Dear Readers,

Our lives present us with many opportunities to learn, and one
of the wonderful things about El Gouna is the many ways it
expands our horizons by bringing us into encounters with people
and the environment that are sure to teach and change us.
We feature several such encounters in this issue. On page 14
we cover Swiss biologist Angela Ziltener’s work with Red Sea
dolphins and her efforts to bring people into contact with them
in constructive and sustainable ways. Hands-on educational
encounters like these are augmented by the efforts of the
town’s high quality institutions of learning. Recently Technische
Universität Berlin hosted a workshop where local residents,
high government officials, and representatives of a wide range
of companies and institutions brainstormed together about
El Gouna’s future (p. 38). At the secondary level, El Gouna
International School demonstrates its commitment to education
by organizing internships for its older students (p. 20).
Over the last seven years I have gone through my own learning
process as a writer and editor for El Gouna Magazine. I have
watched with pride as the community and magazine blossomed
in good times and persevered through challenges. And now the
bittersweet day has come for me to move on. My time with this
magazine has given me insight and experience in international
travel writing that will prove invaluable as I take on new
horizons of my own, and I thank the team that has worked with
me to put out a publication devoted to this amazing town.

Reading for pleasure, reading to learn

12.21
Dustin Thomason, The Dial Press, 2012
The co-author of bestselling novel The Rule of Four returns in
2012 with a thriller that capitalizes on the 2012 phenomenon,
an umbrella term for various beliefs that the world will come to
an end or experience a dramatic transformation on December
21, 2012. This date is believed by some to be the end date of the
Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar, an ancient dating system
used by a number of people groups, most notably the Maya.
Thomason’s book opens with a scene dating back over a thousand
years in which a Maya scribe, living in a time of great drought
and suffering, hides in a cave to write a tale in his own blood. The
codex he writes will survive unseen for a millennium, only to be
discovered as the ancient calendar reaches its end. The story
then takes a dizzying leap forward to present-day Venice Beach,
California, where Dr. Gabriel Stanton lives a researcher’s life,
devoting his days to the study of prion diseases—sicknesses like
mad cow disease in which malformed proteins enter and destroy
the brains of human beings and other mammals. We are also
introduced to Chel Manu, a Guatemalan-born scholar whose
area of expertise is the ancient Maya people from whom she is
descended.
The pace of the novel quickens when Stanton learns that a
mysterious patient in a nearby hospital suffers from (and soon
dies of) a previously-unknown form of prion disease. His path soon
crosses that of Manu, who is given a rare Maya manuscript by an
antiquities dealer on the run from the authorities. The new disease
quickly spreads, decimating the population of Los Angeles, and
Stanton frantically races to find a cure while Manu seeks to
untangle the mysteries of the ancient book, which may hold the
truth about the origins of the epidemic that threatens humanity.
The remainder of 12.21 takes place against this apocalyptic
backdrop, which might be more impressive in film than it is in
Thomason’s brief descriptions of the chaos (perhaps there are
plans for a movie?). Stanton and Manu eventually manage to
escape quarantined L.A. and return to Manu’s childhood village in
Guatemala in search of a cure to stem the rising tide of fatalities.
Manu contracts the disease, and the heightened tension will
keep readers going through the climax and on to the end, despite
the weaknesses of plot and characterization that begin to show
themselves once the excitement slows. Thomason has potential,
and 12.21 is gripping enough that I’ll pick up his next book, though
I hope it contains characters a little easier to bond with and an
ending that feels a little less forced.

Winter is upon us, and sometimes an absorbing book is the best distraction from
the stress and busyness of life and work. Dustin Thomason’s new medical thriller
entitled 12.21 is the perfect page turner to pass a lazy afternoon or an evening
home alone. If you have less time to spend, try Kee Malesky’s Learn Something
New Every Day, a collection of 365 fascinating facts. Read one a day over the course
of the year, and you’ll be a better educated person at the end of 2013. Our third pick,
Beyond the Rainbow Bridge, is a short read designed to give parents a better grasp
of their young child’s developmental and educational needs.
All books reviewed are available from www.amazon.com
Learn Something New Every Day: 365
Facts to Fulfill Your Life
Kee Malesky, John Wiley and Sons, 2012
It will come as no surprise that the author of this compendium of
fabulous facts is a librarian. Kee Malesky is the longest-serving
staff librarian on the fact-checking and research staff at National
Public Radio (NPR), a highly-regarded radio station in the United
States. Her first book, All Facts Considered, took its name from
one of NPR’s most popular programs, “All Things Considered,”
and Learn Something New Every Day is as satisfying as Malesky’s
earlier work.
The 365 fascinating factoids in the book are divided into 12
chapters, one for each month of the year. If you want a New
Year’s resolution you can feel good about that doesn’t involve
the pain of the gym, commit to exercising your brain by reading
this book over the course of 2013. The only challenge will be
limiting yourself to one entry per day. Did you know that the
oldest mammal fossil discovered is that of the Adelobasileus
cromptoni, a “tiny, scansorial (climbing), insect-eating shrewlike
creature” (p. 85)? And who knew that the Cheyenne idiom to
describe tummy rumbling is “my tapeworm can almost talk to
itself” (p. 224)? I would never have guessed that the Amazon is
uncrossed by a single bridge (p. 88), or that a horrible instrument
called a “Scold’s Bridle” was placed over the head of outspoken
women in England and Scotland from the 16th – 19th century.
We’ve come a long way, baby.
The wide range of information conveyed in Learn Something New
Every Day will delight people of all interests and walks of life, and
the book serves as a reminder of how pleasurable learning can
be. “Read,” urges Malesky in her introduction. “Read—on any
platform and in any format: on paper, on an electronic device, on
clay tablets or papyrus scrolls. Read about things that already
fascinate you and things that you know nothing about. Reread your
favorite books or those you hated in high school. Compare, muse,
evaluate, consider, analyze, ponder; keep your mind occupied.
Read because it’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s a joy to find out something
you didn’t know before.”

Beyond the Rainbow Bridge: Nurturing
Our Children from Birth to Seven
Barbara J. Patterson and Pamela Bradley,
Michaelmas Press, 2000
Waldorf education, which is based on the pedagogical philosophy
of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, is used in a number of
schools across the world. It emphasizes cultivating children’s
creativity along with their intellect, with the goal of helping
them develop into responsible, thoughtful individuals who are
integrated into society while fulfilling their own unique destiny.
Beyond the Rainbow Bridge was published over a decade ago
and has received several awards, including an iParenting Media
Award. It has been translated into half a dozen languages and
continues to be popular not only with those whose children attend
Waldorf schools, but with parents and educators who seek to
instill values, learning, and structure into children while fostering
their creativity.
Beyond the Rainbow Bridge is the fruit of cooperation between
Pamela Bradley, a mother whose children attended a Waldorf
school, and Barbara J. Patterson, one of her children’s teachers.
The two women sought to write a book that would serve as
a resource for parents helping transition their children from
birth into larger society at age seven. The book is divided into
six chapters, with a sizable appendix that contains in-depth
information about Waldorf education.
This book is refreshingly different from many of the dominant
resources on parenting in its focus on the child’s creativity and the
way parents can construct an environment that provides children
with a balance between structure, boundaries, and freedom.
The chapters on play and creative discipline are particularly
eye-opening. In the former, Bradley and Patterson not only talk
about the stages of development in children’s play; they also give
concrete ideas for the types of toys that help stimulate children’s
natural curiosity and interest. The chapter on creative discipline
promotes the positive modeling of appropriate behavior rather
than a negative focus on inappropriate behavior, and it helps
parents give children clear messages and to limit choices to the
extent suited to various ages.
The calm, happy, creative world sketched out in Beyond the
Rainbow Bridge may seem like a fantasy land to people in the
trenches of parenting in a fast-paced, consumer-focused modern
world. But the book serves as an encouragement to slow down a
bit, to simplify, and to savor the precious early years of childhood
that pass all too quickly. //

Oriental Grill
Egyptian culinary initiation

Working one’s way through the Oriental Grill’s menu provides a delicious
introduction to Egyptian cuisine. This mouthwatering experience is
interesting without becoming challenging thanks to an approachable

The Oriental Grill restaurant is at home
amid the domes and arches of the old
town of El Kafr, a charming island at
the heart of El Gouna characterized by
its Nubian architecture and framed by
turquoise lagoons. Across a bridge that
links El Kafr to the mainland is Oriental
Grill, where the tantalizing aroma of
freshly baked bread emanating from the
outdoor wood-fired oven draws gourmets
from far and wide.
A multileveled terrace offers a delightful
view of the peaceful waterway that runs
along the restaurant, and a few tables
are sheltered from the elements under
a tamr henna (woven branches) gazebo.
Potted bougainvilleas provide a touch of
color, while white table cloths rippling in
the light breeze hint at a more upscale
dining experience. The indoor dining room
is perfect for chilly winter nights; it is
decorated in beige and light blue tones with
Egyptian blown-glass chandeliers hanging
from the ceiling and colorful Nubian woven
bread baskets gracing the walls.
The establishment offers not only an
initiation into Egyptian architecture
and style, but most importantly—and
deliciously—into the local cuisine. An
assortment of cold mezzeh (mixed
appetizers) is brought for the table to
share. Baladi salad consists of tomato,
cucumber, carrot, green cabbage, rocket
leaves, and parsley. Fool is made of brown
beans with tomato, red pepper, onion,
garlic, and spices. Tchouchka is a mixture
of tomato, red pepper, garlic, parsley,

coriander, and cumin. Other dips include
tahina, a sesame paste emulsified with
lemon juice and vinegar; hummus made
of chickpeas; babaganoush with crushed
eggplant; as well as white cheese mixed
with small tomato cubes. They are all
served with freshly baked pita bread as
well as crispy thin bread. One would do
well not to indulge unrestrainedly in the
starters, seeing that the mains are equally
copious and well worth savoring.
Chef Armea Keroles, who hails from
Upper Egypt, prepared samples from
the best of the menu for us. As the
establishment’s name suggests, foods
barbecued on the charcoal grill are the
house’s specialty; the grill occupies a
central position, and patrons can watch
their meals being made. We started with
a filet of Red Sea grouper served with rice
and vermicelli. Grilled shrimp are also
on the menu. Tomato and chili hot sauce,
yogurt with garlic and parsley, as well as
pickled vegetables were placed on the
table as condiments.
We continued with mixed grill made of
chicken kebab, veal kebab, and kofta.
The latter was an agreeable surprise for
me: the minced meat grilled on a skewer
was moist and tasty and, although made
of minced beef supplemented with lamb
fat, it didn’t come with the unpleasant
mutton smell and taste that are often
characteristic of kofta. The dish was
served with grilled eggplant, zucchini,
and bell pepper. Royal mixed grill is also
available and features veal chops, lamb
chops, beef fillet, and boneless quail.

The Oriental Grill restaurant is ideal for
sampling authentic Egyptian cuisine in
an approachable environment. Staff is
knowledgeable about the bill of fare,
and the chef welcomes questions from
patrons watching him at work. The food
is tasty and interesting without being
challenging, and the atmosphere is
casual yet polished with waiters promptly
changing ashtrays before each course.
The assortment of mezzeh is
complimentary when ordering a main
course; it comes at a cost of 30 LE
per person when served alone. With
chargrilled items between 65 and 120 LE,
and oven baked items between 50 and
120 LE, Oriental Grill falls in the upper
midrange price spectrum; 10% tax and
12% service charge are not included in
menu prices and are added to the bill.
Local beer costs 20 LE and local wine
between 130 and 180 LE per bottle. A
10% discount is granted to homeowner
cardholders. //

the form of beef fillet served rare and
medium-rare, as ordered, and very tender.
The veal chops that came along were a
favorite around our table. Veal liver and
rabbit are also to be had. All meats served
at Oriental Grill are Egyptian. Specific
marinades are designed for each dish and
used to marinate the meat before cooking
and for basting on the grill, explained
Chef Claude Lagarrigue, who heads all
of Badaboum’s restaurants in El Gouna
(which also include Le Deauville, La
Scala, and Maison Thomas).
Last but not least, we sampled Oriental
Grill’s tagens, stews baked in clay pots.
Okra (lady fingers) in tomato sauce is the
only vegetarian option on the menu, but
the moussaka can also be ordered without
meat. Oxtail with zucchini and potato in a
rich sauce, veal flavored with a fragrant
spice blend containing star anise and
curcuma, Greek-style moussaka with

minced meat and eggplant topped by
gratinated béchamel, and dawood basha
meatballs in oily red sauce redolent of
cumin and coriander were all delicious
discoveries that left us ready to burst and
begging for mercy.
We still worked our way through the
dessert menu that featured baklava
made of phyllo pastry, ground walnuts,
and sugar syrup; mhalabeyah, which is
a creamy panna cotta; as well as roz be’
laban, a rice pudding flavored with orange
blossom, candied bitter orange, and
cinnamon. One of my dining companions
complimented the desserts, saying that
she enjoyed them because they were
not excessively sweet. My other dining
companion, a proud Lebanese who knows
his Oriental food, quizzed Chef Armea
about ingredients and cooking techniques
before rendering his verdict: “he’s not
bad,” which is as good as it gets.

An honorary Belgian consulate for the Red Sea
governorate opens in El Gouna thanks to prominent
resident Christophe Lambrecht, who embarked on
a new role as honorary consul of Belgium.
Christophe Lambrecht, a long-time
member of the El Gouna community
and chief operating officer of The Three
Corners hotel chain, has taken on a new
role to assist the Belgian population
and visitors to the area. On September
13, 2012, he officially became honorary
consul of Belgium for the Red Sea region.
Unlike career diplomats sent on missions
by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part
of the diplomatic corps, honorary consuls
are recruited locally. They are chosen for
their integration in the host country, their
position within the local community, and
their prestigious reputation.
“Christophe has been here for a long
time and is well esteemed within the
community,” explained Belgian Consul
Benedicte Versailles, who came with a
delegation from the Belgian embassy
in Cairo for the opening of the honorary
consulate in El Gouna. “He is doing us
a favor by accepting this post, because
12 | El Gouna Magazine
we will rely on his contacts and skills.”
An honorary consul functions as an
extension of the embassy, carrying out
administrative work and assisting the
Belgian community.
In practice, this entails tasks such as
recording people in the population registry
of Belgium, issuing temporary passports
in the event documents are lost or stolen,
legalizing documents by authenticating
signatures, and assisting with legal
problems that may arise. Belgian citizens
residing abroad are encouraged to
register with their respective consulate as
additional benefits are available to them,
such as inclusion in emergency planning,
issuance of nationality and residence
certificates, and the ability to vote in
federal elections. Honorary consuls
also play an economic role through
their network of contacts by helping to
locate and contact people the Belgian
representation may want to work with.
Christophe Lambrecht has long been
an asset to the Belgian community,
and he has worked to further Belgian
interests. “We chose him because he is
a successful Belgian entrepreneur with
an outstanding reputation,” said Consul
Versailles. “As a hotelier, he is used to
assisting visitors, which is a bonus.” The
assignment is open-ended, unlike that
of career diplomats who rotate from one
destination to the next. “It is an honor
for me to serve my country and to assist
anybody if needed,” stated Christophe,
who had already been involved in this
role for three years before being officially
appointed. He noted that a positive side
effect of the appointment was to put El
Gouna on the map from yet another angle,
as the opening of the honorary consulate
was reported in Belgian newspapers.
The inauguration event was held at
DuPort Pool Club in Abu Tig Marina in the
presence of His Excellency Gilles
assistant at the TTC corporate office, was
named secretary to the honorary consul;
she swore allegiance to the king and
obedience to the constitution and the laws
of the Belgian people.
The group then proceeded to the honorary
consulate located nearby at the TTC
corporate headquarters on the ground
floor of an Upper Nubia villa. The venue
bears a shield with the Belgian coat
of arms and the flags of Belgium, the
European Union, Egypt, and the Red Sea
governorate, and a ceremonial cutting
of the ribbon at the entrance gave
the audience access to the honorary
consulate. Portraits of King Albert II and
Queen Paola dominate the office, and a
photograph of the late Frans Lambrecht,
Christophe’s father, is also displayed
along with the framed Order of the Crown
of Belgium that he had received.

and Brigadier Mohamed Selim, director of
El Gouna Security.
Benedicte Versailles welcomed the
attendees on behalf of the Belgian
embassy in Cairo before inviting
Christophe to take the oath on stage.
In front of the assembly of officials and
community members, he swore “to fulfill
faithfully and in accordance with the
Belgian laws, my duties and function, and
to contribute with everything in my power
to all that can advance the interests
of Belgian navigation and commerce.”

Belgian citizen and management
The party continued with a surf and turf
dinner at DuPort. The Belgian community
at large was invited for the second part of
the event, which included a performance
by Flemish singer Belle Perez, a personal
friend of Christophe’s, who entertained
the audience with the most famous hits
of her repertoire as well as some of her
favorite songs swaying to the beat of latin
rhythms. //

CARE FOR
DOLPHINS
CAMPAIGN

KNOWLEDGE IS THE STARTING
POINT FOR PROTECTING WILDLIFE
The Dolphin Watch Alliance was founded
2011 in Gossau, Switzerland. It aims to
facilitate ethical and financial support for
projects that involve the research and
protection of dolphins. It is entirely funded
by donations, and the board is comprised
of biologists and anthropologists from
Zurich University as well as a specialist
in marine mammal medicine and a
marketing specialist from Walter Zoo
Gossau. The Alliance supports and
endorses the project Dolphin Watch
Natural Underwater Science, which
conducts over- and underwater research
in an effort to gain new insights into the
behavior of dolphins to be able to set up
necessary protection zones in selected
Red Sea locations.

LIPTIHXS½RERGIXLIMVEGXMZMXMIW
Swiss biologist Angela Ziltener (MSc), a research associate from
Zurich University, launched the Dolphin Watch Underwater Natural
Science project in 2009. It now operates under the umbrella of
the Dolphin Watch Alliance (see boxed text) and, under Ziltener’s
direction, is actively engaged in the study and protection of dolphins
in the greater Hurghada area.
The main research project pursued by Ziltener over the last
three years resulted in a catalogue of 140 individual Indo-Pacific
bottlenose dolphins. Each animal is named and identified by a
photograph of the dorsal fin which, along with flukes and pectoral
fins, shows distinguishing marks and characteristics in a manner
similar to human fingerprints.
Observations made from the surface as well as during scuba dives
allow the scientist to follow dolphin pods and study their habitat,
range, and behavior. “I watch their daily life and how they hunt, clean
themselves, sleep, and interact with one another,” explained Ziltener.
“I want to find out more about their needs; not just what they do but
how they do it.” Dolphins have been shown to be capable of innovation
and the use of tools; for example, they have been observed carrying
a sponge or piece of coral in their mouths while hunting for mollusks
on the seabed in order to protect their noses from spiky creatures.
They are also capable of teaching other dolphins such tactics, and
this transmission of new knowledge within a specific group is a
manifestation of culture.
Dolphin Watch Alliance and Freds Swim Academy came together
to create the Care for Dolphins program in August 2012. This
campaign aims to raise awareness about the excesses of the
dolphin watching industry in the region. Indeed, swimming with wild
dolphins has become an increasingly popular tourist attraction in
Winter 2012-2013 | 15
Red Sea beach resorts. As a result, multiple tourist boats and
zodiacs follow the dolphins for several hours every day without
maintaining the necessary 30-meter safety distance, and large
numbers of snorkelers jump in the water directly into groups of
dolphins. This is a source of stress and potential injury for the
animals, and studies have shown that dolphins change their
behavior, vocalizations, and even group structure under such
circumstances, which can have long-term impacts on the Red
Sea dolphin population.
To support the activities of the Care for Dolphins program,
a fundraiser was organized on September 28, 2012, on the
occasion of World Tourism Day at the Moevenpick Resort & Spa
El Gouna. Following a breakfast buffet at the hotel, Ziltener gave
a presentation for 30 residents, hotel guests, and employees
assembled in a conference room. A charity swim followed in
the hotel’s lagoon; everyone had the opportunity to contribute,
either by swimming or sponsoring a swimmer. The event saw 26
participants, including the Moevenpick’s own swim team formed
for the occasion, swim a total of 34,460 meters.
Prizes sponsored by Moevenpick and Freds Swim Academy went
to Karim “Kimo” Khaled Mohamed and his mother Jill Falkous for
swimming the most rounds in the Family category; they received
a hotel day pass for two adults and two children that included
lunch. Residents Hassan El Hakeem and Basil Denson were
awarded a month’s swim club membership and a free massage
at the Moevenpick Health Club, respectively, for first and second
place in the single swimmer category.
“Do Not Touch” educational cartoon
“When you go on a safari, you don’t drive into a herd of zebras,
chase them off, or try to touch them,” observed Angela. “But
that’s what people are doing in the water, showing no respect for
the animals.” In contrast, when Ziltener observes dolphins, she
anchors her boat near a reef frequented by the dolphins she hopes
to see and waits for them there. Dolphins are naturally inquisitive
and come by themselves to check out the new arrivals. “They find
us through echolocation and take the lead if they are in the mood
to interact with us,” she said. Freds Swim Academy Owner Sandy
Weder El Sammra concurred: “It’s very impressive to see how
dolphins recognize Angela and accept her as part of the group.”
A total amount of 4,500 LE was collected on that day; 3,000 LE
out of the total was donated by the Swiss family of a swimming
instructor. The money will be used to support the Care for
Dolphins campaign in two areas. First, it will help fund Dolphin
Watch research activities, thereby supporting the acquisition of
knowledge essential to the protection of the animals. Second,
it will be applied toward promoting awareness among the
population through educational programs. Such programming
includes visits to schools to teach children about dolphins and
“If you behave decently with wild animals, you get more out of it,”
stated Sandy. Care for Dolphins, along with other environmental
organizations, advocates for better laws to be adopted and
implemented to protect the wild dolphins of the Red Sea. They
believe, however, that such advocacy is not enough, for by the
time new regulations come into effect, harassed dolphins will
have moved out of the range of boats from Hurghada and El
Gouna, thereby depriving both scientists and tourists from the
opportunity to see these precious marine mammals.
Thus, Care for Dolphins also works to raise awareness among
the local population and visitors about dolphins’ needs. Using
Freds Swim Academy’s existing network, the partnership places
a strong emphasis on the next generation: children who might
become excursion organizers or snorkel guides and who can
already discuss the issue with their parents. Teaching aids
include a brochure in English and Arabic explaining basic facts
about dolphin physiology and behavior and cartoons illustrating
what dolphins like and dislike. This fun approach to education
allows children to sympathize with the needs of social animals
that live, play, and rest together, but do not like being chased by
boats or touched by swimmers.
Swimming lessons are another opportunity to raise awareness.
Swimming club participants at El Gouna International School are
told that 4,000 laps in the school’s 25-meter-long pool roughly
correspond to the distance swam daily by a wild dolphin; such
analogies help understand why a dolphinarium cannot possibly
compare to a life led in the wild. “Only those who know and
understand nature are willing to protect it and take care of it” is
the campaign’s guiding principle.

camps during school holidays, and public presentations in hotels
and other community venues discussing bottlenose dolphins
living in the Hurghada area and explaining how to interact with
them in a respectful and sustainable way.
Boat trips can be organized on request for participants to learn
about dolphins with Angela Ziltener. The Care for Dolphins team
hopes to make such awareness trips available for residents, but
they are not meant to become a regular business activity. //

FANTA AT WORK
An EGIS student’s foray into the workaday world
Text: Fanta Keyta

El Gouna International School, in partnership with local
businesses, helps students explore career opportunities
through short internships. In this issue, year 11 EGIS
student Fanta Keyta shares her experiences from a week
working in the demanding arena of public relations.
As a student of El Gouna International
School I was given the opportunity of a
weeks’ work experience in a placement of
my choice. This program was introduced
to students as a way to give them a
preview of what work would be like with
the hours and demands that differ from
school. It’s a great way to come to grips
with the challenges of the work field. It
can give them a glimpse into their chosen
career path to see if it really is for them.
Being an avid writer I aim to pursue a
journalism career, hopefully leading to
becoming an editor. What I wanted out of
my work experience was to learn the basics
of this work field and possibly understand
it further so that I could finally decide
whether it was what I really wanted to do.
Due to the unavailability of this choice for
full-time work experience, I was pleased
to accept a placement at Orascom Hotels’

department, which functions as the
owning company’s central hotel liaison
office. On my first day I was introduced to
my mentor, Ghada Amin, who is in charge
of hotels’ public relations. She then gave
me an orientation to the Steigenberger
Golf Resort in El Gouna. I got to see a
couple of rooms, which were absolutely
beautiful. Afterwards she took me to
the Sheraton, where I had another brief
orientation. I was able to see how the
hotels were laid out and the differences in
their facilities and structural aspects.
me to accompany her. I found out that the
PR agent had previously been a journalist!
As you can imagine I bombarded her with
questions, which she readily answered
with the utmost enthusiasm.
The next day I went back to the office in
Downtown El Gouna. I was given the task
of completing some research on customer
opinions using online references. Luckily
a fellow staff member was meeting the
new El Gouna account manager of the
German PR agency who handles the
destination’s promotion, and she invited
I spent the next two days working in the
office for a change and learnt how to
use different applications, like Microsoft
Outlook, that enabled the Hotel Sales
department to correspond with one
another more easily. Furthermore I
learnt how to complete and use a SWOT
(Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-
On Tuesday I was fortunate enough to
visit all the El Gouna hotels managed by
Orascom. At the Steigenberger I met my
mentor and the PR agent who had come
to familiarize herself with the destination,
and from there we began an exhausting
but invigorating day that I thought was the
best of my experience.
Threats) Analysis graph as an exercise in
marketing strategy that would be useful
later on. As a glorious finish to the week
I was treated to some exquisite cake and
left the office in high spirits.
My work was relatively manageable, and
I was proud that I coped well even though
being rather shy I was absolutely mortified
the first time having to talk to people.
However I learnt that communication is a
crucial point in this area. I was surprised
and delighted at just how welcoming and
supportive the PR team was. They were
ever so friendly and were always ready to
answer my questions.
The time I spent in Orascom Hotels Public
Relations Department was very beneficial.
I learnt the different subdivisions to
public relations, the ways that hotels
communicate, the different departments
of hotels, and how customer relations
work. Moreover I learnt how to use new
applications that can assist me later
on in life. I also discovered that to truly
succeed you have to be confident and
open-minded. Furthermore it opened my
eyes to the marketing aspects and how
to manage myself efficiently. In addition
I gained knowledge of the marketing and
advertising world and actually found that
my confidence grew and that I was surer of
myself each time I talked to new people.
“Being an avid writer I aim to pursue a
journalism career, hopefully leading to
becoming an editor.” Fanta Keyta
In conclusion, after completing my work
experience I decided that I most definitely
wanted to pursue a career in journalism,
but I have learnt that it was not as easy
as I thought it would be. But I’m pressing
ahead with it and I hope this article will
be the start of my blossoming career. I
would like to thank all the people who
have allowed me to enjoy this wonderful
opportunity. //

a half to three hours, while older children
can ride elegant Egyptian-Arabic cross
horses for longer trips to the Oasis. “We
recommend wearing long trousers and
closed shoes and we have a selection of
helmets,” advises Dolly Gallo, the Swiss
owner of the stables. Following rides
children can spend time petting the animals
and feeding them carrots, apples, or dried
bread brought along from home. Resident
cats are part of the stable family and can be
seen chasing each other through the sand
and around the hooves. Basic riding lessons
are available at the stables, and a fourweek, eight-session course for children
covers not only riding but also equipment
use and animal feeding and grooming. “The
staff are very professional,” relates resident
Julie Bromilow. “My eight-year-old son

CROONERS
MAKING A BRAND NEW START OF IT
Text: Francoise Ohayon
Photographs courtesy of Crooners Club
The opening of the elegant Crooners Club provides a new place in
town to relax with a drink before or after dinner, chat with friends,
and listen to soft music in mellow surroundings.
Crooners Club is the story of two friends, Serge Albert and Guy
Pardillos. One Sunday evening after enjoying a nice dinner out in
El Gouna, they looked for a place to continue their conversation,
but could not find a spot that allowed for a meaningful exchange
over the loud music. Walking around in search of a suitable bar
or lounge, the pair started humming a Sinatra classic, and the
rest is history. Guy was already in the entertainment business,
and Serge had wanted to open a piano bar or jazz club for years,
and so the idea of Crooners Club was born.
The two friends, like the legendary singer Frank Sinatra who
inspired them, did it their way. “We wanted to create a chic place
to have a proper drink and a nice conversation,” said Serge.
Véronique Paquet, head of the club’s public relations, agreed.
“We do everything that others don’t do,” she elaborated. “We
don’t do boom-boom noise. Instead, we like melodious music
with soft, understandable lyrics.”
The club’s soundtrack spans the classic crooner universe,
featuring the music of Tony Bennett, Peter Cincotti, Melody
Gardot, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. It is also a place to listen
to bossa nova with the latin jazz tunes of Stan Getz and Gilberto
Gil. Famous voices of the soul music genre such as Nina Simone
and Barry White complement the musical landscape, along with
contemporary lounge fusion and nu-jazz.
The elegant décor is in tune with the musical theme. Black is
the dominant color on the walls and in the massive bar at the
back of the venue, where an ample liquor selection is displayed.
Parquet wood floors add warmth to the locale, and comfortable
white leather armchairs and sofas invite lingering in cozy spaces.
Soft lighting adds to the mellow ambiance, while allowing
patrons to see what they drink and who they talk to. Black and
white staff uniforms include the emblematic black fedora hat,
and meticulous attention to detail extends to restroom towels
embroidered with the Crooners Club logo.
Walls are adorned with black and white photographs of illustrious
performance artists such as Harry Connick Jr., Eddy Mitchell,
Sammy Davis Jr., Stan Getz, Marilyn Monroe, Yves Montand,
and Frank Sinatra. Television screens disposed around the club
display more photographs, jazz music instruments, cocktails, and
famous quotes about wine. An Atmosphere Media system, the first
in El Gouna, combines four television screens in a very realistic
rendition of music bands playing; it shows relaxing nature scenes
when not in music mode. A jazz pianist is expected to play twice
weekly, and live bands will be scheduled occasionally.
Crooners serves state-of-the-art cocktails, with or without alcohol,
and with an emphasis on promoting the products of El Gouna’s
own winery. Le Baron sparkling wine serves as a basis for the
club’s signature cocktail enhanced by a small scoop of karkadé
(hibiscus flower) sorbet inspired by the Crooners Club red round
logo. The cocktail menu, in keeping with the bar’s theme, has
drinks named after famous artists, such as the Dean Martin
Americano, the Barry White Gin Fizz, the Harry Connick Jr. Mojito,
and the Tony Curtis Planter’s Punch. Homeowner cardholders get
a 10% discount on all beverages and entrance fees.
The Crooners Club invitation-only VIP inauguration took place
on September 30 with Le Baron sparkling wine flowing merrily
and petits fours catered by Le Deauville. The event attracted
approximately 200 of El Gouna’s movers and shakers, and Guy
Pardillos stated how pleased he was to see all of the town’s
society and business owners coming to discover the place. The
official public opening followed on October 1, and the club’s first
Live Jazz Party featuring the band French Connection followed on
October 6, 2012. //

EXCURSION
28 | El Gouna Magazine
Members of El Gouna’s Gounie Gangsters Dive Club enjoyed a guided
tour of the museum and aquarium located within the grounds of the
National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. The marine biological
station, which was founded by the Egyptian University in the late 1920s,
was the first on the Red Sea Coast and the sole research institution of
the kind in the area during its first 30 years of operation.
The National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (N.I.O.F.)
is one of twelve national research institutions focused on marine
science and affiliated with Egypt’s Ministry of State for Scientific
Research. Dr. Khaled Moselhy is director of the Hurghada
Branch, located just a short drive from El Gouna, and he
oversees N.I.O.F.’s research on aquatic environments. Scientists
working for the institute study the effects of dietary and
environmental change on various species, chronicle differences
in behavior between species in captivity versus the wild, and
monitor changes in water quality and their effects on diseases
that impact marine life.
Recently an N.I.O.F. project was carried out in El Gouna’s
lagoons, which are characterized by their featureless, muddy
sand bottoms, higher than normal sedimentation rates, and
poor opacity. Over a two-year period of time, corals taken from a
nearby threatened reef were transplanted to a location close to
the shore, alongside the White Villas where they could be easily
monitored. They were later moved to a final location where they
experienced various disturbances such as temperature drops,
unbalanced weather conditions, and heavy rainfall draining from
nearby rocks and mountains (which is accompanied by high
rates of sedimentation). A high percentage of the corals survived,
recovered, and began to proliferate, attracting other marine
organisms as they integrated in their new location.
The N.I.O.F. is also home to the Hurghada Marine Museum and
Aquarium, and our El Gouna dive group easily arranged a visit to
the latter via the facility’s facebook page. We were met by a staff
member as we parked in a gravel lot by the sea, and our tour
began at the home of Professor Hamed Goher, the first Egyptian
director of the marine biology station. The late oceanographer and
scientist spent 25 years doing research in this wooden building
overlooking the turquoise sea, and the neat blue structure is
reminiscent of colonial houses found in places like Barbados.
Our guide Sahar shared stories about Goher, who was known as
the King of the Red Sea and who died in 1994 at the age of 87.
His pioneering work served as the foundation of marine science
in Egypt and the broader Arab world, and older Egyptians will
remember his 18-year television role in a show entitled “The World
of the Seas.” Goher’s research on soft corals, which he carried
out from 1931 to 1939, earned him a D.Sc. from Cambridge. He
was a lifelong bachelor, and his devotion to the sea prompted one
journalist to remark that Goher was “married to a mermaid.” His
enthusiasm for his field of study was unflagging, and he noted
that “oceanography encompasses all the known sciences, from
astronomy to geology to mathematics.” In addition to his research,
Goher headed a number of scientific organizations, including
the Association of Faculty of Science Graduates, the Zoological
Society, and the Egyptian Society of Oceanography.
The late professor’s home now contains a number of exhibits,
including one that showcases his diving equipment. We were
fascinated by the heavy, antique diving helmet, twin cylinders,
and unfamiliar-looking regulators and pump. Goher’s typewriter,
telephone, instruments, and laboratory equipment are also
displayed in glass cabinets, and old photographs around the
displays showed his research in progress. The next room was
a treasure trove of glass specimen jars containing puffer fish,
baby turtles, octopi, and many other species preserved in
formaldehyde. Dates of preservation are displayed on the jars,
and the quality of the specimens was remarkable given their age.
The building next door also contained a few surprises. Huge
manta rays hung from either side of the entrance hall, and
stuffed birds and crocodiles from the River Nile are also on
display. A large room on the right featured large sea creatures
beautifully preserved and hung on the walls or suspended from
the ceiling. Among the various shark and dolphin species is
a moonfish—an extremely rare deep water animal acquired
recently by the museum.
Another room contains attractive displays of smaller reef fish
and turtles, while the final building in the museum complex
houses the aquarium. There we found tanks full of fish set
into rocky walls and a large central pool with two inquisitive
turtles. Safaa Eli, a native of Suez who holds a degree from Cairo
University’s Department of Chemistry and Zoology, is in charge
of water conditions at the aquarium. She measures pH levels,
salinity, and temperature, and her job also entails monitoring
the health of the fish. After a closer look at the marine life in
the tanks, our tour came to an end, and we wandered out to
the terrace of one of the wooden buildings, where we lingered
to enjoy beautiful views of the Red Sea and local fisherman
repairing their nets along the shore. //
The Marine Museum and Aquarium is located in the Ahyaa district
of Hurghada in front of the Mubarak 7 villas, and the facilities are
open daily from 10 am to 7 pm. Tickets are 30 LE for citizens and
residents of Egypt and 10 U.S. dollars for non-residents.

Traveling along Egyptian roads is
at times a risky affair. There were
approximately 7,000 road deaths in the
country last year, and the accident rate
is more than double the global average.
Some have complained about poor road
maintenance in the area, but government
statistics report that most road accidents
and deaths in the Red Sea Governorate
are related to human error and largely
preventable. This is particularly the
case in the approximately 100-kilometer
stretch between Ras Gharib and
Za’afarana, where drivers routinely take
advantage of the wide freeway to drive
at high speeds, which causes them to
lose control and put others in danger.
Following the general guidelines below
will help ensure that you, your family,
and others remain safe the next time you
travel by road:
Wear Seatbelts:
This commonly repeated tip is often
ignored in areas where enforcement
is lax, but the fact remains that no
matter where in the world you are,
seatbelts save lives. In the case that
you are involved in an accident, wearing
a seatbelt significantly decreases your
chance of serious injury.
Place Children in Appropriate Car Seats:
Make sure that your children are placed
in car seats until they reach 12 years
old or are taller than 1.4 meters. All
children under 12 should also remain in
the rear seat of the vehicle.
Never Drink and Drive:
No matter where you live, drinking
and driving is a dangerous decision
and puts the lives of everyone on the
road at risk. Always have a designated
driver if you are going out with friends,
and take a cab if you are alone. As far
as the law is concerned, the official
drinking limit is a blood alcohol level
of 0.05%. Enforcement may be lax,
but if you cause even a minor accident
and it is confirmed that alcohol was
involved, penalties and treatment by the
authorities will become much worse.
Follow Posted Speed Limits:
The Egyptian government determines
speed limits based on road quality,
capacity, and terrain. The limits may seem
low to those coming from abroad, but they
exist for your safety. Taking slightly longer
to complete your journey it is a small price
to pay in exchange for safety.
Avoid Long Night Journeys:
Traveling at night in Egypt is not
extremely dangerous and has improved
much over the years. However, the
main road between Hurghada and El
Gouna remains unlit, and random speed
bumps along the road can make trips
treacherous. Therefore, if you do travel
by car after dark, make it a short journey
and make sure that the person behind
the wheel is wide awake and alert.
Always Leave Your Headlights on at Night:
If you do travel at night, make sure that
you are using mostly main roads and
avoid unknown “shortcuts” that could
lead to danger. Make sure that you
keep your headlights on throughout the
journey, and if you are in a taxi or car
with a driver do not be afraid to insist
that the lights stay on. This is especially
true for Tuk-Tuks within El Gouna.
Give Extra Space for Trucks:
Truck drivers in Egypt sometimes drive
shifts longer than 24 hours, and these
vehicles are one of the primary causes
of road deaths along Egypt’s highways.
Whenever you pass a trailer, make
sure that it is on a wide stretch of road
and give plenty of space and time for
mistakes. //

EGIS students show off their art skills
Text: Brian Wright
The winter season is upon us again, and students at
the El Gouna International School have made their way
back to the classroom for another year of learning. In
celebration of our Learning issue, we invited elementary
students to draw a depiction of their favorite place in
El Gouna. After receiving more than 30 entries, each of
which contained a special viewpoint of the town, the El
Gouna Magazine artistic team including our art director
and designers met to judge each entry and pick the best
in terms of creativity, use of color, and expression of what
the natural beauty and architectural harmony of
El Gouna are all about.
Although every entry we received was beautiful and
showed how high the talent level has reached for some
students as young as the 4th grade, ultimately 6 were
chosen as the official winners of the competition and are
displayed here.

ACADEMIA
Future Workshop
El Gouna 2030
Development within the Red Sea regional context
Photographs courtesy of Technische Universität Berlin
Stakeholders and scholars
established the Community
Forum El Gouna 2030
as they discussed the
opportunities and challenges
faced by the town as it
moves toward becoming
Egypt’s first eco city.
The Future Workshop El Gouna 2030
took place on September 16-17, 2012,
and was organized by Technische
Universität Berlin’s West Asia North
Africa Cooperation Unit. The purpose
of the two-day event was to discuss the
challenges and opportunities that exist
for El Gouna and its neighbors in the
Red Sea region, as well as the future of
El Gouna as it moves toward becoming
an eco city. Citizens of El Gouna and the
surrounding area joined representatives
of various local organizations, companies,
and other institutions throughout the
region to attend the workshop held at TUB
Campus El Gouna.
The first part of the Future Workshop
focused on El Gouna’s place in the greater
Hurghada area and the Red Sea region.
Although the resort town has developed
38 | El Gouna Magazine
its own distinctive profile and standard,
its development and perspectives are part
of the larger regional context. Topics and
questions discussed included strategies
and concepts for economic development
in the Red Sea region, new opportunities
related to the growing fields of education
and knowledge, and the presence of TUB
Campus El Gouna as stimulating factor
for the local and regional development.
On day two, discussions zoomed in from
the regional to the local level with the
goal of identifying ways of moving El
Gouna as quickly as possible toward
becoming the first “eco” or “green” city
in Egypt. Projects were identified in which
academic partners of TUB can cooperate
with stakeholders of the El Gouna
community. Areas discussed included
guidelines for sustainable urban planning,
energy efficiency strategies, reduction of
water consumption, desalination by solar
energy, green spaces by reforestation,
low cost housing, and the use of regional
building materials.
Approximately 40 participants attended
the event, including citizens of El Gouna
and other locations in the region; the
governor of the Red Sea region and
his deputy; academics from TUB and
Egyptian universities; and representatives
of organizations, companies, and other
institutions interested in, responsible for,
or otherwise involved in the development
of El Gouna and the region.
Participants were positive about their
experience, related Prof. Rudolf Schäfer,
founding director of TUB Campus El
Gouna and study dean for the institution’s
master’s program in urban development
(MSc). “This was a very successful and
inspiring first step towards a fruitful
cooperation with our local and regional
neighbors. Campus El Gouna is not only
a venue for academic education; we also
want to contribute with our means to a
sustainable development of El Gouna and
to the realization of the ambitious goal of
becoming an eco city.”
The main outcome of the workshop was
the decision to establish the “Community
Forum El Gouna 2030.” This forum
will serve as platform for regularly
scheduled events in which progress
and implementation of existing projects
are discussed and further projects are
developed. In practical terms, the next
step will involve TU Berlin and Freie
Universität Berlin set up a meteorological
station and carry out a climatological
inventory of El Gouna in February 2013.
“Campus El Gouna is not only a venue for academic education;
we also want to contribute with our means to a sustainable
development of El Gouna and to the realization of the
ambitious goal of becoming an eco city.” Prof. Rudolf Schäfer
A documentation of the workshop will soon
be uploaded on the TUB Campus El Gouna
website, and a presentation will follow
during the next Community Forum. //

Pharaons Rally 2012

40 | El Gouna Magazine
An internationally ranked event on the rally
circuit puts Egypt on the motor racing map.
The thrill of racing through the desert is
a truly remarkable experience. Dealing
with the harsh conditions, navigating
tough terrain, and handling any technical
problems along the way make for a
challenge. Every year, drivers in 4-wheel
drive, 2-wheel drive, and motorcycle
categories come from around the world
to compete in the Pharaons Rally from
October 1 through 6. An internationally
ranked event since 2010, the rally
is monitored and regulated by the
Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile
(FIA), and results obtained locally affect
teams’ global placement.
This year’s Pharaons Rally in Egypt had
an excellent showing, garnering around
100 participants. (As a comparison, the
Dakar rally in South America, which is
the most popular global event on the
rally raid circuit, attracts around 200
competing vehicles).
The 2012 Pharaons track was broken
into six stages covering a total of 2,800
kilometers. Each stage was designed
to test drivers along a range of different
terrain types including rolling sand dunes
that challenge judgment, rocky trails
that test the mechanics, and wide valleys
perfect for speed. It is also a chance to
show off Egypt’s diverse natural landscape.
Every year, a number of Egyptian teams
enter the rally. In previous years El Gouna
has sponsored a team, but unfortunately
it was unable to enter into this year’s
competition. According to Al Rahalla team
driver Tarek Erian, Egyptian participation
in the rally has had its ups and downs.
“There are a lot of obstacles that hold back
Egyptians from getting involved,” he said.
“Mostly this has to do with sponsorships.
It requires a great deal of money to sign
up for these competitions, ship your cars
to the competition site, and develop your
support team that helps deal with the
logistics and maintenance. Sometimes
corporations step up to give their support,
but a lot of the times this comes down to
being a personal hobby.” Despite funding
obstacles, Al Rahalla was able to enter
three total cars this year, and Tarek placed
9th overall, securing a world championship
ranking of 5th place.
As a special addition to the rally, this
year witnessed the launch of the Dakar
Challenge. Designed to help out racing
teams from countries without much
international presence, the challenge
consists of several smaller benchmarks
taken throughout the course of the track
with the winner getting an all expenses
paid trip to the Dakar Rally, which is
scheduled to begin on January 5, 2013.
Tarek won the challenge and will
become the first Egyptian and youngest
competitor to participate in Dakar. //
