Venice
Venice or ‘La Serenissima’, as she was known for thousands of years, is truly one of the most seductive and beguiling places anywhere in the world.
Built on more than 117 low-lying islands, this unique city is a water wonderland divided by over 100 canals and spanned by more than 400 bridges.
And whilst life on her stunning waterways is still evolving today, the ancient monuments, museums, churches, art galleries and spires will all entice you to
explore her glorious past. Wonder at the audacity of Casanova, delve into the secrets of the Council of Ten or marvel at the talent of incredible painters
like Canaletto and Paolo Veneziano. Whatever you decide to do, just like it did with Goethe, Mann and Browning before you, Venice can’t fail to capture
your imagination and seduce you with her beauty…

HOTEL METROPOLE
CA’ SAGREDO
The eccentric and eclectic Hotel Metropole overlooks a lagoon with spectacular
views of San Giorgio Island. Steps from the Biennale d’arte and Piazza San Marco,
it features in the famous map of Venice by celebrated Renaissance painter Jacopo
de Barbari. Vivaldi composed masterpieces here and Sigmund Freud and Marcel
Proust are other illustrious guests. You too will find inspiration and tranquility within
the Mediterranean oasis of jasmine, bird of paradise flowers and orange trees that
surrounds the Hotel, and in the 67 individual rooms furnished with a stunning
collection of fine 18th century antiques, art deco, silks and velvets. Candles,
perfumes and incense add to the seductive and exotic atmosphere that captures
the magic and mystery of Venetian tradition. A highlight is the Michelin starred Met
Restaurant, reached directly from the canal with a private canal entrance for taxis
or water limousines. Menus feature Venetian specialties such as salad of scallops
and caviar and scorpion fish served in fish soup gelatine. Traditional dishes such as
Brasato al Barolo are made with exclusive Piedmont’s Fassone beef and for dessert
you could enjoy La Gubana, typical of the valleys of the Natisone river, flavoured
with Nonino al Picolit grappa.
Another example of Venice’s living history, The Ca’ Sagredo lies in a 15th
century palace on the Grand Canal between Ca D’Oro and the Rialto bridge.
It opened as a hotel in 2007 after a painstaking restoration which uncovered a
host of architectural treasures – no less than five centuries of history were
lovingly brought back to life. The frescoes, public areas and marble staircases
are all quite breathtaking, as are the 42 guest rooms which are a combination
of traditional Venetian décor with a contemporary twist. The elegant restaurant
not only takes full advantage of its romantic canal-side location, but also its proximity
to the Rialto market selling fresh produce and seafood.

Rome
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for la dolce vita, Rome is the city for you. It’s an in-your-face mix of the ancient past and the stylish
present, its fashion-conscious citizens getting on with their ordinary lives against the extraordinary backdrop of the Colosseum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s
Square. This city is a living museum for those of you who don’t really like museums, and after you’ve climbed the Spanish Steps, gasped at Michelangelo’s
frescoes and tossed a coin into the Trevi Fountain, there are plenty of relaxing alternatives. So why not enjoy a pizza in a pavement café and watch the priests
on their way to the Vatican? Give your credit cards an outing and make a beeline for the Fendi, Gucci and Prada stores along the Via Condotti? And, of course,
you simply have to stay up very late and mingle with the glitterati…

Not only is the lovely The Inn at the Roman Forum located just a few steps

Florence
Today Florence is a thriving metropolis with fashionable eateries and Gucci-clad citizens. Yet this regional capital of Tuscany is also Italy’s ‘Renaissance City’ and so
will be forever linked with 15th century artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci. Its skyline is thankfully still a masterpiece courtesy of
showpieces like the Renaissance Basilica, Giotto’s Campanile and the Gothic Duomo; all of these architectural treasures enhanced by the fast-flowing Arno River
and romantic Ponte Vecchio. But if you really want to immerse yourself in Florence’s art and culture don’t leave without wandering through the Uffizi Gallery; a
visit to the Accademia is also recommended if you fancy marvelling at Michelangelo’s Statue of David. And why not use this fascinating city as a base from which
to explore the entire Chianti region, as the towns of Sienna and Pisa are all within easy driving distance?

IL SALVIATINO
Peeking out from the cypress trees that flank the Fiesole hillside, Il Salviatino is an ‘urban resort’ with a bit
of a past. This aristocratic palazzo dates back to the 15th century and still has the handpainted frescoes and
centuries-old mosaics as evidence. These vintage gems are now carefully matched with exquisite antiques,
whilst the 45 rooms are all individual works of art, yet the comfortable lounges, cordial ambience and
friendly ‘service ambassadors’ contribute more than enough warmth. So you can feel free to surrender to
the Italian treatments of one of Il Salviatino Spa by Vranjes and then linger a while over Italy’s second
religion – fine cuisine. And in a region renowned for good food, Il Salviatino’s restaurant “La Cucina del
Salviatino” – overseen by The Salviatino Collection’s Executive Chef, Carmine Caló – offers a unique
gastro-experience serving up an exquisite menu exploring the roots of Tuscan cuisine and provenance of
local ingredients. At Il Salviatino guests can enjoy authentic Florentine gastronomy in multiple locations
throughout the hotel and grounds including the Terrace with splendid views of the city and the Duomo.

VILLA SAN MICHELE
This 15th century monastery was transformed into one of the world’s most romantic getaways in the
1980s. Of course, the company had a particularly good start – the hotel’s façade is attributed to Michelangelo,
whilst its setting high in the hills of Fiesole yields stunning vistas over Florence and the Arno Valley.
Nowadays it offers 45 guest quarters, some of them secluded suites in the gardens and a few of them the
cosy hideaways of former monks, yet others are ‘named’ suites with anything from private gardens to
pool-like bathtubs. The Tuscan cuisine of the 16th century Loggia restaurant and umbrella cocktails of the
hilltop swimming pool are perfectly enhanced by the spellbinding views.

Neopolitan Riviera
The Sorrento and Amalfi Coast will make you giddy – and that’s not just because its famously winding coastal road involves impossibly steep mountain sides and
even longer drops. No, it’s because the place is both astoundingly beautiful and impossibly glamorous; artists, writers and movie stars all flocking here to find
anything from sunshine to inspiration. But this region to the south of Naples is no jet-set affair, its mood slow-paced rather than sophisticated and its way-of-life
still firmly rooted in the past. Fishermen still haul in their catch at pastel-coloured towns like POSITANO, for example; the medieval cathedral continues to take
pride of place in AMALFI, whilst RAVELLO still needs nothing more than its celebrated gardens and picture-perfect Mediterranean views to keep its visitors
enthralled. You can expect some steep climbs here, but remember there’s always a glass of limoncello waiting for you at the end! After a short crossing you reach
the island of CAPRI, off the Amalfi Coast, which offers anything from Roman remains to Versace gowns and let’s not forget the staggering sea views.

BORGO EGNAZIA – PUGLIA
MASSERIA SAN DOMENICO – PUGLIA
Located among fields of olive trees in Savelletri di Fasano close to the Adriatic sea and the ancient Roman
City of Egnazia, Borgo Egnazia is an architectural masterpiece. It’s completely built with Tufo, a local type
of limestone, and draws its inspiration from the Masserie and Apulian towns of Lecce, Bari, Ostuni, just
minutes away.
Just 500 metres from the Adriatic coast in Italy’s Puglia region, Masseria San
Domenico is a heavenly haven that exudes classic style and traditional service.
The main building dates from the fourteenth century and was used by the
Knights of Malta as a watch tower against attacks by Saracens but it’s main
purpose was more peaceful. In Puglia, masserie is the name given to centres
for farming and preserving farm produce and this rich heritage is very evident
in Masseria San Domenico, in the whitewashed walls, the ancient arrow slits
and chimneys and in the 60 hectares of ancient olive trees and orchards that
surround it. The tower has been carefully restored and converted into a refined
resort that offers boutique-intimacy and premier facilities. These include a
magnificent outdoor free-form swimming pool, a state-of-the-art Thalassotherapy Spa, an exclusive white sand beach with panoramic pontoon, a
restaurant with a wide selection of champagne, caviar and vodka and two
tennis courts – all with the backdrop of the blue Mediterranean sky.
The stunning resort balances tradition and innovation in perfect harmony. It’s composed of three distinctive
areas: the elegant sophistication of La Corte; the dynamic and lively Borgo, and the classically comfortable Villas.
The hotel is a popular destination for golfers thanks to the San Domenico golf course. The lush and
expansive 18 hole championship course, considered one of the top in Italy, borders the azure sea with a
clubhouse situated right on the coast.
But it’s not just golfers who feel at home here. It’s a haven for families too. The Trullalleri kid’s clubs is
equipped with a playroom, relaxation and reading areas and a dedicated zero-entry swimming pool.
Activities include jewelry making, vegetable gardening and of course visits to the beach. The Finchi D’India Teen Club
is a multimedia extravaganza complete with Nintendo Wii console and Wi-Fi as well as tennis and golf clinics.

MASSERIA TORRE COCCARO – PUGLIA
The names of the suites in this 5-star luxury resort are evocative enough to
conjure images of refined luxury and natural beauty. Choose the Orange Garden
Suite with private pool and large Jacuzzi set within your own ancient orange
garden, or the expansive Chapel Suite beside the ancient church in the main
courtyard, a favoured setting for movies and photo shoots. There are four
restaurants at Cocarro, including the Restaurant Gourmet in stables dating back
to 1600, and the Coccaro Beach Club, an exclusive sea restaurant with fish
sushi and oyster bar. Puglia is the garden of Italy producing 30% of all vegetables
and what all the restaurants at Coccaro have in common is a dedication to
using the best local produce. Unfiltered Olive Oil handpicked and cold pressed
on the same day, juicy figs grown on the estate, lamb and cheeses from local
farms, and porcini mushrooms and asparagus taken from the wild. Meanwhile
the nearby fishing village of Savelletri offers the best fish of the day. Spa treatments
follow this same principle, and if all this is not enough to tempt you, Masseria
Torre Coccaro is a also a paradise for children and beach lovers. It boasts a
private sandy beach with their Beach Club, a massage pavilion and even a quiet
mini club, promising relaxation for parents and fun for the children.

PALAZZO GATTINI – MATERA
PALAZZO MARGHERITA – BERNALDA
The Palazzo Gattini dates back to the 15the century and until the late 1800s was
the residence of the oldest noble family in Matera, the Earl of Gattini. It’s one of
the most historic buildings surrounding the cathedral in the old quarter of the
ancient city of Matera. But behind it’s stunningly original 18th century facade lie
elegantly charming rooms by design architect Ettore Mocchetti, managing editor
of an international interior design magazine. Extensive but sympathetic restoration
using local materials has ensured that the 20 unique and luxurious rooms, offering all
the comforts of a modern home from home as well as all the antique splendour
of the original structure. Colour schemes are creamy, inspired by the calcareous
stone that dominates the Matera landscape and the walls of the ancient city,
enlivened with tastefully modern splashes of grey, black, orange and blue. The
frescoes have been restored by specialised masters and the furnishings are a
combination of contemporary and painstakingly restored antiques found in the
Palazzo. The Don Matteo restaurant also combines antique and contemporary
elements as well as national and international cuisine, while the Palazzo Gattini
SPA occupies the lower floor of the Palazzo in caves excavated in the calcareous
stone. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxing and healthy and can perhaps best
be soaked up in an antique tub of beautifying waters. After which don’t miss
partaking of a drink or two in the über-cool Duomo Café. Here the traditional
plaza setting beneath the Cathedral mingles with the designer interiors and a
passion for great music, often live.
Family is the abiding word at Palazzo Margherita. Located in the small hilltop
town of Bernalda close to the Ionian Sea, it was built by the Margherita family,
but it is another more famous family that has left a more distinctive mark on this
traditional 19th Century Palazzo. Bernalda is the birthplace and home of
Agostino Coppola whose grandson, Francis Ford Coppola, purchased the
Palazzo in 2004, with a dream of transforming it into a small, luxurious boutique
hotel that would introduce travellers to the stunning and still undiscovered
Basilicata region of Southern Italy. Together with acclaimed French designer
Jacques Grange, Francis Ford Coppola has created a luxurious, authentically
Italian country house hotel that’s palatial in style and levels of comfort. All of the
floors in the Palazzo have been restored from the original marble while ceilings
are decorated with Moroccan and Baroque-inspired hand-painted frescos.
Grange himself designed some of the exotic tiles and furniture, including one
of the signature suites, which is in a Tunisian style to honour Francis Coppola’s
Tunisian-born grandmother. There are Juliette balconies, claw-footed baths
and romantic courtyards, but what really distinguishes Palazzo Margherita is
the lovely family-friendly atmosphere, borne of Coppola’s desire to create a
place in which his own children would feel at home.

HOTEL SANTANGELO – MATERA
LA LOCANDA DELLE DONNE MONACHE – MARATEA
The Hotel SantAngelo, ideally twinned with Palazzo Gattini, is best described as a
luxury cave. A stay here is a one of a kind experience. Patient preservation and
renovation of over 1400 square meters of historical cave dwellings have created
a hotel of subterranean pathways, stairways and courtyards with 20 cave rooms
in the original dwellings. Ranging from single to twin and triple through to familysized accommodation, all are equipped with modern comforts including private
bathroom, fridge, satellite TV and air conditioning. Decor is crisp and clean,
simple but elegant, with little lights in the floor that cast a cosy glow over the white
limestone walls. The elegant Regia Corte restaurant gives you the chance to dine
in a cave as well as sleep in one. The restaurant is stunningly set in two interconnecting halls with walls, ceilings and roman arches of roughly hewn rock and whitewashed stone. Cuisine is traditional and rustic using local produce. Venture outside
the luxury cave for drinks on the terrace with a view to die for, or explore the
ancient city of Matera, the city of the Sassi, the charming ancient districts, which
are an example of a complex urban structure that have been given World
Heritage Site status by UNESCO. Hotel SantAngelo is located in the centre of
Sasso Caveoso, about 30 meters far from San Pietro Caveoso Square, on the
designated tourist route around the city.
This former convent is tucked away in the picturesque old village of Maratea –
its 18th century origins can still be discerned in the whitewashed walls,
original tiled floors and raw stone walls. Yet today it comes with lashings of style
(all those virginal white fabrics are very ‘now’), not to mention an eclectic range
of contemporary oils, Murano lamps and old paintings. Just 27 uniquely-styled
guest rooms are on offer here making it ideal for an intimate wedding setting.
The rooms range from the almost nun-like Classic Rooms to the more
hedonistic suites with their canopy kingsize beds and heady views over the
rooftops. And you can certainly kick austerity into touch in Il Sacello restaurant,
the Italian cuisine drawing from the fresh seafood and flavours of Basilicata
restaurant attracting an equally smart and modern clientele.

Sicily and Sardinia
For all that it’s part of Italy, SICILY – the largest island in the Mediterranean – is another country. It wears its history on its sleeve with rich relics scattered almost
casually. The food has hints of Arabic spices; the vegetation is exotic with oranges, lemons and palms; the pace of life slow, warm and friendly. Historical riches
include show-stopping Greek temples, Baroque churches, and medieval mosaics. No visitor can resist the pull of Mount Etna’s eerie volcanic landscape or the
south coast’s sandy beaches. Or, of course, a glass or two of Marsala. Midway between Italy and North Africa, SARDINIA is Italy with a twist of the exotic. In the
south, idyllic sandy coves mix with spectacular wave carved rocks and Cagliari’s Citadel and Roman amphitheatre.
