This year promises to be one of hope and
change as we look forward to celebrating 45
years of Tammy Lynn Center. This is a particularly meaningful year and spring for Tammy
Lynn Center as we said good-bye to one of
Tammy Lynn’s founding mothers, Betty Moore.
Last year, with the help of supporters, board
members and staff, we updated our mission
statement. “Tammy Lynn Center empowers
families and enriches the lives of children
and adults through education, community
and support services. We provide hope and
opportunities for individuals to live, learn and
grow to their fullest potential.”
Our revised mission statement is reflective of Betty Moore’s original sentiment to offer parents help and a full life for their children.
Throughout the spring and summer months, we invite you to reflect on Betty’s
critical words and perhaps make a donation to The Durham and Betty Memorial
Wall, as we celebrate their life and legacy for families in Wake County.
Our 45th year honors those voices that stood up in 1969 for children and adults
that could not speak. And we honor you as we work together for families in
Wake County. Thank you for your time, effort and continued dedication to our
mission.
Warmest Regards,

Jersey Mike’s Hosts Fundraiser
for Tammy Lynn Center!
In the fall of 2013, Tammy Lynn Center celebrated ten
years of the Tammy Lynn Golf Classic, and as we head into
another 10 years, we couldn’t be more excited. Last year’s
tournament featured the most golfers in the event’s history
and raised more than $45,000 for the children, adults and
families served by the Center. Over the last 10 years, the
Tammy Lynn Golf Classic has raised nearly half a million
dollars.
Thank you to Event Co-Chairs Sam DiFranco and Ray Reyes
for once again stepping up to the plate to help plan this
year’s event. We hope you will join us this year for what is
sure to be a great 11th Annual Tammy Lynn Golf Classic!

Ever since he operated a single store in Point Pleasant Beach,
NJ, Jersey Mike’s founder, Peter Cancro has believed in giving
back to the community. His passion for helping others has
resonated throughout the Jersey Mike’s system, resulting
in an incredible outpouring of local giving and community
support from Jersey Mike’s stores across the country.
As part of this philanthropic spirit, twenty-seven Jersey
Mike’s Subs locations in the Triangle area will support
Tammy Lynn Center with a special fundraiser in June.
From June 11 to June 25, Jersey Mike’s will offer a free
regular sub (a $5.95 to $7.95 value) for a minimum $2.00
contribution to Tammy Lynn Center. Special coupons will be
circulated throughout the community to promote the event
and will be available online at tammylynncenter.org.
In the past 12 months, individual Jersey Mike’s locations
have supported us with donations of food for various events
but this is the first partnership between Tammy Lynn Center
and all Jersey Mike’s locations throughout the Triangle area.
Show your support for Tammy Lynn and Jersey Mike’s by
spreading the word and enjoying a great sub from Jersey
Mike’s!

Volunteer Spotlight
Tammy Lynn Center and NC State University have been neighbors for more than 30
years. The Center has been honored to welcome numerous NC State students, faculty
and campus groups over the years. Our newest partnership with the university is
with the Athletic Department which benefits our residents, students and families
throughout the year with Wolfpack apparel, game tickets and signed memorabilia
for the Center’s many fundraising events.
Tammy Lynn Center is excited to build upon our partnership with NC State and the
Athletic Department by welcoming student-athletes as volunteers in our school,
playgroups and residences. This spring, volunteers have included players from
the Wolfpack football team. They might have even been spotted playing in the
ball pit and with Mr. Potato Head in the Building Blocks Playgroup.
It was a real treat for the Center to have Wolfpack
student-athletes on campus. Thanks Pack!

The Betty & Durham Moore Memorial Wall
Durham Moore
1923 - 2010
Betty Moore
1923 - 2014
In August 2014, Tammy Lynn Center Co-Founder and mother Betty
Moore would have celebrated her 91st birthday. In the mid-1960s,
when Betty’s son Jimmy was young, individuals with disabilities were
often kept within the confines of drab institutional walls, destined for
a life without freedom and opportunity. Betty worked with her husband, Durham, and Co-Founders Ruth and Billy Pierce and Helen and
Irvin Tucker, to create a place where children and adults with developmental disabilities could live, learn and grow to their fullest potential.
Forty-five years later, Tammy Lynn Center serves nearly 400 families
each year through the following programs and services: Community
Residential, Respite Care, Early Childhood Intervention and non-Medicaid Day Services.
Though no longer physically present, Betty and Durham’s vision lives
on in Tammy Lynn Center each and every day. We invite you to become a permanent part of this legacy as we create The Betty and Durham Moore Memorial
Wall. This beautiful wall, created with decorative engraved tiles will adorn the
entrance to our playground, welcoming families and visitors to Tammy Lynn
Center for years to come. In August, as we celebrate the life and work of Betty
Moore, we will dedicate the Center’s playground as The Betty and Durham Moore
Memorial Playground. Tammy Lynn Center was born out of a mother’s love for
her child and the belief that every child has rights. That love is the foundation for
everything we do at the Center. As Betty stated, “These children have civil rights
too…they have a right to freedom; freedom to get out on sunny days, freedom
to move around, freedom to exercise…freedom to have a happy life.” What better place to honor and remember Durham and Betty Moore than the playground
where our children and residents laugh, play, and explore the world.
To Jimmy
We took you to the park today
And watched other children as they played.
We rolled your chair along curved walks
As children happily played and talked.
They smiled at us and walked on by
To buy their tickets, the next ride to try.
We’d like to have seen you play that way
From break of morn till close of day –
But you’re more to us than this, my son,
You were born with a loving heart –
And unique personality from the start.
Your limbs don’t move with normal motion,
Nor speech express your heart’s devotion.
We don’t always know what you are thinking,
But behind those big brown eyes a blinking
Is love that only those who know
And see you, loved you, and touched you, so
When I watch the children and parents playing
I know only my heart is saying
Bless them all, and bless us, too
They have theirs and we have you.
- Betty Moore, May 24, 1992
At its core, Tammy Lynn Center is
about family and we invite you to become a permanent part of our family
by purchasing a commemorative tile. The funds from this project will go
to The Betty and Durham Moore Memorial Fund, which provides educational resources for our staff and the families we serve.
Everyone is invited to purchase a tile. Whether for yourself or someone
else, these tiles are perfect for commemorating special occasions such as
graduations and birthdays, to honor or remember a loved one, or just to
say “thank you” to a friend. The Betty and Durham Moore Memorial Wall
will serve as a permanent reminder that we all deserve the opportunity to
live, learn and grow to our fullest potential.
Tiles can be purchased online at: www.tammylynncenter.org/bricks

talents with a worthwhile cause – helping fund Tammy
Lynn Memorial Foundation, which supports programs
and services of Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental
Disabilities.
Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities has
been fortunate to have the support of the community,
loyal supporters and dedicated volunteers for 45 years.
The success of the organization has been and will always be directly linked to all the people who come out
to support this great mission!
“For almost three decades
Triangle residents have been
coming together to support our
cause,” says President and CEO
Holly Richard. “It is this continued community support that has
made the event successful and
helped us expand our services.”
Once again, ABC-11-WTVD was

Board Corner
Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities is proud to
highlight some of the ways that TLC
Board Members are being advocates for children and adults with
developmental disabilities.
David White was recently appointed
by Governor Pat McCrory to serve
on the North Carolina Council on
Developmental Disabilities. The
mission of the Council is to ensure
that people with developmental
disabilities and their families participate in the design of and have
access to culturally competent services and supports, as well as other
assistance and opportunities, which
promote inclusive communities.
Tammy Lynn Center recently welcomed the following board members: Keith McDonald of Credit
Suisse, Richard Staub of Novella
Clinical and Gary Williams of PNC.
John Stewart was recognized with
the Arthur O. Prosser III Outstanding
Service Award from the Center. The
award honors the memory of Art
Prosser, a member of the Board of
Directors.
