was wrong about a lot of things, but
he also discovered the right way to think about things.
Francis Bacon improved upon Aristotle and gave us
the scientific revolution, and a bunch of bullshitidentification tools. (Which are forgotten these days.)
John Locke was a great philosopher and a great man.
Thomas Jefferson deserves a place on the list. And
there have been others.
The big-name philosophers of more recent times
mostly stunk: intelligent guys, but with twisted souls
and running off the rails.
www.ExpatWorld.net
Hegel taught that the state was God in the world,
which was a wonderful justification for Hitler, Mussolini, and their ilk. Rousseau based grand ideas on
lies and treated his own family like crap. Marx
founded his ideas on the mistakes of better men than
himself, embalmed them with word tricks, and turned
the much older idea of socialism into a death machine. Kant taught academics to use word formulas
to prove that the real world can't be assumed to be
real. (If that twists your mind a bit, it's because it is
supposed to!)
I could go on, but I won't. Suffice it to say that
philosophy has become an intellectual weapon.
George Orwell got it right when he described the socialist philosophers of his day:
The secret wish of this English Russophile intelligentsia was to... usher in a hierarchical society
where the intellectual can at last get his hands on the
whip.
And that's the real purpose of this confusing, academic, philosophical crap - they want to get their
hands on the whip.
Let me make it simple for you:
Any philosopher who can't cry with the bereaved,
who can't enjoy a joke with a homeless drunk, who
can't throw a punch, who can't explain his theory to
a child.... is a poser, no matter how famous he may
be.
Don't let them intimidate you... and pour me another drink.
P.R.
Paul Rosenberg is considered by some critics to
be the new Ayn Rand -- starting with his seminal
work A Lodging of Wayfaring Men. It's setting is the
"new world" that is our world right now. You can
find his many books at www.AscoliBooks.com. Paul
speaks often at freedom fests around the world and
is one of the more thoughtful and articulate advocates
of a way of life that just "by-passes" government.

with you for something.
Flag Six Report is a regular monthly feature of Expat World that is
directed to tips and cautions about building cash flow from cyberspace.
From Storefront to Internet
At the onset, there are two ways to look at a
"storefront" - yours and someone else's. It's better if
it's someone else's and, as a would-be internet
entrepreneur, you should always keep your eyes open
for something sold in someone else's store that YOU
could sell on the internet.
This same idea works if you're already living in
paradise running a beachfront scooter rental stand.
Why a webpage? Because tourists often research
every aspect of their trip. They're happy to see you
have what they want when they get there. The right
colorful photos, the girl on the scooter with hair in
the wind, the nice looking tanned "rental agent" and
add a "free drink" coupon you've worked out with a
local food and drink vendor and someone will be
stopping YOUR place before any others. You take
reservations. You will hold a scooter for them for a
small Visa deposit. You've got $25 of their money.
They are NOT going shopping for scooter rentals
anymore when they get to town. Have it ready for
them at their hotel if they pay upfront and fax back
your liability forms? Again, you can even afford to
advertise if you go extremely small: like your local
postal code only and only on travel sites. This is the
kind of business you can build into repping for tour
guides (for a %), renting "corrected lens" scuba
masks and snorkels/fins, free scooter-tour maps,
Garmin GPS units. You get it. The bodies are there.
Sell. Got WiFi? A table and you're an internet café
without being one.
Gramps once wrote me while he was on the road
visiting Campione d'Italia (see the Campione
Confidential by Gramps coming soon to our website)
that he had found a delightful candy made in a small
shop that only sold locally but would transport fine
and had a good shelf-life. He has a decent income

WE have below a piece by Grandpa. He is very bullish on
Panama. EW thinks ALL real estate based wealth is ok LONG TERM but that
can be a long time. EW sees the comparison to Monaco but Monaco is an order
of magnitude different from Panama and gramps may be comparing apples and
oranges. Of course, with inflation coming and Panama on the USD, prices will
escalate and at least keep pace with declining dollar value. EW thinks as long as
we put a "warning" to take some parts of the coming article under advisement
and realize that if you go down this unheeded path, kiss your money away for at
least a generation and then you'll be fine, if all other variables remain constant.
EW believes in small foreign real estate holdings THAT CAN EARN RENTAL MONEY that stays in
the foreign country. But choosing wisely is a big deal. You must be wise in your choices. But, as a general
rule, the U.S. is awash with "undervalued" property and if you live in the U.S., I?d speculate in the U.S.
rather than Panama unless you?re a savvy world traveler.
Your Editor's own rule: If you can?t drive by it every day and be on hand to deal with problems or have
a very trusted prop management agent, then stay away. The problems are always that you need liquid money
at the same time property is frozen in a time-warp. Tax-lien sales in the U.S. are probably a lot more liquid.

PANAMA PROPERTY OPPORTUNITIES 2012
8 December 2011
This is Grandpa in Panama From: [email protected]. I will start with the
Bottom Line: There are a lot of good deals and desperate sellers in Panama
City right now. For those willing to sniff around and make offers, you can
become a millionaire in two or three years. Join me; right here, right now.
Background: A construction boom and real estate bubble for Panama City
condominiums lasted from 2003 until approximately 2007. Tens of thousands of
www.ExpatWorld.net
Expat World Page 7
December 2011
high rise apartment units were designed and sold off-plan to speculators,
typically before the developers broke ground. Speculators signed up for preconstruction units so fast that local developers were encouraged to design
and sell more and more condo towers and to keep raising prices. Each building
was more luxurious, higher and better than the last. During this 4-year boom,
sales prices for Panama City condos more than tripled from $800 per square
meter to up to $3,500 per square meter. This was very high for Panama, but
still cheap by international standards.
In London or Monaco, the best properties can sell at $50,000 per
square meter (hereafter m2). If you look at a photo of the Panama skyline, it
is very futuristic - as if Manhattan was rebuilt this year. Getting back to
recent history: The first of these condo towers were completed and delivered
prior to the global slowdown. Early speculators were able to "flip" their
units to other speculators and a few end-user buyers. With low down payments
and 100% price increases, flipping a deal could yield a 1,000% profit in a
year or two. Then everybody piled into the game. Too many players betting on
the same horse always changes the odds.
Today that party is over. Just as in Southern Spain and Dubai, there was
been massive overbuilding in Panama City and nearby resort areas. Note: Some
rural areas of Panama were completely unaffected by the boom and farms or
fincas that are off the beaten track can still be had for very low prices
that changed little in the past 10 years. But my readers (like you?) are more
interested in hot deals -- popular areas like Balboa Drive or Punta Patilla.
Going back to 2008: Almost overnight, demand for the high-rise condos
evaporated. Speculators who had made small (or not so small) down payments
were (as of 2008) left holding an empty bag. Major developers like the local
investors who were putting up the still unfinished Trump Tower at Punta
Pacifica-- the biggest, classiest building in town, were destined to file for
bankruptcy. Donald Trump himself, never invested a dime in the project ... We
hear that he just got paid very handsomely for the use of his name. (EW
editor's note: The exact same thing happened with the "Trump Tower" in
Waikiki, Hawaii)
The Trump Tower sales people are irrationally exuberant -- desperate
to move their huge inventory of unsold or defaulted units. Legally they are
in a mess with many lawsuits pending. Undeniably, it is a great building, but
it was built as a high-maintenance structure with huge public spaces and
facilities that apparently require much higher Home Owner Association fees
than are coming in Panama. Even with the standard 20 year real estate tax
exemption, the maintenance payments for owners could be 5 times what
similar buildings charge. We feel that once the Trump units are sold, these
charges could and would be raised to even more than the rental value. The
Trump Tower was over-built, over priced, and it is over here,it's almost
empty.
BACK TO HISTORY: In the last days of the boom, to support every increasing
asking prices, buildings started to be identified with internationally known
names. Example? Familiar names like the Hard Rock Hotel & Condos were
planned, financed and built by local real estate people. Foreigners, mostly
super rich Colombians bought mortgage bonds to finance the construction.
Investors are all now hurting. Why? Because developers and new owners are
sitting on around 10,000 unsold units with few buyers in sight. To avoid an
immediate write down and huge loss for the investors, many are still on the
books and still listed for sale at high boom era prices. Needless to say,
there are no buyers a the “old” prices.
The global economic slowdown has impacted Panama City?s condominium
www.ExpatWorld.net
Expat World Page 8

market
more than most other real estate markets around the world. Dubai, Las Vegas
and South Spain however are in a similar boat.
Tighter demand coupled with reduced credit availability has created
serious downward price pressure. In addition to reduced demand, there has
also been an increase in the supply of high-rise luxury condominiums. Many
new towers still under construction as of early 2012 are being completed and
offered for sale.
Permits were issued during the last year of the boom. Buildings were
started then. The projects could not be abandoned because even if demand
evaporated and the developers went bust, big insurance companies had issued
"completion bonds" to insure the buyers and the City that the projects could
not be abandoned. That brings us to today!
Condo speculators whose buildings were delivered in the last twelve
months were told to pay up the final full payments. There are no end users to
be seen, and no speculators for any flipping. Thus, the typical retirees, MDs
and airline pilots -amateur speculators who thought they knew how to double
their money or better, are walking away from their deposits. The attractive
long term mortgages previously available are still there, but at lower
ratios and higher interest rates.
Buyers who wanted to pay cash and close deals were going to be stuck
with Condo units they never intended to occupy, but were going to flip for a
quick profit. Except now (as of 2011 and 2012) there are no buyers at "list
prices." The very few units that are still selling (in the best neighborhoods
with triple A water views), move out at in actual sales around $1500 per m2.
Though some exuberant salespeople will claim otherwise, even the very best
property is not selling at anywhere near $3500 per m2, and seldom at even
$2500 per square meter. Thus, the last waves of buyers are deep underwater.
They have an unpleasant choice to make: They could close the deals they had
contracted for and end up owning apartments worth up to 40% less than they
pay, or more sensibly they can walk away from deals and lose their deposits.
Depending on when they had bought, these deposits could range from 10% of the
price to 35% of the total price. In some cases, if the pre-construction
contract was made early enoughÐlike 2006 when list prices were much lowerÐthe
buyer may get out at near his cost and thus, maybe even gain back a small
portion of his deposit. But time is running out for these people. Aha!
Therein lays the playbook that we (Grandpa) recommend. Look for these deals.
My personal consulting clients can get guidance, but you really don?t need
me. It is just a matter of looking at the FISBOWS (for sale by owner) and the
REOs (foreclosed properties held by banks, developers, etc.)
Some developers can hold on a while longer because of the cash flow from
forfeited deposits, and the few closings that still happen. But most are
falling like dominoes. They are defaulting on their bond payments or bridge
loans - the constructions loans that were supposed to be paid off by the new
hoards of eager buyers
ARE PANAMA’S ECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS STILL STRONG?
In my opinion, there is much less overhang of inventory than in the USA,
Dubai or Spain. In another article I explained the fact that literally
millions of wealthy individuals are looking for new citizenships and
residences in uncrowded, year-round-warm, and relatively safe places like
Panama. Ten or even fifteen thousand luxury units may be too much for Panama-a poor country with only 3 million inhabitants to absorb. But the buyers are
not going to be locals. Venezuelan escaping Communism are coming in. Many
Colombians are super rich, and they want a bolt-hole. Canadians and Americans
www.ExpatWorld.net
Expat World Page 9
December 2011
are still coming in. With a little push and good publicity from Grandpa and
his minions, Russians and Chinese will open their wallets for suitable deals.
There will be many more tenants seeking accommodation too. Capitalintensive projects like the Panama Canal expansion are responsible for
burgeoning economic activity. The Panama Canal project due to corruption and
mismanagement is way over budget and way behind schedule, but French,
Chinese, English and other foreign companies are sending people over to
Panama City to get in on the multi-billion dollar action. Some of the money
may be tainted, but for developers, landlords and us, we don?t need to look
or smell. We just rent or sell!
Additionally, many multinationals have already, or are establishing
regional headquarters or major operations in Business Friendly Panama. Panama
is a popular destination for foreign business people involved with these
projects. Then too, Panama is very friendly to retirees, with very
inexpensive gorgeous condos in the beach areas often at the price of a garage
in their home town. A hundred dollar gourmet dinner in Europe can be
had here for 20% of the price. Same with groceries.
HOTELS
Due to swelling tourism statistics and a growing segment of business
travelers, hotel occupancy rates in Panama have traditionally been quite
high. The most well run hotels operate at full capacity for several months at
a time. Despite new competition from apartment owners renting out "shortterm," the better hotels are still showing reduced, but decent returns on
investment.
Given this excellent market for transients, smart property investors
can put 2 and 2 together with no market for them to flip their condos. The
better units can still generate an excellent return by competing with hotels
in the short-stay rental market. The idea is getting to be very popular with
travelers why pay up to $250/night in a hotel when you can pay $100/night or
less for a furnished and infinitely homier apartment? The idea of vacation
apartment rentals recently took off in Panama just as it did in similarly
situated Barcelona (Spain). The local Panama craigslist.org
http://craigslist.org website and similar are now full of apartment
listings. Many real estate agents are also specializing in property
management with short term rentals being the fastest growing segment of the
market. Just Google "Apartments for rent-Panama City."
However, when things are doing well, you can always count on the
idiot leftist in government to try and mess things up. Panama?s National
Assembly recently passed "Resolution 52.?" The intent of the resolution was
to ensure that the government will collect taxes on transient rental income.
Except that?s not what the law said. What Resolution 52 actually does is make
it illegal for anyone to rent his/her property for a period of less than one
year. Is that brilliant or what?
A few years ago they did something equally stupid and senseless with
their visa policy: At the time there were a lot of retired gringos and others
who were living in Panama full time on a 90-day tourist visas. They were
doing visa-runs every three months, without ever applying for legal
residency. In its efforts to fix what was not broken, the government
decided that tourists would only be granted a non-renewable 30-day tourist
visa.
The decision had the expected effect
real estate sales and tourism
numbers dropped. Then the government reversed its policy in favor of the
original 90-day visa. Shortly afterwards, they decided to give tourists a six
month visa, and that is where the law stands today.
www.ExpatWorld.net
Expat World Page 10
December 2011
Undoubtedly, the same thing will happen with the no short term rentals
law. Maybe hotel owners benefit, but it hurts the overall economy and makes
crooks out of landlords The government (Grandpa predicts) will reverse this
decision if they have not already done so by the time you read this.
SMART MONEY?
The smart money and Grandpa is very bullish on Panama’s future as the
financial and business capital of Latin America. Florida and the USA in
general are shooting itself in the foot with exorbitant taxes, rent controls,
and criminal laws. Twenty percent of the entire population is considering
moving out of the USA and "Escaping from America."Bottom line: There are
plenty of undervalued distressed properties available here. Anyone who sniffs
around and makes “low ball” offers can capitalize on them. If you were
considering real estate in Panama, you should not let the idiotic laws passed
by the minority socialist element of Panama affect your decision to move or
invest here.
Use Grandpa?s 100 house rule. Look at 100 properties personally so
that you know and understand the market. Then make offers (no money down and
below market values) on all of the next hundred quality properties you see.
Do that and during the next year, you should get at least five sweet deals.
They will make you a million and generate enough income for you to live
happily ever after.
As to the new law: If it is still in effect when you read this, the
solution, circumvention or work-around is simple. In your internet or other
ads, don't mention any one year-lease. When the guest arrives, explain the
law and how to get around it legally. Your tenant signs a year lease with a
small cash deposit left with you the ownerÐor your manager. When the guest
leaves, he legally abandons his lease without personal liability. The
landlord, you, keeps the deposit (which just happens to equal the amount of
rent-days the tourist actually stayed).
By owning top quality rental apartments you should be able to
generate a respectable 10 to 15% year return on money you can still borrow
here at 7 or 8%. Owner 2nd mortgage carry back loans are not popular here,
but if you make any offers these days, desperate sellers will listen.

INDIAN WANTING COFFEE

Travel
Marco Morawec is a shoestring travel expert who is
our guest contributor this month to Expat World's World
of Travel. He presents:
3 Questions to ask yourself before
leaving your country.
Being an Expat is a badge of honor! Something I believe
everyone should do in their life. Go abroad, go beyond the
first step of traveling and actually relocate your entire life to
a new place, country, continent‚ and in fifty years, even a new
planet. But as exciting and adventurous as it sounds to live
in bustling Bangkok, a palm-fringed island in the South
Pacific or somewhere in Latin America, you need to
understand one thing: leaving your home country is hard. In
fact it is probably one of the hardest things you will ever do
in your life.
Think about it. Since you were a little kid you made
friends, developed networks in school, had a family to
support you in tough times and could count on a system
that you understood. If you move abroad, all of that is
taken away from you in an instant. New friends need to
be made, networks re-built and a new system learned
from the bottom up. In the worst case scenario you are
stripped of your communication skills too, because you
don't speak the local language yet.
So what's a wannabe expat to do? Before you start
getting too far into your dream of leaving home and
waking up on the beach of your dreams every morning,
ask yourself three simple questions:
1. Can I live on very little money? --- Your savings
from back home will stretch much further in Asia, Latin
America, Africa or pretty much anywhere in the
developing world. But unless you have huge cash
reserves or a stream of income from back home you will
run out of money eventually. So you need to plan ahead
and think about how you can sell your skills wherever
you dream to go. Take me for example, I do web design,
analytics and optimization for a living. If I were to go
to a remote Indonesian island I would have a hard time
making a living based on my specialties, simply because
nobody has a website on a remote island and the few
people who do have one couldn't care less if I show
them how to generate more business leads through their
Expat World Page 12
December 2011
website. Visitors come to their island because of the 5-star
ratings in the guidebooks and not because of some local
website. Plus, nobody really has internet anyways, so
what's the point in lead optimizing a website if none of
the locals check their email regularly anyways.
So maybe I could open a backpacker or a bar at the
beach? Well, how much experience do I have in running
a backpacker or a bar at the beach. Not much. And that's
exactly my point. If you don't have a lot of experience in
the expertise that's in demand where you're planning on
going you will need to learn those skills while you are
there. That will take time and time without income makes
you use up your savings, which is exactly why you need
to ask yourself "can I live on very little money" and for
how long?
Once you figured out how long you can live in your
dream destination you can create an action plan and figure
out if you can learn whatever skill you need to have in
that time frame. Think you can pull that off? Yes, great
jump on an airplane. Not ready yet, go back to the
grindstone and save money for a few more months while
learning the local language at night.
2. Am I a social person? --- If you move to a new
country you will be alone. A lot. Making friends at home,
in your own culture is hard enough. Try doing it in a
different culture without understanding what's going on
most of the time. Finding interesting people to talk to,
exchange ideas and share adventures with will take time.
Yes, you can hang out with all the other expats in town
and wear your expat badge of honor high on your chest,
but is that really why you are far away from home? To
hang out with the same people all over again? Do yourself
a favor and don't do that all too often.
Instead, leave your comfort zone and meet the locals.
Get used to stuttering broken sentences of Thai, Bahasa
Indonesia or Spanish and feeling like a fourth grader
trying to solve a math problem in front of the entire school
class. Don't shy away from those situations, rather
embrace them, because personal growth opportunities like
this one are hard to come by back home. I promise you
that if you keep going out of your comfort zone and trying
your best to meet the locals you will find a new local
friend. And once you have your first friend you make new
friends much, much faster.
3. Do I thrive in Chaos? --- If you are reading this I
must assume that you are coming from a western world.
A world where most things are organized, traffic is mostly
controlled by rules, things have fixed prices and if you
need something from an official institution you can find
out what you need to provide in order to get it within a
reasonable amount of time. Well, all that's about to
change. Trying to figure out how things work in India,
Asia or Latin America is very similar to spinning in circles
until you are feeling dizzy. In other words it will cause
www.ExpatWorld.net
you a lot of headaches and keep your learning cure step.
So when nothing that you buy has a fixed price, there are
no supermarkets, traffic feels suicidal and you bargain for
everything from a haircut to a carrot, do you wake up in
the morning with a smile on your face? Or to repeat my
question, does that kind of chaos, the hustle and bustle
make you try harder, motivate you and fulfill the dreams
you came here to achieve?
If you think you will keep your cool and thrive in
a bit more chaos than back home, you will absolutely love
being an expat and living abroad.
Now it's your turn. What do you think is the hardest
part of being an expat?

The Four Cats and the Government
Four men were bragging about how smart their cats were.
The first man was an Engineer, The second man was an Accountant, The third man was a Chemist, and The fourth man
was a Government Employee. To show off, the Engineer called
his cat, "T-square, do your stuff." T-square pranced over to the
desk, took out some paper and pen and promptly drew a circle,
a square, and a triangle.
Everyone agreed that was pretty smart. But the Accountant
said his cat could do better. He called his cat and said, "Spreadsheet, do your stuff." Spreadsheet went out to the kitchen and
returned with a dozen cookies. He divided them into 4 equal
piles of 3 cookies. Everyone agreed that was good.
But the Chemist said his cat could do better. He called his
cat and said, "Measure, do your stuff." Measure got up, walked
to the fridge, took out a quart of milk, got a 10 ounce glass from
the cupboard and poured Exactly 8 ounces without spilling a
drop into the glass. Everyone agreed that was pretty good. Then
the three men turned to the Government Employee and said,
"What can your cat do?"
The Government Employee
called his cat and said, "CoffeeBreak, do your stuff."
CoffeeBreak jumped to his
feet....... Ate the cookies........Drank the milk.....
Shit on the paper.......
Screwed the other three
cats........ Claimed he injured
his back while doing so.

Broccoli with a wallop
LONDON: British scientist have unveiled
a new type of broccili that, experts say,
packs a big nutritional punch.
The broccoli was specially grown to
contain two to three times the normal
amount of glucoraphanin, a nutrient
believed to help ward off heart disease. It
works by breaking down fat in the body,
preventing it from clogging th earteries
To create thevegetable, sold as “super
broccoli”, the scientists crossbred traditional
British broccoli with a wild, biter Sicilian
variety that has no flowery head and a big
dose of glucoraphanin. After 14 years, the
enhanced hybrid was prodiced, which has
been granted a patent by the European
authorities. No genetic modifications were
involved.

Freedom Dies in America and
Americans are Exiting
EW thanks the Freedom Alliance and the
Sovereign Society's for their insights and article
about Americans voting with their feet and
becoming citizens of the world.
Growing numbers of Americans living abroad
are renouncing their U.S. citizenship because of the
Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) not to mention the ever more burdensome and
complex IRS reporting obligations that now come
with the treat of financial and even criminal
penalties.
The United States is one the few major nations
that requires their citizens living abroad to pay
income taxes. The only way to end that U.S. tax
obligation is to terminate U.S. Citizenship. The
latest statistics reveal that more than 1,500
Americans living offshore did just that. According
to the Federal Register, that's up from 743 people in
2009 and 235 in 2008.
Jackie Bugnion, director of American Citizens
Abroad, a Geneva, Switzerland-based group, says
the exodus is a backlash on the part of U.S.
expatriates and the offshore financial sector to the
radical IRS claim that its jurisdiction extends to
every bank and financial institution in the entire
world.
That extraordinary IRS claim is embodied in
FATCA, and was adopted in 2010 by the then
Democrat-dominated Congress as part of the Hiring
Incentives to Restore Employment Act and signed
with approval by President Obama.
This law threatens foreign financial banks and
financial institutions of all kinds with a 30%
withholding tax if they fail to comply with an
onerous reporting regime on their U.S. clients.
Dangerous to the U.S. Economy
No hearings were held on this radical proposal
and few knew it was even contained within the
pending bill - just as its sponsors wanted it.
This summer, American Citizens Abroad
launched an international campaign to repeal
FATCA, which they describe as "misconceived"
and "dangerous for the U.S. economy."
This complements a U.S. drive to repeal FATCA
led by the Coalition for Tax Competition,of which
The Sovereign Society is a member.
While the reaction of an increasing number of
Americans has been to acquire a second passport
and dual citizenship as a prelude to ending their
U.S. status, numerous foreign banks have reacted
www.ExpatWorld.net
by dumping existing American clients and refusing
new ones.
As if the threat of FACTA were not enough, the
IRS has an active prejudice against U.S. persons
with offshore bank accounts and business interests,
automatically assuming any American who dares to
engage in offshore financial activity is probably a
tax evader or worse.
Add to that prejudice the arbitrary application of
a complex U.S. tax code, plus the attitude that the
taxpayer is always guilty until they can prove
otherwise.
Preposterous Claims -- The IRS makes the
preposterous claim that enforcement of FACTA
possibly can produce additional tax revenues of
US$8 billion over 10 years. At the same time,
estimates of the cost of implementing FACTA run
into hundreds of billions of dollars, plus at least
$10 billion per year for filing requirements.
Nonetheless, in a rare instance of official
sanity in July, the IRS announcedthat the original
January 1, 2013 effective date for FATCA had been
dropped.
Under the new IRS schedule, offshore private
banks, which face the most onerous IRS
requirements under FATCA, will not have to
provide details on U.S. clients with accounts with
more than $50,000 until 2014. Lower value
accounts at private banks do not need to be reported
until the end of 2014. Certain other accounts do not
have to be reported until 2015.
No doubt what brought about this delay was the
firestorm of anti-FATCA American public opinion
and a chorus of protests, not only from the
international financial and banking industry but
also from foreign governments.
Canadian treasury officials have attacked
FATCA calling it unworkable, far too costly and an
unprecedented U.S. intrusion on their national
sovereignty.
Typical of these foreign complaints was a
prediction that if FATCA were imposed on The
Bahamasthat offshore financial center would drop
most of its American clients.
Delay is not the answer to this colossal FACTA
mess. Complete repeal is.
Much hinges on the outcome of the 2012 U.S.
elections, not least of which is the freedom of
Americans to do business where they choose.

performance was just 52 percent
MACAU -- Gambling revenues in Macau broke a new record last month rising to 42 percent on-year.

It's strange but true. The more you watch TV news and read
the mainstream press, the less you tend to know about important
issues and events and the REAL story. This phenomena is even
more pronounced if you're concerned with the international
scene. Fortunately at EXPAT WORLD, we have developed a
newsletter that challenges the bias, inaccuracies and censorship
of Big Brother, and Big Business directed and orchestrated
media that masquerades as news.
Our research staff monitors 100's of international TV and radio
sources, the internet, magazines, newspapers, private journals,
computer nets and inside sources each month to provide you
information that will protect your assets along with your
privacy, freedom and confidentiality on personal and business
dealings on a truly international scale. We sift through the media
morass, and more importantly, use our inside sources to publish
EXPAT WORLD, "the newsletter of international living" in a
cheeky monthly format.
We constantly reveal what "you ain't spozed to know" - give
you sources and know-how to maintain your privacy, keep those
hard-earned bucks away from the tax man and other asset
reducers. We introduce you to tricks to sidestep Big Brother
governments and bureaucracies keeping them from making you
just a source of assets for their coffers - a human resource to be
milked dry and brainwashed to follow the party line. We free
you of those "for-your-own-good laws." We show you more
loopholes than a Philadelphia lawyer for living a life of true
freedom. We arm you with the knowledge needed to pursue the
goal of breaking the chains of bureaucrats and BIG BROTHER
wherever you're living.
