trey’s piggy bank
At A Swine Evening, the annual fundraiser for A Child’s
Place, a piggy bank represents many things. It represents
the famous celebrity who autographed it. It represents an
investment in our students to create a better future for them.
It represents the hardship A Child’s Place families experience
due to their lack of savings and resources.
But for Trey, a piggy bank represents something very
simple: a way to get to school when he missed the bus.
Trey, a fifth-grader, worked with his A Child’s Place Student
Advocate to improve his attendance and behavior at school.
Together, they developed a reward system to celebrate
days he was in school and on his best behavior.
As she saw small successes, Trey’s Student Advocate began
challenging him to have a perfect week. One week late this
spring, Trey was especially motivated to achieve his goal. By
Thursday, it looked like he would succeed…
until he overslept on Friday and missed the school bus.
Since Trey’s family was already at work, he quickly came up
with Plan B. He pulled his precious piggy bank containing
just $20 off the shelf and called a taxi service. When the taxi
arrived, he proudly took his piggy bank with him and
used his savings as payment for the ride.
Once at school, Trey proudly told his A Child’s Place Student
Advocate, “Ms. Lindsay, I had to find a way to get to
school. You asked me to try to be great all week.”
The determination Trey displayed is something A Child’s
Place strives to instill in all of our students. As we begin
the new school year, our school-based teams will work
with students to convey the importance of being at
school every day and create a positive environment that
celebrates their presence.
Please consider supporting students like Trey by returning the enclosed gift remittance envelope with your
tax-deductible contribution. Here’s how your gift will assist A Child’s Place in meeting our students’ needs:

4th annual swing fore a child’s place golf
tournament hits it big
Players gathered at River Run Country Club on Monday,
June 1 for an afternoon on the course filled with prizes,
food and fun to raise awareness and support for A Child’s
Place. This year’s event specifically supports the work of A
Child’s Place at Walter G. Byers School, a Pre-K through
8th grade school with one of the highest populations
of students experiencing homelessness. Thanks to the
generous investment of sponsors, participants, donors
and volunteers, the tournament raised over $175,000. This
ensures that A Child’s Place is there to provide students
and their families with the necessary support, supplies
and guidance during their time of crisis.
thank you!
BEFORE
Two BB&T offices worked with A Child’s Place on their
Lighthouse Projects this spring. One group purchased highly
needed uniforms and helped with a field day at Walter G.
Byers School. Thanks to the other group, our conference
rooms and resource closet received much needed makeovers.
Friendship Missionary Baptist
Church Quilting Circle provided 47
beautiful handmade quilts to present
to our families as housewarming gifts.
Holy Trinity Catholic Middle
School selected A Child’s Place as
the beneficiary for their 7th Annual
Bulldog 5k Run.

AFTER
Jeff Moose walked 600 miles
from Manteo, NC to Murphy,
NC to spread awareness
about the needs of our
students and raise money for
A Child’s Place.
All children are at risk of failure but those
experiencing the chaos of homelessness are
at the greatest risk of falling behind in school.
In an effort to erase the impact of homelessness
on academic performance, A Child’s Place
provides immediate, emergency services and
referrals to children and their families in the
midst of crisis. We stand by families as they
progress from crisis to safer housing situations all the while keeping the student focused on
academics and learning.
ECM Solutions selected A Child’s Place as their charity for
the year and their first ever No Limit Texas Hold’Em Poker
Tournament raised $17,000. They also volunteered at the end
of year field day at Hidden Valley Elementary.
A Child’s Place focuses on two key areas:
student support
family support
Resolve the student’s
immediate basic needs
for food, clothing and
shelter while creating a
case plan that supports
their continued focus on
education in one of our
partner schools.
Assess and advocate
within and on behalf
of the student’s family
through a case plan to
resolve issues that led to
the family’s immediate
homeless crisis.
This unique partnership
of student and family
advocacy creates a holistic
approach encouraging our
students to stay focused on
their education, develop a
passion for learning and use
the power of their education
to change their lives.

Our annual fundraiser, A Swine Evening, was met with enormous success
this spring, raising over $270,000 for the agency to provide critical support
services to students experiencing homelessness in our partner CharlotteMecklenburg Schools. This total not only exceeded our fundraising goal
but was also the most successful in the event’s history!
The whimsical centerpieces and decorations captured the essence of the
theme, Oh the Places Piggies Will Go! This served as a perfect reminder
of the purpose for the event: to help children in a homeless crisis develop
a passion for learning and use the power of their education to take them
where they want to go.
A big thank you to our sponsors, donors, celebrities, guests and volunteers
for making A Swine Evening 2015 the best year yet!

help create STARS this school year!
It’s a new school year and children are starting
school in a homeless crisis. They need your help
to ensure they are prepared to succeed in the
classroom. Here are three ways that you can create
STARS (Students Today Achieving Results) this
school year:
 Provide school supplies and uniforms from
our Back-to-School Needs List located on
our website.
 Become a supportive mentor or tutor to one of our students.
 Make a financial contribution to ensure A Child’s Place teams are
present in school to provide support, guidance and supplies to children
and families.
Contact Diosa Adams at [email protected] for more information
about supply drives and volunteer opportunities.
We look forward to your partnership this school year!

a child’s place works to erase the impact of homelessness on
