Procurement programmes in Denmark
ISSUE 5 / 2015 Published by Procurement programmes in Denmark CONTENT The Danish Armed Forces have several procurement projects on schedule for the next years. The largest three programmes comprise a new fighter for the Danish Air Force, new armoured personnel carriers (APC) and the exchange of the aging truck fleet of the Army. Bidding is still proceeding on these three programmes. • Denmark New fighter jets • Defence • Technology • Industry MASTHEAD ESD Spotlight Email newsletter of the bimonthly magazine “European Security & Defence” (ESD) Editor-in-Chief: Dr. Peter Bossdorf Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Henning Bartels Managing Editors: Dorothee Frank (df) (newsletter) and Stephen Barnard (magazine) Editors: Wilhelm Bocklet (wb), Gerhard Heiming (gwh), Yury Laski (yl) Layout: davis creativ media GmbH, Bonn, Germany Photo front page: L. The remaining aircrafts are Eurofighter Typhoon, F-18 Super Hornet by Boeing and F35 Lightning II by Lockheed Martin which are to replace the 30 year old F16. By choosing the Eurofighter Denmark could profit from sharing training ot even maintenance with one of the other users Germany, Italy, Spain or UK. Maybe even a cheaper acquisition due to reduced quantities in the original sales of the consortium members could be possible. But Denmark is also a Tier-3 partner and has already spent €120 million for the participation in the JSF development and demonstration phase in 2002-2012. The F35 full production start is expected for 2018, while the Eurofighter has is already in use and combat proven. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is also a combat-proven strike fighter with built-in versatility. The Super Hornet‘s suite of integrated and networked systems provides enhanced interoperability, total force support for the combatant commander and for the troops on the ground. The maiden flight was in 1995, but full-rate production began after the merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing in 1997. It entered service with the United States Navy in 1999. The Super Hornet is in use with the United States Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. A decision on the new fighter jet is said to be made this summer. Armoured personnel carriers The volume of this programme is between €400 and 670 million. Denmark aims to replace the M113 and Piranhas, which have been with the Danish Army for over 40 years, by new armoured personnel carriers (APC). A total of 206 to 450 might be ordered. The bids of BAE System Hägglunds, Nexter, General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) and Flensburger Fahrzeugbau (FFG) have been shortlisted. Military trucks The volume of the project is about €270 million. These new all terrain trucks, including armour protection, and regular trucks shall become the backbone of logistics and support. The planned volumes are 400 - 500 all terrain and 300 - 400 regular trucks, with the all terrain version possibly having armour protection. Rheinmetall AG CEO Armin Papperger said: “Over the last few months we have been very successful on our markets. As a result, we have laid the foundation for growth in the next few years. We will grow on an organic basis and are focusing fully on improving our operating performance. At Automotive we are very close to achieving the objectives, but of course want to achieve further improvements. And for the Defence business, I am confident that after a year with unusually high non-recurring charges, we will again move well into the black in 2015.” www.rheinmetall.com was also the case in 2013 and 2012. As the company expected, sales dropped to a low of €2.4 billion in 2014, reflecting the budgetary cuts that MBDA’s domestic countries have been carrying out over several years. Moving on from 2015, this figure should see a significant rise as an effect of the exceptio- nal level of orders received over the last two years, MBDA is expecting. At €12.6 billion at year end 2014, the order book now represents more than four years of activity at current levels and will allow MBDA to return to a condition of growth in the mid-term. www.mbda-systems.com To subscribe/unsubscribe from this newsletter please write an email with “Subscribe“ or “Unsubscribe“ in the reference line to: [email protected]
