Your beauty calendar for 2013 “ MODELS WALK THE RAMP AT THE STYLE STATEMENT 2013 JEWELLERY SHOW MOVIES THAT SET FASHION TRENDS A s the year kicks off and actors inspire new trends with their onscreen attire, here are five recent films that made style statements. Over the years, the silver screen has inspired a number of fashion trends. From Sadhna’s iconic haircut in the ’60s to Kareena Kapoor’s T-shirt over patialas in Jab We Met (2007). We get Priya Tanna, editor, Vogue India, to pick out the most striking ones in the past five years. BAND BAAJA BARAAT (2010) Anushka Sharma in snug short kurtis and generous patialas brought the flavour of Punjab to our wardrobes. Unapologetically bright, vibrant and vivacious, with a distinct Bunty Aur Babli (2005) hangover, the film raised a sartorial toast to the ubiquitous salwar kurti. AISHA (2010) For me and for every girl whose 20-something self was inspired by Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz in Clueless, this film is a throwback to those times. Preppy, pretty, lady-like fashion this is the film that made Sonam Kapoor Bollywood’s fiercest proponent and purveyor of style. STUDENT OF THE YEAR (2012) Gossip Girl met Pretty Little Liars with Alia Bhatt’s Shanaya, who made us wish we could go back to school. Her wardrobe comprised labels ranging from Alice + Olivia and Manish Malhotra to Hermès, her look was young, glamorous and cute to the core. ENGLISH VINGLISH (2012) Can you take a cotton sari, a humble bindi, and a trench coat and rock the look? English “O ddly, however, women who enjoy a good relationship with their in-laws have a 20 percent greater chance of separating. The researchers of the American study suggested that wives who like their in-laws may find it hard to set boundaries, and in the coming years may feel they are meddling but men do not seem to share such anxieties. Researchers at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research studied 373 same-race couples over 26 years and found that husbands who made the effort to get on with their mother-in-law were the ones most likely to stay married. JANUARY Warm showers in biting cold strip our skin of oils, so use almond oil, honey and fresh cream as a scrub on the face. For full body massages, instead of baby oil or paraffin, use a mix of oils — almond, olive, sesame, vitamin E and pure lavender. Consider detoxifying your body with a healthy diet and lots of water after the month-long partying. FEBRUARY Valentine’s Day calls for that extra glow on your skin, so go for skin exfoliation at least twice a week. Keep your makeup light with less foundation. Maximize your lashes and go for a smoky eye makeup with a hint of glitter to dazzle at the party. MARCH Prepare your skin for Holi, so you can play like a pro. Apply oil on your full body and hair in advance for a smooth, glowing skin, even after excessive use of colours and harsh chemicals. APRIL Apply a thin coat of sunscreen on your face and full body. Utilise Intense Pulsed Light technology for safe and permanent hair removal to wear shorts and sleeveless. MAY A short hair cut will help you to withstand the summers besides giving you a much-needed makeover. JUNE Opt for permanent makeup, which is applied in the form of lip colour, eyeliner, eyebrow or even a beauty spot. This technique saves both your time and the load of carrying vanity kits on holidays besides enhancing your appearance perfectly for holidays and parties. As Sridevi appeared shot after shot in a delicious palette of cotton saris, with her hair held back in an unassuming braid, accessorised by a bindi and those expressive eyes, it was easy to fall in love with her crisp, clean and demure housewife, Shashi, as she embarked upon an interesting personal journey in America. COCKTAIL (2012) The ultimate makeover film. Take a good girl like Deepika Padukone, and put her in leather skirts, men’s shirts and itsy bikinis. Give her bed head, and a bronze glow and you have a look most of us dream of, but very few dare. Be nice to mum-in-law to stay married MEN OUGHT TO REALLY TRY TO GET ALONG WITH THEIR MOTHER-IN-LAWS AS IT INCREASES THE CHANCE OF AVOIDING DIVORCE BY 20 PER CENT, PSYCHOLOGISTS SAY. HERE ARE 12 HEALTHY AND EASY BEAUTY TRICKS FOR EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR THAT COULD LEAD TO A MORE BEAUTIFUL YOU, THIS YEAR . All the couples were between the ages of 25 and 37 and in their first year of marriage when the study began in 1986. Lead researcher Dr Terri Orbuch, a psychologist and research professor, asked each of the couples to rank how close they felt to their in-laws out of four. She has followed them ever since. According to Orbuch, it's a good thing if men get along with their in-laws because 'these ties connect the husband to the wife'. For women, however, the situation is rather different. "Because relationships are so important to women, their identity as a wife and mother is central to their being," the Daily Mail quoted Orbuch as saying. "They interpret what their in-laws say and do as interference into their identity as a spouse and parent," she added. BIKER CHIC The hip biker look for women with jackets that accentuate the waist, while adding a swagger to the feminine form, is top of the charts again. Pretty or pedantic? This is the big question this season as looking brainy takes precedence over salonperfect prettiness on the fashion front. Therefore, if you've not yet bought a pair of thick rimmed eyeglasses or added some serious shirts in subdued plaid and structured trousers to your wardrobe, you might need a bit of sartorial help to stay on trend. From celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Kourtney Kardashian, Justin Timberlake to Bollywood actors like Sonam Kapoor and Soha Ali Khan — there are many beautiful people who are now opting to look brainy instead of working at looking gorgeous, as the geek chic look, as it is now called, is about looking sharp, studious and stern, instead of oozing sex appeal as was the case some seasons ago. The idea of "brainy being the new sexy" has come about because women are tired of looking pretty and perfect, says fashion expert Sheetal Sharma. "Even top designers are doing clothes that look good with eyewear and are using spectacles as a fashion accessory," she says, adding, "The geek look can be achieved by mixing casuals with formals, for example, a flouncy dress with grunge boots and a formal waistcoat. Or you can wear a crazy floral dress with a formal waistcoat." "As I see it, the beautiful look is completely out at the moment. Men want to look a second time at a woman who has an intellectual look and is quirky too. They feel she has something more to her than just beauty." As the first step in getting the geek look right, it is important to find an attractive pair of spectacles (even non prescription glasses if needed). But it is important that you look good in them because experts say that this is where people go wrong. A nerdy pair of glasses may have you looking frumpy, instead of stylish. According to luxury brand consultant, Varuni Mohan, the geek-chic look has been the season's inspiration for many couture designers. "It's a look which suggests that the wearer is smart and intellectual, and who wouldn't want to be perceived as smart? I think men have always admired women for their intellect, but today it's not an either/or situation. You can be both smart and stylish. It's the idea of a complete package that is appealing," she says. The best way to work at being geek chic, is to begin with a bulky sweatshirt or sweater, says Varuni. "It is a reliable staple to help you achieve this look — and should be paired with a plaid or houndstooth pencil skirt and finished with brogues with ankle socks," she explains, and adds that another option would be to go with skinny slacks and athleticinspired shoes. "For an easy one-piece way to try this trend, invest in a plaid jumper or highnecked sweaterdress to pair with items already in your closet, like a proper button-up blouse or waist-accenting belt. An angular, bold spectacle frame, ideally in black completes the look. This look is pretty versatile and can be worn by anyone. The trick is to accessorize it well," she says. The key therefore, is to mix classy and professional with casual, say fashionistas, but the secret is not to look too formal as you need to look carelessly bookish. Fashion expert Anita Dongre, however, has the last word when she says, "I still feel that fashion is more about feminine. A woman can be brainy but need not look like a nerd. But if the geek chic look works for you, that's great. I am all for individuality." Things to do with the great white shirt E very fashion guru worth his/her salt will emphasize the importance of a good white shirt as a wardrobe essential. After all, it's a seasonless staple, a garment that suits all body types. You can dress it up or dress it down, as the occasion demands. You can wear it to work or to a party, if you team it with the right accessories. Still, finding the right shirt for office is only work half done. You need to pair it up with stylish accessories if you want to get your corporate look right. From picking the right shirt to jazzing it up, here's the dope. Choosing the right shirt z A shirt with a classically-shaped collar that has a good neckline will frame your face well. z The fabric should be durable and of good quality. Shirts made of 100% cotton have a crisper, sharper look. z Other areas you need to pay attention to are the arm-holes and sleeve-head, which need to be well-cut, defined and comfortable. z Be careful of the colour of your shirt. White is never just 'white'. With ice-white, sharp and bright, to off-white, the colour varies. Avoid grayish shades; they can make your skin look dull and sallow. z A shirt will look great on you if it fits and flatters your shape. If it sits too tight, it won't look appropriate (over-emphasised love handles and boobies are a no-no at most office settings) and you might end up spending your energy on making sure it sits perfectly, instead of focusing on your work. hic. Trendy. Funky. Cute. Hairstyles can be described with an array of adjectives and when a celebrity gets a new hairstyle, it becomes the talk of the town. UK-based celebrity hairstylist Asgar says, "Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan is a clear winner as the celebrity who dresses best for the red carpet. Also, Hrithik Roshan is considered the ultimate style icon of India. Sonam Kapoor made headlines at the Cannes Film Festival. She's known all over the world for her B o l l y w o o d glamour." G l o b a l l y, L a d y Gaga has been known for her eccentric sense of style, while Katy Perry is known for colouring her hair in outrageous colours. But what about Rajinikanth? The Superstar has changed his hairstyles over the years in his movies and some of them have been quite funky, like in Sivaji and Endhiran. Ask Asgar what hairstyle he would give Rajini if a wax replica of the star were to be made at Madame Tussauds and he says, "After watching Rajinikanth in many movies, and knowing he doesn't have much hair, I would love to create a new look for his waxwork. Something very classy and also very natural, but not too long. A hairstyle that not only denotes a relaxed lifestyle, but is also sexy and dignified." But it's also important to maintain your hair, and with the wide range of products available in the market, one must learn to ascertain what product is most suitable for your hair. While selecting these and other hair products, you need to look into what they offer and what you need. Some are designed specifically for coloured hair, while some will add volume, and so on. And if you are not too sure what to get, ask your hairdresser if he/she can help you decide on the type of products that will suit you best. Hairstyles for an evening out Upside down French Braid The French braid continues to be popular and is completely on-trend. This hairstyle will really transform your look and will make a statement. Beehive updo A classic, glamorous updo beehive, like the one Eva Longoria had at the Cannes Film Festival, is a fantastic look. This hairstyle has a lot of volume at the crown and makes neat the dishevelled strands coming loose. Your beauty calendar for 2013 Beat the blues with jeans W hile studies reveal that women prefer jeans when depressed, a majority deny this theory, stating depression as just an excuse to reach out for their jeans. A pair of jeans is said to be a girl's best friend, which stands by her through thick and thin. It's often said that the way a woman dresses up reflects her mood. However, a recent study took this theory to the next level. It states — 51% of women will reach out for their jeans when they are feeling low, with almost six out of 10 teaming it with a baggy top. But only a mere 2% would wear it when feeling happy. However, experts state that this finding does not hold any relevance to Indian women for whom jeans i s a s a f e r a n d comfortable option to hit the road than in a short dress or skirt. Moreover, contrary to the study, most girls in the city even said that a pair of jeans is the easiest option to beat the blues! "Jeans is something that I feel comfortable wearing. Therefore, I tend to slip into my jeans when I'm feeling low than reach for a salwar or dress. We are a 'jean-gen' after all," quips Gayatri S, a media professional. "I opt for jeans when I'm in a hurry and not when I'm depressed," states Aditi Varma, a software professional in the city. Well, it could seem that your mind is playing games but actually, you are being attacked by the stress hormone cortisol, the body's defense mechanism. While some of us may be better at handling it than others, all of us would have experienced the emotion to different degrees at some point or the other. And the worst part is that it could strike at the most inopportune moment, in the middle of a meeting, while working on an important project, or while having a decisive argument with your spouse. All is not lost, however, there are ways with which you can destress and regain your composure in a matter of minutes. Check out how: Pause, find a window or any space away from where you are now, and take deep breaths. The idea is to stall the attack of the stress hormones. A series of deep breaths can calm you down instantly, but make sure that you don't think about the issue at hand while doing this. Plug on the music Keep a list of tracks ready which can instantly soothe you and distract you. A few minutes of listening to your favourite track and you will find yourself much better equipped to deal with any problem. Talk to someone There is nothing better than talking to the person sitting next to you at work or any trusted friend when you feel stress taking over. Even if you talk about inconsequential things, you will feel calmer. And if you find yourself all alone, nothing better than calling up your mother. There is a solution Get out of the pre-conceived notion that you are doomed. Realise that every problem has a solution, and finding it is what you should focus your energies on. Step out If it's possible, step outdoors for a few minutes. Any excuse is permissible here, to use the washroom or a smoke. Observe the people on the street for a few minutes, or look up at the sky. You will suddenly get a different perspective on things. If none of these work, consult a good physician who can prescribe medication and therapy, if you feel that stress is making your daily life exhausting. Whatever you do, realise that everyone is entitled to happiness and a sense of well being and you too deserve your share. Women are prone to heart disease T he 21st century proves fatal for women. Poor heart health is no longer the domain of men alone. Women are increasingly becoming more and more prone to cardiovascular diseases and ailments. We check out the statistics and their staggering results on women and heart disease. According to WHO in 2008, 17 million deaths were attributed to Cardiovascular Disease. In India, nearly two-thirds of the deaths from heart attacks in women occur among those who have no history of chest pain. Almost 71 percent of women in India sense early warnings of heart attacks with sudden weakness but misunderstand it as flu. Women with hypertension suffer 3.5 times more from coronary heart disease than women with normal blood pressure. By 2030, it is expected that 23 million people will die from CVDs annually, women being the maximum victims. According to the American Heart Association, one in three women are living with heart disease. 64% of women who die suddenly of heart disease have no previous symptoms. A premenopausal woman who has a heart attack has twice the death rate of a similarly aged man. Heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the No. 1 cause of death in American women, claiming almost 420,000 lives each year, or nearly one death each minute. Suryanamaskar is more than weight loss S uryanamaskar can do to your body what months of dieting cannot. And it can do to your mind what no spiritual discourse can. Not surprising, the world is going crackers over this ancient yogic tradition of worshipping the rising sun. What with the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Victoria Beckham and Kareena Kapoor endorsing it over gym workouts and bizarre diets. From improving your posture, strengthening muscles to whittling extra inches around the waist, the benefits of Suryanamaskar are many, provided you adapt it the right way. A set of 12 fixed, cyclic postures define Suryanamaskar which when performed repeatedly at an easy pace can bring a sense of well being, almost immediately. However, those with a heart condition, arthritis or slip-disk, need their doctor's consent before starting the routine. Suryanamaskar's surging popularity notwithstanding, jumpstarting a schedule is most definitely not the best thing to do for a fitness novice. If you have been gravely out of form in a way that you haven't stretched your muscles in ages, first give your body some time to open up, which you can do with some flexibility and stamina-building exercises before embarking on the more arduous 'Suryanamaskar'. And once your body has registered a certain fitness level, you can begin with a set of three Suryanamaskars in the first instance and increase it to five then ten and more depending on your stamina. Anymore than clocking up numbers, it is important to get each posture right, for the very essence of this yogic ritual lies in perfecting every move. To say the least, it can be an uphill task for beginners. But our expert-backed warm-up exercises are sure to make Suryanamaskar less strenuous and ever so graceful. 1. Neck: Breathe in while you turn your neck to the right and breathe out as you come back to the starting position. Again, breathe in while turning your neck to the left and breathe out in the centre. Repeat this movement thrice. Rotate your neck first clockwise and then anti-clockwise. 2. Arm and shoulder: Stretch your arms out in front of your chest and move your palms up and down, then sideways. Further on, rotate your fist clockwise and anti-clockwise. To relax your arms, place your palm on your shoulder and move your shoulders first clockwise then anti-clockwise. 3. Knee: Bend forwards with your palms resting on your knees, join your knees and move forwards and backwards. End the routine by rotating your knees clockwise and anti-clockwise. 4. Stomach and back: Interlock your fingers over your chest and slowly raise your hands upwards while you breathe in and stand on your toes. Return to Position 1 as you breathe out. Repeat this cycle three times. 5. Legs and waist: Stretch your legs wide in standing position, touch you left toe with the right hand, then the right toe with the left. Keep your knees straight while you do so. Repeat a few times. By now your body is suitably warmed up to begin the Suryanamaskar routine. Here is a step-bystep account of the 12 postures. Don't try this routine on a mat, you are better off on the bare floor or on the grass. Posture 1# Stand erect, ideally facing the morning sun. Fold your hands in prayer close to your chest and chant 'Om Suryadevaya Namah' thrice. Posture 2# With your hands together raise your arms up in the air while you breathe in. Bend over backwards forming an arch from the hands to your feet. The flexibility of the spine is ensured in this posture. Posture 3# Bring your hands down while you breathe out to touch the floor on either side of your feet. In this posture, it is imperative to keep your knees straight as you bend forward from the waist, and your head as close as possible to the knee. This posture helps melt the excess fat around the stomach by aiding digestion. Worryingly, Asda Finance research* shows that almost 5% of drivers never check their lights and almost 8% of motorists never check their windscreen for damage. Regardless of how much (or little!) care you take of your car, it may be beneficial for motorists to have breakdown cover. 30 MidWeek MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2013 MIDWEEK NEWS NEWS WEEKLY WEEKLY TUESDAY, JANUARY AUGUST 28, 8, 2012 2013 MidWeek 31 32 MidWeek auto MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2013
