Year 5 Father and Son Camp
Last weekend, the boys and dads of Year 5 enjoyed a hectic weekend of fun activities that included indoor rock climbing, low ropes, billycart making and riding the waterslide.
The boys and their dads went home a bit tired, but certainly
with great memories and stories. The beautifully fine and
warm weather enabled all to enjoy the water and the facilities at Deer Park which is part of the Anglican Youthworks
site in the Royal National Park. Congratulations to all boys
and their dads for a positive and happy weekend. I would
also like to thank Mr Harrington, Mr Larby and Mr Knight for
their work over the weekend to support this important
event.

Start of Term 4
A reminder that Term 4 commences next term on Tuesday
6 October, after the Monday public holiday. Please also
note that the children will change into their summer uniform
for the first day of Term 4.

Junior Prep Proms
Congratulations to all boys who performed in the Prep
Proms this week. As you are aware this was a very special
evening for the boys in Years 3 and 4. The enthusiasm,
talent and energy of all performers were inspiring. I would
like to thank all the Preparatory School staff for their support of this event. The Prep Proms takes all year to prepare. Mrs Macaulay, Miss Janssen, Mrs Hellmers and the
music staff should be very pleased with the performances.
Well done to all performers! We are now looking forward to
the Years 5 & 6 Proms next term.
Public Speaking Competition
The students, teachers and guests at this week’s North
Sydney Assembly were treated to some captivating
speeches by our four grade winners in this year’s Public
Speaking Competition. Congratulations to Charlie Mattison
(3K), Tom Wymond (4D), George Leary (5P) and Dylan
Reid (6R), who performed so wonderfully for the audience,
and congratulations also to all of the finalists who received
special certificates at the Assembly.
Prep Student Successes
Last week, six Prep boys competed at the CIS Athletics
Carnival at Homebush. Well done to Jack Stokeld, Charlie
Cole, Ben Moore, George Chapman, Charlie Wilson and
James O’Donnell who achieved this milestone. Special
mention and congratulations to Jack Stokeld (800m) and
Ben Moore (High Jump) who placed in their events and
won selection for NSW CIS to compete at the NSW PSSA
Athletics carnival in October. Well done Jack and Ben.
In Snowsports, two Prep boys competed in the Australian
Interschools National Championships last week – Marcel
Ewen in the Division 5 Alpine Giant Slalom and Lachlan
Whitehead in the Division 4 Moguls. What a great achievement! Special congratulations to Lachlan Whitehead who
placed 4th in his race.
James Wong from Year 3 took part in a Claymation event
recently with his sister Sophia. The pair wrote a wonderful
story which they then turned into a short Claymation movie.
The judges were so impressed that the work was entered

Junior Proms
What an evening it was! A packed Smith Auditorium
crowd was treated to a number of sublime performances from our Prep boys. The members of the Concert
Band, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Band,
String Quartet and Chapel Choir showed us the fruit of
their hard work by performing outstanding renditions of
a number of familiar pieces. The boys in Years 3 and 4
and our Elective Dance group wowed the audience in
the second half of the show with their energy and timing. Of course, a night of this magnitude isn’t possible
without the assistance of many people; I’d particularly
like to thank Stephanie Janssen, Kirsten Macaulay,
Judy Hellmers, Biljana Mitrovic, Lisa Steiner and Sandy
Robertson for their dedication and professionalism in
preparing the boys for the evening.
Commencement of Term 4 – Summer Uniform
Term 4 begins for students on Tuesday 6 October.
Parents are asked to take whatever steps necessary to
ensure that your son returns to school on the first day
next term with immaculate appearance which is then
maintained throughout the term. This includes an appropriate haircut and shoes that are shined, repaired if necessary and properly laced. I remind boys and parents that
boys are expected to be dressed in their summer uniform for the duration of Term 4.
Thank You
Thank you to all parents who have assisted in various
programmes at the school this term. Whether it be in
coaching sport, refereeing, taking reading groups, covering books in the library or working on an American Tea
stall we are most appreciative of the support of our parent
body.
Quality Class Award
Congratulations to 3K who won the Quality Class Award
on a count back. Well done to all the boys for their consistent hard work and exemplary behaviour.
I wish all children and families of the Preparatory School
a restful and refreshing holiday.
Adam Larby
Deputy Head of Shore Preparatory School - North Sydney
Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships 2015
The Snowsports National Championships were held at Mt
Buller in Victoria last week just as the snow started to melt
in the spring weather. Shore Prep was represented by Marcel Ewen (Yr 4) in Alpine and Lachlan Whitehead (Yr 6) in
Moguls. Congratulations to Lachlan who came 4th overall
and Marcel who placed 25th in their Divisions.
More than 15,000 competitors representing 3,000 schools
participated during the 2015 season. Thanks again to the
Shore Prep boys who competed; their parents; Mrs Curnow
who supported us at the Sydney Championships in the July
school holidays; and to Mr Payne, the Senior School Master-in-Charge of Snowsports, who organised and encouraged us at every event. With so many new skiers and
snowboarders from Shore Prep starting out this year, 2016
is looking good. New participants are always welcome.
Look out for details of the 2015 Snowsports Team Dinner
to be held during Term 4.

Charities - World Vision & St Lucy’s
Thank you to the Year 6 charity leaders, Miss Schlunke,
Miss Dickson and all of the boys and families who have
supported this term’s charities through the Chapel collection and special events. We trust and pray that the considerable sums raised will be used to benefit families in
Rwanda and the children at St Lucy’s school.
Medallions of Excellence
Congratulations to the following boys who were awarded
their Medallion of Excellence at Monday’s assembly, Hugo
Brown, Benjamin Brunker, Paul Davison, Daniel Fatseas,
Zac Hall, Will Harding, Will Harvey, Sam Hodgson, Hamish Hunter, Nicholas Laforest, Ashton Lyne, Charlie Manuell, Harrison McCorkell, Nixon Muhlbauer, Toby
Pilbeam, Daniel Ryan, Nicholas Stratton and Adrian
Thompson. Boys in Year 6 can receive this award once
they have reached 16 or 32 awards (depending on when
they started at the Prep). The presentation of the medallions at Assembly is to acknowledge and recognise their
hard work, service and consistency over their time at the
Prep school. Well done boys.
After School Clubs – Term 4
Many application forms for Term 4 After School Clubs
have been returned. Clubs will commence in the second
week of term. If you are yet to do so, please return your
form in the first days of next term.

Swimming School
Next term, K,1,2 will hold its annual 10-day intensive swimming school programme. This will be held at Willoughby
Leisure Centre. The programme will commence on Monday, 26 October and conclude on Friday, 6 November. Sessions will be conducted by swimming instructors from
Willoughby Leisure Centre and class teachers will attend for
supervision of the children. Further details will be sent
home at the beginning of next term.
Life Education
This week we enjoyed hearing about some healthy lifestyle
tips form Healthy Harold. The girls and boys had a great
time visiting the Life Education mobile learning centre.
Please ask your child what he/she learnt with Healthy Harold this week.
Labelling Uniform
The holidays are a great time to check your child’s Summer
uniform to ensure it is labelled with the correct name. Hats,
jackets and jumpers often go home with a different child
during term and the owner can be left without it for some
time. Please take a moment to ensure that all items of uniform are clearly labelled, especially with the swimming programme coming up next term.
Term 4 Assemblies
Thank you Year 2C for presenting your assembly for us this
week. There will be no assembly on the first Wednesday of
next term. The dates of the final assemblies for next term
will be published in the community calendar. Congratulations to the boys in 1M for receiving the final Quality Class
of the Week Award for Term 3! Well done also to all the
children in K,1,2 for being crowned our Chapel Money
Champions for this week. What a great way to finish the
term!
Thank You
On behalf of the staff I would like to thank all families for
their support during a very busy yet productive Term 3. To
complement the dynamic learning that has taken place in
the classrooms, we have seen the children actively engage
in excursions, assemblies, performances and sports events.
May I take this opportunity to wish you all an enjoyable and
relaxing break, and trust you are able to have an especially
rewarding time with your children.

Summer Programme
With the welcome arrival of the warmer weather we have
now commenced the summer programme. This means
that we will enjoy the outdoor garden area during the earlier part of the day then transition into the rooms as the
sun UV gets stronger. To ensure the children are well
protected from the sun, please apply sunscreen to your
child as you arrive to the ELC each day.
Transition to Kindergarten
An important skill for children to have mastered before
they start Kindergarten is being able to write their own
name. Children will be asked to do this often and when
they are able to do this with ease they feel capable and
able to ‘do school’. As children move from mark making
to writing recognisable letters, using correct case and correct letter formation is important to their success. A
handy tip when writing your child’s name is to use correct
case rather than capitals, this will reinforce the correct
formation of their name.
In NSW children learn to write using NSW foundation
handwriting. Handouts will be provided in the coming
weeks for children to take home that illustrate the correct
way to form both capital and lower case letters. These will
be useful as you guide children when they practice their
writing.
Start Dates for 2016
Recently I have had a few questions regarding the ELC
start dates for 2016. So that you are best able to plan
