Grapevine Chamber of Commerce Newsletter January, 2010 Business Matters * 02-03 04-05 06-07 08-09 Chamber Committees Community Awards Sponsorship Opportunities New Members Renewing Members Booking Towards Success 10-11 The President’s Article Ribbon Cuttings January Luncheon with Susan Combs Thursday, January 14th will be the first luncheon for the 2010 year of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce. To begin the year in a phenominal fashion, the Chamber is proud to host Texas State Comptroller Susan Combs as our special guest speaker. The luncheon will be held at the Grapevine Convention Center, beginning at 11:30a.m. and will conclude by 1:00p.m. The luncheon cost is $20 with advanced registration or $25 at the door or invoiced. Susan Combs was elected Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in November 2006 and immediately set an innovative course of action to transform state government and prepare Texas for the future beginning her first day in office on Jan. 1, 2007. As Comptroller, Combs is the state’s chief financial officer. She manages the state’s treasury operations, monitors Texas’ fiscal health, guides legislative decision makers by estimating state revenues and ensures state taxes are collected fairly and efficiently to fund vital programs and services for the people of Texas. But her focus does not end there. With a belief that government must be fully accountable to the people it serves, Combs has spearheaded unprecedented efforts to give taxpayers a transparent look at how their dollars are spent. She posted the expenses of the Comptroller’s office online her third day on the job and took transparency in government spending to new heights by launching the Where the Money Goes Web site. Considered a model by many other states and open government advocates, the site features a virtual check register that gives the public online access to detailed and upto-date expenditure information for all state entities. In addition to shining a light on expenditures, Combs introduced Open Book Texas, a set of initiatives aimed at improving government accounting accuracy, spending and transparency. These initiatives will introduce more uniformity in Texas government accounting to spotlight possible spending inefficiencies, make Texas government a better shopper and encourage accountability and transparency. By leading the charge with transparency, she’s now helping local governments open their books and identify ways to spend smarter. Combs is committed to efficient government. Under her leadership, the Comptroller’s office implemented a sweeping range of business process improvements projected to save nearly $8 million by the end of 2009 to reinvest in meeting increased demand for services. Combs also directs a comprehensive study of ways to make Texas government data more cohesive, standardized and efficient. Furthermore, by purchasing goods and services through state-negotiated contracts, the Comptroller has realized savings and cost avoidances totaling at least $28 million and representing more than 8 percent of state spending for certain goods and services. Under Combs’ direction, the Comptroller’s office has set a standard of excellence and efficiency in customer service. Direct customer feedback guides improvements at every level, from an ongoing effort to simplify forms and publications to the award-winning redesign of the agency’s Web site to ensure Continued on page 7 Your 2010 Chairman of the Board Louie Sullins is a Wealth Management Advisor and has been with Merrill Lynch 5 years. The Women’s Division had a very busy December as we celebrated the “Spirit of Christmas” with more than 100 area seniors. Thanks to all of you who contributed to the success of the project by selecting a snow flake from the giving trees we provided and for the gracious gifts you purchased to provide Christmas for the seniors. The smiles and hugs are precious and lasting memories for everyone. We celebrated the success of 2009 at the annual Holiday Charity Ball held the first week of December. Special thanks to Box Insurance Agency and their entire team who served as the “Presenting” sponsors for this year’s Ball. Congratulations to Jane Chevier, named Woman of the Year for her outstanding leadership and volunteerism throughout the community. Additionally, save the date, the 2010 Holiday Charity Ball will be Saturday, December 4, 2010! I am very excited about the opportunities ahead for the Chamber and the Women’s Division in 2010. Again, those in attendance at the November luncheon want to thank Judy Gill from Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center, for NOT attending, because her name was drawn for the “Must Be Present to Win” drawing. Since she was not there, the $550 was placed back into the bowl, and the January 2010 luncheon drawing will be for $600! This amount will continue to grow monthly until someone’s name is drawn who is in attendance. All Chamber member names are in the drawing which is sponsored by the Grand Prairie Air Hogs Baseball Team, and they hope you are able to “catch” the drawing each month! www.grapevinechamber.org JANUARY 2 0 1 0 l 3 2010 Sponsorship Opportunities The first January of a new decade is a great time to review your companies marketing plan for 2010 and consider ways to market your business through some of the sponsorship opportunties in the Grapevine Chamber. Combs also expanded the duties of the Comptroller’s Local Government Assistance Division to include economic development and launched the Texas Ahead Web site in May 2008 as a onestop portal to give businesses, global partners and local governments a wealth of economic development tools and resources. Key among these is the Texas EDGE Data Center that puts key economic development information at users’ fingertips. Government Technology magazine named Combs as one of only three women to 2009 list of the Top 25 “Doers, Dreamers and Drivers,” recognizing leaders who use technology to solve problems, meet evolving expectations and operate government more efficiently. In recognizing the demand for improved services, Combs’ efforts to reengineer the Comptroller’s office propelled the state to analyze expenses and use electronic tools to offer a transparent look at government spending. Texans elected Combs in backto-back elections in 1998 and 2002 to serve as the state’s first woman Agriculture Commissioner. She re-engineered the Texas Department of Agriculture for greater efficiency and took on more responsibility to boost economic development, ignite revitalization, promote Texas products through the GO TEXAN marketing campaign and helped Texas schoolchildren eat healthier by launching one of the nation’s strongest school nutrition policies. Combs also served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives, where she sponsored and passed the state’s landmark private property rights legislation and authored legislation on tort reform vital to the business community. After graduating from Vassar College, Combs worked in international advertising in New York, in the financial markets on Wall Street and for the federal government before returning to Texas to obtain her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law. Combs served as an assistant district attorney in Dallas, where her performance as a tough prosecutor of child abuse cases earned her widespread respect. Combs was born in San Antonio and has a ranching operation in Brewster County on the same ranch owned by her greatgrandfather more than a century ago. She lives in Austin with her husband, Joe, and is the proud mother of three sons. Now is the time to make your reservations for the January Luncheon. You are encouraged to consider our new opportunity, the VIP Luncheon Club. It is for Chamber member businesses to save some money, some time, and have a magnetic badge for the luncheon instead of a paper stick on one! A book synopsis is provided by Randy Mayeux, which enables those attending to discuss the ideas and transferable concepts of a book in an intelligent and usable way. For each synopsis, Randy provides a selection of significant quotes taken directly from the book, and an outline of useful ideas from the book. Listening to Randy present a book synopsis is not quite as good as reading the book for yourself, but it’s close. Randy has provided such presentations monthly for the last eleven years, to both business and non-profit audiences. The synopsis presentation is followed by a facilitated discussion of the implications and transferable principles for your own unique setting. This discussion is led by Ron Holifield of Strategic Government Resouces. For 2010, the following dates have been scheduled for this opportunity for book readers who don’t have time to read, or those who don’t like to read to review current popular and not-so-popular books and ideas. At each synopsis, a continental breakfast is provided and the group meets from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the Bessie Mitchell House, 411 Ball Street. The cost is $20 per session, and must be paid in advance. If you would like to get on the list of attendees, contact the Chamber at 817-481-1522. While there were many challenges in 2009, by working with the Board, as well as active chamber members our committee’s activies has been rewarding. In 2010 there will not be as many changes to our overall program, but instead the efforts will be on continuing to improve the benefits of our committees, events and networking opportunities for the many businesses who invest in their chamber. One of the few changes will be to the Economic Development Partnership meeting, which besides a name change, will now be meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. ALL CHAMBER MEMBERS are not only invited to attend this informational opportunity, but are encouraged to attend. There are very few other cities who are as open with providing information to Chamber businesses on not only the businesses coming into the community, but the road work, planning & zoning issues as well as details on city wide activities and events. The meeting is one hour, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and held in the briefing room on the second floor of city hall. There will still be a guest invited to provide specifics on various development projects, roadways and other topics of interest to the businesses in Grapevine. Another change for 2010 will be the Thursday Networking group will now be meeting at 11:30 a.m. at Chill. This restaurant is located at the intersection of Main Street and Dallas road. Both Networking groups are open to any chamber members who wish to extend their member benefits by developing a foundation of contacts within the community. As we continue to review our past activities, we look forward to bringing in some new ideas. Be looking for our new Chamber Directory and Referral Guide which should be in the mail by late January. We are very excited about the changes and information provided. We will also be continuing the monthly newsletter, with ad sales being done by the Chamber staff. As we tell new members, your membership investment (dues) is one of the most inexpensive ways to advertise your business 24/7 through the directory and website as well as supporting your business community. All events, committees and activities designed and coordinated through the efforts of your fellow members are ways for you to expand your benefits. This is YOUR chamber of commerce and if you have any ideas, suggestions or comments about ways to improve your investment opportunities – contact any Board member or staff to discuss. I wish you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!
