Teen With Spinal Cord
Injury Keeps Believing
Michelle and her family packed up their belongings
and said their goodbyes to family after a week-long
vacation in California. They prepared themselves
for a long drive home to Des Moines, but that drive
was cut short when they were involved in a serious
motor vehicle crash.
Just hours before, Michelle ran through
endless grape fields with her cousin.
Now she lay pinned in her family’s
vehicle—barely conscious.
“I kept blacking out and then
coming back,” Michelle says.
“I first remember a woman
stopping at our van asking
my sister if anyone needed
help. My sister said I needed
help immediately.”

Day Health
The Perfect Transition for Kendall
Kendall, age 2, went to childcare while her parents were at work,
but the room was a little overwhelming for her. Her parents, Steven
and Ashley, looked into ChildServe’s Day Health program to meet
Kendall’s specific needs.
The only one of its kind in Iowa, ChildServe’s Day Health program offers
integrated therapy, nursing, early intervention and skill development for
children with special health care needs. After much success, the program
that began at ChildServe Woodland Center has now expanded to include
ChildServe Center – Ames.
“After just a few months in the program, Kendall was at ease and
comfortable,” Ashley says. “Her transition has been very easy and the
program started in Ames at a perfect time for us.”
At Day Health, Kendall receives her speech, occupational and physical
therapy during the day and is already beginning to reach milestones her
parents didn’t think were possible in such a short about of time.
“Each child has goals that we work on daily,” explains supervisor Emily
Hofer. “Kendall needed to work on physical transitions like sitting to
standing and mimicking simple words from staff members.”
After children finish a therapy session, therapists show other Day
Health staff ways to integrate the therapy. Before Kendall goes home,
Day Health staff talk with Ashley and Steven about her day and
give them ideas for activities to do at home.
“Kendall is sitting up on her own, climbing up on furniture,
walking and running around, and eating food,” Ashley says.
“It’s amazing and a huge difference from what she used to do.
We’re blessed to have this program as an option.”
