Sounds of the Dolomites: Walk along paths of art and nature towards a
horizon that opens up to the vibrations and echoes of all the different
types of music in the world, towards the sounds and voices gathered
where the earth comes closest to the sky. Both the musicians and the
audience, music and mountain lovers alike, all set off to climb the path together, brought together by a sincere passion for adventures of the body
and soul. And each step brings them a little closer the summit. There is
no limit to the musical style, language and culture on offer: classical music, jazz, singer-songwriters, choirs, ethnic and contemporary music. The
concert at the end of the walk is an encounter between art and nature.
Musicians shouldering their instruments climb up the mountain, sit on
the grass or rocks and play surrounded by their audience, freed from all
the constraints of convention and structure. Music becomes a universal
language, the mountains a space for freedom. Sounds of the Dolomites
is all this, every year in Trentino, in the most beautiful, most cherished,
mountains in the world.

Please bear in mind that the organisers reserve the right to bring the starting
times of the concerts forward to 1 pm should weather conditions make this necessary. Also remember that if artists do not reach the venue designated for the
concert due to bad weather, the event will take place on the same day down in
the valley, as indicated in this publication.

We recommend you wear suitable clothing and bring with you some water and
food. Especially for the Dawn in the Dolomites events, walking boots, anorak, cap,
gloves and an electric torch are essential.
Remember that you will have to pay for tickets if you use the cable car or chair
lifts or any shuttle services.

To open the 19th edition of the Festival one of the most intriguing female
voices on the Italian pop scene and a jazz trumpet virtuoso pay tribute to
Amy Winehouse, a great star whose light burnt out all too soon. Along
with famous songs by the English singer, jazz and soul classics will be
performed, including songs made famous by Otis Redding, Etta James and
Nina Simone.

One of Italy’s top mountaineers, and the star of great adventures in the
Himalayas, gives an account of what mountains mean to him: challenges
and achievements but also the solidarity that has to prevail when survival

Three days of hiking with a concert at the end. Mario Brunello, a guest
every year at Sounds of the Dolomites, and the musicians of the Lyskamm
Quartet – a chamber music ensemble taking part in the European Chamber Music Academy education project - share an experience of life in the
mountains with the trekkers and spectators. The location, sensations and

Hamilton De Holanda, an amazing 10-string mandolin virtuoso from Brazil, has become famous all over the world for his highly unusual technical
ability and contagious communication skills. He combines a delicate touch
with fast guitar licks to produce highly innovative expressive undertones on
this instrument, which he has been playing since he was five years old. He
forms a trio with bass player André Vasconcelos and percussionist Thiago
Da Serrinha, also taking inspiration from Paganini’s Caprices.

winner of the “Top Jazz 2012” referendum promoted by “Musica Jazz” for
best Italian jazz musician of the year. He is also a talented composer and

project). Together with the Sousaphonix band, he gives intelligent, spectacular renditions of the New Orleans and Chicago traditions, bringing

Author of Under The Tree’s Voices, an orchestral piece dedicated to the Val di
Fiemme resonance spruce, Ezio Bosso is now back with a new composition
under the emblematic title Six Breaths. Six violoncellists play it for the very
first time with Bosso himself on the piano. The piece explores all the different
meanings of breath, from breath whilst running to crying. The sighs are narrated by an ensemble put together to form a sort of lung, which is expressed
through the way this Piedmontese composer typically conceives music.

debut album with the prestigious ECM record label. This Albanian singer
rediscovers traditional songs from her homeland, combining these with
refined, expressively moulded European jazz. Along with Colin Valon (piano), Patrice Moret (double bass) and Norbert Pfammatter (drums), she
explores Balkan folk melodies, interpreting them with an originality that
bursts forth into creative improvisational processes.

Forts, patrol passages and
trenches on the Plateaux
Three Italian musicians (Mario Brunello, Luca Ranieri, Danilo Rossi) and
three from Austria (Sebastian Gürtler, Régis Bringolf, Florian Berner) set
out on a walk, stopping off at the forts along the route where the Great
War was fought to play music for string instruments by Schönberg, Berg,
Busoni and other composers. The trekking and concert are the first part of
a project lasting several years that will gradually involve other musicians
from countries that fought during the First World War.

For the third year running, one of the most highly acclaimed violinists of recent years is returning to the Dolomites. The four concerts at Baita Premessaria, built using the highly-prized wood of Val di Fiemme resonance spruce,
will provide the opportunity for Isabelle Faust to perform Bach’s three Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. Winner in 1987 of the Leopold Mozart
Competition and the Concorso Paganini in 1993, she usually encompasses
a range of different repertoires, including contemporary pieces.

An original encounter between two musicians belonging only apparently to
two different worlds - classical and jazz music – and a writer. What they all
have in common is a natural spirit of adventure, which provides the nexus for
this special occasion based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. Mario Brunello and
Umberto Petrin attempt to explore the considerable influence and inspiration that these works have exerted on music through conversation between
themselves and with the voice of Stefano Benni. The Arte Sella openair museum will form the backdrop to the intermingling of notes and words.

In the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi, the Ottavo Richter band
revisit arias and cabalettas that have gone down in Italian history with
their usual nonchalance. With them journalist and theatre and television writer Ira Rubini, who plays the original part of a Risorgimento-style
melomaniac, with special guest appearance by Gianluigi Carlone from
Banda Osiris. The performance is based on events from the life of Verdi,
the maestro from Busseto, and Italian history at marching speed, offering
unusual interpretations of famous pieces.

IL BOSCO CHE SUONA
Val di Fiemme, the Valley of Harmony, has some of the most inviting and
well-maintained woods in the Dolomites, managed by the thousand-yearold Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme. Overlooked by the towering Trentino
Dolomites, these forests are made up of the spruce fir, which provides a
high quality resonance wood used by Antonio Stradivari and other great
lute masters such as the Guarnieri and Amati families to produce the most
prestigious musical instruments in the world.
In honour of these “music trees”, Val di Fiemme has created Il Bosco che
Suona (Musical Wood), a park dedicated to resonance wood and music located in Valmaggiore above Predazzo, in the Lagorai mountain range. Live,
well rooted trees in the heart of this forest are symbolically donated to great
artists who in the course of their lives have brought prestige to the resonance spruce by playing instruments made from its wood.
The artists after whom spruces were named in the first few years of the
project are: Gidon Kremer, Uto Ughi, Ivry Gitlis, Mario Brunello, Piero Farulli,
Daniel Hope, Marco Rizzi, Danilo Rossi, Ilya Grubert, Giuliano Carmignola, Uri
Caine, Iva Bittova, Ezio Bosso, Salvatore Accardo ed Isabelle Faust, Giovanni
Sollima, Stefano Bollani. Along with these, the musicians of the Kremerata
Baltica, of the Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo, I Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, I Virtuosi
Italiani and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

Custodians of mountain traditions, Mountain Guides however are not insensitive to the challenges posed by a fast-changing society. So, alongside rock and ice climbing, ski mountaineering, hiking and trekking, today
they also offer more unusual activities such as sport climbing, canyoning
and walks to the most highly evocative parts of the Nature Parks.
There are currently 341 Guides on the provincial register. An office is available in every valley where you can find information, make enquiries, book
excursions or enrol on mountaineering courses.
As well as Alpine Guides, Trentino also has other professional guides
known as Accompagnatori di Territorio (235) who accompany visitors
on hikes up to an altitude of 1,800 metres and provide an excellent opportunity for people to discover the mountains by visiting places of natural
beauty or cultural interest.
