Syntax
Syntax is the arrangement of words to make sentences
A Hebrew sentence is quite different from English
Word order in a Hebrew sentence usually V S O: Verb, Subject, direct Object
Verb comes first and makes Hebrew a dynamic + action orientated language
Sentence are usually connected with the word “and”

Context
Hebrew depends more on context, facial expressions, tone of voice, and physical
actions for understanding
Composition of Hebrew words
Almost very word is constructed from a 3 letter consonantal based root
Root takes on different forms depending on context and tense of verb ect.
Root can also be formed into noun, adverb, adjective ect.
eg: English – wrt = to write
writer = person who writes
writer = writing utensil
writ = that which is written
Just knowing one root enables you to identify many words based on that root

The names of the directions seem to be associated with physical landmarks for the ancient Israelites living
in the region of Judea.
East - Mizrach / Kedem - Main point of orientation


Mizrach literally means "from the place where the sun rises" and emphasizes the location itself. It
shares the same root as the Hebrew words for "front", "welcome" and "ancient".
Kedem derives from edom meaning “red” and refers to the colour of the rising dawn emphasizing
direction, rather than location.
The word kedem is also the word for “the past.” In the ancient Hebrew mind the past is in front of you
while the future is behind you, the opposite way we think of the past and future. The point of reference is
to be facing East, with the South to the right and the North to the left.
South – Darom / Teyman / Negev
 Negev refers to the desert area South of Israel.
 Teyman from the root yaman meaning "to the right" or yemen meaning “right hand”.
Shows again how main orientation is East.
North - Tzafon / Smol
 Tzafon derived from Mount Zaphon on the northern edge of Syria. Tzafon is spelled identical to
the Hebrew word for "hidden".
 Smol shares its root with “left”
West – Ma'arav / Yam
 Ma‟arav means "from the place of evening” or "from the place of mixing" - or the place where day
light mixes with darkness and day mixes/turns into night.
 Yam means “sea” and it refers to the Mediterranean Sea. Yamah which literally means "seaward"
or “towards the direction of the sea”
We often orient ourselves by facing North. In the ancient world the point of orientation was East in the
direction of the rising sun. The East was before them, the West behind, the South to the right, and the
North to the left. The future wasn‟t in front, but behind, that is to say invisible.
The Temple faced East towards the rising sun, and access to it required movement toward the West.
When the Israelites travelled to and worshipped in the Temple they faced the West and had the rising sun
behind them. Easterly facing temples and altars were unique to the Hebrew religion of Judaism.
Archaeologists can easily and immediately identify a Jewish altar in distinction from pagan altars because
of this unique fact. In early centuries, churches were built with the pulpit on the East end making worship in
opposite direction. Jewish synagogues are not oriented East specifically; rather they are orientated to face
Jerusalem.
The tent of Moses had its veil and mercy seat towards the East. The tribe of Judah had their camp on the
East. The temple of Solomon the Gate of the Lord was placed Eastward. When Christ hung on the Cross,
had His face turned towards the West. When He was received again into heaven He was borne towards
the East.
It can be difficult to understand the directions in some translations. "left" translated as North or South as
"right". Don't trust any English translation on this.
