BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- On the strength of their first-ever FBS conference championship and bowl victory in Miami, the WKU Hilltoppers (12-2) moved up one spot and finished 24th in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll, released by the organization following the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The No. 24 Hilltoppers appeared in the poll for the first time in the FBS era a day after defeating Southern Miss 4528 in the 2015 Conference USA Championship Game at No. 25 and rode the momentum to a decisive 45-35 victory over South Florida in the Miami Beach Bowl, a game ranked No. 4 of the bowl season by CBS Sports. The Hilltoppers picked up 58 points, going from 70 points to 128 points to stay ahead of SEC East Division Champion Florida, who rounded out the poll at No. 25. In 2015, the Hilltoppers won 12 games for the first time since the 2002 national championship Team, including 10 of 12 by double digits and seven of 12 by 21 points or more. The 12 wins are the fourth-most in college football this season behind only national championship game participants Clemson and Alabama, and Houston. They were also the first team in C-USA's 20-year history to go undefeated through league play and win the conference championship game. Head coach Jeff Brohm's team finished the year No. 9 The Ohio Valley Summer Collegiate Baseball League was born in October 2010. The initial four teams in the new Ohio Valley League were the Marion Bobcats, Owensboro Oilers, Fulton Railroaders and Tradewater Pirates, and began playing in the 2011. All four teams left the KIT League after the end of the 2010 season in order to form their own summer collegiate baseball league. The Ohio Valley League will play Official Baseball Rules and guidelines on the field. Wooden bats will still be used and the bulk of the season will be played in June and July. Brandon Doughty, the nation’s passing leader in 2015. in Total Offense and No. 4 in Passing Offense, led by the nation's passing leader in Brandon Doughty. Doughty, a 2016 East-West Shrine Game participant and two-time C-USA Most Valuable Player, led the FBS in passing yards (5,055), passing touchdowns (48) and completion percentage (71.9). He is just the third quarterback in the last 50 years to lead the nation in all three categories. WKU last finished the season ranked in the AP poll in 1975 when then-head coach Jimmy Feix's team went 11-2 and finished as the NCAA Division II national runner-up. Three of the four teams had played in the KIT League, a throwback to the original Kitty League, since their establishment—Fulton in 2004, Owensboro in 2006 and Marion in 2008. Tradewater began play in 1999 as an independent semipro team, but joined the KIT League in 2007. In 2012 the Ohio Valley League expanded to 5 teams, adding the Hoptown Hoppers from Hopkinsville, KY. The Hoppers are another of the old Kitty League teams. Also in 2012, the Tradewater Pirates moved to Madisonville, KY from Dawson Springs, KY. In 2013 the Dubois County Bombers of Huntingburg Indiana joined the OVL for a total of 6 teams. In 2014 the Madisonville changed their team name to the Miners (formally Pirates) to carry on their Kitty League roots. In 2015 five teams were active; Oilers, Bombers, Miners, Hoppers and Railroaders. For 2016 the league added two more teams; the Paducah Chiefs and the Muhlenburg County Stallions, both Kentucky teams. The 7 OVL teams will now play a 42 game schedule each. The League expects to add new teams in the future. Talks are ongoing with several other communities in Kentucky, Tennes- see and Missouri. Inquiries on Franchise Opportunities. Showdown by Coach Greg Vincent West Ky Sports Editor Region 1 versus Region 2. Paducah Tilghman versus Christian County. Arguably the 2 best teams in western Kentucky squared off in Hopkinsville last Friday night. The number 2 ranked Colonels came out on top 84-79 in a contest that was close the whole game. Had this game been played in Paducah the outcome may have been different, but it was not. This week’s rankings have the Tornado in the 22 spot. These teams are not that different in talent and style. Uptempo and defensively strong, both squads attack their opponents on both ends of the floor. Other than Hoopsfest and Mustang Madness, this game may have been the best that western Kentucky fans will see this season. There were a few future college players on the floor in this one. This game also had a tournament feel to it, as both teams knew that they represented the best in their region. Bragging rights were on the line. The 2015-16 season is about half over. District play is winding down but the play is heating up. Teams are still jockeying for that top seed in their district tourney. The top teams in region one right now are Paducah Tilghman, Murray, McCracken County, Graves County and Carlisle County. In region two you have Christian County, Hopkinsville, Webster County and Madisonville-North Hopkins. Roll Tide!!! by Coach Greg Vincent West Ky Sports Edtior Playing in the toughest conference in the country, the SEC. Playing the toughest schedule in the country. The Alabama Crimson Tide proved that it is the best after winning its 4th National Championship in seven years. Monday night’s championship game was one of the best college football game in years, and it was definitely played by the two best teams of the season. Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney, the best college coaches this year. Derrick Henry and Deshaun Watson, the best college players this year. Clemson was hoping to become the first team to go 15-0, but the Tide met every challenge that the Tigers could throw at them. And it still took a little trickery and a big night for the ‘Bama special teams to pull out the victory. Saban has now won four national championships in his nine seasons at Alabama. Clemson will surely be the preseason number one ranked team next season. This was an outstanding college football season. Some dramatic endings, fantastic plays, a few farewells, and the crowning of a very deserving champion. Other than Alabama and Clemson, most teams are already thinking about spring practice. The Tide and Tigers will join that thought process very soon, and before you know it a new season will be upon us. But for now, ROLL TIDE!!! Email Sports Information to [email protected] Sports Friday, January 15, 2016 S B3 Calipari-to-NBA buzz was more what-if than what-is ... for now If this week’s early buzz (Yahoo Sports speculation) had been true that John Calipari is shopping himself on the NBA market and any mogul interested in his services, bids begin at $120 million, then Kentucky had an earth-shaker story, right? Nah. For now. Kentucky’s ball coach arose Monday morning to find himself where he loves to be, near the center of attention. A headline or two down the front page from lottery numbers, bad boy Sean Penn shenanigans and whatever the loons in north Korea’s are doing. In age of Twitter, whatever rumors could be easily stamped out. Scenario: Bedazzled young Kentucky fan telephones Big Blue Line, in a mournful tone inquires, “Say it ain’t so, Cal. Say it ain’t so.” Then, along with Big Blue Nation and one-and-done prospects for next season, kid sits back and listens to a perfectly plausible denial. “I absolutely have the best coaching job in sports and I plan on being at Kentucky for a long time. I am not negotiating with ANYBODY. My total focus is on this team and winning the next game.” Poof ! Calipari tweeted late Monday morning stopped that one in its tracks. On behalf of the kid, it would’ve been good if he had added, “I already have all the money one human being could ever need ... Kentucky is my dream job ... I am devoted to Big Blue Nation.” Addendum. A Big Blue Nation devotee offered his context for Yahoo Sports’ mischievous whatif, “That tired, worn ‘raise the flag and see if anybody salutes it’ rumor comes up with regularity re Coach Cal. Doesn’t matter how often he denies it, or what words he chooses to express his denial. So, now it’s heard again for the umpteenth time.” S P E C U L AT I O N STILL FUN Speculation and suspense stoke the scuttlebutt fires in The Coach’s View tially, but hopefully you will learn and understand why at some point. If not, ask. Purpose—the reason for which something is done. Most coaches have their practices planned out early in the day. They know what they want to work on and accomplish. They also know the purpose, or reason, why they are doing the drills or plays that they are doing. There is a PURPOSE to every drill or exercise that he/she asks his players to run through. Players must also practice with a purpose. Are you shooting 100 free throws because the coach told you to, or are you shooting them to work on technique, concentration, etc. Are you taking batting practice because it is what you always do, or are you working on your stride, seeing the ball better, etc. The same thing can be said for a student in the classroom. Are you really trying to get all you can out of that history class, or just waiting for the bell to ring. You can apply the same principle to your job. Coaches and teachers must have a purpose for a certain drill or assignment. As a player or student, you may not know the reason ini- Having a purpose will help you be the best you can be. It may start with your attire, friendliness towards others, or your attitude in general. Your purpose may be to try and make those around you happier people, better teammates. Your smile and positive attitude may be contagious. Practicing with a purpose will make for a much better practice, for both you and the coach. And it will help you to reach your goals much faster. Ever heard your mom or dad say, “If you had done it right the first time?” Same thing with practice. Doing it right, or attempting to do it right, will make it easier the next time you try it. Kind of like learning to walk or ride a bike. You weren’t too good at it at first, but you got better the more you tried. Have a purpose before your next practice. Have a purpose for school and each class. Have a purpose for your job. Have a purpose for your LIFE! Take time to get a purpose for YOU. And if you are having trouble with that, there is a great book that can help you get on track, and it is a pretty good read. As a matter of fact, it is the best selling book of all time. You guessed it, the Bible. s t r o p S in by BoB Watkins KENTUCKY wintertime around rumor-loving BBN, don’t they? Part of the entertainment. Last Monday an internet headline blared: Calipari tells Nets he wants $120 million to return to NBA. In spite of Calipari denials, Yahoo columnist Adrian Wojnarowski’s piece was an intriguing chainof-events. Though it amounted to more Monday morning what-if than whatis. Had gaps to close too. For me, his piece violated spell-it-out obligation to readers – where, why and to whom Calipari communicated things he wanted and when? Wo j n a r o w s k i ’ s column was ignited by Brooklyn’s firing coach Lionel Hollins the day before, followed by what-if links drawn to Calipari flirtations with Cleveland in 2014 then New Orleans a year later. Add on a bidding war between two sputtering NBA franchises alleged to ready to throw lotto level money – Brooklyn and Sacramento added plausibility. Toss in a friendship link – Calipari’ and Nets CEO Brett Yormark, and hey. Next, reaching to last year, UK’s coach allegedly told Sacramento owners it would take $11 million-plus a year “to get his attention.” He had already said no to a 10-year, $80 million-plus offer from Cleveland, Wojnarowski wrote, adding, that offer had become Calipari’s baseline. He wants the 10 years and $12 million-ayear Phil Jackson makes to run the New York Knicks. Major selling point to Brooklyn involves Calipari delivering ex-Kentucky stars DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall to the Nets when they become free agents in 2018 and 2019 respectively. All of it intriguing, reasonable, believable and entertaining. By late Monday morning however, Calipari had tossed cold water on the embers. Leaves us with two items, a rule to remember and a delicious new bit of conjecture. Rule: Beware of splash stories on Mondays, especially opinion pieces. They are designed to grab attention on a slow day. New conjecture: Who will be on your list as next-coach-atKentucky? WORTH REPEATING DEPT. Fan reactions to Calipari-to-NBA rumors, a sampling ... • I can’t imagine Cal taking an NBA job at any price. He makes millions a year now. He is the star. • I don’t think he’s TOO serious at this time. I do believe he’s planning his ‘escape’ from Kentucky in a year or two, should recruited talent not pan out and he has couple of unproductive years. Instead of sticking around to show the world how he can still produce magic in the Bluegrass, he’ll duck and run to the money, using that as an excuse for failure.” And, from Kentucky Sports Radio ... • Cal does not need to teach NBA players. ... All he has to do is drive the bus to the arena. • Cal screams at his players. A lot. You can hear him on TV and I’ve been told it gets downright uncomfortable in the arena at times. And a favorite.. “Let Cal go. (We) true Kentucky fans would like Pinto back.” “You, Sir, are an idiot. That is all.” And so it goes. You can reach me at bob.Watkins24@ aol.com Wildcats Ranked No. 29 by Collegiate Baseball by Brent Ingram LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky has been ranked No. 29 in the preseason top-40 poll, announced on Monday by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The Wildcats return their entire weekend starting pitching rotation, including junior Friday starter Zack Brown, and senior righties Kyle Cody and Dustin Beggs. Beggs and Cody return for 2016 after electing to postpone their professional careers after being selection in the 2015 MLB Draft. Beggs led UK in wins (seven), innings (93.2) and strikeouts (75) as UK’s Saturday starter. Brown, a 6-foot-2 flamethrower, went 6-6 with a 3.48 ERA, leading the SEC in complete games (three) and complete-game shutouts (two). A 6-foot-7, 245-pounder, Cody made 12 weekend starts for UK in 2015, fanning 63 and walking just 17 in 66 innings, and is the second-highest draft pick in 2015 to return to college. UK also welcomes back All-Southeastern Conference standouts JaVon Shelby and Evan White. Shelby, who earned All-SEC honors at second base in 2015, will shift across the diamond to third base in 2016. The 6-foot-3 power-armed junior hit .312 with nine homers and 44 RBI as a sophomore, sporting a .442 onbase percentage. White, an elite defender at first base, hit .318 with 12 doubles and 28 RBI in his collegiate debut. The Wildcats also return catcher Zach Arnold, outfielders Dorian Hariston, Storm Wilson and Marcus Carson, and infielders Riley Mahan and Connor Heady. In relief, UK has a bevy of options, including seniors Bo Wilson, Dylan Dwyer and Zach Strecker, with Zach Pop, Brad Schaenzer and Logan Salow helping form a veteran bullpen. Sophomore Zach Logue also returns after a historic summer in the Perfect Game Collegiate League, where he was named the pitcher of the year. Junior, The Greatest ? by Coach Greg Vincent West Ky Sports Editor Last week, Ken Griffey Jr was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame. He was voted in with the highest percentage of votes ever. How 3 baseball writers did not vote for him is absolutely ridiculous, but that is what makes the world go round. The question - was he the best ever? Can you really say who is the best at any sport? The games change no matter what the sport. Times change, equipment changes, technology, new rules. Just how do you compare and judge? Junior may very well be the best ever. Without injury he may be the home run king. He would certainly hold more records than he does. But so would Mickey Mantle, who injured his knee in his rookie year in the World Series. Ted Williams would have more stats if he hadn’t served his country in the military. What if Willie Mays and Hank Aaron hit off of todays pitchers? You can go on and on like this forever. There is no need for this argument or any discussion about the greatest ever in any sport. You just cannot compare apples to oranges. One thing you can say about Junior is that he played the game the right way. He was so talented, serious but smiling, and one of the best role models for kids that the game of baseball has had. And he still is. His injuries in baseball were due to hustle. Junior will be remembered for that long, sweet swing, climbing the fence to make a catch, his hat on backwards during batting practice, and that big smile. He is one of the all time greats and one of the best ambassadors the game of baseball will ever have. Cong ratulations Junior! Thanks for the memories and for the way you did it. A year before, Drake was part of a Level III violation for a similar situation. After attending Big Blue Madness 2014 (where the airball took place), Drake posed for pictures with some UK players as well as then recruit Charles Matthews. That incident prompted the university's compliance office to send Drake a cease-anddesist letter in July 2015. by Angus Walker UK players won't be getting any more IG pics with champagnepapi. For reasons that aren't totally clear, Drake is a massive fan of Kentucky Wildcats' basketball. The team has welcomed his constant support, and in late 2014, coach Calipari even let him participate in the pre-game warm up, which, of course, only led to one of the most infamous airballs of all time. Though there are likely many benefits to having a superstar musician as a die-hard fan, the Wildcats might want to distance themselves from Drizzy's image, as it's been reported that he earned the team an NCAA violation. This is the second violation the team has suffered because of matters involving Drake. In October 2015, the university self-reported an incident involving Drake and point guard Tyler Ulis, reports Ken- tucky.com. The incident in question occurred earlier in the year, in May, when Ulis attended a Drake concert in Chicago, and during an after-party, Drake's management recognized the UK guard and invited him to meet with the Toronto rapper. The report claims Ulis' meeting with Drake only lasted about three or four minutes. During that time, Ulis was able to get a picture with the 6 God, which he posted to his Instagram LOUISVILLE, Ky. -University of Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino has spoken often about the character of his current team and they have proven successful on the court as well. Figures from the 2015 UofL fall semester also show that the 20th-ranked Cardinals have also achieved success academically. The Cardinals collectively produced a 3.36 grade points average for the 2015 fall semester, with 13 of 15 student-athletes earning a 3.0 or better GPA. Seven achieved a 3.4 or higher GPA. The men’s basketball team has been around a collective 3.0 GPA for 15 consec- utive semesters. The academic success continues a recent trend for the UofL men’s basketball team. For the 2014-15 school year, the team produced a collective 3.26 grade point average, just below its record 3.40 GPA from the previous season. Louisville placed a league-high seven individuals on the 21-member 2015 ACC All-Academic Team. Louisville has received NCAA Public Recognition Awards the last two years for ranking among the top 10 percent in men’s basketball in the Academic Progress Rate, which measures academic eligibility, retention and graduation for student-athletes. The Cardinals had a perfect 1000 APR in the most recent fouryear period, all while winning a combined 121 games — the second-most in the nation in that stretch — and the Cardinals won the 2013 NCAA Championship and reached the 2012 Final Four. Prior to entering the ACC, UofL’s men’s basketball team earned four straight league Team Academic Excellence Awards, recognizing the highest collective grade-point averages in each of the conference sports (2014 American Athletic Conf., 2011-13 Big East). Individually, Ivan Roe leads the Racers in all categories with a 585.9 average in smallbore, a 591.1 in air rifle for an 1177.0 overall average. Roe, who is currently in the mix for a spot on the Olympic rifle team, shot a 591 a season-high in smallbore at Jacksonville State, a score that ranks as second-best in the nation this season. via MSU Athletic Department After a historic fall portion of the 2015-16 season, the second ranked Murray State rifle team returns to action Saturday in Oxford, Mississippi to take on No. 8 Nebraska and hosts No. 16 Ole Miss in a tri-match. After shooting a respectable 4676 in each of their two matches, it was a home performance against Kentucky that began the hot start for the Racers. Despite the loss to the Wildcats, the Racers shot program records of 2341 in smallbore and 4693 in overall score, breaking the 4690 plateau for the first time in program history. However, just one week later, both records would fall again at home as Murray State notched a 2348 in smallbore and 4714 in overall score, marking the first time any Racer team had ever shot 4700 or better as a team. The score is also the highest shot by any team this season, with only West Virginia matching the mark. The following weekend, the Racers would travel to Columbus, Ohio where they shot a 4699 and a 4692, with each score including a school-record 2368 performance in air rifle. Over its final two matches of the fall, Murray State shot a 4699 against top-ranked West Virginia in Akron, before topping 4700 once against with a 4705 in Jacksonville, Alabama in its last match of 2015. After having never eclipsed the 4690 mark before this season, the Racers have now posted six Roe, along with freshmen MacKenzie Martin and Barbara Schläpfer, have all shot a team-high 595 in air rifle, just three shots off the nation’s best score this season. In overall score, both Roe and Schläpfer have turned in an 1185, the second-best overall individual score in the country. Next weekend, the Racers return home to host the 2016 Withrow Invitational, one of the largest and most prestigious collegiate and juniors tournament in the nation.
