The program starts on Saturday, September 12th and runs through November 8th. Like all of our programs at LMSC, the primary goal of the Fall Intramural Program is: “To provide each and every youngster with a fun filled experience in a soccer environment.” The registration deadline is August 10th. There is a late fee for all registrations postmarked after that date. LMSC will not guarantee placement for any registration postmarked after August 10. Due to the limited amount of fields that we have, many divisions will close registration before the start of the season. Information on this program can be found on page four of this newsletter. RAT PACK, MAGIC AND HEART ALL WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Each spring, many of our travel teams compete in the state cups. This year, LMSC produced three state champions, the most of any club in the state. Congratulations to the following three LMSC travel teams who were crowned state champions in 2009: LMSC Rat Pack LMSC Magic LMSC Heart Under 10 Boys Under 11 Boys Under 14 Girls Grant Myers, head coach Mark Weinmann, head coach Casey Ichniowski, head coach The Magic and Heart have each won back to back state championships as both were also crowned state champions in 2008. In other state cup action, the LMSC Denali, our Under 9A boys travel team, took second place in their state cup. The LMSC Vélez, our Under 17 boys travel team, also took second place. The LMSC Lightning, our Under 12 boys travel team, reached the semi-finals where they lost to eventual champion Lehigh Valley in overtime. Congratulations to all of our teams who participated in state cups. Page 1 RAT PACK, MAGIC AND HEART ALL CROWNED STATE CHAMPIONS The LMSC Travel Team Program produced three state champions this year, tying last year’s total. On the weekend of May 16-17, the LMSC Rat Pack (U-10 boys coached by Grant Myers), the LMSC Magic (U-11 boys coached by Mark Weinmann) and the LMSC Heart (U-14 girls coached by Casey Ichniowski) were all crowned state champions. LMSC RAT PACK - Thirty one teams entered the U-10 state cup competition. In preliminary matches, the Rat Pack defeated Yardley-Makefield 5-0, Lower Dauphin 4-0 and Coventry 8-0. These wins put the team into the state quarterfinals where they defeated Montgomery United 8-0. The semifinals saw the Rat Pack playing West Chester United, the team that beat them in last year’s Under 9 state cup final. This year would be different as Lower Merion soundly defeated last year’s state cup champions 4-0. Their opponent in the state cup final would be Panthers Revolution, from York, PA. At halftime, the score was still 0-0 but the second half would be a different story as the Rat Pack found the back of the net three times to earn the title of 2009 Under 10 boys state champions. William Cypress, Manny Reitano, Billy Coyle, Isaiah Holquist, Matthew Blackman, Konstantinos Tsokas, Cole Gallagher, and Hans Kroschwitz all contributed significantly in the midfield and upfront during this year’s State Cup pursuit. Defenders Matthew Real, Will Marks, and Evan Haas helped to collectively shutout the competition from taking shots at the RATPACK net, while goalkeeper, Mikey Kalpokas, saved every shot taken on his goal the entire spring. During the 2009 State Cup season, the LMSC Rat Pack scored 32 goals, and allowed zero. The Rat Pack became only the fifth team in LMSC history to win the indoor state cup and outdoor state cup in the same year. Congratulations to coaches Grant Myers, David Marks and Matt Schneck on a great season. LMSC MAGIC - The Magic (U11-A Boys) captured their second straight EPYSA State Cup championship. It was not an easy road for Magic. There were 40 teams in the U11 State Championship and Magic had a tough draw. During group play, they defeated Ukrainian National Atoms 2-0, Philadelphia Soccer Club 5-1, and CASA (Harrisburg) 4-2. Upon advancement, Magic faced FC Bucks in a play-in round and won 2-1, needing a goal in extra time to seal the victory. They played another tough team in the quarterfinals, Lower Dauphin, and again won by the slim margin of 2-1. Their semi-final game was against the always tough West Chester United squad and Magic played them on their home turf. Magic gave up the first goal, but roared back to score the next four and won the match 4-1. The Magic faced the very talented and well-coached Lehigh Valley United (the same team they defeated to capture the fall Delco League championship) in the finals. Magic came out strong scoring the first three goals. However, Lehigh Valley responded with three straight goals. Magic regained their composure, continued to push hard in the second half and they were able to score the winning goal on a mad scramble in front of the opposing team’s net with 30 seconds left. Congratulations to Magic players Pete Bradbeer, Justin Davis, JD Egan, Henry Farr, Griffin Fleming, Padgett Gustavson, Gian-Luca Hail, Anthony Haines, Nick Jannelli, Jerry Karalis, Josh Liss, Matt Mayer, Wyatt Page, Felix Serlin, and Cody Wax; Head Coach Mark Weinmann, and Assistant Coach Dale Haines. LMSC HEART - Despite a very tough draw, the Heart managed to win their second straight state championship. Their first round opponent was Montgomery United, the team they beat in last year’s cup final. The Heart prevailed 4-0 in a hard fought game. The state cup final against Hershey required 70 minutes of intense defense. Lower Merion struck net midway through the first half and entered half time with their 1-0 lead. The Heart pushed hard trying to open their lead with a strong attack in the early part of the second half, but the Hershey keeper was up to the task turning back five scoring opportunities to keep the score at 1-0. The lead held up through the second half and earned the Lower Merion Heart a well deserved defense of its state cup crown. During the entire state cup tournament, the Heart did not allow a single goal, outscoring their opponents by a total of 16 goals to zero. Congratulations to all of the dedicated Lower Merion Heart players – Julianna Bradley, Elaine Byerly, Kayla Cunningham, Morgan Elliott, Carly Ichniowski, Sophie Katz, Anna Ludwick, Katelyn McKenna, Emily Morgan, Moira Petrie, Paige Phillips, Nanci Selig, Alex Srolis, Salina Williford, Martha Zeller and Mary Grace Zeller – for the dedication, progress throughout the year, and noteworthy accomplishments. The Heart will now go to represent Pennsylvania in this summer’s U.S. Region One Championship tournament. The program is open to boys and girls born in 1996 through 2005. The 2009 season will be our 42nd season. LMSC is affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation. The season will start on Saturday, September 12 and run through November 8. All games and practices will be held at fields within Lower Merion Township. In 2008, we had over 1700 players participate in the Fall Intramural Program. An additional 600 players ages 8-18 play in the very prestigious LMSC Travel Team Program. For all divisions, except our youngest divisions (Atoms, Neutrons and Pee-Wee Divisions) and the Special Needs Division, there will be a late fee for registrations received after August 10th. We also cannot guarantee that we will be able to place a player on a team if his / her registration is received after August 10. This deadline is necessary so that we will have enough time to properly make team assignments and schedules for the 1700 plus players that we anticipate again having. To find out which divisions still have openings, please check our website (www.lmsc.net). We will constantly update the site to show which players have been accepted into the Fall Intramural Program as well as show how many openings remain in each division. If the requested division is full, the registrant will be put on a waiting list or have their registration check returned. ABOUT THE FALL INTRAMURAL PROGRAM The Fall Intramural Program is divided into 14 different divisions based on age and gender. Each division uses one of three different formats, each designed to maximize skill development, obtain an optimal competitive level and, most importantly, maximize the amount of fun that each child has during the season. The objective of all our programs is "to provide each and every child with a fun filled experience in a soccer environment." Our number one goal is fun, our number two goal is to develop each player's skills so that he/she may progress to higher levels of play in the future. We try to keep the winning and losing aspect in check for all players, and we expect this philosophy to be followed by each players' parents as well as other spectators at games. Children do NOT have to follow the recommended guidelines for our age groups. They may play up in an older division or down in a younger division if the parents see fit. (This is NOT allowed in the Travel Team Program). One of the primary purposes of the LMSC Intramural Program is to develop the more talented and enthusiastic players for the LMSC Travel Team Program. We offer boys and girls travel teams starting at Under 9 and going up through Under 19. We have up to four travel teams in each age group. Since 1989, LMSC Travel Teams have won 28 State Championships. Children with sufficient athletic ability and soccer interest should give serious consideration to trying out for the Travel Team Program when they are old enough. Travel team players, unlike intramural players, generally progress to high school varsity teams and beyond. LMSC is a not-for-profit entity. It is the ONLY local area soccer program that is affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation, meaning that it is the ONLY local area program that can offer a Travel Team Program where the more talented and athletic youngsters can aspire to higher levels of play. Six LMSC players have gone on to play professionally, including two currently playing in Major League Soccer. One former LMSC travel team player represented the USA on the 2006 Men’s World Cup team and the 2000 Olympic team. Three former LMSC players have represented our country on National Youth Teams. Another former LMSC player, who holds dual citizenship, was a member of Spain’s Under 18 Women’s National Team. Many of our players have gone on to play in the Olympic Development Program and Division One college soccer. Page 4 INFORMATION ON THE VARIOUS AGE DIVISIONS OUR YOUNGEST AGE DIVISIONS PEE-WEES DIVISION: ATOMS DIVISION: NEUTRONS DIVISION: Children born in 2005 Boys born in 2004 Girls born in 2004 Sundays: Boys: 10:00, 12:30, 3:00 Girls: 11:15, 1:45 Saturdays at 9:15, 11:45, 2:15 and 3:30 Saturdays at 10:30 and 1:00 The emphasis of our Youngest Age Divisions is on enjoyment of the game and basic skill development. Players meet once a week. The players will be led through a 25 minute skills clinic, followed by games of 4 vs. 4 on scaled down fields to maximize player participation. A size 3 ball is used. These age groups use a "pickup soccer" format where players are randomly placed on different teams each week. This is done in order to minimize the pressures of winning and losing, thereby allowing each child to enjoy the game in a stress-free environment. Because of the small numbers of players on each team, we need to have a large number of coaches in each division. Over 90 percent of our coaches are parents of the players. Parents are asked to give consideration to volunteering to coach. You do not need to have playing experience to be a coach. At LMSC, we set aside a large percentage of our budget for coaching materials, coaching clinics, etc. We believe that the best way to have a successful program is to have coaches who are enthusiastic and understand their roles and responsibilities. While registration will NOT close for these age groups, many of the time slots will close by August 1st. OUR MIDDLE AGE DIVISIONS BANTAMS DIVISION: MICRONS DIVISION: JUNIORS DIVISION: QUASARS DIVISION: INTERMEDIATES DIVISION: PROTONS DIVISION: Boys born in 2003 Girls born in 2003 Boys born in 2002 Girls born in 2002 Boys born in 2001 Girls born in 2001 The emphasis of our Middle Age Divisions is on enjoyment of the game, skill development and the introduction of being a part of a "team." Each player is assigned to a team of up to 14 players for the season. All teams play a nine game schedule, mostly on Saturdays with one or more Sunday afternoon games. Two simultaneous 5 vs. 5 games are played. The Intermediates and Protons use a size 4 soccer ball, the other divisions use a size 3 ball. Each team has one practice a week (held on a weeknight or Sunday afternoon, as determined by the coach). Game times will vary each Saturday and can start as early as 8:30 AM or as late as 5:00 PM. Game times for all teams will be different each week. Be sure to note on the registration any night that you have conflicts with other fall activities. This will enable us to put each child on a team that will not practice on nights where there will be a conflict. Some divisions will close out early due to the limited number of parents who volunteer as head coaches. OUR OLDEST AGE DIVISIONS SENIORS DIVISION: MAJORS DIVISION: ELECTRONS DIVISION: COSMOS DIVISION: Boys born in 1999 and 2000 Boys born in 1996, 1997 and 1998 Girls born in 1999 and 2000 Girls born in 1996, 1997 and 1998 Our Oldest Age Divisions are for children who are old enough to play in the LMSC Travel Team Program but who either did not make a travel team or who chose to stay in the Intramural Program. All teams will play a nine game schedule. Most games will be played on Saturdays with one or more Sunday games possible. Each team has one practice a week (held on a weeknight or Sunday afternoon, as determined by the coach). Game times will vary each Saturday and can start as early as 8:30 AM or as late as 5:00 PM. Game times for all teams will be different each week. Be sure to note on your registration form any night that you have conflicts with other fall activities. This will enable us to put you on a team that does not practice on those nights. Seniors and Electrons Divisions: Games are played 8 vs. 8, use a size 4 all and have a maximum of 14 players on a team. Standings are not kept, there are no end of season playoffs. Majors and Cosmos Divisions: Games are played full sided 11 vs. 11 soccer, use a size 5 ball and have a maximum of 18 players on a team. Standings are kept during the season and playoffs are held at the end of the season to determine a champion. Children born in 1995 will NOT be accepted into either of these age groups. Page 5 (Continued from page 5) SPECIAL NEEDS DIVISION This program is geared toward children ages 6-15 with a wide variety of physical and mental limitations. To find out more about this program, or to determine whether a particular child would be suited for the Special Needs Division, please e-mail us at: [email protected] . OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE INTRAMURAL PROGRAM EQUIPMENT By rule of the United States Soccer Federation, ALL players MUST wear shin guards to both practices and games. For safety reasons, soccer shoes are strongly recommended instead of sneakers. Intramural players will receive their soccer jersey at their first practice of the season. Intramural players can purchase a pair of our logoed LMSC navy soccer shorts and white soccer socks at Sneaky Pete's (5 West Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore). Sneaky Pete's also carries a full line of youth shin guards and soccer shoes, as well as soccer balls. Sneaky Pete’s also sells LMSC logoed soccer balls, sweat shirts, sweat pants and club jackets. FINANCIAL AID Our program is not-for-profit. Its purpose is to provide all soccer loving youngsters with a chance to play. Intramural players who are in need of financial assistance for the season may request this on their registration form. One of the goals of LMSC is to not have any child turn away from the intramural program for financial reasons. CAR POOL AND TEAMMATE REQUESTS We will attempt to honor car pool and teammate requests written on the registration form. We cannot guarantee that car pool requests or teammate requests will be honored since our first priority is to make teams within each division as fair and balanced as possible. Car pool requests may only be made with players in the SAME division. We will NOT switch players at the start of the season to different teams for this purpose, requests MUST be stated on the registration form. You may list a MAXIMUM of three people for teammate requests. If a player has a good friend who he or she would like to be placed with, please list him or her in this section of the registration form. We will also attempt, but not guarantee any specific coach requests as well. Car pool, teammate and coach requests received after August 10th will most likely not be honored since we must begin the difficult task of making team assignments at that time. COACHING VOLUNTEERS Our program is dependent on having parents of players volunteer as coaches. PLEASE give consideration to volunteering as a coach, thank you. We provide head coaches with ample coaching material in order to make the program a success. You do not need to have played the game, you only need to have an interest in working with a small group of children and the ability to stay one or two steps ahead of them in learning the game. We also need people to volunteer to be Division Commissioners. Their responsibilities are administrative, i.e., making team assignments for the older divisions, switching players from one team to another when necessary, contacting division coaches in the event of rainouts, distributing end of season trophies, etc. If you are interested in serving as a Division Commissioner, head coach or assistant coach , PLEASE indicate this on your registration. Also, if you are planning on coaching, please send in your registration form AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated so we can mail coaching materials, make coaching assignments, etc. Page 6 FIELD SITES Several school district and township fields will be closed this year for renovations. As a result, we do not know at the present time which divisions will play at which field locations. We anticipate that all divisions will be playing at fields inside of Lower Merion Township, but we do not know which divisions will play where. Our web page will provide this information as soon as we know what fields are available for the fall season. GAME TIMES As mentioned, the Atoms, Neutrons and PeeWee Divisions will each have different time slots as follows: Atoms: Neutrons: Pee-Wees Division: Saturdays At: 9:15 Saturdays At: 10:30 Sundays - Boys Play At: 10:00 Sundays - Girls Play At: 11:15 11:45 1:00 12:30 1:45 2:15 3:30 Special Needs: Saturdays, tentatively at 8:45 AM at a field location to be determined. Some games will be in the morning, some in the afternoon. We CANNOT place a player on a team that has only early games or only late games. Game times for each team will be different each week. 3:00 TIME SLOTS CLOSING OUT The following divisions will close out by August 1st: Atoms Division 9:15 and 11:45 time slots, the 10:30 Neutrons Division time slot and the 10:00 and 11:15 Pee-Wees Division time slots. Players may not register for those time slots after August 1st. All other time slots will remain open, registrations will be accepted during the season for the other time slots. Please check our web page before registering to see which time slots still have openings for the Atoms, Neutrons and PeeWees divisions. IF WE DO NOT GET ENOUGH COACHES IN A PARTICULAR DIVISION, WE WILL HAVE TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS WHO WE CAN ACCEPT INTO THAT DIVISION. PLEASE GIVE CONSIDERATION TO COACHING!!! Adults who volunteer to coach in a particular division will have their child assigned to their team, unless specifically requested not to. Page 8 LMSC HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD For the past three years, an anonymous donor from within our LMSC family generously created a college scholarship awarded to two LMSC people who will be entering their freshman year in college. In 2007, the winners were Becca Greenberg (McGill University in Canada) and Andrew Meiers (Valley Forge Military College). In 2008, the winners were Tom Kalpokas (LaSalle University) and Brooke Wieczorek (University of Pittsburgh). Each of these winners were awarded a $2500 scholarship. The criteria for the award is that the winners must be current or former LMSC players, referees or field crew workers who helped make LMSC a stronger organization. We are pleased to announce that the same anonymous donor has stepped forward again to donate two $2500 scholarships to LMSC people who will be entering their freshman year in college. The 2009 award winners are Danny DiLullo and Jennifer Gangl. Danny was a long time player for the LMSC Hammerheads and served many years as an intramural referee and field crew worker. Last fall, Danny was the 2nd MVP of the Central League while playing at Lower Merion High School. Danny was named to the All State High School Team. Danny will be attending James Madison University this fall and will be playing on the men’s soccer team there. Jennifer played travel team soccer for the LMSC Stingrays for many years Last fall, Jennifer was MVP of the Central League and an all state selection. This past winter, Jennifer served as an assistant coach for our Under 8 Girls Developmental Program. She will be attending West Chester University in the fall and playing on the women’s soccer team there. LMSC would like to wish Danny and Jennifer the best of luck at college this year. We also would like to thank them for their many years of service to our organization. LMSC would also like to thank our anonymous donor for again funding this scholarship and for helping with the education of our LMSC alumni. She had just been selected for one of our LMSC travel teams. Rachel’s father, Robert Savett, coached in LMSC for over ten years. To honor the memory of Rachel, LMSC created a scholarship fund in her name. The scholarship is awarded each year to a former LMSC player, referee or field crew person who is currently in college. This year’s winner of the scholarship is Dan Greenberg, a long time player in LMSC. Dan has served as one of our referee assignors for the intramural program for many seasons and has done a tremendous job in that position. LMSC will be awarding Dan a $1000 scholarship in memory of Rachel Savett. Our thanks to everyone who contributed to this program. These players will train in the fall and winter under the guidance of the LMSC coaching staff. The purpose of the program is to offer our top seven year old players an opportunity to develop their skills and increase their knowledge of the game so that they will be ready to tryout for the Travel Team Program the following year. Unlike the LMSC Fall Intramural Program, the Under 8 Academy will train two times a week in the fall and play games on a third day. At the end of the fall season, each team will compete in one or more tournaments against Under 8 age teams from other clubs. In the winter, the teams will practice indoors and compete in local area indoor travel team leagues. The Under 8 girls Academy Program will be headed up by Casey Ichniowski, head coach for the Under 15 LMSC Heart who were crowned state championships in both 2008 and 2009. Casey has been coaching in LMSC for over nine years now. He is a two time winner of the LMSC Coach Of The Year Award (2001 and 2003). The Under 8 boys Academy Program will be headed up by Miguel Nuila, head coach for the LMSC Vélez, our Under 8 boys, who were state champions in 2004 and 2008. The Vélez were also Region One USA champions in 2008. Miguel has been coaching in the LMSC Travel Team Program for over eleven years. Miguel was voted LMSC Boys Travel Team Coach Of The Year in 1999 and LMSC Girls Coach Of The Year in 2007. Since 1989, LMSC has had 85 teams reach the semifinals of State Cups. 28 of those teams have been crowned State Champions. Five teams have won the Indoor State Cup and Outdoor State Cup in the same year: the 2009 Under 10 boys Rat Pack, the 2004 Under 12 boys Vélez, the 2003 Under 12 boys Hammerheads, the 2002 Under 11 boys Hammerheads and the 1990 Under 13 boys Gorillas.
