EXTREME HIGH FLUTES
W
by Coyote Oldman—Michael Graham Allen
e have been listening to and admiring the innovative music of Coyote Oldman for several years. Now, we are very proud
to offer you one of his latest flutes. After meeting Michael at the inaugural INAFA meeting in Ohio it became very
obvious that Michael is truly an innovator and craftsman ahead of his time. His warm and sincere personality shines in
every flute he makes. We are proud to call him our friend and to offer you his latest flute. Enjoy!
This perfectly tuned little whistle flute is fun. Michael’s extreme
high flute possesses a strong sweet voice that will sail above the
drums, guitars, and even the birds. Great for “jamming” with
other instruments because its high, clear voice doesn’t get lost among the music. Also a lovely solo
instrument for both outdoor and indoor playing. Measuring only 14” in length it’s the perfect flute for
children, small-handed players or any flute player that wants to play to the stars. Crafted of Eastern Red Cedar and
available in both high Gm and Fm (above middle C). This flute is way too much fun! High Gm, Fm $60

When Douglas Spotted Eagle commissioned
us to create his limited edition signature flute,
only one flute making company came to
mind, to help us engineer and refine the solid body
spruce construction—Chris Ti Coom Flutes. Richard and Larry of
Chris Ti Coom Flutes, have been creating high quality solid bore flutes for
years. Douglas believes that the solid bore process creates a more resonant flute by eliminating the
glued joints. These flutes are made using a solid body construction. Their barrel chambers are bored
(drilled) from one solid piece of premium wood. The end result of this precise boring process is a
beautifully crafted and solid sounding flute created with exact wall thickness that is crucial in tuning
accuracy and sound resonance. Many recording artists choose to play and own Chris Ti Coom Flutes,
including, R. Carlos Nakai, Ron Roybal, Mark Holland, Robert Mirabal, and more. These flutes come
with the traditional bird block totem. If you would like to special order a custom totem, we can have it for
you in two weeks for an additional $20. We offer for immediate shipment six hole flutes in cherry, maple,
or walnut in the following keys:
High Am: $195; Medium Gm: $220; Low Em: $250
Five hole flutes, Other keys and softwood flutes are available by special request ranging from high Cm to Low Dm.

FLUTES OF THE EARTH
by Guillermo Martinez
uillermo’s flute making journey began over 20 years ago as he re-connected with his native Tarnscan heritage and began
making flutes of wood and clay. Guillermo was fortunate to apprentice under master flute maker and player, Xavier
Quijas Yxayotl, who unlocked the secrets to these pre-Colombian (pre-Columbus) instruments for him. Guillermo has
appeared in two PBS documentaries including his latest effort “Cross Roads”, with Robert Tree Cody. He has also played
his instruments on 2 NAMMY nominated CD’s and his flutes have been heard on 15 other artist’s releases.
We are both thrilled and honored to share Guillermo’s flute creations with you.
Cedar Drone Flutes with Inlayed
Maple Mouthpiece—“The Maya”
We have commissioned Guillermo to create a special cedar drone flute made
exclusively for the Oregon Flute Store. As a result the “Maya” was born. The
“Maya” is a six-holed drone flute precisely tuned using the traditional Native American pentatonic minor scale.
The chambers interiors are finished using tung oil and the flutes exterior is finished with a non-toxic patina satin finish.
This flute is silky to the touch. All flutes come with a stylized “bird” fetish.
Our favorite part of this flute is the wonderful cleft mouthpiece, which makes playing the single or
double mode a breeze. This dual chambered flute is a versatile and unusual instrument. Since each
barrel is totally independent of the other, the flute may be played like a single barrel flute by simply
positioning the lips on the right side of the mouthpiece so air enters only the right chamber. A slight
shift of the lips to the left brings the left chamber into play and the sound flowing from the flute
changes dramatically. The left barrel produces a drone tone, which mixes with the notes being played
on the right barrel creating a mystical sound that grabs the attention of anyone listening.
Available in the following keys (from highest to lowest): A $380; G, F ! $400; E $430; D $450
*All Guillermo flutes come complete with a soft case, care sheet with finger chart and certificate of authenticity
Clay Duet Flute—The “Tlapitzalli”
This clay duet flute is an authentic reproduction of the type of flutes used in ancient Mexico for ceremonial
purposes by the Aztecs and Mayan cultures. The originals were almost always adorned with the faces
of Deity’s or painted with colored designs. To create these replicas Guillermo hand fires each duet
flute for 12 hours then slip paints them with colored clays (Red/black) in the same manor.
Each flute is burnished with a smooth stone to give the flute a velvety feel.
The duet flute is two flutes in one. Each barrel is a separate flute with three finger holes that
are precisely tuned after firing using a diamond tool. The flute can be played using both
barrels to create a harmonizing tone or played separately to create two different single flutes. They are available in three tunings
above middle C: High (B with D), Medium (A! with C !) and Low (A with C). Each measures approximately 6-8 inches long
and comes with a leather, beaded strap and playing instructions. This flute is very durable and with proper care will last a
lifetime. Another exclusive available only here at the Oregon Flute Store. Your choice of key $220

NATIVE AMERICAN LOVE FLUTES
FROM RIVER CANE OR BAMBOO
J
by James R. Gilliland
ames R. Gilliland, a Native American artist and flute maker for 15 + years from the hills of North Alabama retired
from the Space Shuttle Program. He uses his engineering skills and Native American heart, to create a flute that sings.
One of his river cane flutes played on the International Space Station in 2002, and is now on display in the
Smithsonian National Native American Museum in Washington, DC. He was also commissioned by Dr. Kathleen
Joyce-Grendahl in 2004 to make the River Cane Flutes for the movie, The New World. James is a registered Native
American of Cherokee/Creek heritage. He is passing on his cultural tradition of flute making to his grandchildren,
Wayne, Wesley and Melissa who work with him.
Bamboo And Cane Flutes
For all of you who have been looking for low keyed cane flutes-here they are!
James has mastered the art of working with cane and bamboo combining
traditional methods with new technology to craft these flutes. He works with his
grandchildren to create for us the hard to find lower keys. They use only the finest
material taking the flute through a journey. Each flute is heat-treated, hand scraped, the
inside cleaned and sanded, cut to the correct length and the placement
of the playing holes calculated. The playing holes and the reed are burned into
the flute using traditional methods. Each playing hole is tuned using a digital
tuner. After the flute is completed it is impregnated with lacquer with a
vacuum/pressure process. After the lacquer is cured the flute is then sprayed with
up to 5 coats of clear lacquer and then waxed with carnauba wax for lasting
protection. These flutes will have a very traditional sound that no wooden flute
can duplicate. The following keys are available from highest to lowest:
High E, C, B, A: $80; Medium G: $100; Medium F!: $110; Medium F: $120; Low E: $130;
Low D: $160; Low C: $170; Low B: $180
Walking Stick Cane Flute
Do you worry about taking your flutes hiking? If so then this new cane walking flute by James Gilliland is the
solution. Jim has creatively integrated a high quality cane flute into a rugged handy walking stick. Imagine
walking your favorite trail with the aid of this 48 inch long rugged cane walking stick, and while resting,
playing your favorite song. Why carry your flutes when the flute can carry you?
High C; Medium G: $210
Different keys available by custom order for $14.50 more and subject to cane availability.

Musical Echoes Cane Flute Replica
James was honored to win First Place in the 2005 Musical Echoes Flute Makers
competition, which is a national event. His cane flute entry competed against wooden
flutes of all types of wood and one other cane flute. The judges, judging the competition
were Dock Green, Jeff Ball and Raymond Redfeather. Due to the overwhelming response
and interest in his winning flute, James offers an exact replica of the flute available to
you exclusively here at the Oregon Flute Store.
This low E six-hole River Cane flute has an incredible voice because of its unique
design. It features an inlayed Ebony roost and sound mechanism that produces a
voice with volume and a slight reverb. The last three finger holes are augmented
in a crescent shape so that the player doesn’t have to reach the center of the
flute to get a good seal on them. In addition, James has added a unique
tapered and rounded mouthpiece for more comfortable playing. The
Kokopelli block is carved from spalted dogwood and features an inlayed
turquoise eye. Included is a second low profile simple block so that the
flute can travel with ease. The foot end of the flute is inlayed with red
pipestone, turquoise and malachite. The inlay close to the mouth
end is inlayed with Blue Pipestone, turquoise and malachite.
These Musical Echoes Cane flute Replicas will be available
only by special order and require construction time of 46 weeks. $600.
The inlay material for the roost and decorative
designs may vary depending on availability of
materials.
Does not qualify for combination flute package or any other discount
offer. Six-hole collector’s card does apply.
“Congratulations on your big win!! Now everyone knows
what I’ve known for years! Your flutes are tops! The judges
were very impressed. As they were leaving, Jeff Ball picked
your flute up one more time and played it. He said, “I
want to play this one more time before I go.”

gathered from buffalo farming ranches. They are called Gemshorns,
an early forms of the recorder. They are classed in the Ocarina

PF SERIES FLUTES
by Amon Olorin
This instrument is the latest evolution in contemporary Native American
flutes by master flutemaker Ken Light. It is a precise ABS
plastic resin replica of Ken’s most popular handmade cedar
flute originally designed to scale and tuning specifications
provided by R. Carlos Nakai. These flutes represent the state-of-the-art in
contemporary Native flute design because they are not sensitive to
climate or temperature changes, resist moisture build-up, and yet, still
offer concert quality tone. They are two flutes in one by offering two
tunings provided by two body tubes that interchange on the mouthpiece.
The tunings are G-minor and F !-minor. Each instrument breaks down into
three pieces that fit into a cloth bag. This is an ideal flute for hiking and back-packing. Only $60

by Sam Kurz
Have you ever grabbed one flute to take and play and then arrived to your destination wishing you
had brought other keys as well? After 2 years of R&D, flute maker/recording artist Sam Kurz, has
created the perfect solution with this 5 N 1 flute system. It is constructed of travel worthy white
PVC, measures 14 inches long, and weighs in at only 18.5 ounces. Even James Bond
would be proud!
The system features one detachable mouthpiece and 5 tuning barrels in the keys of: High

attached to the mouthpiece. This system comes complete with a soft flute case roll that
provides a pocket for the mouthpiece and each
flute barrel. Simply slide each piece into its
pocket, roll it up and travel light with five
flutes ready to use. The case has an inventive iron on finger chart

CLAY BIRD WHISTLES
by Guillermo Martinez
T
he Aztec word Huilacapitzli refers to bird whistles and ocarinas used in ancient Mexico.
The prefix “Huila” means morning dove. Guillermo’s whistles are hand fired for 12
hours, then hand painted with Aztec designs using colored clays and burnished with a
smooth stone to give them a velvety feel. They are perfectly tuned using a special diamond
tool and are capable of precise clear musical tones. Offering a wonderful accompaniment
to the flute, great for flute gatherings and talking to our feathered friends.
All whistles come with neck carrying strap, and have a full set of how play instructions.
Quad Huilacapitzli
This is Guillermo’s favorite and most dramatic whistle used on his recordings and during
live performances. This instrument has four differently tuned chambers, which allow you to
play single or multiples. Combine two, three or even four for a wonderful harmonic effect.
The holes at the end of each tube can be covered to achieve a whole different sound. The
realism of the bird tones generated is remarkable. Approximately 5 inches long. $200
Double Huilacapitzli
This whistle is the same as the quad only in a economic double version with finger holes.
These finger holes in combination with the holes at the flutes end allow beautiful songs
to be played as well as create bird sounds. The longest barrel has two finger holes. The
shorter barrel has one finger hole. With this double you will quickly become the Piped
Piper of bird songs! Approximately 3½ inches long. $90
Tezcat (Single)
This clay Aztec bird whistle is held with the thumbs of both hands covering the end of
the “sounding tubes” and your index finger covering the finger holes. By adjusting the
position of your thumbs and fingers you can mimic almost any bird sound. In the full
open position it’s loud. It’s very responsive to your breath. Approximately 2 inches long.
$50
I have had the pleasure of examining and playing a little ocarina made by Guillermo Martinez.
The craftsmanship, including tuning, of this little ceramic aerophone is exceptionally good and I
find it fully comparable to Pre-Columbian ocarinas of Mexico.

ZAPOTEC CLAY INSTRUMENT
Bentro Yelagota—Death Whistle
by Nashtavewa (Nash)
If you have ever had the pleasure of listening to the music of Xavier Quijas Yxayotl, then
you may have heard the giant rush of mysterious wind that sent shivers through your
soul. The first time we experienced a live performance by Xavier Quijas Yxayotl and
the rush of a Death Whistle, our hair stood on end and we knew we wanted to offer
this unique instrument. We commissioned Nash to create a replica whistle to share
with our customers. These whistles will simply astound anyone that hears them and
are very sought after. This particular whistle and others similar were used by tribes
people indigenous to Central America, including Zapotec, Aztecs, and Mayans. It
was used to announce the death of a tribal member. The members of the “sacred
house” would play this whistle by itself and then later along with a drum, a conch
shell, and a flute. It was also used on the “Day of
the Dead” with a combination of other instruments.
These whistles are hand sculpted from terra cotta clay
and fired in a kiln by artist Nashtavewa (Nash). He was
born in a Zapotec village named “Ltavehua” located in the
jungle forest on the southeast coast of Mexico in the Oaxaca region. His parents are
traditional artists specializing in clay whistles, authentic Zapotec cookware and
traditional Zapotec ceremonial figures. Now, as a young adult, he is interested in his
tribal culture, traditions, ceremonies, and music. He has great appreciation for his
heritage and wants to share it with you. $100

EAGLE BONE WHISTLES
If you’ve ever heard the shrill of a soaring eagle or the music of R.Carlos Nakai, then you will appreciate the stirring
sound of this unique eagle bone whistle replica. This whistle is made from acrylic and antique finished to give it a
stunning authentic appearance. It is almost impossible to tell it apart from the real thing. These whistles have been
used in many recordings and featured in many films. No flute
collection would be complete without one. Even though these
eagle bone whistles are very hard to find, they are now
available through the Oregon Flute Store. Whistles are tuned
and come with a leather lanyard. They can be drilled with
finger holes to form a small flute. $60
