EVENT OVERVIEW
South Australia will once again welcome the best cyclists from around the world to the Santos Tour Down
Under from 16-24 January 2016. First held in 1999 the Santos Tour Down Under has grown year on year to
become the biggest cycling festival in the southern hemisphere.
The Santos Tour Down Under is an annual event
seeing professional cyclists traverse some of
South Australia’s most picturesque beaches,
world-famous wine regions and charming
country towns before the big finale where they
race it out on the streets of Adelaide.
The event is hosted over nine days and
attracts thousands of visitors from around
Australia and the world, with spectators
enjoying the electrifying atmosphere of the
race as it makes its way around the state.
In 2008 the event joined the prestigious
UCI WorldTour and was the first event outside
cycling’s traditional home of Europe to do so.
The UCI WorldTour brings together the most
prestigious teams and the best riders in the
world to compete in the best races.
Some of the very best in road cycling have
competed at the Santos Tour Down Under
during its eighteen-year history such as Cadel
Evans, Marcel Kittel, Andy Schleck and Andre
Greipel. They have all come to South Australia
to conquer the roads of the Santos Tour Down
Under. In 2016 top cyclists will once again
be back to stamp their authority on the new
season.
In 2015 the Santos Tour Down Under
injected a record $47.9 million into the South
Australian economy. The annual cycling event
attracted 786,022 spectators, with 37,370
visiting the state specifically to attend the
event providing 614 equivalent full time jobs.
The 2016 Santos Tour Down Under is looking
to be just as exciting with testing new stages
and a range of associated events.
The Bupa Challenge Tour presented by
The Advertiser is the perfect way to be a part
of the Santos Tour Down Under. Individuals,
social, corporate and sporting groups
have the opportunity to ride a stage of the
UCI WorldTour event on the same day as the
professional teams. More than 6,000 people
took part in the 2015 Bupa Challenge Tour.
This year the Bupa Challenge Tour will be
held on Friday, 22 January with the start in
trendy Norwood and finishing at the coastal
town of Victor Harbor. Participants have
the option of completing the full stage of
142.5km or can choose to start in Echunga,
Strathalbyn and Goolwa depending on their
abilities.
The Legends’ Night Dinner on Saturday
23 January has become a tradition for
fans where they can rub shoulders with the
cycling elite at a gala event at the Adelaide
Convention Centre. Guests are entertained
by expert commentators Phil Liggett and
Paul Sherwen as they interview special
guests. Previous star attendees include
Greg LeMond, Sir Chris Hoy, Cadel Evans,
Eddy Merckx and Santos Tour Down Under
ambassador Anna Meares.
The Santos Tour Down Under is an action
packed nine days of world class cycling
featuring exhilarating stages along with
a vast range of events and experiences to
entertain, from participation rides to street
parties and more!

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER
OCHRE LEADER
The Santos Tour Down Under Ochre Leader’s Jersey is awarded to the

throughout the race. Tour de France champion Cadel Evans won the
Santos Tour Down Under’s Subaru King of the Mountain Jersey in 2002,
