Eighth Sunday After Pentecost
Welcome
Our service follows a liturgical tradition handed down to us since the time of the Apostles. Please follow
along, and participate by reading the portions in bold. Some people choose to follow the ancient Jewish
tradition (see Ezekiel 7) of making a “cross” sign at certain portions of the liturgy. Those wishing to do so,
may, at portions marked with a (+) sign.

America (ACNA). This includes prayers, confessions, and creeds from the past 2000 years of church

As Anglicans who observe the Church Calendar, we now enter in to the Season of
Pentecost, lasting from now until later November. During this season, we reflect
upon gift of the Holy Spirit, given to the church on the Day of Pentecost, as recorded
in Acts 2. We believe that the miraculous work begun that day has continued through
to the present day, and the Pentecost Season reminds us of the intersection between
our story, and that of the early church.
Ministry of The Word of God
Our service is divided in to two sections: the
Ministry of the Word of God, and the Ministry of
the Holy Communion. The first section primarily
focuses on the scriptures, in light of all Jesus Christ
has accomplished for us, as they are prayed,
confessed, and explained.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no

Prayers of the People
Father, we pray for your holy catholic* church;
That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the church may truly and humbly serve you;
That your Name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; especially Archbishop Foley Beach,
and Bishop Todd Hunter;
That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.
Hear us, Lord, as we lift up to you the following ministries and churches;
That they may faithfully serve you in unity and peace:

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
especially for President Barack Obama, Governor Jerry Brown, and Mayor Carol
Garcia;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in your sight.
Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to the departed eternal rest;
Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for those in need.

Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.
The Celebrant concludes with the following prayer
Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator
and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, (+)

And now, a collective prayer as we reflect upon Orlando, Dallas, Minneapolis and
Baton Rouge:
Heavenly Father, in your Word you have given us a vision of that holy City to
which the nations of the world bring their glory: Behold and visit, we pray,
the cities of of the world and our nation. Renew the ties of mutual regard
which form our civic life. Send us honest and able leaders. Enable us to
eliminate poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with
righteousness, and justice with order, and that men and women from
different cultures and with differing talents may find with one another the
fulfillment of their humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

Priest here reads the comfortable words, then says:

Creedal Confession
Nicene Creed
(4th Century)
This creed, drafted at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, responded to the heretical teachings of Arius, who
preached Jesus as a non-eternal, created being. At the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, this creed
underwent further modification, in order to better communicate a Biblical understanding of the Trinity.
Together with the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed has helped establish the boundaries that define
“Christian” and unify followers of Christ for almost 2000 years.
Followers of Christ, what do you believe?
We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all
things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father
before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not
made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.
Who, for us and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the
Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us
under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again,
according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of
the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead;
whose kingdom shall have no end.
And we believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from
the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and
glorified; who spoke by the prophets.
And we believe one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one
baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead (+),
and the life of the world to come.

Ministry of The Holy Communion
The second section of our service, The Ministry of The Holy Communion,
focuses on the sacrifices and praise that we, and all the saints throughout history,
have given to God in response to all He has done for us through His Son, Jesus
Christ. Many of these words have been sung or recited by Christ followers around the world for
over 1800 years!
Offering Ourselves and Our Gifts
Christ followers support the church’s mission and ministry through offering a sacrificial portion of our
resources–time, talents, possessions–as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace. This
pattern presents itself to us throughout the scriptures. (See, for example, Deuteronomy 26; Proverbs 3:
8,9; Malachi 3:10) Many at Incarnation make their regular contributions online via our website, as well
as during our worship services.
Offertory Prayer
Through Christ may we continually offer to God the sacrifice of praise,
that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his Name. May we not neglect
to do good and to share what we have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to
God. (-Based on Hebrews 13:15, 16)

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when
we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent

Epiclesis
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise
and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these
gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your
Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also (+)
that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy,
and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal

The Breaking of the Bread
The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.
Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

The Prayer of Humble Access
We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our
own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies.
We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table.
But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy.
Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus
Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his
body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we
may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed
are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

Instructions for the Eucharist:
The Eucharist (meaning thanksgiving) is open to all who would consider themselves baptized Christians, regardless
of tradition or background. As you come forward, you may take a piece of bread, eat it, and then drink from the
common cup, or you may dip it in the wine chalice, and then eat it. There is a chalice on the table filled with
grape juice for those unable to partake of the wine.
You don’t have to know all the answers, nor do you need “perfect” faith. God has faithfully met people throughout
the ages by way of these words and elements. Whatever struggles or doubts you may have, He will faithfully meet
you through these means of grace.
If you find yourself unsure of your standing with God, there are prayers on the last page of this worship folder
that can help you. Please take advantage of this time to consider all God has done for you through Jesus Christ.
If you or your children would like to come forward to witness the table, but not partake, you are welcome to do so.
Just cross your arms, and the pastor will pray a blessing over you.
The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people with these words:
The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen.
The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen. (+)

If you are not able to receive Communion, please use this time to meditate on one of the following
prayers. If you are not communing and would like to receive a blessing please come up and cross your
arms when the pastor comes to you.
Prayer for Those Searching for Truth
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost
of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me,
teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent,
convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise.
Amen.
Prayer of Belief
Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am
more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my
punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised
from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Commitment
Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your
church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of
your Spirit. Amen.
