CHARTERED 1957
Letter from President
EWI OF HOUSTON --- OUTSTANDING!
Kemmons Wilson, founder of Holiday Inns, Incorporated
said, “There is nothing more exciting in the world than to
create something, to dig a foundation, to build a building
on it.” In the months, weeks, and days leading up to last
month’s Executives’ Night, I saw a group of people come
together for the purpose of recognizing the executives who
support us, and raising funds to benefit our scholarship,
literacy and professional development programs.
Plans were communicated, teams were aligned, execution was flawless, and the
debriefing revealed an immensely successful event. Many years ago EWI created
the EWI Scholarship Program (EWISP) award for high school juniors. The
Houston Chapter dug its foundation through fundraising partnerships, and today, continues to use this opportunity to advance the aspirations of our future
leaders.
On May 13, at the Hotel Derek we will have the pleasure of witnessing the excitement of three high school students whose hopes for college will be enhanced
by the awards they will receive during the EWISP presentation. These students
have worked hard to achieve the well-rounded preparation it takes to enter the
colleges of their choice. When you greet these students, their parents and
guests, please let them know how proud you are to support and encourage their
dreams.

Executives’ Night at The Corinthian
By Mesita Partridge, Houston City Club
The EWI Executives’ Night was held at The Corinthian,
a fabulous historical setting in the heart of downtown.
Guests were greeted with tantalizing cocktails and delectable hors d’oeuvres. The silent auction was a success
with wonderful items and bids that grew to be quite
high.
The dinner bell rang and guests were instructed to take
their seats. The ballroom décor was quite tasteful with
elegant centerpieces and table linens. A highlight of the
room was the beautiful ice sculpture that boasted the
EWI logo.
President Lisa Teubner, representing LyondellBasell
Industries, called the meeting to order with a thank you
and a warm welcome to all in attendance. The money
raised from the evening will benefit the Business/Career/Development Programs.
Lisa introduced an icon of entertainment, Mr. Jackson Hicks, executive and founder of Jackson and Company. Mr. Hicks gave us the history of the beautiful venue
and welcomed us as well.
Priscilla Massey, representing Baylor College of Medicine, and Dory Ward, representing PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, delivered a special tribute to the executives.
Lisa Teubner recognized all 55 executives in attendance.
The lovely invocation was given by Martha Turner with Martha Turner Properties.
The delicious dinner was served and I think it is safe to say that everyone was
pleased with the meal. The wait staff displayed impeccable service and the Executives’ Night dinner turned out to be such a treat.
Delynn Walker, representing Texas Southern University, started the live auction
and it was a great success! There were wonderful items up for bid, especially the
adorable puppy. The silent auction and the entire evening were a success. Oh what
a glamorous affair!

Firm Spotlight
Theatre Under The Stars
By Natalie Young, Theatre Under The Stars
Founded in 1968 by Frank M. Young, Theatre Under
The Stars (TUTS) is a Houston based non-profit theatrical institution. TUTS is dedicated to positively impacting lives through Broadway-quality productions at
the Hobby Center for Performing Arts and a vast network of educational programs in schools, community
centers and hospitals throughout Houston.
Each year, Theatre Under The Stars presents a season
of self-produced shows as well as national tours at the
Hobby Center For Performing Arts. Additionally, TUTS has presented a free show at Hermann Park every summer since
the Miller Outdoor Theatre opened in 1968. Named for those first performances under the stars, Theatre Under The
Stars is Houston’s oldest and largest non-profit musical theatre company.
During their 40 plus year history, TUTS has produced more than 300 musicals including many local, national and world
premieres such as Kopit and Yeston’s Phantom, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jekyll & Hyde, and Irving Berlin’s White
Christmas. TUTS has also produced international tours including Debbie Reynolds in The Unsinkable Molly Brown,
Juliet Prowse in Mame, Robert Goulet in Man of La Mancha, as well as critically acclaimed local re-inventions of classics
Cabaret and Les Miserables.
As a way to continue the tradition of musical theatre, TUTS’ Humphreys School of Musical Theatre (HSMT) provides
instruction and stage experience, allowing students of all ages and abilities to flourish in a year-round schedule of
classes. TUTS also annually presents the Tommy Tune Awards, honoring the best and brightest in Houston’s high school
musical theatre programs. This Tony-style awards ceremony offers students the chance to be recognized by their peers,
apply for scholarships and even go on to compete nationally for full college tuition.
Through TUTS’ recent merger with The River, a non-profit performing arts educational organization for children who
have special needs, TUTS Education now encompasses extensive on-site programs as well as off-site programming for
children of all abilities in schools, hospitals and other community based sites. As a non-profit organization, TUTS is only
able to offer these innovative and barrier-free educational programs thanks to the generosity and support of donor and
patrons.
Recently, President and CEO John C. Breckenridge announced TUTS’ 2010-2011 Sensational Season: It Shines! October
2010 through June 2011 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts including Hairspray, 9 To 5: The Musical, Dr.
Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, Billy Elliot The Musical, Curtains and Rock Of Ages. “This will be
our 43rd season here in Houston, and we’re proud to be bringing some fresh new shows directly from Broadway! All six
are TUTS debuts, five of which are Houston premieres,” says Breckenridge. The TUTS 2010-2011 season features two
shows which are still currently playing to Broadway crowds.
Thanks to the generosity of TUTS’ supporters, tens of thousands of people experience the excitement of free live musical
theatre each year, and countless students are exposed to the benefits of arts education. For more information visit
www.TUTS.com.

Special Recognition
Chuck Greco, LINBECK Group, LLC
by Carolyn Noack, LINBECK Group, LLC
Forum Chair Receives AGC Award
The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America National
Committee Chair of the Year Award is presented to a chairperson in
recognition of his/her outstanding achievements and accomplishments in the past year. This year Chuck Greco, President & CEO
of the Linbeck Group, LLC in Houston, Texas, was awarded this
honor on March 19, 2010, at AGC’s 91st Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida, for his leadership of the AGC Lean Construction Forum. Under Chuck’s guidance, the Lean Construction Advisory Committee launched the AGC Lean Construction Forum and its website.
The Forum also held more than seven hours of educational sessions
at the AGC Building Contractors Conference in January 2010 and
hosted a session at the AGC Annual Convention.
Chuck spearheaded the development of a lean construction curriculum, credential, and instructor program, and is now
leading the establishment of a business plan to implement these efforts. AGC President, Doug Pruitt, commented in
presenting the award that "Chuck’s enthusiasm, leadership and passion for lean construction and the AGC community
has led to numerous lean initiatives and a multitude of benefits for all AGC members."
Dallas Opera House Named Best Construction Project of 2009
Members of the Winspear Project Team were also present at the 2010
AGC convention to receive the 2010 Aon Build America Award for
Construction Management New on Friday, March 19th. They were
joined by Chuck Greco and Jeff Innmon, Owner's Representative for
the AT&T Performing Arts Center. The Winspear Opera House is
wrapped in a red glass enclosure and covered by a three-acre, aluminum-clad, steel solar canopy. As important, the finished structure,
which will seat 2,200 and accommodate opera, musical theatre, ballet
and dance programs, exceeded original acoustical performance goals.
At the conclusion of the awards banquet, the project was also awarded
the “Grand Award” and named “Best Construction Project of 2009.”
This is only the second year the AGC has bestowed the Grand Award.
LINBECK has previously been recognized with the Aon Build America Award for Space Center Houston; the Nancy Lee
and Perry Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas; the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston; the Modern
Art Museum in Fort Worth, and Texas Heart Institute's Denton A. Cooley Building in Houston.
The Build America Awards, often called the “Oscars” of the construction industry, have been presented for excellence
in commercial construction since 1972. Winning projects are selected by a panel of the contractor’s toughest critics:
other contractors!

Spring Conference
By Stacy Shields, Austin Industrial, Inc.
Memphis did it! I had the opportunity to attend Spring Conference and
what an experience. With 20 states and 25 chapters represented, the attendees from the Houston Chapter were shown “Suthun” hospitality and great
camaraderie. The diversity in speakers and the Academy of Leadership
module – The Power of Relationships – were so dynamic they were not to
be missed.
But business aside, time for fun was made by the Houston Chapter attendees too! A tour of Graceland, the “red carpet” ducks at The Peabody Hotel,
and a visit to the Hard Rock Café were all on the agenda. In addition, all
conference attendees were treated to a serenade from Elvis and a concert
by The Bouffants which had everyone kicking up their heels.
In closing, as a new member, I encourage everyone to attend the EWI’s conferences. I truly feel the foundation for lifelong
friendships was laid with representatives from chapters across the U.S., as well as within my own chapter. I can’t wait for
Leadership Conference & Annual Meeting (LCAM) to be held September 23-25 in Kansas City to reconnect with my new
friends and to establish additional friendships.
As Elvis would say, “Thank you, thank you very much.”
