Primary @ Reddam IN THIS ISSUE: High School Musical Rehearsals Athletics Carnival Public Speaking Competition Dear Parents and Caregivers, What a fantastic week we have had this week. With the Annual Athletics Carnival on Monday and our Public Speaking Finals on Tuesday and Thursday, this week has seen many students involved in the various events, showcasing their talent and their hard work. It is weeks like this that not only demonstrate the ability of the students but also the fantastic effort of the teachers who work hard to make the school experience for the students so superb. It also brings to attention the committed parent body which supports the school and the students so wonderfully. Monday saw the students don their red, yellow and blue house T-shirts and fill the stands at ES Marks Stadium on a glorious sunny day ready to battle it out on the track and field at the Annual Athletics Carnival. The students went all out to gain as many points for their house as possible by participating in numerous races and I commend them all for their participation. As always, some students of superior athletic ability stood out and I would like to congratulate the Age Champions. Runners-up and winners from the 8s through the 12s were, respectively: Annika Landa & Diana Van Geuns and Benjamin Rubinstein & Conner Kondilios; Isolde Rydge & Estelle Cantwell and Daniel Shields & Tommy Malki; Frederika Schneideman & Talia Shapiro and Yasha Ivanets & Julian Shalome; Isabella Devine and Zoe Costello (tied) & Jazmyn Bailey Grant Stein and Brooklyn Berry; and Holly Kent & Ruby Glazer and Isander Mesimeris and Jordan Sarkis. Thank you to all the teachers for their effort on the track to ensure the students’ were at their events and that their places were recorded accurately. Thank you in particular to Matthew Carter, Tom Cooper and the Sports Department for the planning and execution of a fantastic day. Our Public Speaking Finals took place this week in Adelaide Hall and the students performed with poise and confidence for their adjudicator and an audience of teachers, peers, parents and other family members. Amanda Crompton, who adjudicated the Year 4 – 6 event and Dean Hattingh who judged the K – 3 speakers both commented on the wonderful bravery of the students as they spoke for us as well as the high standard of speaking. While every single finalist should be proud of themselves for making it into the finals, of course, there is always a winner and I would like to congratulate the winners and runners up in each year. Well done to Mia MacCormick & Dena Rubinstein (Year 6); Sarah Burton and Mia Seisun(Year 5), Leora Shafransky and Coco Veksner-Shaw (Year 4), Daisy Singleton & Charlotte Benmayor (Year 3); Mia Jonson & Natasha Green (Year 2); Hayden Watts & Hugo Du Plessis (Year 1) and Arki Prasad & Caleb Chng in Kindergarten who placed as winner and runner up respectively. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 1 Thank you to Amanda Crompton and Dean Hattingh for their willingness to adjudicate the evenings and for their positive commentary. Thank you to the English teachers for their effort in preparing the students for the evening and especially to Ms Nicolette Gash who put the event together. We have seen our After School Care take on a new look this week with a terrific team of people on campus. It is pleasing to see that the students are engaged in fun and engaging activities in the afternoons with good supervision for homework and independent study. For bookings or enquiries, please contact Nikki on 0403 921 253. Next week, we will be hosting the Crazy Hair and Mufti Day on Monday in support of ‘The Ian Potter Children’s Wild Play Garden’ which Centennial Parklands will be constructing by summer 2016. As an outdoor space which Reddam House uses often for sports and training events, we are pleased to be able to support the cause. I am looking forward to seeing some outrageous hairstyles from the students on Monday and thank everyone in advance for their donation to this event. Next week we also have some excellent incursions planned for the students in literacy and languages. The students From K – 6 will take part in various workshops lead by leaders in the literacy field which link directly to their English Curriculum. The Year 5 and 6 students who take French will also take part in an incursion ‘L’appli Française Parfaite’ which uses song and drama to enrich the students experience of learning a foreign language. Best of luck to the sports teams competing this weekend and a reminder that there are rehearsals on Sunday for High School Musical, according to the schedule in this newsletter. It was wonderful to see the children all dressed up as their ocean characters, full of confidence and performing with expression. It gives the teachers such delight to see how far they have grown when it comes to performing in front of a large audience. What was once so daunting in the first term, is now fun and exciting. Here are some of the facts that KR have been learning and writing about in Science: Maritsa: Did you know that turtles, seahorses and starfish all live in the ocean? Karen: Hundreds of tiny creatures live in rock pools. Kayla: Animals need oxygen to survive. Nathan: Plants give oxygen and food to all the animals living underwater. Angus: Did you know that coral is a living animal? Caleb: Some starfish can have up to 40 arms, but usually only have 5 arms. Myla: Seahorses are a type of fish, but guess what, they are not good swimmers. Egor: Seahorses do not have any teeth or a stomach. Well done KR superstars, we are all very proud of you! The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 5 YEAR 1 Year 1 is loads of fun! WOW! We have had a lot of fun learning about different animals in our Living Things Science unit. We have made some creepy crawly spiders and camouflaged animals this past week. We enjoy watching informative clips and writing about new facts we have learned. We have also been busily completing our portfolio activities in preparation for our upcoming Portfolio Day. We hope to see you there so that we may proudly show to you all of our academic accomplishments. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 6 YEAR 2 This term, Year 2 have been reading 'Charlotte's Web' by E.B. White. So far, the children are thoroughly enchanted by the story and are on the edge of their seats waiting to find out what will happen next. During English lessons this week, the students have focussed on listening to the wonderful adjectives and descriptive phrases the author uses to create images of the barn environment, as well as individual characters. The book has certainly expanded their vocabularies. The students worked together as a class to write a description about one of their favourite minor characters, the goose. They then had a go at writing their own descriptions of one of the main characters. The Goose by Year 2 The plump, brilliant-white goose in 'Charlotte's Web' is a helpful, talkative and clever character. One of the times she was helpful is when Wilbur tried to escape. The goose helped Wilbur by shouting out directions for him to run. She was also helpful when she gave her unhatched egg to sneaky Templeton the rat. The soft, feathery goose is talkative because she talks a lot. She speaks very quickly and is repetitive. On a hot sunny day, the goose was clever because she covered up her precious eggs with some golden hay and then set off on a little adventure to stretch her skinny, orange legs. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 7 YEAR 3 On your mark, get set, GO! Wow, what a week for Year 3! The students have had a sensational week, beginning with the annual Reddam House Athletics Carnival. Thanks to Mr Carter and the Sports Department, Every Year 3 student had the opportunity to run, shot put and jump - either long, high or both! It was a fantastic day, blessed by school spirit and sunshine. The students did not miss a beat, some participating in every event available, and achieving some outstanding results. Well done Year 3! On a more musical note, the students from Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a visit from the Chamber Maids this week. This fantastic musical quintet helped expand their musical repertoire by playing various compositions and then testing the students listening skills. The woodwind and brass instruments sounded fantastic in the hall and it was obvious that the students enjoyed this incursion. Lastly, it would be remiss not to mention the Public Speaking Finals Evening and the success of the Year 3 students presentations. Every student delivered their best performance on the night and we are super proud of all of their efforts. Another fantastic week Year 3. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter 8 Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 8 YEAR 4 This week in Science, Year 4 students have been working on a web-quest to research weathering and erosion. Each part of the web-quest has required students to study a different website and to analyse and process information to answer questions. Students have especially enjoyed the coastal erosion, glacier and natural disaster topics. A design task challenged the children to design an erosion control that would prevent beach houses from washing away. Students have gained a greater understanding of the forces of nature and the impacts of erosion on our World. LIBRARY Author Visit - Cameron Stelzer On Tuesday 18 August, we have a special visit from author and illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Cameron is visiting Reddam House to run workshops with our students. Year 6 students will be taking a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book and applying their own creative components. Cameron will be engaging Year 5 students in a writing workshop, exploring skills to develop exciting and descriptive writing. Year 3-4 students will be exploring the writing and illustration components involved in creating a sensational story. K-2 students will enjoy an interactive Big Screen Book Reading and follow-along drawing activity with Cameron. In conjunction with the author visit, families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual items are $15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops. Forms and payment can be returned the following day, Wednesday 19 August, to the colourful box in the LIBRARY. Cameron will personally sign all books (including the child’s name and a message). Room to Read Book Swap Room to Read’s World Change Challenge is a fantastic fundraising campaign for students which was created by children’s / YA writer Tristan Bancks. Their 2015 World Change Challenge is to fund 40,000 picture books in local languages for children in Nepal who wouldn't otherwise have access to books. Just $1 raised will allow Room to Read to print a copy of a local language children's picture book. This year, Reddam House would like to participate in this fabulous World Challenge by holding a Book Swap during Book Week (week 7). The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 9 PUBLIC SPEAKING The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 10 PUBLIC SPEAKING On Tuesday the 11 August and Thursday 13 August, Reddam House hosted its annual primary Public Speaking Competition Finals Evening. These finals evenings are designed to showcase the amazing public speaking talents of our students from Kindergarten through to Year 6. It was evident that on both evenings, the skills of our students are being developed beautifully with some outstanding speeches delivered to both audiences. Students from Years 4 to 6 delivered their speeches to a packed audience in the Adelaide Hall on the Tuesday evening. In Year 4, these students consisted of Zoe Topper, Ben Herz, Coco Veksner-Shaw, Liam Docker, Leora Shafransky and Mia Walls - all of whom spoke about who they believed was the greatest Roald Dahl character of all time. The audience was definitely entertained with some very entertaining speeches that reminded us of the amazing characters created by Dahl; however, it was Leora who was named champion with her speech about James Henry Trotter while Coco was named runner-up with her very unique speech based on Caractacus Potts (I bet you didn't know that Roald Dahl was actually involved in the creation of the screenplay of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!) The Year 5 finalists spoke about their ultimate place of escape which coincided with their study of 'The Imaginative Worlds' as featured in their set novel study in the English classroom 'Bridge to Terabithia.' The finalists - Mia Seisun, Sarah Burton, Daniel Maynard, Alex Azzi, Frederika Scheideman and Frankie Nicklin delivered outstanding speeches. However, Sarah's very descriptive and beautifully delivered speech about her escape to the African bush resulted in her being named champion, while Mia was named runner-up with her explanation of why she'd just like to simply escape to her lounge. According to Mia, the possibilities of a lounge are endless and the humble chair is no match! In Year 6, the composition of the speeches delivered was very strong. Year 6 were posed with a question - 'If you could travel back to any period of time, where would you go and why?' The finalists - Reuben Glasser, Dena Rubinstein, Flynn Rowlands, Caleb Wheeler, Mia MacCormick and Miles Bornman - wowed with their incredible discussions about six very different periods of time. However, Mia's very unique delivery of why she'd like to go back to Ancient Greece won her the gold medal with Dena taking the silver for her speech based on why she'd like to go back and experience Japan during the Age of Gods. As you can see, the content of the speeches was simply outstanding as was the delivery of every speech on the evening. We thank Mrs Amanda Crompton, an English and Drama teacher from the middle school, for her time and contributions to the evening as adjudicator. We also congratulate all finalists on a fantastic evening and wish them all the best in their future public speaking pursuits here at Reddam House. We were also very impressed by the public speaking prowess of our students from Kindergarten to Year 3. The Thursday of this week saw our twenty finalists deliver their speeches to a jampacked audience. Like years gone, our Drama teacher Mr Hattingh adjudicated, and was incredibly impressed with the growth of public speaking in our younger years at Reddam House. Our six students from Kindergarten - Allegra Jonson, Caleb Chng, Jacana Symonds, Arki Prasad, Ava Kennard and Karen Kim - spoke about what they would see if they were deep sea divers. Every student spoke beautifully about the wonderful creatures that they would see. Arki Prasad was named the winner with Caleb Chgn runner-up. Every student spoke so clearly and confidently, and we can't wait for their speeches next year! The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 11 PUBLIC SPEAKING Our four Year 1 representatives spoke about superheroes and all four focused on very different superheroes. Lyra Mesimeris spoke about why she'd like to be Spiderwoman, Hugo Du Plessis would love to be Antman, Jasmine Wolfe-Coote believes she'd really like to be Wonderdog while Hayden Watts spoke about his love of Spiderman, especially his outfit. Hayden's very personal speech about Spiderman led him to being named the champion in this year group with Hugo named the runner-up. We also look forward to these speakers speaking again next year in Year 2. The Year 2 representatives this year - Savina Malesevic, Natasha Green, Mia Jonson and Hamish Walls - most definitely entertained our audience with their topic. They were posed with a very unique topic this year - What I don't want to be when I grow up. Not only were their speeches very well structured, the confidence and speaking manner from all Year 2 students was outstanding. In the end, Mia was named the winner with her speech about why she didn't want to be her mum while Natasha was named runner up. If anything was learned over the course of the evening, Natasha reminded us that she wouldn't like to be a Queen because as history has told us, a lot have had their heads chopped off! Lastly, our Year 3's drew on their studies in the English classroom to respond to the following topic - If you could be any fairy tale character, or character from a novel, who would you be and what would you do. Our finalists - Charlotte Benmayor, Rocco Buck, Daisy Singleton, Marlow Oakley, Sophie Marcolina and Max Cantwell - most definitely entertained us with a variety of fairy tale and famous characters from novels. However, Daisy was named the winner with her exceptional delivery of why she wanted to be The Grumpy Cat while Charlotte was named runner-up with her entertaining speech about why she wanted to be one of Cinderella's stepsisters. It is clearly obvious that a great deal of public speaking talent lies here in the primary school of Reddam House. 2015 has been another wonderful year of public speaking and we look forward to what 2016 brings. Congratulations to all our finalists and to all the efforts of our students. The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 23 Friday 14 August 2015 Page 12 COMPOSITION COMPETITION The experience of Monday evening's Composition Competition was one of great pleasure and creative energy. Music composition is perhaps the hardest aspect in the world of music making - a direct comparison to creative writing is the best comparison. Reddam House was lucky to welcome an adjudicator with a worldwide reputation - Paul Stanhope. Paul has had his commissioned works performed across Australia and in the UK, Europe, Japan and North America. He currently teaches composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has taught composition as artist in residence at MLC. This experience was invaluable to the students whose works he heard performed and he was able to provide excellent verbal and written feedback for our students. The evening is a particularly important one for our HSC Music 2 students who presented their submitted work for the final time before submission. In the Year 5 to 8 Section, Paul was unable to separated 2nd place and so awarded this position to Gerard Buttigieg (Year 6) and Saphira Moran (Year 7). Gerard performed with the band that he put together and for which he wrote the song 'Another Lie'. Saphira Moran composed a work for solo piano which she performed herself. In first place was Romy Glass (Year 7), performing her own composition as singer at the piano - 'The First Time'. In the Year 9 to Year 12 Section, there was a diverse range of compositions presented - from film score to string quartets. Paul awarded two Highly Commended certificates; Lara Smetannikov for her string quartet 'Triptych' and Seth Gabrielsson for his string quartet. Third place was awarded to Joseph Newton for his piano solo work; 2nd Place went to Natalie Binetter for her string quartet 'Tumbling'; and 1st Place was awarded to Xiao Zhang who composed a Piano Quartet in which he played. MUSIC The Chambermaids (Viva Musica) On Tuesday the 11th of August the Chambermaids performed at Reddam House for Year 3 and 4 students. The students demonstrated excellent audience etiquette and were engaged by the variety of music and the questions asked by The Chambermaids. Students practised their listening skills and identified the instruments in order of instrumentation, learnt about different instrument techniques (flutter tongue), danced to Klezmer music, learnt about programme music and even conduced The Chambermaids. Review: Ben Landa “The Chambermaids ensemble consists of five people (Quintet). The instruments are: Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon and French Horn. We sang along with them (Turn the World Around) and they taught us other music”. Alice Mitchell was the envy of all as she was asked to conduct the entire ensemble.
