What is multiple sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS),
which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. MS interrupts the flow of information from the
brain to the body and stops people from moving.
Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The
progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Most
people with MS learn to cope with the disease and continue to lead satisfying, productive lives. Today, new
treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease.
Facts about MS
∫ Approximately 400,000 Americans have MS and about 200 people are
diagnosed about every week. Because the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) does not require U.S. physicians to report new cases,
and because symptoms can be completely invisible, the numbers can only
be estimated.
∫ Worldwide, MS affects about 2.5 million people.
∫ Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although MS
has been diagnosed in individuals as young as two and as old as 75.
∫ Nearly three times as many women as men have MS.
∫ Studies suggest that genetic factors make certain individuals more

Fundraising 101 – everything you need to know
Fundraising is the most important part of your participation in Bike MS. All participants are required to raise
a minimum of $350 and this minimum must be turned in by the day of the event in order to participate. Riders
fundraise in a variety of ways and raised an average of $900 per cyclist in 2012.
A Personal Appeal
E-mail and traditional letter-writing campaigns are the most successful ways to raise money. You can solicit
donations from a variety of sources such as:
∫ family, neighbors, friends, college friends, sorority/fraternity members (holiday card list, e-mail, address
book, social networking websites)
∫ colleagues and business associates (e-mail, rolodex, or inter-office mail)
The following are some ideas for a successful letter-writing campaign:
∫ Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with
your letter if using regular mail. If you are contacting
your donors via email, include your name and address to
send pledges and/or include a link to your personal Bike
MS fundraising webpage. Make it easy for your potential
donors to respond to you.
∫ Personalize your appeal by using familiar details about
yourself, or your history riding in the Bike MS event. If
the donor is not paying immediately by cash, check or
credit card, specify a deadline in order to get donations
to you in time to receive your prize.
∫ Follow up with a note, e-mail or phone call to all those
who have not responded.
∫ Always send a thank you note when you receive a
donation. After Bike MS, include details about your
day, and maybe even a photo to your top donors. Your
donors will be curious about your performance.
Asking over the phone and in person are also great ways
to make a personal appeal. Additional fundraising tips are
available in Fundraising and Prizes section of the Bike MS
website: www.bikemssocal.org.
Tracking Offline Donations
Some donors may prefer to make a
donation in the form of a check. To
have these donations appear on your
personal Web page Honor Roll at
www.bikemssocal.org,
follow the steps below.
• Select “Enter Offline Donations” in your
fundraising headquarters and enter any
offline donations or pledges you receive.
• When all checks are entered, print out a
report and mail it with your checks to:

Fundraising 101
1. Set a goal. All participants, regardless of age, are
required to raise a minimum of $350 (separate from
the registration fee) by the day of the event, October
6st, in order to receive your rider packet and bib –
both are needed to participate.
2. Set up your online fundraising campaign
by personalizing your personal fundraising page and
sending e-mails from your Participant Center online
at www.bikemssocal.org. Upload photos and share
why you are riding on both your website and in your
e-mails.
3. Kick off your fundraising by making a
personal donation. When your donors see that you
are financially committed to the cause, they will
support it too. After you have sponsored yourself,
ask everyone you know to support your efforts to
join the movement towards a world free of MS.
Tip: To find your personal donation page, click on
“Donate” at www.bikemssocal.org and search for

P lan a Fu ndraising Ev e n t
Fundraising events are a popular way for individuals and teams to meet their fundraising goals. Fundraising
events may include silent auctions, poker nights, garage sales, bake sales, wine and cheese parties, and other
house parties. Many local restaurants will host a fundraiser by contributing a percentage of their sales from a
specific night to you. All they ask is that you invite all of your friends and family to dine at their establishment
and tell them they are with you when they pay their bill. Contact your favorite eatery to see if they will
contribute to your fundraising success!
The Southern California & Nevada Chapter can support your fundraising events in the following ways:
∫Providing materials about multiple sclerosis and the National MS Society. It is important to remember
to incorporate the mission of creating a world free of MS into your event.
∫
P roviding the Bike MS logo for your events (within our branding guidelines). Please note that all use
of the Bike MS or Society logo must be pre-approved by Chapter staff.
∫
Listing your event on the Bike MS Facebook page.

What’s better than a generous gift to the National MS Society? A gift that is twice as generous thanks to a
third party’s matching gift program!
Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that, in effect, doubles (or in some cases even
triples) your gift to the National MS Society. By participating in these programs you and your sponsors can
double your dollars and significantly increase the impact that your contribution will make toward creating a
world free of MS. Look up a company at www.matchinggift.com.
Companies have various methods by which you can submit your matching gift request: online forms,
automated phone systems, or a paper form that you submit to the National MS Society when turning in your
pledges. Contact your company’s human resources officer (or if your donor’s company offers matching gifts,
have them do the same) to find out your options. They will give you a matching gift application; fill it out and
send it to us. We’ll take it from there!

Team Village: A place of celebration
Team Village is located in the heart of the festivities at San
Buenaventura State Beach and close to the action: the beer and wine garden, massage tent, VIP tent, and
food. This is a great place for your team to meet after finishing the first day of the ride. There will also be
contest for the Best Team Tent. Invite your friends, family, and co-workers to your tent for more fun! Space is
limited so reserve your tent in Team Village today!

Safety
The National MS Society and Bike MS: Coastal
Challenge is committed to providing a quality
cycling experience by enforcing safety precautions
while ensuring that all participants enjoy a fun
experience. For this reason, tips on group riding,
bike maintenance, managing road hazards and
cycling rules of the road have been included in
this guide. It is our hope that you will find this
information useful and easy to incorporate into all
your cycling experiences.
Get to know your bike, learn basic repairs and
adjustments, and ride confidently and safely in
traffic by taking a cycling class. Many classes provide
essential riding skills and techniques to adults
and children. For more information and a list of
local classes, dates and times visit the Training and
Resources section of www.bikemssocal.org.
Bicycle Maintenance Safety Checklist
All cyclists are responsible for keeping their riding
equipment in good working order. Get into the
habit of checking your bicycle and equipment
before every ride. Small adjustments can help ensure
a successful finish.
We recommend visiting one of our official bike
shops for a complete pre-Bike MS tune up. On the
day of the ride, the wait for mechanics at our rest
stops can sometimes be very long, and we cannot
guarantee that they will be able to completely
repair your bicycle and get you back on the road.
Please come prepared, carry your own tubes and
necessary repair kits, and know how to use them.

rules of road
Kn ow the ling o
Group cycling has its own form of communication. The presence of
road hazards, directions, and need-to-know information is relayed
through the pack of riders by gestures and words. Remember to pass
all communication on to the next cyclist behind you in the group.
Speak loudly and clearly. The following are the most common terms
you may hear in group sponsored rides:
∫
∫
∫
∫
∫
∫
Bike MS: Coastal Challenge
participants must ride with
knowledge, respect and
awareness. If you are found
disobeying the rules of the road
or the rules of the event, you are
subject to ticketing and fines
by local law enforcement, and
you run the risk of having your
bib number pulled, removing
you from the ride. Please help us
keep all participants safe.
n your Left: This means a rider is approaching your left side.
O
Allow room to pass.
Car back: This means a car is approaching from the rear. All
riders make an effort to move to the right of the road in a single
file until the car passes. In most states, the law requires cyclists
to ride no more than two abreast. This ensures that traffic will
not be impeded, and will make passing easier and safer for the cyclists.
Gravel - Pothole - Sand - Tracks: Each of these messages is to alert the riders behind you of hazardous
road conditions. The words are combined with the gesture of pointing to the hazard well in advance.
Flat: This indicates that a rider has suffered a flat tire. Allow enough room for the rider to slow down
and move to the right side of the road or trail for repair. Offer assistance if needed.
Slowing: The cyclist in front of you is slowing down. Use caution and prepare to stop. Many cyclists use
the palm of their hand toward riders behind them to indicate slowing and stopping.
Stopping: This indicates that a rider ahead is stopping. Do not forget to unclip from your pedals,
if using.
Additional Safety Tips
At Bike MS events, our active route support team works to make the ride safe. Here are a few additional
suggestions to help keep everyone safe on the ride:
∫ Thumbs down for help: SAG vehicles will stop for you if you are off to the side of the road, off your bike,
and giving a “thumbs down” sign or holding your helmet in the air.
∫ Rest stop etiquette: All cyclists who enter a rest area must pull over, dismount and move completely
away from the road and rest-stop entrance. When exiting, move beyond the rest area and proceed with
caution on the right side of the road before merging with faster cyclists.
∫ Passing: Passing others and being passed occurs continuously during the ride. Call out “passing on your
left” and allow time for the cyclist being overtaken to move to the right—then pass safely.
∫ Mechanical problems: Examine mechanical problems and change flats completely off the road. If you
have a problem you cannot fix yourself, flag down a SAG van and/or seek a mechanic at the next
rest stop.

training
Bike MS: Coastal Challenge will be here before you know it, so it’s important to make sure your body and
your bike are ready. The key to making the ride a success lies in consistent training and preparation. Here
are some basic step to get you started:
Step 1: Use the Bike MS Online Training Tools at www.bikemssocal.org to help you prepare for
the ride.
Step 2: Have your bike professionally inspected. All Bike MS participating bike shops can provide routine maintenance or repairs on your bike, as well as expert advice and cycling
information.
Step 3: Track your mileage on gmap-pedometer.com. An important part of training is assessing
your improvement.
Step 4: Participate in other organized cycling events and/or rides. You’ll have a much safer and
enjoyable ride once you learn the dynamics of group cycling.
Step 5: M
ake training fun by starting or joining training rides. Local cycling groups and bike
shops offer weekly training rides throughout Southern California.

questions
Event Logisitics:
Where can I park on the day of Bike MS and how much does it cost?
Parking will be available at San Buenaventura State Beach. Please check our website frequently in the weeks leading
up to the event to find out more about parking information and costs.
What if it rains?
Bike MS takes place rain or shine.
What do I do if I get a flat tire?
We highly encourage all participants to know basic safety and repair skills, including fixing a flat tire. Be
prepared and bring your own pump and extra tubes for your bike. However, if you are still unable to make the
repair, marshals and SAG vans will accompany riders along all three routes. Should you need assistance, please
alert a ride marshal or SAG vehicle. If a marshal is unable to assist you with the repair, a SAG vehicle will take
you to a rest stop where mechanical support is available. Please note that the wait for assistance and/or a ride
to the nearest rest stop can be long. By waiting, you run the risk of not being allowed to finish the route. To
help avoid this, check out our safety and training web pages for information on classes where you can learn
basic safety and repair skills.
Is there a minimum age requirement to participate in Bike MS?
Yes–riders must be at least 12 years old to participate. Riders under 18 years of age must complete a notarized
waiver, which is signed by an authorized parent or guardian, in order to register and must be accompanied by
an authorized parent or guardian 21 years of age or older at all times while participating in Bike MS.
Are non-riding family and friends encouraged to participate in the weekend’s festivities?
OF COURSE! There are a number of opportunities for you and your family/friends to enjoy the ride together.
As you know, volunteers are an integral part of the success of the event—volunteering is a great way to get
your friends and family involved. Please visit the Volunteer section of our website for job descriptions and to
register. Additionally, we invite your family and friends to join you at the overnight and at the finish line for
the festivities. We will have activities and ample parking at both locations for your family and friends.
I am coming from out of town and want to rent a bike in Ventura. Do you have any suggestions?
Yes, please visit www.venturabikedepot.com to find out information about renting a bike for the
event weekend.

questions
What if my company wants to match my donation?
To take part in the Matching Gifts Program, please visit your Human Resources Department and ask for a
matching gift form. Make sure you include your name and team name, if applicable, on the matching gift form
so we can apply the match to your individual account correctly. Send the completed form to our office. Please
include a printout of the online donation or a copy of the check if possible.
How long after I send in a check does it take to show up on my personal Web page?
It depends how many checks are coming into the office and how close it is to the event. Checks that are sent prior
to the event can take two to four weeks to process. Any donations you hand in the day of the event can take up
to six weeks to show up on your account. To avoid the wait, encourage your donors to donate online. Online
donations are safe and easy! All online donations will immediately appear on your Web page scroll and will
appear exactly as the donor enters it. The deadline to mail in checks is September 21th. After the 21th, please bring
all checks to the event to ensure credit by October 6th.

What is the Centry Club?
Membership into the Top 100 club is an honor awarded to our top 100 fundraisers from the previous year’s
bike event. These 100 individuals have exhibited outstanding fundraising achievements that deserve to be
recognized.

Teams:
What is the benefit of starting a team?
Participating in Bike MS is more fun when you’re part of a team; participants who are part of a team raise more
money than individual riders. Teams have access to a meeting area at the event and get the chance to participate in
team contests with great prizes.
How many people do I have to have on my team?
Teams must consist of four or more members in order to receive any team recognition, awards, and prizes.
Can my team hand in our donations together with our team captain?
No. All donations must be handed in individually. Every participant is required to raise a minimum of $350
in order to be able to ride in Bike MS 2012. Fundraising prizes and incentives are based on individual
fundraising success.
What if I already registered as an individual but want to start/join a team?
We can make that change for you. Contact us at bikemssocalnmss.org or 310.479.4456.
