2015 DULLY ARCHIES
The Visual Arts department celebrated creative achievement in
fine style on the last Wednesday evening of Term 3. A big
crowd attended on the evening to view the wonderful portrait
paintings of our year 7 students. The Seaview Gallery was
ablaze with colour with 130 faces ranging from highly realistic
representations to delightfully simple works.
Our special guest judge this year was Heather Whitely
Robertson who is Head of Activation and Learning at the Art
Gallery of NSW. Heather has a significant role to play in the
develop of the huge expansion of the gallery with the new
Sydney Moderns building branching out across the land bridge
near the Botanic Gardens and extending down the hillside to
Wooloomooloo.

Heather has been a critical friend of the school for many years
in her capacity of running Public programmes at the MCA. We
look forward to continuing our creative collaboration with her
and the AGNSW in the years ahead.
Our Dully Archies is our version of the Archibald Prize. All year
7 students attend the exhibition at the AGNSW and spend the
term learning about portrait painting, culminating in the Dully
Archies exhibition. We emulate the Archibald by incorporating
the same prize categories. A Judge’s Prize, a Packer’s Prize
and the People’s Choice prize.
Heather had a very difficult decision to make in selecting her
Judges Prize.
Her Highly Commended awards went to Oscar O’Donnell,
Hannah Hughes, Will Muggeridge, Thinlay Tenzin while her
Judges award was taken out by Pounima Teaupa.
The Packer’s Prize was awarded to Zara Jones-Gee and the
People’s Choice after some very close voting was bestowed
on Marium El-Hajj.

If you missed the exhibition, there is our “virtual exhibition” with
each student’s artwork projected onto the Seaview Gallery
White Wall each evening. Our thanks go to Mez
O’DonnellBecky Keong (Visual Arts Intern) and Briony
Magoffin for making this presentation possible.
The 2016 Dully Archies Exhibition is one of the better year 7
exhibitions we have had with a high quality of work produced
by the students. It will be exciting to see how they develop
creatively over the next five years of high school and beyond.
It is clear from purveying the exhibition, that the Visual Arts
teachers have invested a great deal of care, guided instruction
and creative inspiration to help deliver these wonderful results.
This year we had the added attraction with the Graf Café
setting up their barista operations within the Gallery space and
providing amazing coffee with the bonus of coffee aroma
filtering around the room. A big thank you to them for their
continued support of the school and in building links between
school and community.

Purple for a
Purpose at
DHSVAD
This year, Wear it Purple Day took place on August 28, and
saw students and teachers alike banded together with
members of the local community to celebrate diversity.
Colour was the theme of the day, and a donation of six
stunning bouquets of purple flowers from Newtown’s The
Flower Room helped us set the stage.
A vivid chalk mural expressing hope for marriage equality was
contributed by the HSIE department, and served as the
backdrop for the day’s festivities.
Dulwich’s school band provided the soundtrack for the
entrance of the official party, and later, the talented Shauna
Jensen regaled the hall with an upbeat performance that had
all the students waving their hands in the air.
The day was a great success, and as the students celebrated
through to the end of lunchtime, the overcast weather gave
way to a clear blue sky, providing a fitting end to the day’s
events.
The official program kicked off at recess, as six officers from
Marrickville Police Station wearing special lavender uniforms
provided a giant sausage sizzle for 650 students.
Celebrity DJ Victoria Anthony stationed herself in the school
quad, and had the students dancing up a storm through recess
and lunch.
The highlight of the day was the extended Diversity Assembly,
for which special guests Brooke Horne, Joanna Ferrari and
Newtown MP Jenny Leong were in attendance.

From the Principal
The End of Another Great Term
Congratulations to year 12 on the completion of
their formal education. The HSC exams will follow
and we await the results with much anticipation.
Year 12 conducted themselves in exemplary fashion
as their final days approached.
Carnivale was a great success. Students, staff and
parents had a great time exploring different aspects
of Diversity. Thank you to all involved, including the
P&C.
Dulwich Village Fair was inspiring. It appeared to
have more people and community involvement. Our
stage band, led by Mr O’Donnell, entertained the
masses of people with style and flair. Federal
Member Anthony Albanese, a great supporter of the
school, spoke highly about the community and the
school being at the centre, leading the way in
making Dulwich the art hub of the inner west. The
cake stall was well stocked and managed. Thank
you to Mrs Elias, the P&C, staff, students for the
day. Mrs Pickard cooked an amazingly delicious
lemon cake!!
RAISE graduation was held at school with a small
celebration seeing students and mentors share their
journey. Congratulations to those students and to
Mr Miles for organising the opportunity.
We wish to farewell Tara Mylan from our English
faculty, who will be taking up a position as
teacher/librarian at another school and Jess Daniel
from our PD/H/PE faculty, who is having a break
from teaching. We wish them all the best and thank
them for their years of service to the school.
Congratulations to all students for a successful
term. Have a rest, check the assessment schedule
to do a bit of mental preparation, use the time to get
organised for term 4 and above all, be safe.

From the Deputy
Congratulations to our year 12 students who
graduate this week after six years of hard work. We
wish them all the very best in their HSC exams and
for their future beyond school.
Our current year 11 students will be starting their
HSC course as from next term. Their assessment
schedule will be issued in the first couple of weeks of
term four.
The Dully Archies exhibition will be held during the
last week of school. This is a fun event where the
year 7 students create a portrait of someone
significant in their lives, which can also include a
self-portrait.
Carnivale was held during week 9 and it was great
success.
Ms Karamitsos was the person
responsible for this event, from its conception to
completion.
However, many other students,
teachers, staff and parents also assisted with the
process to help make it the success that it was. The
event also incorporated our ‘Diversity Day’, where
we acknowledged the unique and inclusive nature of
our school. I was fortunate enough to be one of the
judges of the talent quest and I was extremely
impressed with the range of abilities and depth of
talent. Our talented students sang, rapped, played
an instrument, performed in a band, or danced. Well
done! There was a range of food, festivities and fun
(as seen in the picture below). We look forward to
hosting the event again.
School starts in term 4 on Tuesday 6th October for
everyone. The first few weeks back will be busy with
the Design Market, year 7 immunisation, Dulwich
Primary Art show (in our school multi-purpose hall)
all in week 1. In week 2, the Higher School
Certificate exams starts (and is held in the Salvation
Army Hall) and the year 7 Aquatics program is
planned from Wednesday 14th-Friday 16th October.
In week 3, the year 9 leadership camp will be held at
Stanwell Tops from Monday 19th-Wednesday 21st
October and all of year 7 will attend Sculptures by
the Sea on Thursday 22nd October.
I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe
holiday and look forward to a very busy and
productive term four.

Design and Technology Report
Refurbishment of A008 and E107
During the last holidays and earlier Term 3 the
Kitchen (A008) and the Workshop (E107) were
refurbished. We now have a modern operational
kitchen with new stainless steel bench tops and
stoves as well as new cabinets.
The Workshop E107 was also refurbished into a
multi technologies Design and Technology room,
with a wet area, textiles, industrial technology and
computer areas. The workshop is now equipped
with a data projector and new storage units.

Design exhibition
The 2015 Design Exhibition took place on the 5th
August at the Seaview Gallery. It was a wonderful
night, where students of all TAS subjects
showcased their design projects.
Year 10 and 11 Textiles Technology held a
Fashion Parade, which was outstanding, as it was
the food catered by the Year 11 Hospitality. The
night demonstrated the high level of creativity
amongst our students and the commitment of
teachers.

Year 12 ITT and D&T
Year 12 Industrial Technology- Timber and Year
12 Design and Technology students were
extremely busy working on their Major Design
Projects during Term 3, with due dates in Week 4
and 6 respectively. They have produced a wide
array of excellent works. From furniture to
architectural structures, textile designs to video
clips; no matter what area of design students
chose to work with, everything looked of a high
quality. Now, it is time for all our Year 12 students
to buckle down and study for their final exams. We
wish them all the best for their future endeavours.
Through workshops during the last holidays,
incursions and after school support, teachers
ensured the students’ projects achieve their
highest potential.
School Building Fund
On 28th August the P&C launched the School
Building Fund. Under the theme “Building
Communities, Designing Futures” guests speakers
Scott MacArthur/ TKD architects, Marrickville
heritage society, John Baker/ BKA architects and
Anthony Nolan/ Kennedy Associates presented
their views on different topics related to
Architecture and Planning. Our Faculty was invited
to exhibit students works showcasing our units of
work on Architecture. It was another excellent
opportunity for our students to demonstrate their
high level of creativity and passion for Design.
Lend Lease Workshop
As part of our Design enrichment program, Years
9, 10 and 11 Design and Technology students
attended an in-school workshop offered by Lend
Lease, focusing on Designing Sydney’s Future.
The workshop provided students with knowledge
foundation and practice essential in Architecture
and Town Planning.

Public Speaking International Style
On Saturday 5th of September, Year 12 Japanese
Continuers students Rina Jessup and Sally Tan
participated in the annual NSW Japanese Speech
Contest, held at Macquarie University in Sydney’s
north.
The contest challenged students to write and deliver
a speech written in a subject of their choice –
completely in Japanese.
Students were also put on the spot with a impromptu
question-and-answer round based on their chosen
topics.

Sally and Rina did a fantastic job representing the
school amongst some very tough competition from
students all across NSW.
Also in attendance was former Dulwich High School
student Aiden Smith, who managed to qualify for the
national round of the Background Speakers Division.
The two girls came away with participation
certificates and complementary prizes from contest
sponsor Kinokuniya.

From the English Faculty

FROM THE ENGLISH FACULTY
Congratulations to Year 12 who have just
completed their course work for the HSC. It
has been a great pleasure to work closely
with them as they have dealt with the
challenges of dealing with the various
modules. They have been very diligent in
completing all assessment tasks on time
and this is an important stepping stone to
success. The faculty wishes them all the
best for the HSC and indeed the future.
It is not only Year 12 who are leaving the
building. After a wonderful six years of high
quality teaching, Ms Mylan is accepting the
teacher-librarian position at JJ Cahill High
School. Ms Mylan has made an enormous
contribution to both the faculty and the
school with her challenging and creative
lessons. Ms Mylan’s work with the senior
Advanced and Extension was particularly
impressive.
All classes continue to work at a pleasing
rate with a high rate of submission and
completion of quality assessment tasks.
The various years are working on the
following:
Year 7 have completed the design
of some very creative posters
designed in the visual literacy unit.
This was followed with a drama unit
entitled ‘The Play is the Thing’
where students had to present a
monologue based on one of the
central characters.
 Year 8- are completing an essay
based on an Area Study based on
the theme of ‘Change’.
 Year 9 has finished analysing
Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet
 Year 10 are currently studying
‘Macbeth’ and soon will be
presenting a speech explaining
their symbolic representation of the
key themes of Shakespeare’s
classic text.
 Year 11 have just finished the
preliminary course and are ready to
step up to year 12.

Sports Report
Tuesday sport
Well done to all the grade sport teams that
competed this winter. Winter sport this year
has been productive and enjoyed by all. A
reminder that all students go back to their
SUMMER SPORTS term 4, Tuesday 6th October
( First Tuesday back) .
Gala days
Both yr 7 and 8 attended the Bligh Zone gala
days which spread over many sports and
venues, Year 8 Wednesday 12th August and
year 7 Wednesday 2nd September. Both groups
represented the school in what was to be our
largest groups and numbers of teams to date.
Both days put on magnificent winter weather
which was fantastic as this has not been the
case in past years. Reports from all teachers
that attended have come back extremely
positive which is a credit to our schools
attitude and excellent behaviour. Although no
teams took out the first place ribbon all
students had a great time and tried their best.
This is the spirit of gala day and getting
involved and active is what it is all about. A
huge thank you must be given to all the
teachers and coaches that helped out by
supporting, encouraging and refereeing at all
the sports and venues. The day cannot happen
without you.

Senior Boys Basketball Report
The Senior Boys Basketball team competed in the Zone Tournament at Tempe a few weeks ago. It was the
youngest senior team in the competition and included Year 9 stars like Jordan La and Itu Mphaga. The
competition was fierce and whilst the team did not come away with a trophy that all played extremely well and
have some great memories of the event. Kurtis Sobb executed the most memorable 3-point shot and held a
100% shooting percentage for most of the tournament. The Most Valuable Player award went to Tony Li
(pictured below) who was dominant in both defence and offensive rebounds. No doubt, with some training this is
a team to watch in the near future!

Fitzy’s final sports report
As you may or may not be aware this is my last term
here at Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design.
My husband and I decided a while ago that Melbourne
is the place we want to start a family and grow old. I
am also stepping out of the teaching world for a while
and see where other paths may lead me.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to
all the staff (past and present), parents and students
here at Dulwich High. I have been a teacher for 13
years and 7 of those years I have spent here. It has
been an amazing experience and I have personally
learnt and grown so much. I have taught, lead and
supported wherever and whenever I could and have
enjoyed every moment. Whatever happens in my
future I will always hold DHSVAD close to my heart
and cherish the awesome moments that we shared.
Don’t ever forget to ‘Aim for the stars because if you
miss you’ll always land on the moon.’

Year 9 Report
Bring on the Leadership Camp!
Year 9 students have completed three terms of
rigorous, engaged learning. Early in Term 4, the
focus turns to the student’s emotional growth, as the
students become seniors of the school and are
offered leadership roles within it. As part of the
wellbeing program, students are being given the
opportunity to partake in the Year 9 Leadership
Camp to Stanwell Tops. The camp’s focus is to
develop and strengthen student’s leadership
influence and how to use these skills to positively
impact the community. Further, by realising their
potential as leaders, students will be able to
nominate themselves as mentors for the incoming
Year 7 students in 2016.
The camp will take place in Week 3, Monday 19th
October, to Wednesday 21st October, at The Tops
Conference Centre, Stanwell Tops. The three day
camp will incorporate a variety of activities; some
challenging individuals, others requiring teamwork
and collaboration. As part of the experience, we have
brought on board an independent, not-for-profit
organisation, YLead to run a tailor-made, experiential
leadership program called, Leadershift. As well as
this empowering program, The Tops Conference
Centre will also cater to our school with a variety of
outdoor activities, some challenging the individual,
others focusing on collaboration.
All meals and accommodation will be provided by
The Tops Conference Centre.
Initial permission forms are due to the front office by
17th September.
Final payments are due by 12th October.
Looking forward to a fun-filled and challenging Term

Science Coding
Last Friday on the 21st of August a group of Ex
Dulwich High School VAD Students who are
studying Computer Science at university, came to
our school to do a coding workshop. It was a really
interesting and fun experience. We learnt to make
simple programs that included colours, shapes and
movement. The instructions were very clear and
easy to follow, the whole class was coding in no
time! It was one of the most enjoyable science
lessons of the year, I hope we can do another
coding lesson again soon. The university students
were very experienced and they showed us some
of their projects. These were very advanced and
visually interesting. I am definitely looking forward
to doing more coding in the future.

Spaghetti Tower
Engineering
Competition
Congratulations to Angus Robertson, Gabriel Gouveia
and Dylan Perrott who won against strong competition in
the Inaugural Spaghetti Tower Engineering Competition.
Students were given 20 pieces of Spaghetti, 50cm of
Masking Tape and 20 minutes to create a structure that
would be able to withhold a marshmallow on top of the
tower for 10 seconds. On a side note, congratulations
must go to Mr O’Donnell whose tower of a whopping
5cm high held the marshmallow up for the longest
possible time.

Year 7 Go Wild
On the August 19 2015 Year 7 went to Taronga
Zoo for an excursion to observe the flora and
fauna to help complete the Geography/ Science
Cross-Curricular Task.
We encountered many animals on their journey
like the ectothermic reptiles and the brutal big
cats. All classes learnt a lot of knowledge from
the Zookeepers; they even got an amazing
opportunity with some special friends, like the
tree frog, the long necked turtle, and the gigantic
female stick insects. We got to pet a wallaby,
quokkas, echidnas and even see an emu and
kangaroo. The most spectacular was a 13-yearold tiny sugar glider “the oldest one in captivity
who was very shy and the whole of Year 7 got to
see which was a unique experience.
They saw baby hippos and got to go in
magnificent aviaries. The years 7 experienced
things that blew their minds and were blown
away by their experiences.

Evening
Building communities, designing futures event on 28
August was an occasion for making community
connections over yummy food, delicious punch and
interesting conversations. Architects Scott MacArthur,
John Baker and Anthony Nolan talked about
development, heritage and sustainability. A huge
donation of $1000 from Anthony Lofiits, Century21
Synergy Dulwich Hill, boosted the p&C Association
Building Fund, bringing it up to $3,500. Student
architecture projects were admired by our guests.
Jacky Chen School Captain did a fantastic job of
chairing. Thanks to all, especially Sharon Samuel for
catering, and all other helpers.
