Arkansas man arrested for
allegedly holding gun to woman

One man was arrested
for three different charges
after allegedly threatening
to kill a woman. Charles
Duncan Key, 44, of Bentonville, Ark., was arrested
after the incident on 13th
Street in Cassville on May
11.
According to an affidavit of probable cause
from the Cassville Police
Department, Key went to
the victim’s residence and
physically assaulted her.
The statement says that Key
pushed her out of a chair,
causing her to hit her head
on the night stand, picked
her up and punched her in
the head and upper body.
When she tried to escape,
Key allegedly continued the
beating, hitting and kicking
her.
Key then proceeded to
pull out a Browning 9 mm

pistol and held it to her
head, saying that she was
going to die. The victim
escaped and ran across the
street. When she returned,
she discovered the Key had
stolen her cell phone and
dog.
Key is currently being
held in the Barry County
Jail in lieu of a $35,000
cash-only bond.
Seligman Officer Joseph Arnold utilizes one of the new laptops to access their database while on
patrol. The new computers make it more efficient for officers to complete paperwork while in the
field.

Thanks to the Department of Public Safety, officers with the Seligman Police
Department are spending
more time on patrol keeping
citizens safe and less in the
office doing paperwork.
The Seligman Police Department received five new
Dell laptop computers by the
Department of Public Safety
to use in the cruisers on the
streets and at City Hall. The
laptops work on a secure
server so that all tickets written by the officers are automatically stored and available.
Seligman Police Chief
Terry Burgess said, “The
computers allow us to have
access to our database, and
the better accountability for
reporting and tracking information.”
The department has been
using the computers for a few
months, and they are already
seeing the benefits for its officers. Burgess said, “Efficiency-wise, the computers allow
our officers to complete most
of the work from the patrol
vehicle thus requiring less
time in the office.”
Prior to installing the
laptops in the vehicles and
having all of the information stored in their database,
it was much more time consuming to complete the necessary paperwork. Officers
would issues citations while
working on the streets, then
enter that information into a
Microsoft Word document at
City Hall. After that, the paper copies would be stored in
physical files in the office, but
no digital information would
be immediately accessible
within the department.
Burgess said that the
training to get officers up to
speed on the new system was
minimal. He stated, “Training basically consisted of
familiarization with the software which was very userfriendly.”
Since the computers were
provided by the Department
of Public Safety, the city did
not have to invest financially
in the equipment or the software making it a win-win
for both the department and
tax-payers in the city.

Barry County Veterinarian Service in Cassville hired
a new veterinarian who
started this week. Dr. Travis
Pointer, DVM, is a Wheatonnative and joined the staff on
June 1.
Pointer graduated from
Wheaton
high
School
in 2004 before going to
Brigham Young University
in Idaho. After earning his
bachelors in animal science,
he attended the University of
Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Pointer graduated in May before joining
the staff.
When asked why they
decided to hire Pointer, Dr.
Cupps said, “Dr. Pointer
grew up on his family’s dairy
farm southeast of Wheaton.
Our practice has supplied
veterinary services for them
for a long time. During that
time, we saw Travis grow up
and saw what an outstanding young man he developed
into. We also saw the work
ethic he has and know that
he will be an outstanding
veterinarian.”
Pointer feels that he will
be a valuable addition to the
staff by providing a fresh take
on veterinary issues. He said,
“Having recently graduated
from school, I will bring a
different perspective to issues affecting the local area.”

Monett woman seriously
injured in one-car crash

A Monett woman was seriously injured in a singlevehicle crash east of Monett
on Tuesday morning.
Deborah L. Selleck, 45, of
Monett, was driving a 1990
Jeep Cherokee on Farm
Road 1100 three miles east
of Monett. While travelling
north, Sellek ran off the
right side of the road, over
corrected and ran off the
left side before overturning
into a culvert, according to
the Missouri State Highway
Patrol crash report.
The Jeep was totalled
and towed from the scene
by Thomas Towing of
Monett. Sellek was taken to
Cox Hospital in monett by
ambulance for serious injuries. She was not wearing a
seat belt at the time of the
crash.

Barry County mother fights to educate for the safety of her son

For most parents, having
their child play basketball
or football is an every day
normal activity. However,
for one Washburn mother,
a simple injury could threaten her son’s life, and she is
fighting to educate others to
keep him safe.
Kaleb Outhouse, 8, is the
youngest of Alli Gebhardt’s
eight children, and by the
time he was four, she knew
something was wrong. “He
stopped growing, just like
that,” Gebhardt shared.
As Gebhardt visited
doctors and clinics to try
to figure out what was going on with Kaleb’s growth,
she was told repeatedly that
he was just small. She said,
“He is the eighth kid, and he
was the only one who didn’t
grow. Genetically, all of the
kids are the same, they all
have the same mother and
father. Something was obviously wrong.”
Finally, Gebhardt was
referred to an endocrinologist when he was six. After watching Kaleb’s lack of
growth for a year, the doctor tested him for growth
hormone issues. However,
when the tests came back,
they realized that there was
a much bigger issue. Kaleb
was diagnosed with adrenal

wasp. He turned white as a
sheet and started shaking.
He was going into shock.”
Fears like that are a part of
Gebhardt’s everyday life.
She said, “It’s hard because there are certain
things that are just too risky
for him to do. We haven’t
done basketball, but we do
baseball with him wearing the full helmet and face
mask to protect him. It’s
just something most people
don’t think about.”
Now that Kaleb has an
official diagnosis, the family
knows how to manage it, but
additional
complications
come with people being unaware of how to recognize
when Kaleb is in distress and
knowing how to give his lifesaving injections.
Gebhardt said, “When
Kaleb was diagnosed, the
nurse at the school took the
initiative to learn more about
it. So the nurse at Southwest
has the medicine and knows
how to give the injection,
but if she isn’t there, there’s
no one there who can give it
to him. When I’ve asked if
other teachers or staff would
learn how to give it to him,
everyone seems to be afraid.”
Part of that is due to HIPPA regulations that prevent
medical information from
being widely spread due to
patient confidentiality. Gebhardt said, “I told the school,
give me any waiver to sign.
I want you to talk about Kaleb. I want you to know what
he has and what to do if he
goes into crisis.”
Gebhardt went on, “I get
it, needles are scary. I don’t
want to give it to him either,
but it could save his life.”
Other factors weigh on
Gebhardt’s mind, too. For
instance, the South Barry
County Ambulance District
does not keep his particular medication on board the
ambulances. Gebhardt said,
“They told me they would
give him fluids because they
don’t carry his medication.
I’m trying to talk to them
about getting it approved
to have that on the ambulance, too. If he has a crisis,
he needs this medicine.If he
doesn’t receive it, the potential for death is very high.”
She said, “I work an hour
away. I just want to know
that if something happens,
he will be safe.”
There is no way of knowing for sure why Kaleb
cannot produce cortisol
or growth hormones. Gebhardt said, “He took inhaled
steroids for his asthma for
four years, so it could have
caused it or saved him. We
don’t know. The endocrinologist doesn’t know.”
With all of the risk for
Kaleb, Gebhardt is doing everything she can to educate
those around her to help Kaleb if he needs it. She said, “I
teach my other kids to know
how to give the injection and
what to look for. However,
I’m also getting together a

want people to be aware and
know what to do if something happens.”

his body does not produce
cortisol.
Cortisol is released by
the body anytime there is
any stress present. So, when
someone gets injured, sick
or even experiences emotional stress, cortisol is what
prevents the person from
going into shock. Since Kaleb’s body doesn’t produce
cortisol, a seemingly small
event could kill him.
Looking at Kaleb today, he is a normal kid, just
small. He loves to ride his
bike, plays baseball and gets
into a bit of trouble, just like
any kid. However, it takes a
daily routine and an emergency plan to make sure that
the rough and tumble ways
don’t lead to a major crisis.
After discovering the cortisol issue, Gebhardt’s world
changed. Kaleb started on
twice-a-day steroids, a larger
dose in the mornings and a
smaller dose before bed, and
a daily growth hormone to
help him grow. Since going
on the growth hormones,
Kaleb’s gone up one clothing
size, and at eight, he is in a
size five.
Unfortunately, with Kaleb’s condition, there is no
cure. Instead, he has to manage the issue by preventing stress, taking steroids
and keeping an emergency
steroid injection in case he
starts to go into shock.
Gebhardt said, “One

Roaring River to host festival
Roaring River State Park
will be hosting the Heritage
Festival on June 6, 2015 from

Donnie and Teresa (Brattin) Stumpff, of Cassville, recently
reached the milestone of 25 years of marraige. They were married in Cassville on June 1, 1990, at the home of Donnie’s grandparents. They have three children, Dillion Stumpff and wife, Savanna Stumpff, Parker Stumpff and wife, Ashley Stumpff, and
Shania Stumpff, and fiance, Cody Stehlik. Donnie and Teresa
also have four grand children, Bradley, Riley, Adilina and Hadlie.

Knob passed away on May 23,
2015. She was born on April
9, 1932 in Springfield, where
she graduated from Central
High School in 1950. Billie
married her eternal companion Edward H. House on June
29, 1951 in Greene County.
Billie worked as a personal
care technician for Mercy
Hospital in Berryville, Ark.
for 25 years. She loved her job
and caring for her patients
and was presented the Mercy
Signature Service Connection Award for 2014. She was
a member of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints.
Billie was preceded in
death by her parents; her
husband,
Edward;
both
daughters, Alexis and Valerie; a granddaughter; and
one sister. She is survived

She was born August 5,
1921, in Forsyth, the daughter of Samuel Jesse and Trella

13, 1939, in Galena, she was
united in marriage to Earl Edward Newman, who preceded
her in death on December 22,
1984. Also preceding her in
death were one son, Ernest
Newman; one daughter, Patty
Holden; one grandson, Danny Fortner; one great grandson, Michael Asher and three
brothers, Sam Wheeler, Jack

Mary grew up and received her education at Forsyth, where she graduated
from high school. For several
years she was employed as a
machine operator for Jumping Jacks and U.S. Shoes. At
age 85 she retired from WalMart after working there
seventeen years. Some of her
favorite pastimes were quilting, genealogy, crafts, working crossword puzzles and she
loved her newspaper.
Funeral services were held
at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 1,
2015, in Fohn Funeral Home,
Cassville, Missouri. Pastor
Doyle Russell conducted the
services. Burial was in Oak
Hill Cemetery, Cassville.

Denney, 79, of Springfield,
was called home to his Heavenly Father on Saturday, May
30, 2015 while at Cox South
Medical Center in Springfield.
Born on July 1, 1935 in
Berryville, Ark., Leroy was
the son of the late James Roy
Denney and Lula Mae (Clifton) Denney. He graduated
from Purdy High School. Leroy was a member of Central
Assembly of God Church in
Springfield.
On October 30, 1954, he
married Ruth Ann Stewart.
To this union, he was blessed
with five children. Ruth
Ann preceded him in death
in1982. On December 9,
1983, he married Judy Dixon
in Strafford, sharing thirtyone years together.
He is survived by his wife,
Judy, of the home; his children, Debbie Farris, Randy
Denney, Kim Ybarbo and
Carla (Steve) Henson; his
brothers, Kenneth (Shirley )

Jackie R. “Jack” Schlessman, 77, of Purdy, passed
away Friday, May 29, 2015, in
Cox-Monett Hospital.
He was born January 21,
1938, in Anderson, the son
of Leon Emmit and Viola
(Thrutchley) Schlessman. On
May 17, 1957 in Lanagan, he
was united in marriage to
Norma Thurman, who survives. Also surviving are two
sons, Jackie W. Schlessman
and his wife, Jacquelyn, of
Purdy, and Steve Schlessman
and his wife, Dawn, of Wheaton; one daughter, Sharon
Kay Baker and her husband,
Ray, of Orange Park, Fla.;
three brothers, Tom Schlessman and his wife, Bonnie, of
Bentonville, Ark., John Schlessman and his wife, Freda,
of Beaver, Okla., and Junior
Schlessman and his wife,
Neoma, of Anderson; three
sisters, Annabel Warren and
her husband, John, of Kansas
City, Carolyn “Kay” Lewis, of
Moran, Kan. and Mary Lou
Lewis and her husband, Rick,
of Pineville; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-four
great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death
were his parents and three
brothers, Emmit, Lester and
William Schlessman.
Jack received his education
at Pineville, where he graduated from high school. For several years he was employed as
a butcher at the Wheaton IGA
and then owned and operated
The Wheaton Frozen Foods.
He later worked at Efco, Fasco
and then Walmart. He was a
member of East Side Church
of Christ in Monett. He enjoyed playing softball and
coached little league baseball.
Some of his favorite pastimes
were hunting mushrooms,
watching his grandkids play
ball, hunting and fishing. He
also loved watching the Cardinals and westerns on TV.

at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 2,
2015, in McQueen Funeral
Home, Wheaton. Don Deffenbaugh conducted the services. Burial were in Tracy

lights, shepard’s hooks, flowerboxes, ect. be removed
by June 20th 2015 in order for mowing to resume.
This includes anything in the ground or in boxes

helping her neighbors and
friends, sewing, reading and
1940’s vintage music. Other favorite things included
watching Wheel of Fortune,
bird watching, walking with
her Cassville friends and her
daily luncheons with her new
Carnegie Village friends.
Betty’s family and friends
will remember her for her
compassionate and caring
personality. She cared about
what was important to others
and could always see the good
in everyone she met. She always seemed to know when a
loved one would benefit from
a warm smile, a gentle touch
or a loving hug.
As we celebrate our time
with Betty she would ask only
that we share her optimistic
outlook on life and remember
her very favorite saying, “Life

ExEtEr School Board The Potting Shed joins Cassville Chamber of Commerce
MEEting highlightS
The Exeter School Board held their monthly meeting
on May 13. Board President Eric O’Neill called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with six board members in attendance. Nick Guthery, Ashley Fly and Kyle Troutman were
also in attendance.
A motion was made and carried to approve the agenda.
Mr. Taylor gave the High School/Middle School and
Transportation report. High school attendance was at 87
percent above 90 percent attendance and middle school
attendance was at 97 percent above 90 percent attendance.
EOC (End of Course) testing and MAP testing was
completed.
The district’s buses received a 100 percent on bus inspections through the Missouri Highway Patrol during
the annual inspection.
The seniors took their senior trip to San Antonio, Texas, from May 20 through May 23.
The T2 reward was a trip to the YMCA Trout Farm on
May 15.
Exeter R-VI will be hosted the district baseball tournament this year.
Mr. Jordan gave the elementary report. Elementary attendance was at 94 percent above 90 percent attendance.
The After School Program has 168 students enrolled.
Before school there are approximately 50 to 60 students
attending regularly, and there are 60 to 70 students attending regularly after school.
MORENET was contacted regarding the district’s need
to increase the bandwidth currently received. The district
will now receive 40Mbps which is up from the 20Mbps the
district is currently receiving.
To date, there are 90 students enrolled in Summer
School, kindergarten through eighth grades, which will be
held June 1 through June 27.
Nick Guthery, the district’s Vo-Ag instructor, briefed
the Board on information he gathered concerning trap
shooting and archery possibly being offered. A motion
was made and carried to go forward with the implementation of these two programs for the district.
A motion was made and carried to accept the resignations from Donnie Boenker and Deborah Hardwick.
A motion was made and carried to accept the consent
agenda.
Dr. Raney discussed APR with the Board. The district’s
graduation rate was at 97 percent with college entry and
ACT scores projected to go up. Dr. Raney presented the
Board with MSBA policies which were updates due to legislative changes for the first reading. The Board and Dr.
Raney toured the facilities and grounds and discussed the
projects which would be completed this summer.
The next Board meeting is scheduled for June 10.

While Cassville's Satchell Hill fell short in his quest
for a medal at the MSHSAA
Track and Field Championships, the 2015 meet was
a memorable one in many
ways. Hill finished 13th in
the Class 3 Boys Shot on Saturday with a toss of 43-10.25.
A flurry of unprecedented
performances
highlighted
this meet, including new
overall records in both the
boys and girls pole vault. On
Friday, Christopher Nilsen,
of Park Hill, became the first
Missouri high school vaulter
to clear 17 feet. Then, on Saturday, Lee’s Summit West's
Nicole Kallenberger became
Missouri's best female vaulter ever, clearing the bar at
12-10.5.
Hannah Long, of Eureka,
capped her high school career with a national-best
4:40.15, shattering the Missouri overall record by over
four seconds.

Eldon senior Sara Rhine
was an inch short of her own
class record in the Class 3
girls high jump on Friday, but
her 5-6 was good enough to
win her fourth gold medal in
the event.
Finally, in the Class 5 boys
3200 meter run, a trio of runners from Lafayette claimed
the top three places for an

TIM’S TROUT TIPS
The water is murky and
still kind of high and it is
dropping everyday. We did
not flood and all of the campgrounds are fine.
With the murky water,
you can use 2 lb. line and do
fine, but you can use 4 lb. and
do good right now.
I expect the water to drop
everyday for a while. We are
expecting about seven days
of dry weather, that should
really help.
Fishing has been rather
good with a fly rod but not
much dry fly fishing right
now. Nymphing, woolybuggers, glo-balls, san juan
worms, mega worms and
chamois worms are working
great in the higher murky
water, but you'll need to add
a bit of extra weight here and
there. You'll have to look at
each pool and decide, how
much weight you'll need.
Spinners are still working
well, let ‘em sink down close
to the bottom, and reel them
back just fast enough to make
the blade spin; dark colors
seem to be working the best.
Gold spoons are pretty
good. Fish ‘em deep and reel
them back very slow. Lots
of nice trout are caught on
spoons when the water is like
this.
Some nice trout are being caught on crankbaits.
The three inch and smaller
minnow patterns are usually
the best choice, and the rebel
crawfish is always a good
choice.
Larger jigs are working
well; 1/32- 1/8 are good right
now.
Power bait is really good
in this murky water. Eggs and
worms are both good, cheese
yellow, white, flo. yellow and
flo. orange have all been
working very well, just remember to use extra weight.

Missouri Rural Development State Director Janie
Dunning has announced
that the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) is now
accepting applications to
provide technical assistance
to socially-disadvantaged
groups in rural areas. Funding will be made available
through USDA’s SociallyDisadvantaged
Groups
Grant Program (formerly
the Small, Socially-Disadvantaged Producer Grant
Program).
“These grants will help
socially-disadvantaged
business owners develop the
tools and skills they need to
grow their enterprises and
succeed at creating jobs and
expanding economic opportunities in rural areas,”
Vilsack said. “American
agriculture is becoming increasingly diverse in many
ways, with more minorities
and women seeking to enter
the field, as well as greater
diversity in the age of farmers, the size of operations,
in production methods, and
in the types of crops being
grown. All of these forms
of diversity help strengthen
U.S. agriculture for the future.”
The Socially-Disadvantaged Groups Grant Program assists organizations
that provide technical assistance to socially-disadvantaged groups in rural
areas. Examples of technical
assistance are conducting
feasibility studies, developing business and strategic
plans, and providing leadership training.
“Missouri’s rural areas
are home to some varied
and distinct populations.
Some of these populations,
as a result of cultural or language barriers, experience
difficulties in creating and
sustaining businesses, Ms.
Dunning said. “The Socially-Disadvantaged Groups
Grant Program is in place
to alleviate the difficulties
faced by individuals who
want to engage in the economic life of rural areas.
Assisting
disadvantaged
rural residents succeed is
crucial to the strength and
vitality of communities.”
USDA plans to make
up to $3 million in grants
available. The maximum
award under this notice is
$175,000. More information on how to apply can
be found on page 28937 of
the May 20 Federal Register.
Applications submitted by
mail must be postmarked by
July 20, 2015. Electronic applications must be submitted at www.grants.gov no
later than midnight Eastern
Time July 14, 2015.
Eligible applicants include groups of cooperatives, cooperative development centers and
individual
cooperatives
that serve socially-disadvantaged groups. The cooperatives or centers can
be located in any area, but
the groups assisted must be
located in an eligible rural
area. Also, the majority of
the governing body of the
organization must be compromised of individuals
who are members of socially-disadvantaged groups.
USDA Rural Development is encouraging applications for projects in census tracts with poverty rates
of 20 percent or higher. All
grants are awarded through
a national competition.
The program is making a difference in many
rural areas. The program
has provided technical assistance to help refugee
immigrant and minority
farmers improve their productive capacity, increase
revenue, and strengthen
their ability to govern and
manage their cooperative
businesses. Many of the
farmers benefiting from
the project had little or no
access to formal schooling
and had been persecuted
and oppressed for years in
their native land. Farmers
have learned how to manage marketing channels
themselves and have gained
new clients. They have also
increased the level of cooperation among Hispanic,
Korean and African farmer
groups. These groups are
working toward merging
their efforts to form a single
cooperative. The technical
assistance provided enabled

Dylan Edward Andersoncope, of Cassville, pled guilty
to one count of operating a
motorcycle when drivers license not validated for such
operation. One count of exceeding the posted speed limit by 16-19 mph. One count of

one count of failing to equip

Council on Aging is seeking people to serve on the
BCCOA (Barry County
Council on Aging) Board
of Directors, Members of
the BCCOA are people who
are 60 years or older. We are
interested in securing solutions to in-home needs of
the senior citizen. If you are
below the age of 60 years,
and interested in senior
needs, you can serve on the
BCCOA Board of Directors.
The board is made up of seniors who are 60 years and
over and younger people
who are interested in ways
to make the later years more
comfortable. We are active
in-home care, having home
workers keep the home
clean. Medical alert system
for quick response to clients
needs and help secure many
small needs.
The BCCOA receives
requested funds from the
Southwest Missouri Office on Aging and the Barry County Senior Citizen
Services Tax Fund Board,
budgeted are home workers
wages, medical alert systems, and reimbursement
for mileage for home workers.
The BCCOA does their
own budget and payments.
We are in need of representatives in all Senior Citizen Center areas of Barry
County.

A 13-year old Pierce
City boy was seriously injured after crashing an ATV
he was driving on private
property on Thursday.
The boy was driving a
Yamaha Big Bear 400 too
fast for the conditions six
miles south of Pierce City
on private property, and he
slid into a trailer, according
to a crash report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The boy was transported
by ambulance to Freeman
West Hospital in Joplin. He
was not wearing a safety device at the time of the crash.

month the middle school
core class teachers nominate
one student from each grade
level, fifth through eighth.
The fifth grade Student of
the Month for April is Dakota Farris. Fifth grade teachers
Cheryl Ulmer and Michele
Taylor noted, “Dakota was
chosen as fifth grade’s Student of the Month because
always completes his work in
a timely manner. He works
very hard and gives his best.
Dakota is also a very well-behaved student. He is friendly
to other students and faculty.
When told to do something
Dakota listens well. Lastly,
Dakota is wonderful to have
in class because he is helpful and volunteers to give his
response to questions. It has
been a pleasure having Dakota in our class.”
Jealouise Durossette received the award in sixth
grade. Sixth Grade teacher
Barbara Warnick observed
of this month’s winner, “Jealouise is new this year and has
fit right into the sixth grade
class. She is friendly and gets
along well with others. Jealouise comes to class prepared
and is respectful. She is fun
to have in class. She is always
willing participate and tries
hard on every task. Jealouise
has been a great addition to
our sixth grade class.”
Elizabeth Hoffman represented the seventh grade
in April. Instructor Heather
Romine recommended her
because, “Elizabeth is a very
hard-working young lady.
She will be very successful
in life because of her strong
work ethic.”
Mrs. Romine also explained the selection of
eighth grade student Alex
Serrano. “Alex is a sweet
young lady. She is kind to all
and is a great student.”

banquet. Members and their
families enjoyed the night
recognizing one another’s accomplishments.
After the opening ceremonies and appetizing meal,
Shon Bishop made a remarkable speech about how agriculture is all around us. There
were a lot of awards handed
out, including star greenhands Maycee Blake and Caeton Horn, outstanding junior
Austin Tripp, outstanding
senior Brook Sorensen, and
the Dekalb agricultural accomplishment award going
to Dylan Henry.
The contest teams were
also recognized for their hard
work:
• The FFA knowledge
team: Maycee Blake, Chloe
Carpenter, Caeton Horn and
Jozee Sorenson.
• The Livestock team:

The Mercy Hospital Auxiliary recently donated two Shark Navigator Cordless Vacuums to the
Environmental Services Department at Mercy Hospital Cassville. Funds were raised throughout
the year and donated to purchase the vacuums for housekeepers to use in high-traffic patient
areas where cords could be a trip hazard. The Auxiliary is funded through the Gift Shop at the
hospital as well as hosting many fundraisers during the year.

The U.S. Department of
Agriculture Rural Development has announced a decrease in the home mortgage
interest rate for its Single Family Housing Direct Home Loan
program. “The low interest
rate makes it a great time for
eligible families to purchase a
home through the direct loan
program,” said Madeleine

Effective May 1, 2015, the
interest rate is only 3.125%
for home mortgages. Under
this program, homeownership opportunities featuring

Barry County Courts send six to prison in the month of May
• Jesus Baidon, 25, of
Monett, pled guilty to trespassing in the first degree. Baidon
was sentenced to 10 days in
jail with credit for time already
served.
While on a separate call on
August 11, 2014, officers with
the Monett Police Department
encountered Baidon walking
with an open container of vodka. When placed under arrest,
Baidon attempted to kick out
windows of the police car and
also assaulted officers as he was
taken to jail.
• Cam Ray Banks, 45, pled
guilty to resisting arrest. Banks
was sentenced to three years
incarceration with the Department of Corrections.
On May 4, 2014, officers
with the Monett Police Department observed Banks walking
at night in an area where there
had been recent break-ins.
When they tried to make contact with him, they noticed a
screw driver sticking out of his
pocket which he tried to grab.
Banks then gave a false
name to the officers, someone who had a totally different physical description than
Banks. When Banks heard
that he did not match the description of the person who’s
name he gave, he ran from officers. Banks had to be ordered
down at gunpoint after officers
chased him approximately
2/10 mile. Banks had felony
warrants out in Lawrence and
Johnson Counties.
• Meleico Perez Barrientos, 33, of Wheaton, pled
guilty to DWI-Alcohol as an
aggravated offender. Barrientos was sentenced to five years
incarceration in which he will
serve four months shock incarceration.
Barrientos was found unconscious in a vehicle with the
key in the ignition and the motor running on September 20,
2014. When the Barry County
Sheriff’s Department responded, Barrientos could not stand
up straight and he said he was
too intoxicated to perform a
sobriety test. Barrientos had
multiple prior convictions for
driving while intoxicated.
• Jerry Manuel Beck, 41,
of Golden, pled guilty to possession of a chemical with the
intent to manufacture a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance
in 2014, and he was placed on
probation. Beck’s probation
has since been revoked and he
is to serve a five year incarceration sentence.
In September 2012, officers
with the Southwest Missouri
Drug Task Force and Barry
County Sheriff’s Department
investigated an anonymous tip
that there was methamphetamine being manufactured

possession of a controlled
substance when officers found
him a syringe filled with methamphetamine in his vehicle in
October 2012.
• Kashina Lynn Bergesch,
30, of Monett, originally pled
guilty to possession for a controlled substance in 2013. After
violating the conditions of her
probation, Bergesch is to serve
120 days with the Department
of Corrections in for post-conviction drug treatment.
On May 16, 2013, Bergesch
was booked in jail for third degree assault. During a search,
Bergesch was found to have a
baggie of methamphetamine
concealed in her sock.
• Julie Ann Burns, 43, of
Cassville, pled guilty to possession of a controlled substance.
Burns was given a suspended
imposition of sentencing and
five years supervised probation.
On October 28, 2011,
Burns was found to be in possession of a baggie of methamphetamine by the Barry
County Sheriff’s Department
on Carnes in Wheaton.
Burns is to serve probation
until May 18, 2020.
• Curtis Alan Collins, 29,
of Aurora, pled guilty to possession of a controlled substance. Collins was given a
suspended imposition of sentencing with five years supervised probation.
On December 3, 2014, Col-
lins was the passenger in a vehicle stopped by the Missouri
State Highway Patrol for not
having a rear bumper. Collins
had a methamphetamine pipe
and a baggie of methamphetamine in his sock.
Collins is to serve probation until May 19, 2020.
• Michael S. Coones, 36, of
Aurora, pled guilty to possession of a controlled substance.
Coones was given a suspended
execution of a seven year incarceration sentence and five
years supervised probation.
On December 7, 2013, the
Barry County Sheriff’s Department found Coones to be in
possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia
on Farm Road 1162 in Eagle
Rock.
Coones is to serve probation until May 18, 2020.
• Sal Alex Cruz, of Monett,
pled guilty to stealing leased or
rented property. Cruz was sentenced to two years incarceration.
On July 29, 2014, Crux
entered into a lease agreement with Payless Rental and
Sales in Monett for a television
and entertainment center. He
stopped paying for the items
and also failed to return them.
• George Daniels, 43, of
Monett, pled guilty to endangering the welfare of a child
in the first degree. Daniels was
given a suspended execution of
a thee years incarceration sentence with three years supervised probation.
The Monett Police Department responded to a report
of a domestic disturbance on
October 14, 2013, on North
Kyler. When officers arrived,

• Jeffrey A. Erwin, 29, of
Monett, pled guilty to endangering the welfare of a child.
Erwin was given a suspended
imposition of sentencing, two
years unsupervised probation
and he must complete anger
management.
Erwin spanked a sevenyear old with a belt to the point
of leaving bruises when the
child did not finish dinner during visitation.
Erwin is to serve probation
until May 18, 2017.
• Ricky W. Goodine, 57,
of Monett, pled guilty to two
counts of distribution of a controlled substance. Goodine
was sentenced to six ears incarceration of which he will serve
120 days of shock time.
On April 5, 2013, the Missouri State Highway Patrol
executed a search warrant on
4th Street in Monett. Goodine
opened a safe in his home that
contained 56 grams of marijuana in individual baggies
of around seven grams each.
There was also a pill bottle
with 88 oxycodone pills and
a note with the street value
of prescription drugs on it.
Goodine admitted to selling
the marijuana but not the oxycodone pills.
• Darrell Allen Hopper,
51, pled guilty to theft/stealing of property valued at $500
to $25,000. Hopper received a
suspended imposition of sentencing, 100 hours of community service, 30 days of shock
time with credit for 14 days
already served, and five years
supervised probation.
In March 2013, Hopper
and another man were found
to have stolen tires from Ball
and Prier in Golden. The tires

they heard witness statements
that Daniels kicked in the back
door to the his girlfriend’s
house where she was with her
three children and threatened
them with a knife. One child
received small cuts from the
knife, another child was reportedly choked with a jacket
by Daniels.
Daniels is to serve probation until May 5, 2018.
• Timmy R. Davis, 46, pled
guilty to failure to return leased
or rented property in 2011 and
burglary in the second degree
in May 2015. His initial probation was revoked and he is to
serve two years for the failure to
return rented property charge
and three years incarceration
for the burglary charge.
In 2008, Davis rented a
television, Nintendo Wii, love
seat, sofa and end tables from
Payless Rentals in monett. He
pawned the Wii and failed to
return the rest of the property.
He was placed on probation
for that charge in 2011.
Then, on September 15,
2013, Davis entered into an address on State Highway CC in
Exeter unlawfully.
• Brenda Del Toro, 54, of
Monett, pled guilty to passing
a bad check of $500 or more.
Del Toro received a suspended
execution of a four-year incarceration sentence and five
Del Toro is to serve probation until May 18, 2020.
• Christopher L. Drezinski, 34, of Exeter, pled guilty to
possession of a controlled substance. Drezinski was given a
suspended execution of a three
year incarceration sentence.
On August 9, 2013, the
Missouri State Highway Patrol
stopped Drezinski for expired
registration. When he was being questioned, the trooper observed a hypodermic needle in
the vehicle that Drezinski said

• James Leonard Kramer,
62, of Verona, made an Alford plea to unlawful use of
a weapon, unlawful possession of an illegal weapon and
eight counts of receiving stolen
property. Kramer received a
suspended execution of a four
year incarceration sentence,
120 days shock time in the
Barry County Jail with credit
for time already served and five
On May 26, 2014, Kramer
pointed a shotgun at Barry
County deputies. The shotgun
was found to have a barrel less
than 18 inches long..
After an investigation, the
Barry County Sheriff’s Department found Kramer to be in
the possession of various property stolen from the county,
including lawn mowers, furniture tools and more. Kramer’s
son and his son’s girlfriend, Jason Kramer and Amanda Shelby, stole the goods, according
to a statement made by Shelby.
Kramer is to serve probation until May 22, 2020.
• Jim Lamastus, Monett,
pled guilty to DWI-Alcohol as
a persistent offender. Lamastus
was given a suspended execution of a thee year incarceration sentence and five years
On July 7, 2013, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Lamastus after he was
driving without registration.
Once stopped, Lamastus was
intoxicated and did not have
a drivers’ license. He had two
prior driving while intoxicated
convictions.
Lamastus is to serve probation until May 18, 2020.
• Darryl Eugene Lands,
34, of Aurora, pled guilty to
burglary in the second degree
and theft/stealing of $500 to
$25,000. Lands was given a
suspended execution of a fiveyear incarceration sentence
and five years supervised probation.
On March 5, 2015, Lands
and Melissa Kay Holmans
forced entry into a home on
state Highway C in Purdy as
well as a storage building. They
stole a laptop, an XBox 360,
DVDs, a teleevision, cable box,
tools and a tablet.
Later, Purdy Police Chief
Jackie Lowe went to investigate
suspicious persons in the area.
He identified both of them and
inspected the property. They
said it was their property, and
Lowe had not received any
reports of stolen property, so
they were allowed to leave.
Some of the property was left
at the Purdy School and returned to the owner, but other
items remained missing.
Lands is to serve probation
until May 18, 2020.
• Lee Ann Mahurin, 34,
pled guilty to theft/stealing of
less than $500. Mahurin was
given a suspended imposition
of sentencing and two years
unsupervised probation.
In May 2012, Mahurin stole
two wedding band sets from a
residence on Elkins Street in
Wheaton.
Mahurin is to serve probation until May 18, 2017.
• Jose E. Martinez, Reeds,
pled guilty to DWI-drug intoxication as an aggravated
offender. Martinez received
a suspended execution of a
three-year incarceration sentence and five years supervised
probation.
On May 13, 2011, the Missouri State Highway Patrol
responded to a single-vehicle
crash. Martinez was the driver
and had crashed a car down a
steep embankment and against
a large tree on Missouri 112.
The driver was clearly intoxicated and a blood sample was
drawn at the scene before
he was taken to the hospital.
There was also a young male in
the car at the time of the crash.
Martinez is to serve probation until May 27, 2020.
• Regina A. McFarland,
37, of Cassville, pled guilty to
DWI-Alcohol as a persistent
offender. McFarland was given
a suspended execution of a
three-year incarceration sentence, 480 hours of community
service, must complete CRISP
and five years supervised probation.
On July 25, 2014, McFarland was pulled over by the
Monett Police Department
leaving Bumper’s Bar. McFarland failed multiple field sobriety tests and had an open can
of beer in her car. McFarland

possession of marijuana. McIntyre received a suspended

McIntyre is to serve probation until May 18, 2017.
• Brandon John Mestas, of
Purdy, pled guilty to property
damage in the second degree.
Mestas received a suspended
two years unsupervised probation.
On July 7, 2013, Mestas
threw rocks at the Exeter High
School building and broke
the glass out of two windows,
damaging the roof. Repair
was expected to cost around
$5,700.
Mestas is to serve probation
until May 18, 2017.
• Bobbie L. Moss, of Joplin,
pled guilty to DWI-Alcohol
as a persistent offender. Moss
received a suspended imposition of sentencing, two years
unsupervised probation and
must finish a substance abuse
program in Joplin.
Moss was arrested at a
Missouri State Highway Patrol DWI checkpoint in Barry
County on Missouri 37 south
of County Road 1090.Moss
had two prior DWI convictions.
Moss is to serve probation
until May 19, 2017.
• James D. Riley, 26, of
Monett, pled guilty to domestic assault in the second degree.
Riley received a suspended execution of a four year incarceration sentence and five years

When officers arrived at the
residence on 6th Street, the
victim was bloody and her face
appeared swollen. According
to the report, a person who
also resides at the residence,
the victim could only say
“help.” The victim and her boyfriend, Riley, had been arguing
and hit her in the face.
Riley will serve probation
until May 5, 2020.
• John Robert Rounds, 41,
of Cassville, pled guilty to three
counts of distribution of a controlled substance. Rounds received a suspended execution
of a six-year incarceration sentence and six years supervised
probation.
On January 2, 2013, the
Southwest Missouri Drug
Task Force conducted an undercover investigation and a
confidential informant purchased 1/2 gram of methamphetamine from Rounds at an
address on Farm Road 2180.
Rounds is to serve probation until May 29, 2021.
• Carl Douglas Scates,
36, of Seligman, pled guilty to
possession of a controlled substance. Scates received a suspended imposition of sentencing and five years supervised
probation.

Lay truck and stole chips and
snacks.
On September 6, 2014,
the City of Monett and Herd’s
Truck Stop and Convenience
Store were burglarized. Schiffner admitted to stealing beer
from the store. The Golf
Course also had $250 stolen.
Schiffner is to serve probation until May 18, 2018.
• Casey Don Sherrin, 29,
pled guilty to leaving the scene
of a motor vehicle accident
and theft/stealing of $500 to
$25,000. Sherrin received a suspended imposition of sentencing and four years supervised
probation for the accident
charge. He received a suspended execution of a three-year incarceration sentence and four

In June 2014, Sherrin
knowingly left the scene of
an accident on 8th Street in
Cassville. Then, Sherrin stole
a purse out of a vehicle in the
Walmart parking lot in Cassville.

• William David White,
45, of Marionville, pled guilty
to possession of controlled.
White received a suspended
four years supervised probation.
On December 29, 2014,
White was stopped by the
Missouri State Highway Patrol for having a nonworking
headlight. White had an active
warrant and a search yielded
methamphetamine.
White is to serve probation
until May 19, 2019.
• Michael W. Wormington, 48, of Cassville, pled guilty
to DWI-Alcohol as a persistent offender. Wormington received a suspended execution
of a three-year incarceration
sentence and five years supervised probation.
On April 20, 2014, Wormington hit another vehicle.
Wormington was found to be
driving while intoxicated.
Wormington is to serve
probation until May 18, 2019.
