TEXT Field Trip THE PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT PRESENTS YESTER-DAZE – To continue the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of elc International School, the Performing Arts Department ventured once more into the world of musical theatre. This time, an original production, “YESTER-DAZE – The 80’s Musical!” was created and performed on 2 nd & 3rd March, 2012, at Pentas 2, KLPAC. Over 20 great songs from the 1980’s filled the programme, with Teachers and Students (from Years 4 to 11) singing, dancing and acting in an exciting and energetic comedy-drama. The students in the cast, band and crew made us all very proud and showed us just how much amazing talent we have at elc! There were so many great moments! I know all those involved really do wish we could go back to KLPAC and relive this extraordinary experience over and over again… Mr Martin Head of Performing Arts UPPER PRIMARY STUDENTS IN THE CAST Naomi Chai, Sabrina Shahaniz, Katharina Kiesel, Larissa Siebel, Hannah Newman, Sabrina Bahsoon, Daniella Monfils, Mia Cavaliero, Daniel Liew & Natalya Rezza HOMEROOM ASSEMBLY TOPIC: Poetry Recitation Year Group/Class: 3 Red Curriculum Link/s: English 3 Red performed a poem ‘My Shadow’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. Children were excited about the class assembly right from the start and practiced enthusiastically. As the date drew near, everyone looked forward to the presentation with much anticipation. The hard work of the children was rewarded with a flawless performance. Teachers and children present at the assembly were impressed as every child in 3 Red memorized all four verses of the poem! Great job, 3 Red! HOMEROOM ASSEMBLY TOPIC: Types of Materials Year Group/Class: 3 Grey Curriculum Link/s: Science The topic of this assembly was “Types of Materials”. The students were prepared to present information about various types of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, paper and fabric. The students described the properties, the uses of these materials and ways to recycle these materials in order to save the earth. All the students of Y3 Grey participated actively and they did a wonderful job. HOMEROOM ASSEMBLY TOPIC: Respect Year Group/Class: 3 White Curriculum Link/s: Music, Drama, Art and PSHE 3 White’s assembly was all about RESPECT! They wanted to show how students behave while on assembly. Wonderful hand-made paper plate puppets were used to re-enact a school assembly. The puppets showed the wrong way and the right way to behave during assembly - which had the whole of Upper Primary laughing while sharing a valuable message. This message was then made even clearer as the students put on their caps and their sunglasses and rapped about respect. HOMEROOM ASSEMBLY TOPIC: Rainbow Year Group/Class: 4 White Curriculum Link/s: PSHE The students did a play about treating everyone equally despite their differences. On the 16th of March 2012, 51 elc Prefects set off for a 3 Day/2 Night camp at Teratak Nalys Eco Resort and Equestrian Park. The highlight of the first day was visiting an Orang Asli kampung and a fishing pond. Day 2 was long and tiring, starting with a hike up to a cave, high in the mountains. After a shower, everyone ate dinner and gathered around the karaoke area for “Prefect Camp Idol” which featured many different people showcasing their talents. The last day of Prefect Camp was packed with activities – flying fox, survival challenge, horse riding and paintball. The challenges we faced, the lessons we learned all helped the Prefects as a group to trust one another, to know each other’s strengths and to become better leaders. ~ Leong Jo Yie, Year 6 Grey Lower Primary has been holding Student Assemblies every Wednesday morning. Here is what we have done. In Topic work, Reception classes have been learning about plants. The students learnt to recognise differences in leaves (shapes, types, colours). Reception Red recited a poem entitled ‘Leaf’ with actions. They did a great job and had lots of fun doing it! Reception Grey children recited a poem called Daddy’s Seaside Counting Poem which focussed on our Numeracy lessons. While reciting the poem, children had to count while showing the correct number of fingers as well as acting out the words of the poem. They did a great job. Reception White were bursting with energy, unable to contain their excitement as they practiced relentlessly each day for their assembly performance. They had learned how plants and flowers grow during their Topic lesson and wanted to share their findings with their friends. They sang: “Here’s a seed in a dark, dark ground.” Together with their singing they made some props all by themselves and were proud of what they did. Year 1 Red acted out the story of The Enormous Turnip for our assembly. Some of the children had been the narrators while some acted out the characters from the story. The children enjoyed playing the different characters; it also made them realize how important team work is. Year 1 Grey students talked about their own ambitions and how they would work to achieve that. Some were dressed up a like a doctor, a teacher, a soldier etc Year 1 White assembly this term was about “Wild Animals”. It related to Topic work on animals. Some of the students talked about animals being carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, naming examples from each group. All the students then danced to the song “Walking through the Jungle”. Year 1 White Year 2 had the privilege of having their assembly during Chinese New year and thus sang a Chinese New Year song entitled “Gong Xi Gong Xi” in Mandarin, Malay and English language with simple actions. They also performed a Dragon Dance in conjunction with the celebrations of the Chinese Lunar year, which is also the year of the Dragon. The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac which consists of 12 Animal signs. The Dragon Dance is popular during the CNY, as the Chinese believe the celestial Dragon brings good luck to everyone. The PE Dept had devised a fun-filled event for us, taking an entirely different approach to our Sports Days of previous years. This year, though it was not a competitive event, it was an opportunity for students to perform a series of athletic and core skills activities they had been learning in PE, in a fun way. The activity stations for the morning were: Beanbag Race, Hoop Skipping, Obstacle Course, BBQ Race, Beanbag Throw, Slalom Relay, Hat Balance, Space Hoppers, Bat and Beanbag Race, and Straight Sprints. Each class spent eight minutes at each station, showing their skills to their parents, and then moved on to the next station. Once the students had finished a station, parents were invited to join in and have a go themselves – many finding it wasn’t as easy as it looked! The weather was kind to us, and the event went very well, with students, teachers and parents enjoying the fun. The Lower Primary teachers would like to thank the PE staff for this wellorganised Sports Day, and the parents for being such wonderful sports! On Tuesday 20 March, Lower Primary and Year 3 visited PJLA Theatre to watch The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. Performed by the fabulous Blunderbus Theatre Company, this was the adventure of Plop, the baby barn owl, who journeyed into the night-time world of campfires, fireworks and moonlight. Initially scared of the nighttime, Plop learned something new about the dark each night: dark is exciting, dark is kind, dark is fun, dark is necessary, dark is fascinating, dark is wonderful and dark is beautiful. The performance was very interactive, with lots of calling out, chasing around and water-spraying. Even Mr Howie was roped into the fun, as he was elected to remind Plop how to fly – “Left wing, right wing, flap, flap, flap!” Returning back to school, the students wrote about Plop and his discoveries, and their wonderful trip to meet him.
