Please note this is one week earlier than our normal meeting date. More information will be in November's issue - BUT, save that date and join us for a great evening. Tom Sloan, Chairman HOUGH "Aretus G. Hough was born January 9th, 1836 in Nelson, Ashland county, Ohio, and died with an affection of the lungs, Feb. 21, 1900, aged 64 years, 1 month and 12 days. Was united in marriage to Elizabeth TOMLINSON on July 7th 1858. In the fall of 1893 he, with his wife and family, moved to Oakland and have made this their home ever since. Mr. Hough was a gentleman of many good qualities, and not the least of these was his strict honesty in all his dealings with his fellow man. He leaves to mourn his loss a loving and devoted wife and three sons and two daughters; George D., Willian H. and Harlo H., Mrs. Sarah M. DOOL and Mrs. Nancy CLARK, all of Oakland. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Friday afternoon February 23, conducted by Rev. J. C. PIKE, of Macedonia, assisted by Rev. A.D. BECKHART of Oakland." The above found this newspaper's obituary was donated by member Mikkel NELSON of Madison in a scrapbook. The obituary is not dated nor is there name, but Mike states it was from Oakland, Iowa. AUG 1995 TREDWAY and From the donated ASHLAND by Anne PRESS Budd. - VANGILDF.R newspaper, 11 Sept - EIGHINGER 1890, under Widowville news, found "The reference in a recent issue of the Press to those unknown graves near Savannah induces us to report the following bit of pioneer history, concerning wht~h not ono line haa ever been written. On the farm belonging to the heirs of Jeremiah VanGilder, recently deceased, near the center of a large field, on an eminence overlooking the beautiful valley of the Honey Creek, are the lonely graves of three early pioneers. Ofttimes in the sunny days of early youth were we wont to stray thither, but for yers we had seen only from some distance the rough stones that mark the burial place, and silently plead the remembrance of the almost forgotten dead. Des ir 0 u s 0 f s e cur in g w hat eve r d a tawas po s sib 1 e , we r e c en t 1Y r e P air e d tot h e· spot, with pencil and note book. A few stones, carelessly arranged, surround the graves. At the head of one was a slab of sandstone, nearly four feet high, upon which in rude chasracters was cut the name 'Daniel Tredway,' and the date "1822," that was all. At the head of the next was a similar stone, but it bore no inscription, although some unskilled hand had carved thereon the profile of two weeping willows. The third mound was unmarked. Our curiosity being thoroughly aroused, we called on the aged widow of the late owner of the land, and her daughter, Mrs. Ret ARNOLD, and from them we received the appended information, all of which had been told them by the deceased husband and father, whose memory was remarkably retentive. The unmarked grave is that of a Mr. Eighinger, the great-grandfather of some of the Elighingers of this township. Nothing could be learned concerning him. The others are the graves of Daniel Tredway and his wife, Sarah Tredway, who immigrated to this place near the beginning of the present century, coming from Lancaster Co., Pa. Sarah Tredway was first married to .one Jeremiah VanGilder, and they were the grand parents of the late Jeremiah VanGi lder, before mentioned. Daniel Tredway was her second husband. At the time of their coming, the dense primeval forest covered the face of the surrounding country. Here they built a cabin, near a gushing spring, ever since known as 'raccoon spring, probably so called because there remained fragments of traps and dead-falls used by the red-men to catch those animals. For a number of years they dwelt in their forest home, but in the sultry dogdays of the summer of 1822, Daniel Tredway fell sick and died, a victim of the flux. For two days preceding his death, screaming buzzards hovered near the cabin, their hungry cries, and even the fierce flapping of their wings, reaching the ears of the dying man. His body was carried perhaps thirty rods from the cabin, through the forest and tangled wildwood, and buried. His aged wife died soon thereafter, and was laid by his side. When the third grave was made we could not learn. So they slept, these fallen pioneers, beneath bending boughs, where fell the light hoof of the native deer, and the shy red fox lurked. The low, sweet music of the breezes, in the wide corridors of nature, sang their only requiem, and their only epitaph was written in the memories of a very few old settlers. After forty years had passed, Jeremiah VanGilder procured and erected the rough slabs of sandstone that to this day mark the resting-place of the first white people whose feet pressed the soil upon which our eyes rest as we write. He it was that cut the inscription mentioned; the only remaining positive record of the dead. Had it not been for those thoughtful acts of his, perhaps the farmer's plow would now turn the sod above their forgotten dust. For nearly three quarters of a century have they slept on the hillside, yet their names are unknown to many who daily see their graves. It may be said that already tradition is the only record of their struggles in the wilds of the forest. Yet such as they let fall the first hammers of civilization, which later clothed hill and slope with a ves~ure of green, and breathed a spirit of loveliness through this fertile valley, and it is with a feeling almost of reverence and veneration that we stand beside the mounds inclosing their ashes. Actuated by a desire to rescue their memories from the gulf of oblivion, we give this first published account of these primitive white inhabitants, that those who see these weather-beaten, moss-covered, antiquated grave-stones, may know the names and history of those whose dust sleeps beneath their shadows."
