KEEPING A FAMILIAR FACE CLOSE ELIN AND MARTIN WAITE EAST SUSSEX, ENGLAND ANNUAL REPORT 2014 RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF CHARLOTTE TABLE OF CONTENTS PG 3 - Hope Stays Here - Cole vs. Cancer YO U R LOV E L I V E S H E R E This past year, the wonderful supporters and volunteers of the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte proved, yet again, how valuable they are to PG 5 - Coach Rivera our mission. Thanks to all of you, 2014 was another year of growth for us PG 7 - House Stats and the entire RMH of Charlotte family. PG 9 - RMH of Charlotte/The Sandbox PG 11 - Events PG 15 - Financials PG 17 - Thank You PG 19 - Donors/Volunteers Your dedication to our mission allows us to provide a “home away from home” for the families of seriously sick and injured children. During this unimaginable situation we eliminate unnecessary worries, allowing parents to stand strong for their children. Without the House, the basic needs of many families in distress would go unfulfilled. Simple necessities we all take for granted, like a warm meal, a place to bathe, and a bed to sleep in, can place additional strain on families during times of unbearable stress. Thanks to your devotion, you offer families support 365 days a year. Through your generosity, your hands open our doors to those in need. It is your love our guests feel when they step into the House. From all of us at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, thank you. Thank you for another year of growth. Thank you for nobly supporting our mission. A BRIEF HISTORY/MISSION STATEMENT The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte opened in 2011 with a single, prevailing Thank you for the love. belief: healing happens together. With that ideal in mind, our House has served as a home away from home, allowing families to stay close by the side of their sick or injured child. With nowhere else to turn, these families rely on the RMH of Charlotte to support them in their time of need. Mona Johnson-Gibson Elise Redmond Executive Director Board President HOPE STAYS HERE COLE VS. CANCER Cole and I first arrived at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte in October of 2013. But our journey here began many years earlier. In 2006, Cole was diagnosed with DSRCT, a rare form of sarcoma. He was five years old. Local doctors believed Cole’s cancer was inoperable, and they had little hope he would survive. Cole endured months of harsh inpatient chemotherapy before a friend encouraged us to get a second opinion from a world-renowned surgeon in New York. At the time, such a trip was out of reach for us. Luckily, the Ronald McDonald House came to our rescue. Cole and I traveled to New York City, a spark of hope lit in our hearts. I’ll never forget this first experience with the Ronald McDonald House’s generosity. The home-away-from-home they provided made it possible for us to find a surgeon who removed 100% of Cole’s cancer! Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of our battle. Cole suffered a relapse in 2010, and back into the trenches we went. In 2013, Cole’s oncologist came to work at Charlotte’s Levine Cancer Center. In November of 2013, a specialized liver surgeon removed half of Cole’s liver and his entire tumor. For only the second time since he was five years old, Cole was cancer free! Once again, our elation was short lived. Days after returning home, Cole was hospitalized with life threatening surgical complications. We took an emergency medical flight back to Charlotte, where our new friends at RMH of Charlotte welcomed us with open arms. Although we continue to face a rollercoaster of medical challenges, Cole’s defiance of his initial prognosis keeps us hopeful, and the Ronald McDonald House supports us. My memories of 2014 are filled with long months spent leaning on the RMH of Charlotte for support. Though we faced so much uncertainty, we could always count on the warm, homelike environment and smiling faces of the House. The staff and volunteers work so hard to make things easier on our family. They always treat Cole like a celebrity, which keeps his spirits high when he needs it the most. We feel spoiled by the love and dedication of those involved with the House. Tickets to several Hornets’ games were a huge surprise! Generous donations of tickets to any sort of event allow Cole and I to make the most of our precious “good days”. Today, Cole is receiving palliative care, fighting the cancer that returned near the end of 2014. Although his body is too broken to endure further treatment, we continue to manage his health with the help of a dedicated team at Levine Cancer Center. Until the day I can take my son home, the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte is our home, and its people are our family. Without the RMH of Charlotte, there is no way I could afford to be in another state, unable to work, and still provide Cole the care he needs. KEEPING A FAMILIAR FACE CLOSE COLE AND LAURA OWENS FERGUSON, MO With the help of the House, our spark of hope is still alive. I know this to be true because Cole shares his with every family we encounter. I have seen his hope create a spark in other families. In this way, Cole is winning his fight against cancer in more ways than he knows. 4 A CHAMPION OFF THE FIELD COACH RIVERA’S BOWL-A-PALOOZA For the second year, local bowlers put their skills to the test against Panthers’ Head Coach Ron Rivera. Coach Rivera kindly donates his time to this event, and he doesn’t come alone. Coach brings enough Panthers’ players for one to join every team. Participants can get up close and personal with the celebrities they root for every Sunday. Over the past two years, Coach Rivera’s Bowl-A-Palooza contributed $132,000 to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte. We are just one of many organizations who benefit from the Rivera family’s extensive philanthropy. When not hosting charitable bowling contests and chasing NFL championships, Coach Rivera and his wife, Stephanie, also support the Humane Society and USO. This is one outstanding family. We are all lucky they call Charlotte “Home”. This year, one young Panthers fan was especially excited for his chance to meet Coach Rivera and hang with his favorite players. Fourteen-year old Cole, featured in Hope Stays Here, was counting down the days to Coach Rivera’s Bowl-A-Palooza. Unfortunately, when the day finally came, Cole found himself in the hospital yet again. Unable to attend, this brave young man was heartbroken. Coach Ron Rivera caught wind of Cole’s story and decided to do something about it. The moment Bowl-A-Palooza ended, the coach and his wife drove straight to the hospital. It may have been the most wonderful surprise of Cole’s life: his idol personally coming to pay him a visit. Any hospital stay is tough on a child, but when we next saw Cole, he seemed to have an extra bounce in his step. There is no doubt he will ever forget that day, and the time he spent chatting with Coach Rivera. The kindness and compassion shown by the Rivera family made a huge impact on Cole, just as their generosity makes a huge impact on the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, and every other charity they support. 6 A LABOR OF LOVE A mission as ambitious as ours takes an enormous amount of commitment and perseverance. Our supporters, staff, and volunteers dedicate countless hours and immeasurable love to supporting our guest families. For 365 days every year, our doors are as open as our hearts. The figures listed here show a lot. They tell the story of an entire year in the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte. However, there is one thing numbers and words can never convey: our appreciation. 603 Families served in 2014: 14.9 Average stay (in days): NC counties served: 83 Nights Stayed: 8,998 International countries served: 6 Total Guests: 2,499 States served: 34 8 ARIONNA JACOBS TABOR CITY, NC RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF CHARLOTTE & THE SANDBOX: LOCKING ARMS TO SERVE THE CHARLOTTE COMMUNITY The Sandbox is a Charlotte, North Carolina-based nonprofit organization serving the families of children facing cancer and other life-altering diagnosis. During the most tumultuous times of their lives, The Sandbox stands tall with families to serve their most critical and day-to-day needs. Eliminating even the smallest of worries allows these families to focus on what’s most important: believing in a favorable outcome and the healing of their child’s health. Though based in Charlotte, North Carolina, The Sandbox offers its services across the Carolinas and to date, has served more than 3,000 families. The Sandbox and the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte are a perfect match, uniting to serve families during inexplicably trying times. The parents of sick and injured children have a safe and comfortable place to stay at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, and The Sandbox provides families with day-to-day items, such as personal hygiene products, household supplies, and nonperishable food items. The story of Arionna is a prime example of The Sandbox and the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte working in unison. Recently, Arionna’s family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte while she received treatments for cancer. After an introduction from a hospital social worker, The Sandbox invited Arionna to their 2014 An Evening of Believing℠ Prom. An Evening of Believing℠ Prom is an annual September event catering to children, teens, and young adults facing cancer or life altering illness. The experience emerged straight from a young girl’s fantasy. Arionna was treated to a professional hair and makeup consultation, garnished with dazzling accessories, and bestowed with a prom dress fit for a queen. The extravagant fairytale continued into the evening. An escort of police motorcycles led Arionna’s limo to the event. She stepped out onto a Purple Carpet lined with paparazzi, and walked into a magical dream. By night’s end, The Sandbox named Arionna the event’s Prom Queen. Most importantly, this brave young woman enjoyed a positivity-filled evening with loved ones amidst her diagnosis and current circumstances. The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte and The Sandbox each believe in the best outcomes for those they honor to impact, and together, they’re even better. Fostering a positive and forward-thinking mind frame enables families to better support their child’s health journey. It is imperative that organizations like the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte and The Sandbox work together to further serve the community. Both organizations strongly believe that nonprofits locking arms further strengthens their reach and specialties of service. There is no competition; Rather, an understanding and respect to best serve those most in need of help. 10 APRIL 24th, 2014 GIRL’S NIGHT OUT Once again, Charlotte’s finest ladies partied down to benefit the families of seriously ill or injured children.
