UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR 2016
A number of universities offer valuable scholarships and we have had a high success rate for our applications over
recent years. Year 12 boys towards the top of the Shore Order of Academic Merit are encouraged to apply and will
need to start the application as soon as possible.
Applications for University of Sydney ‘Sydney Scholars Awards Program’
These Scholarships are awarded to students who achieve a minimum ATAR of 95.00 in conjunction with a
personal statement. Refer to the information sheet via http://sydney.edu.au/scholarships/How%20to%
20apply%20for%20Sydney%20Scholars%20Awards%202016.pdf
Applications for scholarships to University of Sydney are to be submitted online only. Applicants will need to
submit a number of their school reports. Whilst a School reference is not compulsory, it can be submitted online
with the School Report, all as one single pdf file. This reference should be obtained from a boy’s Housemaster. The
online applications can be accessed via http://sydney.edu.au/scholarships/ and following the links
Future Students

Applications to other Universities – Hard Copy Applications
 Year 12 boys interested in applying must download the application forms and complete them, providing all
necessary supporting documentation. This will usually include a School reference (Housemaster), personal

Round 3 of the GPS Debating competition offered
some passionate clashes with Riverview on
international affairs. The standard of debating
within this school continues to improve as the topics
have increased in difficulty, particularly for the
junior years. Year 7 and 8 students grappled with
the nutty topic ‘that we should only give aid to
democracies’; Year 9 were dealt a wordy hand with
the topic ‘That United Nations members who don't
meet their obligations under international treaties
should not be allowed to serve on the Security
Council.’ Congratulations to the 9Bs, 8As and 8Bs
on their wins.
The Year 10Bs – Ben Jefferson, Stanley Luk, Tim
Ogborne and Oliver Dixon – had a standout
debate. All speakers were eloquent and
demonstrated a superior understanding of the topic
‘that extreme poverty should be an adequate reason
to seek asylum.’ The debate became a clash of
ethics and morality with an impressive discussion of
how best to end world poverty. The adjudicator
remarked on the clarity of ideas expressed by the
team. Congratulations to them and their colleagues
in the 10As who also took home victory on the
night.
The panel of adjudicators was split on the
outcome of the 1sts debate – unfortunately on
balance leaning towards Riverview. The 2nds put
in a good performance but also went down to the
opposition. Well done to the 3rds – Lucas
Humbel, Basil Jones, Vinay Kancharla on their
victory

2015 AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS
SCIENCE COMPETITION
In 2015, more than 2 million students took part in the world's largest science competition, organised by the
University of New South Wales. Shore was represented well among the top students from Australia and
New Zealand. A total of 272 Shore boys from Years 7 to 12 entered the competition. Not everyone can
perform at this elite level and all students who gave of their best on the day can be proud of their
achievements. This year, only the streamed sets participated in the competition. Boys attained a total of
114 (131 in 2014) Credits (top 30% in the state), 80 (89 in 2014) Distinctions (top 10% in the state) and 29
(22 in 2014) High Distinctions (top 1% in the state).
There were some very good individual results. The following students gained High Distinctions (see the
full list below). Year 7 student, L Ward scored 42 out of 45, closely followed by T Law (41) then E Nam
and J Starling (both on 40). Year 8 students: J Choi (43), J Lin (42) and D Adam-Smith, M Barrett and W
Cant (all 41) scored the top marks. Year 9 student S Zhang top scored with 42 closely followed by A Beale
(41). In Year 10, J Wang gained a High Distinction with a score of 41 followed by C Lee and C Wang
both scoring 40. In Year 11, J Abel obtained a High Distinction with a score of 38. H Laithwaite top
scored in the Distinction band with 36 followed by M Dennis (34). Results for Year 12 were very good
with J Dong obtaining a High Distinction (40). A Mazay and H Morgan in Year 12 scored Distinctions
(both on 37).

In Term II, 2015 Shore entered students into the Australian History Competition. This competition is run
across Australia and tests students’ on broad range of historical knowledge, and their historical skills.
 Boys in the Sets 1 & 2 of Year 7 actually competed in the Year 8 competition where they performed
extremely well with half the boys being awarded either Distinctions or High Distinctions. This
placed them in the top 5% or 15% of Year 8 students!
 In Year 10 boys again outperformed the state with 12% of Shore boys being placed in the top 5% of
the state.
 Nearly 100 boys were awarded credit or merit certificates which placed them in the top 30% or 50%
of state.

Shore History
Tour of Indochina
April Holidays 2016
Shore’s History tour of Vietnam and Cambodia will
be running again in 2016. The tour visits the major
areas of interest in relation to the Vietnam War and
the Khmer Rouge years in Cambodia. In Vietnam
we will explore Hanoi via cyclo and see ‘Uncle Ho’
in the flesh before travelling north to stay with
villagers in the Mai Chau valley. From Hanoi we
then travel south via the overnight Reunification
Express and tour the DMZ in order to better
understand wartime military strategy. Continuing
south, we experience the energy of Saigon,
including a crawl through the Cu Chi Tunnels. In
Cambodia we explore Phnom Penh and the grisly
Killing Fields. The tour concludes with the aweinspiring Angkor Wat temples and a visit to the
Sunrise Children’s Village orphanage.
The tour is open to boys currently in Years 7, 8, 9
and 10. Depending on interest levels, the tour will
either be for 16 or 24 students. The expected
departure date is April 9 and the arrival home date
is April 20. The expected cost is $4300, which will
include all transport, some meals, travel insurance,
accommodation, visas, guides, taxes and entry fees.
Expressions of interest to Mr Paterson on 99004766
or [email protected]
Holiday Workshops will be offered, from
Thursday 17th September, to Year 11 and 12 boys
studying for the HSC in the upcoming vacation.
These have proven successful in providing boys
with structure which complements their individual
study programmes.
Each 3 hour Holiday Workshop session will
consist of coverage of important HSC topics in
that subject. A mix of strategies will be used in
order to maximise learning: revision lecture,
structured tutorial and discussion. Workshops
will generally be limited to a minimum of 7 and a
maximum of approximately 20 boys. A fee of
$60 (which includes GST) will be charged per (3
hour) workshop, which represents excellent value
compared to externally run HSC lecture courses.
Boys are encouraged strongly to make good use
of the workshops and are expected to stay to the
end of each workshop.
A selection form will be e-mailed to each boy in
Year 12 and is to be returned to Ms. Lamb,
Director of Studies Secretary. Boys may choose
as many sessions as they like. Every attempt will
be made to accommodate all boys, but it might be
necessary to restrict the number of boys in a
particular workshop, depending upon demand.
This will be done on a first come first served
basis.
Charges will be made to the next fees statement
on a no-refund basis.
A list of all available workshops will be available
on the internet on the school’s Website on
Friday, 28th August:
http://www.shore.nsw.edu.au :
Curriculum/Holiday Workshops.
Boys will not be required to wear school uniform.
Boys are not encouraged to drive to school for the
workshops. However, if they do drive they are
not allowed to park in the front driveway
under any circumstances.
We do hope that each boy will participate in the
workshops, which, according to boys in the
Classes of 1999-2014, contributed well to their
success at the HSC
examinations.

Throughout the year a number of our boys need helpto complete Assessments or sit Exams
Exams are stressful at the best of times, imagine how much more stressful it becomes if you can’t read or
write due to a medical condition or accidental broken limb. Knowing that there is a helping hand can
relieve some of that stress.
The Academic Support Department is currently looking for volunteers to scribe for Years 7-12.
Assessments generally last 40 mins whilst exams can vary between 40 to 80 mins in Years 7-9, 1-2 hours
in Years 10-12 and may be up to 3 hours in the HSC.
From time to time we are also in need of volunteers to scribe for Mathematics 2 Unit and 3 Unit.
Volunteers for scribing in Mathematics should have at least completed Mathematics 2 Unit at the HSC.
Please consider becoming a scribe. It is an invaluable role in the school and one that is extremely
rewarding. You may be able to help with several exams or just one. Any amount of time given is greatly
appreciated by the boys.
No experience is necessary and instructions are given before you start

Congratulations and thank you to their Shore Peripatetic vocal teacher, Mr. Richardson, for preparing and

Gloria!
The 2015 ‘Gloria!’ Concert was held on the 5th August under the musical direction of Dr. Carolyn Watson.
Dr. Watson is an Australian conductor and the newly appointed Director of Orchestral Activities at Texas
State University. From 2011—2013, Carolyn was Orchestra Conductor at the world-renowned
Interlochen Arts Academy, the premier American pre-professional institution for music and the arts.
Carolyn has a connection to our community as she was once a Music teacher here at Shore, and we are
delighted to be working with her once again.
At the Gloria! Concert the program featured performances by Shore co-curricular groups, and Queenwood,
School for Girls as well as combined musical items. The evening began with the combined Shore Strings
Ensemble directed by Mrs Hellmers, who delighted the audience with an arrangement of the Duke
Ellington classic, “It Don’t Need A Thing, If It Ain’t Got That Swing”, before transforming the stage for the
young voices in the Treble/Alto choir who sang Edward Elgars’ celebrated “Ave Verum”. Next was a
performance of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical stage hit “Any Dream Will Do” under the guidance of
Mrs. Macaulay with accompaniment by Mr. Fox. Following this performance, the newly established
Shore/Queenwood vocal ensemble soared musically with stylistic elegant lightness in Laurisdens “O Nata
Lux”, directed by Mrs Macaulay who was assisted by Mrs Williams, the Choir Master at Queenwood
School.
The Tenor/ Bass Choir were directed by Mrs Waters and they performed the popular ‘mash-up’ of “Bright
Lights, Bigger City/ Magic” made famous in the movie “Pitch Perfect 2”. The next performance was by
the ForeShore vocal ensemble. The hugely popular song “Run to You” by Pentatonix, was conducted and
directed by Shore Music Captain, TZ Hicks (Year 12), before the group broke out into the African spiritual
“Shut de Do”, led by Mrs Macaulay.
Friday, 14th August 2015
Page 669
The audience was then delighted by a moving performance of “The Snow” by Elgar, which featured
Queenwood singers and violinists, directed by Mrs Williams and accompanied by Miss Jones. Following
this was the Shore String Quartet performing “Csardas” by Michael McLean which featured a
performance capturing the gypsy style.
Directed by Mrs Macaulay, the Chapel Choir closed this section with a performance of two works, “Sicut
Cervus” by Palestrina, written to celebrate Psalm 42, and the touching folk classic “Since You Went Away”
by Otto Mortensen, which was taught to the choir earlier in the term by the wonderful a-capella group, The
Idea of North at Choir Camp.
Following an interview with Dr. Watson and Mrs Macaulay about the upcoming excerpts from Gloria by
Vivaldi, 150 singers and musicians took to the stage to sing:
Gloria! In excelsis Deo
Et in terra pax hominibus
Gratias agimus tibi
Propter magnam gloriam
Glory be to God on high
And peace on earth to the men of good will
We give thanks to thee
Thy great glory
Under the inspired baton of Dr. Watson, the community of Shore singers and musicians lifted their voices
to produce a truly glorious and uplifting sound. The audience was thrilled by the energy and excitement
maintained by the students, staff and parents, who came together to produce such an inspiring rendition of
this masterwork.
I was truly delighted with the outcome – the programme was extremely diverse, showcasing the many
musical talents of the students, who have been inspired and ably led by our talented and accomplished
Music Captains, TZ Hicks and CL Fielke.
The students have been inspirational in their preparation – I congratulate every performer in the Gloria!
Concert for their hours, days, weeks and months of dedication to achieve musical excellence. My hope is
that the concert continues to demonstrate that the boys are examples of our music vision being fulfilled,
namely, for the boys to be inspired, accomplished and responsible musicians who are able to enjoy and
humbly serve all with their God-given musical skills and creative talents.
The Gloria! concert was a vibrant musical celebration of Music at Shore School. We look forward to
musical collaboration within the Shore community in 2016.

RACE REPORT:
Saturday, 8th August
The Shore Cross Country Team travelled to the Newington race at Sydney Park for the fifth
competition race of the season. The course featured three large hill climbs and a section on
pathways, and was quiet different to the previous races of the season.
The Shore Opens Team once again raced well on the 7.6km course with Ed Trippas placing 1st
ahead of Ed Goddard in 2nd. The team was strongly supported by Angus Pryde in 18 th and Ben
Muston in 21st, which allowed the team to finish second again to Scots. Other impressive runs were
recorded by Jack Whelan in 26th and Basil Jones in 27th.
In the 5.7km Intermediates, James MacGregor was the standout runner placing 36th, followed by
Antony Wu in 49th and Chris Savage in 70th. The Shore Intermediate Team finished in 8th Place.
In the 3.8km Juniors, The Shore Team managed to hold on to their 6th place due to an impressive
run from Hamish Longworth who finished in 7th place. He was well supported by Alex Sewell
with a 15 place improvement, finishing in 44th. Max Shabolt finished in 53rd and Oliver Kirk in
56th.

“Captain of Boats” gets his first taste of international rowing.
Thomas Barnes, 2015 Captain of Boats, has
just finished his first representative tour in
what I am sure will be the first of many.
Back in April, Thomas was selected in the
Australian Junior coxed four (seen above
with Tom sitting in the 2 seat) to compete
in the World Junior Rowing
Championships. This regatta also served as
a test event for the upcoming Olympic
games in Rio. The crew that was made up
from boys from St Josephs, Scots and Shore
had a good solid preparation, quite
regularly performing better than their team
mates were in coxless boats. The crew
trained all through some of Sydney’s
coldest weather which proved to be in stark
contrast with the warm “carnival” weather that they found when they arrived at the Olympic venue.
Throughout the regatta the boys performed well but came up against some very strong opposition in the
crews from Europe who I must say have a very different preparation than the southern hemisphere crews,
coming off hard racing only 1 month earlier as opposed to most of the Australian and New Zealand crews
going months without any real hard opposition.
The boys were one of four Australian crews to qualify for the A-Final. In the Final the boys found
themselves in 3rd place after the first 500m but then came under fire from the crews from the USA and
Italy. The crew finished in 5th place but the experience gained in the campaign was worth more than any
medal they could have received. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Thomas on his
outstanding season. He has as always represented the Shore school community and its boat club with
pride, a pride which was seen when he pulled on his green and gold rowing suit in what should be the first
of many campaigns.

SATURDAY 8TH AUGUST
On Saturday it was a home fixture for the majority of Shore teams at Northbridge hosting The King’s School. It was another great day of rugby with fine weather
throughout the day. As this was the beginning of the second rotation of fixtures
with GPS schools, teams looked to maintain their dominance or improve on their
previous game against Kings. Kings are renowned for their physicality at the
breakdown and attacking the blind side. It was again evident this was the strategy
of many of their teams. Shore was able to combat this in many of the games and
came away with 15 wins and a draw from our 28 fixtures on the day.
The 3rd XV had a bye in their competition while a few of their players were chosen
to reserve for the 2nd XV. Despite a number of injuries affecting the GPS squad,
the 3rd XV look forward to their upcoming game against High 1st XV this weekend.
In the 2nd XV game the team was victorious against a strong Kings line-up,
defending their try line in the dying stages of the game, where desperation
prevailed and they were able to secure their first win of the GPS Competition.
The 1st XV suffered a 0 – 32 defeat, where Shore failed to retain possession and
were passive in defence. For the majority of the game the 1st XV were defending
against a physical Kings outfit which were able to maintain possession for multiple
phases and capitalise on our mistakes. Despite this there were strong performances
from both Eddie Gregory and Max Sinclair.
The GPS teams would like to thank all our boys, Old Boyd and parents at
Northbridge for their support. Good luck to all our rugby teams this weekend for
their fixtures against Riverview.

SATURDAY 8TH AUGUST
St Ignatius College provided a competitive round of fixtures for the School. The
Under 15 age group proved to be most successful, winning the Cs 1 – 0 ( an
energetic goal to J Croker) and the As 2 - 1. This game was dominated by the
Shore team who controlled the centre of the pitch and were able to send accurate
passes into the forward line. The scorers were Lachie Dent and Sam Williams.
The 2nd XI was dealt a major blow prior to the match with several players being
taken up to the 1st XI due to illness and injury. That said, the team played with
passion and a determination to secure their first points in the competition. Harry
Whitman, Luke Mezrani and Ollie Kennedy were tireless in the centre of the
field, directing the attack to their imposing forwards Jack Gillespie and Rhys
Goldingay. Unfortunately the team was beaten 1 – 0 but will take solace from
their performance.
The 1st XI was confident before their clash with defending Premiers, St. Ignatius’
College. The match opened with a flurry of passing and within the first 5
minutes, Jack Meyers had slotted home a telling goal from close range. This
rocked St Ignatius’, who took some time to regain composure and were on the
receiving end of several yellow cards. A telling moment in the first half was the
red carding of one of the SIC defenders however the Shore team did not
capitalise on this opportunity. The team relaxed and with an air of complacency
they lost their control of the centre of the pitch. In doing so the team allowed SIC
to score an equaliser and then take the lead with 20 minutes to go in the match. At
this point the 1st XI revitalised their aggression and determination. The
communication lifted and the attack was directed to the wings where Oscar Smith
proved to be a handful. He was assisted by Charlie Wheatley who was pushing
forward in a bid to score the equaliser. The team had a number of scoring
opportunities: Jack Meyers hit the post with a header from point blank range and
a number of other shots were sprayed wide of the mark. In the final minute, Shore
received a free kick which Tom Ascroft coolly slotted to gain a hard earned draw.
