The eccentric and eclectic Hotel Metropole overlooks a lagoon with spectacular
views of San Giorgio Island. Steps from the Biennale d’arte and Piazza San Marco,

Another example of Venice’s living history, The Ca’ Sagredo lies in a 15th
century palace on the Grand Canal between Ca D’Oro and the Rialto bridge.

host of architectural treasures – no less than five centuries of history were
lovingly brought back to life. The frescoes, public areas and marble staircases

Square. This city is a living museum for those of you who don’t really like museums, and after you’ve climbed the Spanish Steps, gasped at Michelangelo’s

British Airways fly to Rome daily from London with low cost airlines offering
alternative timings and direct departures from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted,

Edinburgh and Glasgow. The main airport, Fiumicino, is just 30km from the city
centre and transfers are approximately 45 minutes. The city’s second airport
is Ciampino and transfers are approximately 50 minutes.

The Palazzo Gattini dates back to the 15the century and until the late 1800s was
the residence of the oldest noble family in Matera, the Earl of Gattini. It’s one of
the most historic buildings surrounding the cathedral in the old quarter of the
ancient city of Matera. But behind it’s stunningly original 18th century facade lie
elegantly charming rooms by design architect Ettore Mocchetti, managing editor
of an international interior design magazine. Extensive but sympathetic restoration
using local materials has ensured that the 20 unique and luxurious rooms, offering all
the comforts of a modern home from home as well as all the antique splendour
of the original structure. Colour schemes are creamy, inspired by the calcareous
stone that dominates the Matera landscape and the walls of the ancient city,
enlivened with tastefully modern splashes of grey, black, orange and blue. The
frescoes have been restored by specialised masters and the furnishings are a
combination of contemporary and painstakingly restored antiques found in the
Palazzo. The Don Matteo restaurant also combines antique and contemporary
elements as well as national and international cuisine, while the Palazzo Gattini
SPA occupies the lower floor of the Palazzo in caves excavated in the calcareous
stone. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxing and healthy and can perhaps best
be soaked up in an antique tub of beautifying waters. After which don’t miss
partaking of a drink or two in the über-cool Duomo Café. Here the traditional
plaza setting beneath the Cathedral mingles with the designer interiors and a

Family is the abiding word at Palazzo Margherita. Located in the small hilltop
town of Bernalda close to the Ionian Sea, it was built by the Margherita family,
but it is another more famous family that has left a more distinctive mark on this
traditional 19th Century Palazzo. Bernalda is the birthplace and home of
Agostino Coppola whose grandson, Francis Ford Coppola, purchased the
Palazzo in 2004, with a dream of transforming it into a small, luxurious boutique
hotel that would introduce travellers to the stunning and still undiscovered
Basilicata region of Southern Italy. Together with acclaimed French designer
Jacques Grange, Francis Ford Coppola has created a luxurious, authentically
Italian country house hotel that’s palatial in style and levels of comfort. All of the
floors in the Palazzo have been restored from the original marble while ceilings
are decorated with Moroccan and Baroque-inspired hand-painted frescos.
Grange himself designed some of the exotic tiles and furniture, including one
of the signature suites, which is in a Tunisian style to honour Francis Coppola’s
Tunisian-born grandmother. There are Juliette balconies, claw-footed baths
and romantic courtyards, but what really distinguishes Palazzo Margherita is
the lovely family-friendly atmosphere, borne of Coppola’s desire to create a
place in which his own children would feel at home.

The Hotel SantAngelo, ideally twinned with Palazzo Gattini, is best described as a
luxury cave. A stay here is a one of a kind experience. Patient preservation and
renovation of over 1400 square meters of historical cave dwellings have created
a hotel of subterranean pathways, stairways and courtyards with 20 cave rooms
in the original dwellings. Ranging from single to twin and triple through to familysized accommodation, all are equipped with modern comforts including private

simple but elegant, with little lights in the floor that cast a cosy glow over the white
limestone walls. The elegant Regia Corte restaurant gives you the chance to dine
in a cave as well as sleep in one. The restaurant is stunningly set in two interconnecting halls with walls, ceilings and roman arches of roughly hewn rock and whitewashed stone. Cuisine is traditional and rustic using local produce. Venture outside
the luxury cave for drinks on the terrace with a view to die for, or explore the
ancient city of Matera, the city of the Sassi, the charming ancient districts, which
are an example of a complex urban structure that have been given World
Heritage Site status by UNESCO. Hotel SantAngelo is located in the centre of
Sasso Caveoso, about 30 meters far from San Pietro Caveoso Square, on the
designated tourist route around the city.
This former convent is tucked away in the picturesque old village of Maratea –
its 18th century origins can still be discerned in the whitewashed walls,
original tiled floors and raw stone walls. Yet today it comes with lashings of style
(all those virginal white fabrics are very ‘now’), not to mention an eclectic range
of contemporary oils, Murano lamps and old paintings. Just 27 uniquely-styled
guest rooms are on offer here making it ideal for an intimate wedding setting.
The rooms range from the almost nun-like Classic Rooms to the more
hedonistic suites with their canopy kingsize beds and heady views over the

British Airways fly to Catania in Sicily daily from Gatwick with low cost airlines
offering alternative timings and direct departures from Gatwick, Luton and
Manchester. Low cost carriers also fly direct to Palermo from Gatwick or
