Parrott, August 18, at The Laurel
The Grapevine Chamber of
Commerce is proud to have Ryan
“Birdman” Parrott, Former Navy
Seal and Founder, President &
CEO of Sons of the Flag, speak at
the next Membership Luncheon,
August 18, at The Laurel in
Grapevine, sponsored by Wells
Fargo – Grapevine Main and
catered by Baker’s Ribs.
Ryan served eight years as
a U.S. Navy SEAL, attached to
Team SEVEN, completing three
combat tours to Iraq. In 2005,
Ryan was riding atop a Humvee
manning the turret gun in enemy
territory, when his vehicle was
hit by an improvised explosive
device (IED), causing a flash
fire and throwing him from the
vehicle. Ryan regained composure
with his face and arms on fire,
and witnessed his fellow team
members suffer devastating burn
and blast injuries.
After completing his service,
Ryan moved to Dallas. Meeting
other Veterans in the area,
some of whom suffered serious
burn injuries, Ryan became
discouraged that Veteran Burn
Survivors were not benefitting
from advancements in the area
of burns in the same way that
amputees benefit from incredible
advancements in prosthetics.
Searching for better answers,
Ryan realized that traumatic
burns significantly impact not
only the military community,
but firefighters, first responders
and civilians as well. Feeling
called to help, Ryan established
Sons of the Flag.
Sons of the Flag, a nonprofit
organization, founded in 2012, is
vigilantly committed to supporting
military, first responders, and
civilian burn survivors by
providing funding for innovative
research, fellowships for doctors
to further their training in treating
burn survivors, educational
opportunities, and support for
those impacted by a traumatic
burn. To that end, Sons of the

The Grapevine Chamber’s Business Insight
Series continues Friday, August 26, at The
Courtyard/TownePlace Suites by Marriot
in Grapevine, with Carlos Merla, Master
Certified Executive Coach / Trainer, speaking
on the topic, Building Cultural Awareness
and Competency.
In this very interactive session, you will learn the

fully aware of the diversity of cultures around us. We all live
and work in a culturally diverse world, and many times we
neglect the opportunities and possibilities this world offers
us. You will learn how cultural awareness, knowledge and
skill creates your cultural competency and how to use this
skill to your advantage.
During this session you will learn:
• The Impact from “Cultural Profiling” - How perceptions are
made based on how people look and how people look at you
• Foundations of Culture Identity – Defining traditional
cultures, subcultures, and universal Cultures
• Critical Aspects of Cultural Competency – Building your
knowledge of cultural awareness, knowledge and skill
• Creating a Working Culture – The responsibility to create
the culture in your working environment to influence the
changing demographics
• “Core Events of Cultural Awareness” – Tales of awareness
and cultural competency, along with how to appropriately
understand and respond to cultural uniqueness

Go Back to Our Community!
Women’s Division members are very busy working on our new
fundraiser Uncorked! Music in the Vine, August 19, 7-11 p.m., at
the Laurel, located at 2040 Enchanted Way in Grapevine. We are
excited that Jasmine Sadry, co-host of radio station New Country
96.3 KSCS’s Hawkeye in the Morning will be the emcee for the
evening. The concert will feature four talented bands:
Big Town Rodeo (Modern Country)
Justin Mason (Classic Country)
Zack King Band (Texas Rock)
The Walton Stout Band (Party Dance Band)
15 local restaurants are providing bite size portions of different
food items such as sliders, quesadillas, wings, meatballs, ribs,
and kabobs just to name a few. Tickets are limited! Visit www.
UncorkedGrapevine.com for General Admission ($50) or
Reserved Seating ($100). Proceeds from the concert benefit local
children, through school supplies, and senior adults, by fulfilling
Christmas wishes during the holiday season.
Our local volunteer effort is Saturday, August 6. We will be
partnering with GCISD’s Back to School Fair. Due to the hard
work of our members and community attending our fundraising
efforts, including the Great Taste of Grapevine and the Holiday
Hoedown, we were able to purchase $30,000 in school supplies
for 1,200 deserving GCISD students.
At the Back to School Fair, our volunteers will be distributing
school supplies and walking with families through the event.
Thank you to Lauren Clark with EPI (Educational Products Inc.)
for their donation of Women’s Division T-Shirts again this year
for this service event.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our next luncheon
Tuesday, August 16, at 11:45 a.m. at Messina Hof Winery, located
at 201 S. Main St. in Grapevine. Our program will feature Dr.
David Smith speaking on Women’s Equality Day & Voting. Our
luncheon sponsor will be Merry Lyn Bagwell. Thanks to Drybar
in Grapevine for providing a great program in July!
If you have questions about the Women’s Division of the
