About Frank H. Netter, MD (1906-1991) “Medicine’s Michelangelo”
Celebrated as the foremost medical illustrator of the human body and how it works,
Dr. Frank H. Netter’s medical illustration career began in the 1930s when the CIBA
Pharmaceutical Company commissioned him to prepare illustrations of the major organs
and their pathology. Dr. Netter’s incredibly detailed, lifelike renderings were so well
received by the medical community, CIBA published them in a book in 1948. It was
followed by The Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations , the first volume of which was
published in 1953 and the last in 1993. Nearly 13 years after his death, Dr. Netter remains
the acknowledged master of medical illustration.
About John A. Craig, MD
Dr. Craig’s association with Netter dates back to 1972 when he worked as an ophthalmic illustrator at Baylor
College of Medicine from 1972-1983, in addition to painting for CIBA and then Novartis. Following in the
Netter tradition, Dr. Craig is now Senior Artist and Consultant for Clinical Symposia, and is a contributor to the
Disease Education Series (CD-ROM) as well as the Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations. Dr. Craig continues to
provide original paintings for new Netter books and software. He received his medical degree and a postgraduate
degree in ophthalmology from The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston.
About Carlos A.G. Machado, MD
A native of Brazil, Dr. Machado received his medical degree at the Faculdade de Medicina de Teresopolis and his
postgraduate degree in cardiology from Santa Casa de Misericordia in Rio de Janeiro. Dr. Machado’s illustrations
can be seen in many Clinical Symposia, The Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations, and the acclaimed Atlas
of Human Anatomy, Third Edition. In addition to his original paintings, Dr. Machado has meticulously
updated many of Dr. Netter’s original plates.
About James A. Perkins, MS, MFA
Professor Perkins graduated from Cornell University in 1985 and pursued graduate training in vertebrate
paleontology and anatomy at the University of Texas, Austin and the University of Rochester. He then studied
medical illustration at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), receiving the Master of Fine Arts degree in 1992.
Professor Perkins has illustrated more than a dozen medical books including Robbins’ Pathologic Basis of Disease
and the 28th edition of Dorland’s Illustrated Medical Dictionary.

John T. Hansen, PhD, Consulting Editor
The ultimate anatomy atlas for medical study, clinical reference, and
patient education, this updated masterpiece offers 534 of Netter’s
own accurate, clear, and beautifully rendered illustrations along with
eight Netter-style drawings rendered by Carlos A.G. Machado, MD.

surface anatomy plate to draw attention to the surface features
that anticipate the underlying anatomy and highlight the value
of careful observation in clinical medicine.
• New Radiographic Images — For further investigation into
anatomical detail.
• New and Revised Anatomical Images — Some plates were
selected from The Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations’
13-volume masterwork. Other images have been slightly
revised to reflect current knowledge.

Timeless in its depiction of anatomical structures
• Netter’s beautifully drawn color plates facilitate the understanding of key anatomical
relationships in the human body.
• Anatomical terminology is consistent throughout the Atlas and
conforms to the International Anatomical Terminology (Terminologia
Anatomica).
• Common eponyms are retained parenthetically.
• Available in both casebound and paperback bindings.
Even when not required, more students choose Netter’s Atlas of Human

Limbs and Trunk
Serge Tixa
Instructor of Anatomy and Palpatory Anatomy
Swiss School of Osteopathy
Lausanne, Switzerland
This one-of-a-kind authoritative text makes palpatory anatomy
— the manual inspection of surface forms — come alive
through Serge Tixa’s visualization palpation technique, manual
investigation of surface forms
(MISF), and detailed how-to visual
guides. It incorporates nearly 70
Netter illustrations and over 700 photographs of the neck,
trunk, sacrum, and upper and lower extremities.
This breakthrough atlas will help students learn
how to identify different anatomical structures
(bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves)
as they work through complex anatomical
constructs.
Each Section is introduced with a series of
relevant Netter illustrations. Chapters continue
with detailed photographs, illustrations, and
descriptions of the gross anatomical structures,
regions, and topography, and its musculature and
innervation. Students will get a close-up look

Forthcoming!
Netter’s Atlas of Pharmacology is a concise, illustrative atlas organized by
organ systems and further subcategorized by major pathophysiologic
conditions affecting particular organ systems. Its strength comes
from the integration of Netter’s normal anatomy/physiology and
pathophysiology illustrations with detailed, mechanism-of-action
illustrations of pharmacologic concepts for a visual presentation of the very complex
pharmacodynamic relationship between drugs and the body.
Divided by specific organ systems, each chapter shows how drugs are used for specific
disorders of that system. The authors include clear, concise notes under each image,
highlighting the important elements of each principle.
Netter’s Atlas of Pharmacology makes an excellent adjunct review and reference source for
medical, dental, pharmacy, allied health, and undergraduate pharmacology courses.

Netter’s Neurology
H. Royden Jones, MD
Lahey Clinic
Burlington, MA
This new clinical guide provides the reader
with the best of an atlas, an anthology
of clinical files, as well as an important
basic introduction to the requisite
information needed to diagnose and
initiate treatment of the various neurologic
and neuromuscular
disorders.
Using a real-life,
clinically based
format, each
chapter of Netter’s
Neurology begins
with case vignettes
from the Lahey
Clinic Neuroscience
Department files to
provide readers with a clinical frame of
reference. These clinical records set the
stage for the discussion of the basics of
the specific neurologic disorder including
history, epidemiology, clinical presentation,
differential diagnosis, testing modalities,
therapy, and prognosis.
Netter’s Neurology incorporates over
350 Netter illustrations from basic
anatomy displayed in actual size to
images of the highlights of most
clinical neurologic disorders. These are
supplemented by modern neuroimaging,
or photomicrography, further defining
the anatomy of the specific areas of
dysfunction.
