Annual Report 2012 - Hawke`s Bay Hockey
Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association Inc. ANNUAL REPORT 2012 Hockey has been played throughout Hawke’s Bay by both men and women since the late 1800’s with archives showing representative teams competing for the Province since that time. Initially and for most of the past century, Hawke’s Bay Hockey operated as an umbrella Association with 3 sub-associations in Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay, then in 1977, the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association, in its present form, was formally incorporated. For many years, hockey was primarily based at Marewa Park in Napier and Frimley Park in Hastings but with various other parks used throughout the Region. The completion of the artificial turf in 1990 (initially a sand-based turf) at Park Island saw not only a shift of Club hockey from Marewa Park, but also a dramatic change to the game in Hawke’s Bay. A second water turf was completed in 2004 and the original turf converted to a water-based turf in 2006 Vision: To create a regional centre of excellence that promotes and develops the sport of hockey in Hawke’s Bay, thereby setting the benchmark for other sporting codes. The Board is removed from the day to day management of the Association’s affairs which is carried out by the General Manager, paid staff and volunteers. Standing Committees of the Board of Governors: • High Performance Committee • Publicity Committee • Competitions Committee • Judiciary Committee • Umpires Committee 2012 Board of Governors Back Row: Andrew Knox, Neil Edmundson (President), Joss Prussing Front Row: Steven Knox, Phil Teague, Iain Taylor (Chairperson), Don Clark (General Manager) Inserts: Ro Hill, Geoff Blackmore The Association 5 The Association The Chairman Speaks T he year 2012 flew by on the back of a very busy representative and local playing programme, a wonderful relationship with the Mens and Womens Black Sticks as a consequence of Hawke’s Bay as Principal Partner of the Black Sticks and followed up with two test matches against India for the Black Sticks Womens teams at Park Island as well as a concerted effort to progress a third turf in Hawke’s Bay. Administration This year the Board approved a restructure of the organisation. This involved Don Clark moving from Operations Manager to General Manager with Matthew Witheford as Regional Development Management and Mark Ramage as Academy & Reps Manager. It was felt that this structure better reflected the roles carried out by those three key personnel. It also enabled a clear line of reporting from Don to the Board, with Don taking responsibility for the running of the entire operation of Hawke’s Bay Hockey. We were very sad to lose Viv Bicknell, our Administrative Assistant, who has been a stella performer for us in the short time that she has been at Hawke’s Bay Hockey. Unfortunately, for health reasons Viv resigned towards the end of 2012 and is missed by us. We are fortunate to be able to welcome Keri Gardiner as our new Administrator. Keri has filled in from time to time and assisted in managing Rep sides. She is best known for running the cafeteria and we warmly welcome her. I would like to pass on our thanks to Don Clark as General Manager for all he does for the Association. Administratively and financially the Organisation runs extremely smoothly and that is a tribute to Don’s work. Mark Ramage and Matthew Witheford are growing in their coaching and high performance roles, and are now looking to bed down some of their initiatives over the last year or so and which will be of immense benefit to hockey in our region. Neville Hocking continues to keep our grounds and facilities in great condition, and we are fortunate to have his dedication. Clubs It was pleasing to see that the Womens Club Competition in 2012 was more even. The merger of the Evergreens Womens Club under the Bay Independent umbrella seems to have been successful both administratively and from a coaching support point of view. One of the challenges for the Mens Competition is the dominance of two Club sides and that is something that the recent Club’s forum discussed. It is a challenge for our management and coaching teams that the Competition needs to provide better for not only those sides that want to compete at the highest level but also those sides who wish to grow to that level, as well as those who really wish to play at a more social level. Given our lack of player base, this creates a number of challenges. 6 Hawke’s Bay Hockey Annual Report 2012 In 2012 we experimented with having schools that played in the Mens Competition being also required to play in the Division 1 Boys Competition. Unfortunately, this had a negative effect overall in terms of the Division 1 Boys Competition and that initiative is unlikely to be repeated in 2013. Tests and Tournaments We were extremely privileged to host the first two Test matches in the Black Sticks Womens Test Series against India in December. As an added bonus, the Black Sticks Women were in camp here for a week prior to the Test matches and some of our Club were fortunate enough to play in warm up matches with and against the Black Sticks. The benefit of having that experience cannot be underestimated in terms of inspiring our young athletes. Additionally, the Black Sticks Men were here for a week in January and the women for a week in May where they played against our Under 18 Men side and a Central Selection. It was wonderful to see the Queensland Challenge occur again in 2012, and again it is great for our young Academy players to be pitted against the quality that Queensland can bring. A big thank you to Roger and Chris Greaney and the team at CCR for their continued and generous support of the Queensland Challenge. We hosted the National Under 15 Boys Championship Tournament in October and again there were thanks due to our administration team and our volunteers who give up their time to run the event. We continue to be well thought of by Hockey New Zealand in terms of our ability to run events, not only from a Junior level but right through to Test Matches. We were sad to host our last Under 11 Domestic Tournament. Some but not all of the Central Region teams came to the Tournament as Hockey New Zealand’s emphasis is now on a more participation level for Under 11’s, rather than an 11 aside competitive scenario. Under 11 age group hockey has given many of our players a taste of Representative hockey at an earlier level which has stood them in good stead as they have moved through the Representative ranks. It will leave a hole in our Tournament calendar which we are aiming to fill with 6-aside Festival type matches. Representative and Coaching It was wonderful to see Shea McAleese participating on the world stage at the London Olympics. Shea continues to represent Hawke’s Bay Hockey at the highest level on the world stage and we are very proud of him. Sam Greaney was picked as a Junior Black Stick and competed in Malaysia, as did Brennan Alexander, and more recently Rob Creffier. Congratulations to Brearna Wiig on her selection in the New Zealand Under 18 side. Oscar Stewart was named as a non travelling reserve in the Mens Tiger Turf team. Joe Hanks played for the Central Mavericks team in the 2012 NHL, and we were well represented in the Central Mystix team with Erin Weber, Lynda Coldicutt, Monica McAuley, Merinia Hibberd and Caryn Paewai. Following the Hawke’s Bay Senior Womens win in the Central Hockey League it was disappointing that we were not able to send a women’s team to the National Senior Tournament. Some of our players were picked up in the East Coast Central side which provided some benefit. The men managed to make the trip to Wellington and performed creditably. They finished a worthy second in the Central Hockey League. Highlights of the Representative age group performances were the Under 15 Boys side coached by Ro Hill, who did extremely well to finish 3rd, and the Collier Girls side coached by Deb Parkinson who finished 6th in Auckland. Our Under 11 sides also dominated and won the local Tournament that I referred to earlier. resigned in 2012 and I would like to record our thanks for his contributions over a number of years. The Board co-opted Phil Teague as a replacement and we have welcomed his input to the governance of your Association. The Board refreshed its strategic plan towards the end of 2012 with an increased emphasis on building our hockey community, strengthening our Clubs and coaches, as well as ensuring our financial sustainability. Volunteers I would like to thank all of the volunteers that make the playing and administration of hockey in our province possible. In particular, Joss and Daryl Prussing, Bob Morrison and Don Alexander, and all of the Umpires, Coaches, Managers and School Co-ordinators who give of their time so that hockey can be played and promoted in Hawke’s Bay. Thank you to you all. Umpiring I would like to thank our Umpires for all that they do for our sport. In particular, Allan Blewett, Stu Ashby and Andrew Knox have done a significant amount of work with and for our Umpires, and it is always pleasing to see how well our Umpires are regarded and ranked at National Tournaments. Concluding Remarks The Board and Staff continue to work hard to develop and promote hockey in Hawke’s Bay and enjoy doing so. We believe that Hawke’s Bay Hockey continues to remain at the forefront as a Regional Association in New Zealand and we look forward to a successful 2013, both on and off the field. Sponsors A huge thank you to the many sponsors of the Association. In particular, the various Community Trusts who support our administrative side and our Junior Rep sides and without whose support we would not be able to perform the functions that we can. In particular, the Infinity Foundation and the Endeavour Community Foundation gave us generous support in 2012. Iain Taylor Chairman, Board of Governors Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association Inc. The Third Turf The year’s events relating to the progress of a third and possibly fourth turf would be enough to fill a book following the Regional Council decision to allocate $2 million to hockey provided ourselves, the Artificial Surfaces Trust, Napier City Council and Hastings District Council and the Regional Sports Park Trust can agree on how those funds are to be utilised. We are working with those parties to move the Turf proposal forward. As you will have seen from the media, there is a general agreement amongst those parties that if an International Tournament can be secured for Hawke’s Bay then because of the benefit to the region as a whole, as well as hockey, then that is the preferred option. However, in the event that the international aspect is not able to proceed, then Hawke’s Bay Hockey has been working on developing a Plan B for how any available funds could be utilised for hockey facilities. The Board’s position is that a Water Turf at the Regional Sports Park short term followed by a Water Turf at Park Island is the most desirable result for our hockey community. There continue to be issues that arise as we work through this process. The Board is committed to ensuring a turf goes down as quickly as possible, as without it we are hamstrung in terms of developing the 11-aside game and we continue to run the risk of losing players as their expectations of hockey as their preferred sport are not being met due to the times that they are being asked to train or play. The Board of Governors I would like to thank all Board members for their contributions again in 2012. There has been a huge amount of work and the Board members as volunteers, give large amounts of their time willingly. Roger Greaney 2012 Strategic Plan Build the Hockey Community Drive growth in participation and attract and retain participation for life. Develop an exceptional high performance programme Win on the National Stage Present spectacular events Showcase Hockey that captivates the general public Commercialise Hockey Seek and grow alternative revenue streams Provide Strong leadership and organisation Implement a robust and capable HB Hockey structure to deliver a quality sport experience The Association 7 The Association Goodbye and Thank You Robyn Mactaggart S adly Robyn Mactaggart passed away on the 26th November 2012. Robyn has been involved with Hawke’s Bay Hockey for some time with her daughter playing representative hockey and she coached under 11 and under 13 teams to some good results. Robyn was a driving force behind the Hawke’s Bay Leaders Circle partnership with the New Zealand Black Sticks and has made a significant contribution to hockey in many ways. Hawke’s Bay Hockey will always be grateful for her contribution and commitment to the sport and the region. Viv Bicknell D ue to health reasons Viv has finished work as the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Administrator. Viv’s contribution to the Association has been huge over the 2 years she has been with us. She has developed efficient systems and processes that make for smooth running of the administration functions and the Rep season procedures. She has established strong relationships with our hockey community and is viewed as a valuable resource for our rep programme volunteer base. Despite having no association with the sport in past she has developed a real passion for Hockey. We will certainly miss her presence and contribution within Hockey in Hawke’s Bay. Ian Ebbet I n November, we were also saddened to hear of the passing of a long time Hawke’s Bay Hockey supporter Ian Ebbet. His contribution to Hockey, players, club administration and umpires over the years is commendable and we will always be grateful for his contribution to Hawke’s Bay Hockey. 8 Hawke’s Bay Hockey Annual Report 2012 A Word From The General Manager F rom the start 2012 was a full on year, a group of Hawke’s Bay Businesses entered into a sponsorship partnership with the Black Sticks men’s and women’s teams to support them during the build up to the Olympics. The 2012 programme began with the Black Sticks Men’s camp in January. The Women came in for their training camp in May and for both of these events, the Hawke’s Bay public responded well, attending training sessions and practice games. As a result, Hawke’s Bay Hockey has a special relationship and affiliation with the teams and their management which has been a very positive and fruitful experience for Hockey in the Bay. We were privileged to host the first two matches in the first home series for the women Vs India in December. The ActivePost Small Sticks programme was implemented including the small sticks in schools and the redesigned Junior Hockey game structure. This programme, together with the Black Sticks profile have been major factors in the growth in our winter playing numbers by 8 % and summer growth of 22%. Hawke’s Bay is significantly ahead of the national trends in terms of growth. Our winter programme included 78 primary school children participating in the new introductory Fun Sticks sessions. Teams participating were 64 Primary, 26 intermediate, 57 Secondary and 18 Club. This made for a very full programme with very little turf time available in the evenings and weekends for club and rep team practices. Of course as our participation numbers grow so does the pressure on turf time available with our two turfs. The prospect of a third turf based at the Regional Sports Park is exciting and certainly a must to enable the 11-a-side game to grow. The third turf will significantly relieve the pressure and ensure that we are better able to play games and hold practices at more socially acceptable times. The Academy has had another good year. Participation in our programmes has remained consistant. We had 5 current Black Sticks men work with the Academy Accelerator and Future Elite participants. Dean Couzins came in for one weekend and held training sessions with the Accelerator participants and the Hatch cup squad enjoyed some turf training time with him. We had good numbers for our rep trials across all age groups. Our teams achieved mixed results. The most significant achievements were a 3rd placing for the Under 15 Prem Boys, 2nd for Curtis, 1st for U11 boys and girls, and first for Masters Men 50+. was provided for our successful Elite Athletes and scholarships provided for Rep and Academy programme participation. A significant portion of these funds came through the various Gaming Trusts. We realigned our staffing structure again in 2012 to better match the resource needs across the Academy, Player development and community programmes. I am very grateful for the superb crew we have on the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Team including Viv Bicknell (Administrator), Matthew Witheford (Regional Development Manager), Mark Ramage (Reps and Academy Manager) and Neville Hocking (Groundsman/ Caretaker). I also want to acknowledge all the many volunteers who support Hockey as Coaches, Umpires, Rep team supporters, tournament support and the many other jobs that need doing. We are privileged to be well supported by our many sponsors and the Gaming Trusts. Without this support we would not be in a position to do much more than run competitions. These organisations are deserving of our acknowledgement when we boast about our achievements as a sport. Our year finished on a real high with the double header test series between the Black Sticks Women and India followed immediately by the Future Elite Academy Camp. Our achievements were many; our progress for the sport was great. Hockey is, in my view, a leader in Hawke’s Bay Sport. We most certainly live up to our Vision: “To create a regional centre of excellence that promotes and develops the sport of hockey in Hawke’s Bay, thereby setting the benchmark for other sporting codes.” Thank you for your support. Don Clark General Manager Our Hawke’s Bay players also did well reaching Regional and National teams. Eight players were selected for the Central under 21 Teams and six for NHL. Three of our Accelerator players, Tay Woods, Oscar Stewart and Brearna Wiig, were selected for the National under 18 Tiger Turf squad with Brearna making the selection for the team to play a series against the USA in January. Neil Edmundson, Phil Teague and Malcolm Sutherland were selected for the NZ Mens 50+ and 45+ Teams which competed in the inaugural Masters World Cup in Canterbury, England. Neil was Captain of the 50+ Team. Malcolm captained the 45+ Team who ended up coming 4th. A number of our former Academy players also made the national under 21 Team. These include Sam Greaney, Brennan Alexander and Robert Creffier. We continue to be proud of the achievements of our top athletes and we are grateful that we can provide them with some financial assistance. A total of $20,000 L-R: Don Clark, Keri Gardiner, Mark Ramage, Viv Bicknell, Matthew Witheford Absent: Neville Hocking The Association 9 The Association Academy and Representative Manager T his year was a big year for Hawke’s Bay Hockey’s Academy. We continued to run the popular programmes and camps and added some new ones. Accelerator The Accelerator Programme continued this year and was another huge success. We had three selected for the New Zealand U.18 Tiger Turf Squads; Oscar Stewart, Taylor Wood and Brearna Wiig making the test series against the USA. Joe Hanks also made the Central NHL side. The Accelerator Squad have all achieved selections into Hawke’s Bay Hockey and Central representative sides. Many of this squad were appointed to leadership roles at their respective schools. This a clear sign that they have what it takes to be above the rest, proving their selection into the Accelerator programme. Hawke’s Bay Hockey would like to congratulate these players on their appointment: R. Hughes, B. Taylor, B. Watson, O. Stewart, K. Macdonald, B. Wiig Davmet A+ We had 36 kids participate in our annual DAVMET A+ preseason five week programme. This is a pre-season training programme designed and coached by myself and aimed at preparing players for the oncoming rep programmes. The programme involved splitting the squad into two turf based training groups run on different days then joining together for instructor based Gym sessions at City Fitness which was enjoyed by all and raised fitness and skill levels ready for the season ahead. I would like to thank Davmet NZ Limited for their continued support of this programme. Fantasticks Hawke’s Bay Hockey’s April school holiday Hockey FanTASTICKS three day U.13 camp was again a big success. The 51 kids who attended thoroughly enjoyed being put through their paces, learning new skills and improving technical issues with Caryn Paewai as head coach. We also had 41 registered for the July Hockey FanTASTICKS Camp, again with Caryn Paewai as head coach. We introduced a new three day coaching clinic held at Hereworth School which was again developed by myself and assisted by two of our Accelerator programme participants. We will continue with similar events next year. Future Elites The annual Future Elite programme held in December was another great success with over 30 Representative players from around New Zealand taking part in the four day camp coached by Shea McAleese and assisted by current Black stick players: Nick Wilson, Phil Burrows and Richard Petherick. This is a “fantastic” programme with many players returning year after year, one girl from Northland has just completed her fourth year at the camp, she was one of four last year selected for the New Zealand U.18 squad that went to the programme. 10 Hawke’s Bay Hockey Annual Report 2012 CCR Queensland Challenge Hawke’s Bay welcomed our visitors from across the ditch and both teams put on an exciting spectacle for the home crowd .The overall event was won by HBH with the Boys winning both their matches and the girls winning their first and drawing the last. Thanks goes to CCR panel beating and Roger Greaney for their continued support of this event and Hawke’s Bay Hockey. T he 2012 Representative season was a year of ups and downs. To start off we hosted the Rush Munro’s Invitational U.11 Tournament in July with teams from Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua, Taupo, Poverty Bay and Horowhenua attending. Hawke’s Bay cleaned up both the boys and girls events. This was unfortunately the final tournament in this 11-a-side format and we will look at hosting a U.11 six-a-side festival event in the future under the new Hockey NZ rules for this age group. The U.15 Boys Premier team had an excellent result in earning a third place medal at National Tournament for the first time in Hawke’s Bay Hockey’s history for that age group. The Senior teams, both Men and Women, did themselves proud in making the CHL finals held here in Napier, the Women beating Manawatu to take the No.1 spot and the Men coming second behind Manawatu. Over all our Representative teams all did very well, a lot of hard work was put in both on and off the field, with early morning starts and various long trips away. As always I would like to say a huge thank you to our many coaches, managers, parents, supporters and sponsors who kindly give up so much of their time and money for their continued support of Hawke’s Bay Hockey’s Representative Teams. Mark Ramage Academy and Representative Manager Regional Development Manager I n 2012 we saw a big push in all development areas with a large emphasis on junior hockey. ActivePost coming on board with the Small Stick programme provided more direction from Hockey NZ with the nationally branded programme. We will hope to see the benefits of ActivePost Small Sticks over the next few years in greater numbers playing the game and with a higher skill level. ActivePost Small Sticks 2012 is year one of a three year plan to align with the Hockey New Zealand junior programme. In the first year we introduced the new Small Sticks names and introduced the new year 1&2 programme Fun Sticks. Fun Sticks is a participation based development programme for the beginner player. The programme is 40mins of small games based around the fundamental skills of hockey finishing with 4-a-side modified hockey on modified fields. • Fun Sticks - for Year 1 and 2 (under 6) • Mini Sticks - for Year 3 and 4 (under 9 starting on 1/8 field) • Kiwi Sticks - for Year 5 and 6 (under 11) • Kwik Sticks - full field 11-a-side hockey The key to the Small Sticks programme is getting year 1-8 hockey players playing hockey on the appropriate size field for their age and in smaller teams where they can enjoy greater game time and more involvement. The uptake on the new programme Fun Sticks was very good in it’s first year with 30 children taking part at Hawke’s Bay Hockey Stadium and 40 children taking part in the programme run at Hasting Girls High School. Having the two venues allowed for parents to choose the location that suited them best on a Saturday morning when most parents have to juggle junior sport. The programme was run by recognized Hawke’s Bay Hockey coaches and assisted by some of Hawke’s Bay’s U.18 rep players. The quality of the coaches ensured the quality of the sessions run. It is great to see the future of Hawke’s Bay hockey getting coached in an accurate and comprehensive way. The new rules for Small Sticks redefining the size of the teams has increased the number of teams in our junior competitions. This has certainly increased the quality of the individuals in the teams because players can no longer hide on the field like players could in teams with more players. It provides a better coach player ratio with an average of 8 players per team, ensuring the players get the best opportunities to develop in the sport. It has however stretched the venues we use to capacity forcing us to find more suitable venues to run our Small Sticks hockey. Most schools have now gained extra teams in this process and we now need more coaches, umpires, venues etc. This I see as a good problem and we are providing appropriate training where required. ActivePost Small Sticks in School We kicked off the ActivePost Small Sticks in Schools midway through last year with an initial uptake of three schools. The feedback was outstanding! Small Sticks in schools is a nationally branded programme designed to attract children aged 4-13 to hockey. Small Sticks allows children to play hockey at a level suited to their ability in their school. The programme also equips teachers with hockey games that they can deliver during class P.E sessions providing children with ongoing exposure to the game. In our first half-year we visited three schools and over 800 children. The schools were: • Te Mata Primary, • St Mary’s Catholic School • Sherenden and Districts School 5% of those who attended a Small Sticks in School programme have then come along to a programme based at Hawke’s Bay Hockey, either Fun Sticks or the FanTASTICKS Holiday programme. Summer Hockey This year we put more emphasis onto our summer hockey programme with the introduction of more school age competitions and a development programme based on the Fun Sticks material for new and beginner hockey players. The summer hockey competition was: Thursday: Super six, Social Six Friday: Business/Social Wednesday: Youth League, Summer small Sticks, Summer Small Sticks Development The registration numbers blew us away with over 60 kids registering for the development programme requiring us to have 8 coaches. Summer hockey has been well received this year with more teams and players than ever before. The split of serious and social on the club night has been well received especially by the more social player who was getting sick of playing against the serious ones, and the serious ones wanting tougher games. The Super Six grade is now into its second season and becoming the competition for our most competitive hockey players to be involved in. The competition is slick, fast and our most attractive hockey to watch during summer. Social six has seen a growth spurt also and a good fitness level for our club players. Friday night hockey has shifted towards a good family night out. So far this year we have had 75 teams involved in summer hockey across all grades and 65 children involved in Summer Small Sticks Development. I eagerly look forward to hopefully a busy and successful 2013. Matthew Witheford Regional Development Manager The Association 11 Special Events 12 Black Sticks Hawke’s Bay Hockey Annual Report 2012 CCR Annual Queensland Challenge A fter a break in 2011 it was great to have the Queensland Secondary Teams back in the Bay to face our Academy Teams. The CCR Queensland Challenge is a key event in the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Calendar providing an opportunity for the community to enjoy top class age group hockey. This year we were especially glad to showcase this event over two nights. We would like to express thanks to, principle sponsor, City Collision Repairs and to others who provided support for this event; Bluewater Hotel, Kookaburra and the Radio Network. We are already planning and looking forward to Next Year’s Challenge.
