Wheaton forum draws prospective Sheriff,
Public Administrator candidates
Charlea Estes
As the August 2 Primary
Election approaches, the
candidates for Barry County
offices are campaigning and
talking to community members about why they are running. This year’s Sheriff race
has seven candidates, six
Republicans and one Democrat. The Public Administrator seat has drawn three
Republican candidates.
In an effort to inform
the community about the
different platforms of the
candidates, the Wheaton
Fire Department held a candidate forum for them to
answer questions raised by
the community. Assistant
fire chief Lindy Lombard
asked the candidates questions in front of a packed
house at the Wheaton Community Building on Thursday, May 19.
All Sheriff and Public
Administrator candidates
participated in the forum.
Republican Sheriff candidates are Travis Hilburn,
Danny Boyd, James Smith,
Justin Fohn, Terry Meek and
Gary Davis. The Democrat
Sheriff candidate is Justin
Ruark. The Public Administrator candidates are Andy
Reavis, Rodney Hughes and
Keith Daniels, all Republicans.
Questions for the Sheriff
candidates ranged from why
they chose to run for office
to what changes they think
Class of 2016 graduate Courtney Rasmussen is all smiles and
high-fives after receiving her diploma.

and the biggest problems
plaguing Barry County.
While all of the candidates agreed that drugs were
the largest issue facing Barry
County, their opinions varied on how it should be dealt
with. One question reached
to asking how the candidates
felt about the Southwest
Missouri Drug Task Force.
Most candidates felt the
task force was lacking in
presence in Barry County.
Meek said he believed all ties
should be cut, and instead
the area municipalities
should band together to pool
resources and hire an officer
dedicate to the task. Ruark
said he felt the connection
was beneficial because having officers that local criminals do not know is essential.
He said, “It’s beneficial when
no one knows who you are.
They don’t know our county,
but we do. We need to work
together.”
During the forum, each
candidate had varying goals
they felt were integral. Davis
pressed that resources are a
large problem, and he hoped
to find grant funding and get
the Barry County Commission to provide more money
for additional resources and
deputies.
Meek hopes to get a
sub-station set up in other
communities, possibly in
fire stations, to deter crime.
Boyd said he believes there
needs to be more training
and more equipment for the
deputies. Ruark hopes to get
the technology in the patrol
cars so officer can do reports
from their cars and stay in
the public more. Smith also
mentioned technology, suggesting grants to get the

Butler Hollow forest management
ALTERNATIVE 4 SELECTED, ONLY 3,600 ACRES AFFECTED
Charlea Estes
After a year and a half of debate and
public comment, the fate of the Mark
Twain national Forest Butler Hollow project is decided. The National Forestry Service deduced on the second to least invasive management plan, which will impact
around 3,600 acres instead of the initially
proposed 18,000.
The proposed Butler Hollow project drew a lot of attention when the AvaCassville-Willow Springs Ranger District
announced their plan to begin a large management project that would affect a large
portion of forest in the Cassville area citing concerns over non-native plant species,
lacking open woodland and glade areas,
and concern for the overall health of the
forest. There was significant backlash from
the local community out of fear of devastation to the natural landscape.
The initial 30-day comment period on
the proposal ended in December 2014, but
the ranger district opted to open a new comment period given the volume of responses
from the community. After much analysis,
listening to public concerns and consideration, the district came back to the community with four alternatives to the initial
plan. One of the four alternatives was the
one chosen, which cuts the area that will
receive management by 80 percent.
Joe Koloski, District Ranger, said,

Barry County Advertiser Central Crossing firefighters receive lifesaver awards
Central Crossing firefighters were presented with lifesaver awards after performing CPR on a patient suffering a heart attack. Pictured above, from left to right, are: Rusty Rickard, Central Crossing fire chief; Britten House; Matt Privett; Kyle Moore; and Shea Lathrum.
On the afternoon of May 6, a
gentleman named Mr. Patterson called into Barry County
E-911 complaining of chest
pains and difficulty breathing. Central Crossing first
responders were dispatched
immediately to respond.
Firefighter
and
first
responder Matt Privett and
firefighter and EMT Britten House responded to the
scene. Upon their arrival,
Patterson was found to be
alert but complaining of chest
pain and difficulty breathing.
While his vitals were taken,
Patterson lost consciousness,
was unresponsive and found
to not be breathing or have
a pulse. Privett and House
immediately started CPR.
The Mercy ambulance
staffed by paramedic Shea
Lathrum and EMT Kyle
Moore arrived moments
later. Patterson was loaded
into the ambulance where
CPR efforts continued and
he was defibrillated. Central
Crossing crews established
a landing zone at the VFW
and Mercy Lifeline helicopter
transported Mr. Patterson to
the hospital in Springfield.
On May 12, Central
Crossing Fire Department
received a phone call that
Patterson was doing well
after suffering his obvious
heart attack and receiving a
stent at the hospital. On May
16, Mr. Patterson walked into
the fire station and was able
to meet two of the men who
played an instrumental part
in saving his life.
On Tuesday night, May 17,
Privett and House were honored with lifesaver awards for
their quick actions and CPR
efforts that no doubt contributed to saving Patterson’s
life. Moore and Lathrum will
also be recognized by their
employer (Mercy EMS) at a
later time.
Cassville man jailed after severe assault
Judge Johnnie Cox ordered
a $50,000 cash-only bond for
his charges. Moore is charged
with class A domestic assault
with serious physical injury.
Moore is currently being
held in the Barry County Jail
in lieu of the bond. According to the affidavit, he also
has a prior criminal history.
Cassville High School teen
recovering after Farm Road wreck
Courtney Rasmussen
A 17-year-old Cassville
girl, Hope Boston, was seriously injured in a car accident on Wednesday, May
18, when involved in a two
car collision at a four way
intersection near Cassville.
All persons involved in the
accident are students at
Cassville High School.
Boston was a passenger
in a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Sky Dill,
16, of Cassville. The other
vehicle involved was a
1990 Ford Mustang driven
by Tyler Gennarelli, 18, of
Cassville.
Dill was headed eastbound and Gennarelli was
headed northbound four
miles South of Cassville
when both vehicles failed to
stop at a four-way stop and
collided in the intersection
on Farm Road 1135. Dill’s
vehicle rolled while Gennarelli’s spun, and Boston
was partially ejected from
the passenger window with
one leg pinned under the
Mercury Mountaineer that
had rolled on it’s side.
All occupants involved
in the accident were wearing their seatbelts. Bos-
ton was pinned under the
vehicle until Brice’s Towing was able to remove the
vehicle from her leg. All
other occupants involved
in the collision were able
to exit the vehicles with no
injuries.
Boston’s
injuries
included an open wound
and road rash on her right
ankle and a broken left
ankle. Boston has undergone two surgeries since
the wreck, and she is working toward recovery.
When asked what the
most negative part of
recovery is, Boston replied,
“Realizing my recovery is
not going to be just a fast
one, it’s going to take time.
I wish I could just get up
and walk.”
Boston also stated, “I feel
so comforted from all the
support I have been receiving from our community. I
Boston
never would have imagined
I would have this many visitors or such a large amount
of people praying for me. I
just want to hug and thank
each person individually.”
Boston was able to
attend her brother’s graduation on Sunday, May 22,
despite her injuries.

Board of Exeter Maplewood Cemetery Association
extend a sincere thanks to our past and present supporters.
Your continued support is vital as savings interest rates remain at all time record lows.
Our only sources of revenue are plot sales, interest income and donations from you.
These revenue sources are dedicated to mowing, general maintenance and repairs.
Our interest income doesn’t begin to cover mowing expense. We continue to tap our
savings accounts to cover routine maintenance and repair expenditures.
The board works very hard to invest our funds prudently and to spend the income
wisely. We are making this appeal knowing that you have strong feelings for the
well-being and upkeep of the cemetery. Your donations are tax deductible. Donations
or inquiries may be mailed to us at the below noted address. Again, we thank you and
appreciate any donations for continued support of the cemetery.

FOREST from FRONT
tem health on a reduced
scale while being responsive to concerns expressed
by the public.” Big concerns
involved the use of commercial herbicides to curb
vegetation
overgrowth,
commercial timber harvesting and the scale of the
project.
Essentially, the community’s concerns were
addressed by reducing the
area to be treated, not using
herbicides for vegetation
control and eliminating the
commercial harvesting.
The 3,600 acres that
the forest service will be
focusing on is near Roaring River State Park where
forest management has
already been in place for a
number of years. Koloski
said, “Alternative 4 offers
an opportunity to expand
and connect restored ecosystems on the landscape
over time.”
By opting for Alternative
4, the forestry service conceded to apply the needed
management for forest
health on a much smaller
scale. The initial goal was
to return the land to historical conditions, but analysis
provided the district with
a plan that would satisfy
a need to improve forest
health as well as addressing
public concerns.
As it stands, Alternative
4 will involve tree thinning, cedar tree removal,
prescribed burning, as well
as some road maintenance.
In total, 3,607 acres will
receive prescribed burns,
422 acres will have commercial hardwood restoration thinning, 117 acres
will have commercial pine
and hardwood removal,
and 574 acres will have
noncommercial hardwood
restoration thinning where
trees will be cut and left on
the forest floor.
Currently, the Butler Hollow project is in a
45-day objection period
that began on Tuesday,
May 24. Once the objection
period passes, there will be
a timeline established for
the project, which is a longterm management strategy.
The full plan can be

Hike to Conquer
Cancer at Roaring River June 4
Charlea Estes
A new event is coming to
Barry County on June 4, and
it ties enjoying the local state
park with fundraising efforts
for cancer research. Roaring
River State Park is the site of
the local Hike to Conquer
Cancer, an initiative to raise
money for the American
Cancer Society.
While this year will also
have a Relay for Life event in
Monett as in years prior, the
Hike to Conquer Cancer is
closer to Cassville and organizers hope to draw more
participants to raise money
but also spotlight the beauty
of the local park.
One of the event’s organizer’s, Ann Hennigan,
stated, “The name of he
game is to get people out
there and enjoy the parks.”
The event is being held in
conjunction with National
Hike Day.
Hennigan said she was
approached by local community organizer for the
Relay for Life Courtney
Furgerson about putting the
event together and working
with Roaring River. Hennigan said, “It was a resounding yes. I think we have one
of the prettiest parks in the
state, and I wanted to showcase that for a good cause.”
Hennigan is also being
helped by Noelle Harmon.
The Hike to Conquer
Cancer is open to people
of all abilities and features
two different options. Novice hikers can choose the
Nature Hike option and hike
one of three official Hike to
Conquer Cancer trails at the
park.
The second option for
more experienced hikers
is the Ultimate Hike Challenge. Participants are challenged to hike all seven
trails, more than 10 miles,
at Roaring River in one day.
Hikers will have from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. to complete all
seven trails, checking in at
each trailhead with a volunteer. Each trailhead will have
a water and snack station for
hikers to refuel and recharge
throughout the day.
During the event, there
will also be food, live entertainment and activities for
friends and families to enjoy.
To register for the Hike
to Conquer Cancer, go
online to www.acshikerr.
org or register the day of.
The Nature Hike is $20 for
adults and $15 for kids age
12 and under. The Ultimate
Hike Challenge is $40 and
includes a tech shirt and gift.

Local libraries prep for summer reading program
Julie Pruitt
Teachers and students
are dancing in the street.
School is out for the summer.
Friends, vacations, swimming and relaxing are all on
the agenda. Unfortunately,
kids don’t immerse themselves in reading while having all this fun. Therefore,
valuable reading and critical
thinking skills are put on a
back burner, and students
have to spend several weeks
getting back on track and
regaining these lost skills
when school starts. Luckily, the area libraries recognize this problem and have
jumped on board to keep
learning alive.
Local libraries are gearing
up for an exciting summer
reading program thanks to
the LSTA (Library Services
and Technology Act) grant
awarded to the Barry-Lawrence Regional Library in the
amount of $14,992.
The summer reading program is open to everyone,
0-99+, based on the theme
“On Your Mark, Get Set,
Read!” The program will be
available at the local libraries
as well as online from May
30 through July 31.
Everyone is welcome
to join these fun and free
activities. When you register
at your local library, there is
the added incentive of prizes.
A small prize will be given
for every five books read
along with your name added
to a drawing for a Kindle
E-reader at the end of the
summer.
At the Cassville Branch,
preschoolers will participate
in storytime based around
various themes, including, All About You, Back to
Nature, and Let’s Play.
Children ages three
through 12 will be able to
take advantage of a variety of activities. Kids can
create a cool craft to take
home when they stop by
their local libraries to register for the summer reading program. How does fun
with a ventriloquist sound?
Join Angela and Friends to
learn about ventriloquism
and good health . If you like
music, listen to Mike Anderson, The Dulcimer Guy, and
enjoy some good stories,

wreck
Charlea Estes
Two were injured when a
car failed to stop at the light
at MO-37 and Old Exeter
Road in Cassville on Sunday.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol
crash report, Amanda L.
Laney, 29, of Exeter was
driving northbound in a
2011 Chevrolet Malibu on
MO-37 when she failed to
stop at a red light. Laney
struck the driver’s side of
a 1988 Subaru Forester
headed westbound on Old
Exeter Road.
The driver of the Subaru,
Lois J. Mangun, 69, of Cassville, was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital
in Cassville for moderate
injuries. Laney was taken by

Hospital in Cassville, also
for moderate injuries.

Arvest 1 Million Meals campaign helps local families
for the summer so children
do not have access to the
school cafeteria for a nutritious breakfast and lunch
and the Backpack Program
has also ended. Children
need the extra food the
local food pantries can provide, thus the reason for the
spring food drive.
There are donation jars
available inside or you can
also donate at the drive
through. A grocery basket
is available in the lobby for
nonperishable food items,
and Arvest workers will
even come out to your car
to gather your donations.
All of the employees at
the Cassville Arvest have
invested a great deal of
time and effort to make this
project a huge success. They
collaborated to put together
some fun activities, including a cookbook. Everyone
pitched in a favorite recipe
and created a tasty cookbook available for $3 each
with the money going to
the 1 Million Meals cam-
paign. It’s a win-win; you
have a variety of recipes to
create delicious meals for
your family and help out a
beneficial local cause at the
same time.
The bank also had a
special event to raise more
money in a fun way. Around
the lobby were flower pots
decorated by the employees.
Their artistic talents created a lighthouse, pig, gumball machine and ladybug,
and each flower pot had a
donation jar in front of it.
Local citizens were encouraged to come in and vote
for their favorite flower pot
by dropping money in the
corresponding jar. Again,
all proceeds went to the
Million Meals Campaign.
On Friday, May 20,
employees dressed in their
favorite Hawaiian outfit,
and manned a sno cone
machine. They were looking forward to a hot sunny
day so they could catch the
eye of the public from the
parking lot; unfortunately,
the rainy day forced them
inside. But, the cheerful,
energetic attitudes weren’t
dampened by the uncooperative weather and they
went ahead and
made
refreshing treats right in the
lobby. Anyone who came in
with a donation received a
free sno cone made especially for them by Phinney.
According to Phinney,
“We like to be involved in
the community and we like
to have fun.” They certainly
did have fun while helping
out the community. “Our
goal was to raise 2,000
meals and as of Friday, May
20, we have reached 200
percent of our goal.”
Million Meals will run
through May 31, so visit the
Cassville Arvest branch at
503 Main Street and pick
up your cookbook, vote
for your favorite flower
pot or bring in a donation.
Have fun with the Arvest
crew while providing much
needed help to feed hungry
families right here in your
Man arrested after Bullets N Bows burglary
Charlea Estes
One man was arrested
on Sunday night after
breaking into Bullets N
Bows on Farm Road 2172
in Cassville and stealing a
vehicle in the parking lot.
Larry W. Polk, 31, of Mexico, Mo., was arrested after
being found at the Cassville
Walmart covered in blood
with the stolen merchandise.
According to the affidavits or probable cause
by Barry County detective Doug Henry, Bullets
N Bows owner Joe Goade
reported that someone had
broken a window in his
store and stolen around
$500 in money and merchandise from inside. The
suspect also stole a vehicle
from the parking lot with a
key found inside the store.
A backpack with Polk’s
personal belongings was
found on the west side of
the building, and he was
located at the Cassville
Walmart with blood on his
clothing. Det. Henry stated
the blood was consistent
with what was found at the
scene on the ground and on
the broken window, as well.
Polk was arrested and
charged with burglary in
the second degree, stealing
of $500 to $25,000 in value,
tampering with a motor
vehicle in the first degree
and property damage in the
second degree.
According to the affi-
davit, Polk is currently on
parole for burglary. He is
being held in the Barry
County Jail in lieu of a
$25,000 cash-only bond
issued by Barry County
Judge Johnnie Cox.

You can count on
Arvest Bank branches to be
involved in their communities, and the local Cassville
office is no exception. Their
latest endeavor is 1 Million
Meals food drive. Every
time you visit the bank,
you have the opportunity
to make a monetary donation or bring nonperishable food items that will all
go to the local food pantry.
Providing five meals for
local families takes just $1.
Cassville Arvest is working hand-in-hand with the
Cassville Community Food
Pantry to ensure an abundance of food is available.
Tonia Phinney, Cassville
Arvest Branch Manager,
shared the reasoning for
this campaign. This project is usually conducted in
the fall, but since there are
many local organizations
involved in food drives for
the holidays it was decided
to move the 1 Million Meals

Schools’ agriculture teacher
and FFA adviser for the past
three years, is being recognized as one of the best young
teachers in the state. Brown
was selected to receive the
National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE)
Outstanding Young Member
award.
Brown said, “I was very
surprised knowing the caliber
of ag. teachers and how much
work they put in. Being chosen as the top in that category
kind of blew me away.”
Each year, the NAAE
selects one young teacher as
their outstanding member.
Brown was encouraged to
apply for the award due to
the improvements she’s made
to the ag. program at Southwest in both classes and the
FFA. Criteria for the award
include teaching methods,
instruction style, hands-on
experience, marketing their
program and teaching philos-
for two to five years to qualify.
Brown began teaching
four years ago after graduating from the University
of Arkansas–Fayetteville in
2012. She took a position
from Kansas, near where she
grew up in Jasper, before taking a position at Southwest
three years ago.
Brown said, “I came to
Southwest knowing the history the school has had. There
had been success in past years,
and the school wanted to get
back to those successes.”
While Southwest had
a strong ag. program for a
number of years, recently, the
program suffered. She added,
“There was a lot of potential
to rebuild what used to be
here and make a difference in
these kids’ lives.”
Since taking over, the
Southwest ag. program had a
new greenhouse built, allowing the ag. classes and FFA to
host a plant sale and learn the
ins and outs of greenhouse
management.
However, Brown considers her biggest accomplishment to relate to community.
She said, “I’m really proud the
students are getting back to
serving the community and
doing service programs. We
started the Angel Tree program back again, as well as
greenhouse sales and handson activities.” Angel Tree

students to write what they

For the first time in recent

but the southeastern corner of the state. It is more
adapted to grasslands and
is most common in western
Missouri. For more information on Missouri turtles,

Purdy names Character Education winners for May
Purdy Elementary Principal
Janet Boys announced the
character education medal
winners for the month of
May. In partnership with elementary counselor Gary
Jurgensen, Purdy’s kindergarten through fourth grade
teachers present a different
character trait each month.
At the end of the month,
each teacher nominates one
student who best exemplifies the trait presented. These
students receive character
medals from Mrs. Boys at a
special assembly.
In May, students focused
on courage. May medal winners are fourth graders Jeremiah Williams and Tegan
Patterson; third graders
Serenity Morris, Ethan Thao
and Dayten Farris; second
graders Alianna Gower,
Lucy Lee and Jason Villa;
first graders Isaias Lopez,
Brianna Garcia and Carlos
Juarez; and kindergartners
Violet Wolf, Lilly Holloway

I was listening to the radio the other day, the station I was tuned into looks for odd news
items. One in particular caught my attention. USC, The University of ‘Southern California,
graduated their oldest graduate on record last week. 96 years old when he received his
original diploma. I would suppose working at a job long enough to qualify for a pension
will be difficult.
In reality it was a big misunderstanding. The gentleman thought he had graduated in
1953. Recently, he wrote the University asking for a copy of his diploma, which he never
received. He was informed he was one class short of graduating. 63 years later he took the
needed class. By the way, his major no longer existed.
63 years of being certain of something and then finding out he fell short. We can
be thankful God is not that way. His commands and guidance are easily understood
and followed; “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his
commandments are not grievous.” 1st John 5:3. We can, by following the inspired words
of the New Testament, know we have completed our Christian course. “According as his
divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” 2nd Peter 1:3.
Don’t “hope” you are complete in God’s sight; “know” by following his words as
revealed in the Holy Scripture. We invite you to join us at The Mill Street Church of Christ
as we follow God’s will in spirit and in truth.

The following items will
be accepted at the curb:

sofas; dressers; loveseats;
recliners; desks; televisions;
bundled guttering; beds,
including hide-a-beds. mattresses and box springs;
wood pallets; waste from
small remodeling or wood
projects with materials cut
into four-foot sections and
stacked; sinks; toilets; cabinets; vanities; carpet cut

This is across the street
from the Barry County

CCSC Recreational
Library works to help Hospice
Last week, Sharon Clute,
the Central Crossing Senior
Center (CCSC) librarian,
and her husband, George,
worked to assist two hospice facilities in Springfield.
They delivered over 150 cassette books on tape for use
in their hospice programs.
CCSC routinely receives
donated durable medical
equipment and sometimes
finds itself with an excess.
This excess, comprising of
wheel chairs, walkers, porta-potties, etc., was loaded
and taken to the hospice
facilities along with the
books on tape. The books
on tape were overages from
the newly-formed lending
library and needed to find
new homes. Together these
contributions will go a long
way to lessen the burden of
those suffering with end-oflife experiences and hopefully brighten their days on
some level.
If you would like to help
in the recreational lending
library or in any other volunteer function at the Central Crossing Senior Center,
please contact the Center’s
administrator Sara Paterson
at (417) 858-6952 to see how
you can be a part of helping
seniors in the local community and sometimes beyond.

The Missouri Department of
Conservation’s (MDC) Free
Fishing Days are June 11 and
12. During Free Fishing Days,
anyone may fish in the ShowMe State without having to
buy a fishing permit, trout
permit or trout park daily tag.
Normal regulations remain in
effect, such as limits on size
and number of fish an angler
may keep. Special permits
may still be required at some
county, city or private fishing
areas. Trespass laws remain in
effect on private property.
Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish, and
Free Fishing Days encourages
people to sample the state’s
abundant fishing opportunities. Missouri has more than a
million acres of surface water,
and most of it provides great
fishing.
For information on Missouri fishing, go anywhere permits are sold, or go online to
huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/fishing.
