read What Our
As a freshman, It was motivating to see the
dedication of the seniors & their competitive
attitude on the field in marching band. It has
been nice to get closer to upperclassmen & having
friends in high places.
–Lindsay Lehman, sophomore french horn
(soccer, volleyball, choir, ASA, key club, Latin club
& FCA)
Students
Have To Say
The upperclassmen have been nothing but nice
to me. They drive me places and even let me chill
with them sometimes. I feel really cool when an
upperclassmen waves to me in the hall. It’s super
worth sticking to it.
–Rachel Fernandez, sophomore alto and tenor sax
(theatre arts, theatre club and jazz band)
My motivating factor is to make the all-city/allregion bands. As a freshman, you will get a lot of
recognition if you make the higher bands. If you
want to be the best you can be, then practice hard.
–Daniel Dickey, sophomore French Horn
(golf, baseball, marching band, all-city, all-region
& all-state)
In band, everyone really works together and gets
along. Going into high school, I was very skeptical,
but now I can’t picture myself without music. I
made tons of new friends through band and have
never regretted it. I would suggest at least trying
band your freshman year.
–Tori Varnes, junior clarinet
(track, cross country, student council, key club,
Spanish national honor society, Spanish club, & IB)
I just remember how fun UIL was and how all the
upperclassmen respected me. I made a lot of new
friends this year. The band hall is always open. It’s
like our little “home” that only band people have.
–April Seaman, sophomore clarinet
(theatre arts, swimming, pre-AP)

LAMAR VIKING BAND 2012
Famous
People in Band
A lot of our first year band students wonder if participation in band means that
they will be unable to apply themselves in other school activities. Most band
members are multitalented and have many interests. The skills students develop
in band (teamwork, group accountability, perseverance, discipline, cooperation
etc.) will be great assets in other endeavors. In fact, many great athletes, actors,
musicians, business leaders and Presidents were in school band!

read What Our
Middle school and high school students who
participated in instrumental music scored
significantly higher than their non-band
peers in standardized tests. University
studies conducted in Georgia and Texas
found significant correlations between the
number of years of instrumental music
instruction and academic achievement in
math, science and language arts.

Have To Say
Source: University of Sarasota Study, Jeffrey Lynn Kluball;
East Texas State University Study, Daryl Erick Trent
Should my child learn to play
an instrument?
The standard answer to this question is an
unqualified yes, most children should learn to play
a musical instrument. Children learn discipline
from the rehearsal process, self-expression from
performance and social interaction from group
studies. A child can definitely benefit from
learning a musical instrument at an early age,
since many professional musicians credit their
early experiences with developing a life-long
passion for music. Even if a child discovers other
interests later in life, the discipline required to
maintain and play a musical instrument could
prove useful in other situations.
‘I want to be in band, but is
marching band hard?
Marching is like learning an instrument. You
learn it in small steps. Freshman camps, sectionals,
and upperclassmen are utilized to teach marching
fundamentals at an easy, slow pace.
I want to be in athletics or
cheerleading. Can I?
The great thing about Lamar HS is that students
3
are able to be involved in band and athletics.
The Viking Band has students participating in all
aspects of the athletic department. To facilitate
conflicts, student band members may earn an
alternate or reserve spot.
How much time does band take?
Summer band will be kept to a minimum.
The two main important dates are the week
of July 4 and the first three weeks of August.
During the school week, students rehearse
on 4 afternoon or early evenings. The yearly
schedule is given out in May so students can
make advance plans. The marching band
performs at all football games, pep rallies,
and approximately 4 contests a season. Our
website (www.lamarmusic.org) is updated
weekly with a weekly schedule.
Can I be in band and take
Advance Placement Courses?
Most of the Viking Band Students are on
advanced degree plans. Numerous students
are in AP and Honor classes. See our “4 year
plan for double blocking plan” to select the
degree plan that is right for you. Students
interested in participating in International
Baccalaureate should speak with a director
about scheduling options.
Does it cost a lot of money to
be in the band?
One student fee is paid in the fall. Financial
arrangements can be made with the
directors. The student fee is announced in
the spring and summer newsletter so that
students can prepare over the summer. An
optional cost is the annual Spring Band Trip.
Percussion and Colorguard are responsible
for additional fees.
Band vs. Other Activities
The band directors acknowledge the
commitment it takes for a
program, such as band, and recognize the skills
and discipline necessary for its success. To
continue the traditions of the Viking band, we
must recognize our responsibility to all aspects:
marching, concert, academics, athletics, etc.
Conflicts should be avoided, but alternate status
may be given to those who cannot work around
football, cheerleading, or similar school conflicts.
LAMAR VIKING BAND 2012
We invite you to continue developing your musical abilities, mental abilities,
leadership skills, and other talents as a member of the “Pride of Lamar”
Viking Band! All students need to select band as their FIRST elective
choice. Please consult the “4 year plan for double blocking band” to see how
you can accomplish the diploma that is appropriate for you.

Interesting FACTS that parents should know!
Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs).
—Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Report. Reported in Houston Chronicle, January 1998
The College Board identifies the arts as one of the six basic academic subject areas students should study in order to succeed in college.
—Academic Preparation for College: What Students Need to Know and Be Able to Do, 1983 [still in use], The College Board, New York
“The musician is constantly adjusting decisions on tempo, tone, style, rhythm, phrasing, and feeling—training the brain to become incredibly good at
organizing and conducting numerous activities at once. Dedicated practice of this orchestration can have a great payoff for lifelong additional skills,
intelligence, and an ability for self-knowledge and expression.”
—Ratey John J., MD. A User’s Guide to the Brain. New York: Pantheon Books, 2001.
“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them—a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human
involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.”
—Gerald Ford, former President, United States of America
