atlantic
coast
the largest biome along the extensive brazilian coastline
is the atlantic Rainforest. However, due to the importance of the marine environment, we present the atlantic
coast separately. the sea is an important source of food
and employment in brazil, especially for the traditional
communities living along the brazilian coastline, whose
lifestyle is completely associated with the sea. With a
population of more than 70 million people living along
the brazilian coastline, it is clear that we are talking about
one of the most threatened ecosystems in the country.
along the extent of the brazilian coastline (8500 km), it
is possible to see many different ecosystems: beaches,
islands, mangroves, salt marshes, dunes, rocky shores,
bays, marshes and coral reefs, among others. this is due
primarily to differences in climate, geology and soils of
the region. some call it the “blue amazon”.
the coastal zone performs an important function in
connecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems. because
of this, the zone is a complex, diversified, and strategic
environment in the conservation of natural resources. a
large availability of nutrients, favorable conditions for
shelter, and the temperature make it the perfect place
for the reproduction of fish, birds, crustaceans, mollusks,
and marine animals.
compose this very special ecosystem. It is very large and is not
accessible by road. To experience it, you must face the dunes
and the elevated temperatures, always in the company of a local guide. Short journeys can be done on foot. The strong heat
is compensated by the refreshing crystal clear ponds and the
deserted beaches.
The entrance to Lençóis is the town of Barreirinhas. From this
small town, visitors begin speed boat rides up Preguiças River,
with its mangroves, and hikes on the dunes and beaches. There
among the seven species of sea turtles in the world, five
are found in brazilian waters, seeking beaches and oceanic islands for nesting, shelter, feeding and growth. the
five species are threatened with extinction, according to
amar Project, which has promoted sea turtles’ pro

LENÇOIS MARANHENSES
Lençóis Maranhenses comprises a fantastic sequence of sand
dunes extending 62 miles/100 km along the coast in Maranhão
and 18miles/30 km towards the backlands, creating a unique
surreal landscape. This formation provides impressive views
comprised of countless lakes with blue and green water that,
during the rainy season, contrast with the white sand of the
dunes, which can reach 40m in height.
The entire area belongs to the Lençóis Maranhenses National
Park, created in 1981 to protect 155 thousand hectares that
are two oases inside the Park, the Queimada dos Britos and the
Baixa Grande inhabited by a small population of nomadic people who make a living by fishing. These oases are surrounded
by large mangroves along their banks. Crabs and sea turtles can
be seen along the beaches. The ponds are visited by migratory
birds, such as the ruddy turnstone and the blue-winged duck
that stop there to rest and feed.

this hotel. a great option for those who want to stay close to the

to take that great afternoon nap. the friendly staff and upscale
dining are also worth highlighting.

Vila Kalango
Jericoacoara is an ecological paradise located in an area of environmental preservation (APA). This small fishing village in the
state of Ceará (300 km west from Fortaleza.) has about 10,000
inhabitants and maintains a rustic feel. Until 1985 it was only
a small fisherman’s area, lost between huge dunes. Today, it is
considered one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world.
The sandy streets and absence of streetlights are contrasted
with the lively nightlife and tourism infrastructure. There are no
paved roads on the last 15 km stretch, since the construction of
roads inside APAs is forbidden by law. A 4x4 vehicle is therefore
necessary to reach the beaches. The long coastline of beaches,
dunes, clear freshwater lakes and warm natural pools make for
a perfect setting.
situated on the water front
and surrounded by palm
trees, lush tropical vegetation,
and beautiful sand dunes, the
Pousada Vila Kalango features
24 guest rooms constructed
entirely from natural material
and vaulted onto stilts. guests
can enjoy the beautiful surroundings while relaxing in hammocks on the room’s private decks.
Vila Kalango has a great commitment to the environment. all
collaborators are locals, and the inn uses local goods whenever
possible. in addition, the restaurant uses vegetables grown in
their own garden and all the rubbish is recycled.
best time to go: all year round, but from July to January is
better for wind and kitesurfers.
combining touRs: a visit to lençois maranhenses completes the “emotion Route” tour.
FERNANDO DE NORONHA
was totally renovated a few years ago and will soon consist of
more than one station. Sewage is treated entirely on the island,
and trash is disposed of on the mainland.
This island under the administration of the Pernambuco State
government is like a piece of paradise in Brazil. The all-yearround greenish blue color of the ocean takes the breath away
of every single visitor to this island. Fernando de Noronha was
transformed into the National Park and Environmental Protection Area in the ‘80s and since then, the natural setting of the
island has remained practically untouched. Access can only be
done by a plane departing from Recife or Natal.
Fernando de Noronha is without a doubt one of the best “sea
destinations” offered in Brazil. A paradise for surfers and divers, you can surf great waves during the summer (from December to February). In the other months, calm and crystal waters
attract a great amount of people interested in diving and snorkeling. Dolphins are the big stars, turtles are often seen, and
the fishes are various and colorful.
The island is a rustic destination; you’re not going to find resorts with huge infrastructure, but instead small guesthouses,
some more comfortable than others. The large majority of
these consist of home-style guesthouses, as there is also not

all rooms feature a flat screen tV, a mini-bar, a hydro-massage
bathtub, and solar heated water. From the elegant amenities
to the year-round sun shining on this tropical paradise, guests
will be completely satisfied. the inn also has a swimming pool

problems walking on the trails and beaches.
For those who think that everything on the island is expensive,
it is important to remember that the island is very far away from
the mainland (300km), and it is not self-sufficient. Practically
everything arrives from the mainland by either boat or plane,
which raises the prices of guesthouses and restaurants. The water supply is provided by a seawater desalination station, which

jungle. the inn represents an
outstanding and ecologically-
sound project, built with minimal soil interface and the use of
ecologically sound reforested wood. operations are based on
the concept of “conscious consumption” avoiding any unnecessary waste of energy or water. electricity, water and drainage
systems are all well-suited to treat nature correctly and respectfully.
best time to go: You can visit at any time, even during the
rainy period (June to september) since the rain usually does not
last all day but instead occurs throughout the day, which allows
you to cool down a bit from the intense sun. the best season
for surfers is between december and February. For divers, it is
between from march to november.
combining touRs: natal and Rio de Janeiro. it is also possible to visit olinda, in Pernambuco, while waiting for the flight
to Fernando de noronha. sometimes this can be a long wait, so
a half day tour is a real possibility!

integrated into the lush nature and unspoilt paradise
setting of Praia do Rosa. due to its prime location surrounded
by beach, pond, waterfall, slopes and hills covered by native
vegetation, guests and visitors have the opportunity to appreciate and participate in many tours: guided bird watching, whale
watching, horseback riding, snorkeling, hiking and many others.
best time to go: between July and november to see the

Remember: sun block, shades, mosquito

Rosa is known as the best place in Brazil for whale watching.
Every year, between July and November, dozens of right whales
come to the Santa Catarina coast to procreate and feed their babies, escaping from the extreme arctic winter. Recognized as the
National Capital of the Right Whale, Imbituba is a veritable nursery for these cetaceans that can reach 60 tons, providing a spectacle that can be enjoyed onboard of special boats, equipped for
this activity or simply watch them from the beach. Attention: the
rides may be canceled due to weather conditions and tide, so
checking the tour reservation before is recommended.

atlantic
rainforest
the atlantic rainforest is one of today’s most threatened
ecosystems on earth, with only 7% remaining of its original extension that once reached over 1.290.000 km2
(15%) of the brazilian territory. Despite serious devastation, it still shelters a significant part of brazil’s biological
diversity, exhibiting high levels of endemism. most of this
remaining percentage is located in serra do mar, within
the states of Paraná; rio de Janeiro; são Paulo and santa
catarina. curiously, it has many names, depending on
each state. it can be called serra dos Órgãos or bocaina
in rio de Janeiro, serra do itajaí or serra do tabuleiro in
santa catarina or even Juréia in são Paulo.
this biome is considered by the world-wide scientific
community as one of the world’s richest combined ecosystems in animal and plant diversity and as the second
most threatened with extinction. because of this fact, in
1991 Unesco elevated the atlantic rainforest to the
category of biosphere reserve, being today one of the
three major conservation priorities in the world.
there is a great necessity from public policies to preserve
the atlantic rainforest. in addition to the brutal reduction
of its original expanse, the amount of species threatened
by extinction is huge: of the 200 total brazilian plant
species currently threatened, 117 are in this biome. according to data from the brazilian environment institute
and natural renewable resources (ibama), the atlantic
rainforest shelters 383 of the 633 species threatened by
extinction in brazil.
the fauna is made up of various distinct species, many
of which are endemic, or that is to say, they are only
found in the atlantic rainforest. between these species
are jaguar, ant-eater, deer, giant otter, tapir, agouti, sloth,
south american possum, and black-fronted Piping Guan
among many others.
its vegetation is extremely diversified and is marked by
peroba (a species of giant tree), ipê, glory bushes, cedar, rose apple, brazilian copal, jacaranda, and Pau brasil
among others. the last two of which (jacaranda and Pau
brasil) are the main targets for logging, a fact that has
reduced the trees to almost extinction.
Within the atlantic rainforest biome, we have selected
some must-see attractions, as follows:
RIO DE JANEIRO
Often, guests who come to Rio de Janeiro know they are in a
city with stunning natural beauty, but end up restricting visits only to the famous and beautiful beaches, whether it be
for lack of time or just for not knowing that several wonderful
options for ecotourism are also available. The Botanic Garden,
Tijuca Forest, Ilha Grande and Paraty are some of our suggestions for those who want to know more than Ipanema and
Copacabana when in Rio.
botanic GarDen
rio de Janeiro’s botanic Garden is one of the ten most important ecological sanctuaries
in the entire world. the Garden, founded by Dom João
Vi in 1808 as an acclimation
Garden for exotic plants, was
transformed over nearly two
centuries into the research
institute of the botanic Garden of rio de Janeiro. although the
collection is composed mainly of brazilian species, there are
also foreign plants and hybrids. the 140-hectare park lies at the
foot of the corcovado mountain and contains more than 6,000
different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees,
including 900 varieties of palm trees. a 750 m line of 134 palms
leads from the entrance to the gardens, forming the avenue of
royal Palms. these palms are all descended from a single tree,
the Palma mater, long since destroyed by lightning. Visitors can
stroll along the pathways of the park to the sounds of native
birds like the “curios” and the “sabiás.” the exuberance of na-
ture in all its colors and glory provide images that visitors will
keep in their memories and souls forever.
tiJUca forest
Known as the largest urban
forest in the world, tijuca
forest is a case of pride and
success. after many years of
intensive deforestation (especially due to coffee plantations), it began to be replanted by man in the nineteenth
century. over the first 13
years more than 100 thousand native species of seedlings were
planted. afterwards, the reforestation was carried on, allowing
for the transformation of the forest into a public park for recreation. nowadays, with about 3200 hectares, it merges hundreds
of species of fauna and flora found only in atlantic rainforest.
there are over 30 flagged tracks that lead visitors to their peaks,
waterfalls, caves and lookouts.

From May to September it is possible to swim between the dolphins. As it only opened up to tourism in 1994 (it was a penal
colony before), the islands development has been limited and
it retains much of its charm. Crystal-clear green waters lap at
palm-fringed beaches on the north side of the island, sweeping white-sand beaches (including Praia Lopes Mendes, which
is claimed to be one of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches) and
rougher seas characterize the south side.
In order to best take advantage of a visit to this paradise, it’s

are still in a primary state, which means it hasn’t suffered significant changes by the hands of man; therefore, it is totally preserved and the quality of its fauna and flora is extremely rich.
It is the only example of the establishment and maintenance
of a forest reserve in the region of Guaraqueçaba promoted
by individuals. Therefore, its development is also a challenge
of proof of what has become a paradigm of conservation: the
possibility of self sustainability as a source of resources and the
development of low-impact activities such as ecotourism and
forest management, without the input of external resources.

delimiting the southwestern border of the reserve and receiving affluent from the left edge deriving from the interior of
the area. The other streams in the reserve receive the following
denominations: River of the Four Falls, River of the White Clay,
Old River and River of the Pipe.
Most of these water courses originate in the hillsides of the
mountains and are characterized by rocky stream beds and
pebbles. In the rivers formed in plain areas and in the lower
portions of the other rivers, the bed is made up of fine sedi
sediments such as sand and clay.

the shelter was built with local fallen wood and the stay includes rooms with bunk beds and bathrooms (with hot water

and communication is done by VHf radio.
best time to Go: all year round - dry winter (may-sep) with
medium-low temperatures and wet summer (Dec-mar) with
comfortable summer days. Visiting the region during the winter
is a better choice for walks and animals spotting. if your goal is
to see more birds, spring time is the right season. to enjoy the
waterfalls and boat trips, summer is a better option.

pleasant place to be and relax, since cars are not allowed. Visiting iguassu falls is also a great option.

Pantanal
With its 250.000km2 the Pantanal biome has been considered the largest plain of continuous flood on the planet, accounting for less than 2% of the brazilian territory.
Due to its proximity to the amazon biome, the Pantanal
offers an outstanding biodiversity and, in 2000, it was
designated both as a biosphere reserve and as the Pantanal Conservation Complex, which includes the Pantanal
matogrossense national Park, listed as a World Heritage
Site by Unesco.
the region is known for its wonderful population of wild
animals, harboring extremely diverse species of birds,
guara-wolves, alligators, capybaras and many others. it
is certainly the best place in brazil to observe wildlife.
the landscape in Pantanal completely changes with the
season - the periods of flood and drought - providing different experiences during each period.
Dry Season (from may to September): the large fields are
covered mainly by grasses and savannah vegetation, the
surface water becomes scarce, restricted to the perennial rivers with defined riverbeds, large lakes near these
rivers, and some smaller lagoons in lowest areas in the
plains. this is the best season to spot animals, during
which time they leave the dense vegetation to open areas in search of water.
Wet Season: the first rains of the wet season fall down
on a dry and porous soil and are easily absorbed. With
the constant wetting of the soil, the plain quickly becomes green due to the regeneration of many species
resistant to drought during the previous months. in a period of a few days, the soil drenches and cannot absorb
any more rainwater. Soon, the water starts filling small
ponds, lagoons and overflowing the shallower beds,
forming courses with varying location and volume. this
large periodic increase in water gives the region an appearance of immense inland sea. only the higher ground
and the isolated hills stand out as true islands covered
with vegetation, where many animals take refuge in
search of shelter from the rising waters.
although it covers more than 10 different areas, the Pantanal is commonly divided into two different regions for
tourism: Pantanal South, in the State of mato grosso do
Sul, (whose main airport is in Campo grande) and Pantanal north, in the State of mato grosso (whose main
airport is in Cuiabá). the distances between the lodges in
Pantanal north and the airport are covered between 3-4
hours. in the South a 4 to 6 hour drive from the airport to
the lodges is necessary.
Within the Pantanal biome, we have selected the best
products available
PANTANAL SOUTH
This area is a massive nature reserve of around 140,000 square
kilometers in Mato Grosso do Sul state. It is largely composed
of swamp terrain and contains an abundance of wildlife. The
region is home to about 650 species of birds, 240 species of
fish, 50 species of reptiles and 80 species of mammals. Some
of the animals found in Pantanal are marsh deer, giant otter,
jabirus stork and the endangered jaguar. Horseback riding is
the major transportation used by locals, and is a popular tourist
activity.

Campo grande or by a 6 hour drive in a 4x4 vehicle, also from
Campo grande.
Founded in the beginning of the twentieth century, the barranco
alto Farm is considered one of the oldest in this region and still
preserves old farming habits. the lodge is small (four rooms each
with a private veranda), so each guest is provided personalized
service. all tours are accompanied by either the owner, lucas
leuzinger (who has a masters in biology), or his wife marina
(who has a master’s in agronomy), together with local Pantanal
guides. the programs and activities can be adapted to suit the
particular desires of each guest.
the owner has counted 407 bird species in the area; hyacinth
macaws are common, as are trogons, jacamars, toucans, raptors,
and many other species. there are also several mammal species;
the property spreads along 15km (9 miles) of the Rio negro,
providing an excellent habitat for capybara, tapirs, anteaters,
marsh deer and giant otters. Jaguars are also spotted frequently
by the river (but no guarantees).
Some other possible programs in the farm include observing
animals and plants with a biologist, photo safari, exploring the
Rio negro by silent boats and kayaks, day and night horseback
riding, animal spotting by night with searchlights, river exploration and swimming, piranha fishing, workshops in regional traditions such as preparing “carne do sol”, leather working and

cerrado
The second largest of brazil’s major biomes, the cerrado
could be called the South american equivalent to the african savannah, spreading over an area of 200 million
hectares and accounting for 25% of the country’s land,
the size of the Western europe.
Within the region, it is estimated that there are 10,000
species of plants, more than 800 bird species and 160
mammal species, of which 45% are endemic. a surprising biodiversity finds shelter among plant species well
adapted to drought, scattered shrubs and grassland
with scattered tress. The cerrado is considered the richest savannah in the world because of the high plant diversity and endemism. This biodiversity is guaranteed by
the presence of the three largest hydrographic basins in
South america: amazon, Sao Francisco and Prata.
Two well-defined seasons are important features of the
cerrado: dry winter (from may to September) and rainy
summer (from october to march). Winds are not common, except in august, when some gales can occur.
Within the cerrado biome, we have selected some mustsee attractions, as follows:
JALAPÃO
Jalapão is a widely contrasted region located in the heartland of
Brazil, in the State of Tocantins. Tablelands, dunes, rivers, lakes
and waterfalls are part of this unique scenery that challenges
the spirit of many adventure seekers. The Jalapão State Park
is an isolated region, located 200km from Palmas (capital of
Tocantins State), with wild vegetation and very little infrastructure. The region is a transition area between the “caatinga”
(a dry, stunted brushwood area) and the “cerrado” (a woodsy
pasture), the Brazilian Savannah.
The region is often called the “Jalapão Desert” but it is, in fact,
a great oasis full of beautiful waterfalls and springs, in addition to having a great variety of flora and fauna found in the
Cerrado.
The rapids of Rio Novo are classified as level 3 and are ideal for
practicing adventure tourism with a high safety margin. In three
experience, enabling a complete interaction with nature and
wildlife. The activities are many: trekking, canoeing, hiking, photographic safaris, sunset and moonrise on the dunes, evenings
around a cozy bonfire. all the trips are for small groups, reducing the environmental impact and offering an exclusive service
to guests.
Korubo embraces practices that comply with Sustainable Tourism. The structure does not use brickwork constructions; the
architecture is fully integrated with the scenery. alternative
sources of energy are used, as well communal chemical toilets
and a tent restaurant, all very rustic but perfectly in tune with
the environment. one of the highlights is the high quality and
diversity of meals.
beST Time To Go: no specific time, good all year round.

for those with a more adventurous spirit.
The camp offers travelers

Spectacular scenery of imposing canyons and plateaus, flowing
grasslands and forested valleys, extensive cave systems, plentiful waterfalls and deep swimming pools in the heart of the
State of Bahia. Most of the attractions are protected by the
Chapada Diamantina National Park, founded in 1985, and encompassing 1,520 km² today.
Throughout a geological history spanning more than 1.5 billion years, the area has been a river delta, a shallow sea with
floating icebergs and a desert with shifting sand dunes. Rock
art attests to a pre-historic occupation of the area. Once a gold
and diamond mining region, it has a unique history and culture.
The area is still sparsely populated, and the people are very hospitable.
The mountainous region is home to an extraordinary variety of
ecosystems such as the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Rupestral fields
and Caatinga. Famed for its rich flora and endemic birds, it is
also a special place for botanists and birdwatchers. There bromeliads and orchids find a privileged environment and adapt
to the differences in climate, altitude and soil. The mountains
that rise to 1700 meters in altitude provide sustenance to Spotted Leopard-Cats, Jaguars, Guinea Pigs, Deer, Tegu Lizards and
Seriemas.
The Park is also one of Brazil’s top hiking destinations. It is a
wonderful backdrop to a wide range of other outdoor activities
like mountain biking, swimming, rafting, caving, horse riding,
rappel or just plain getting away from it all. Lençois, the gateway, is easily reached by air (1 hour of flight) or road (6 hours
by car) from Salvador.
We recommend visiting:
From the City of Lençóis – Poço do Diabo , Pratinha Cave, Fumaça Water fall, Serrano Tour, Pai Inácio Hill, Sossego Water
fall, Paty Valley (trekking circuit).
canto das Águas is known as the first Sustainable hotel in brazil (certificated by abnT - brazilian association for Technical
norms). The actions responsible for this esteemed recognition,
include the use of solar energy to heat the water, a true dedication to waste recycling, the prioritization of contracting local
workers and the exclusive use of reforested wood in the hotel
structure. The hotel joins comfort and leisure with environmental projects and regional social development.
all the hotel’s rooms feature balconies overlooking the river,
lcd TVs with cable, air conditioning, a telephone, WiFi internet
access, a mini-bar, and a personal safe. Guests may enjoy the
hotel’s onsite restaurant which serves regional and international
cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
beST Time To Go: anytime, but the summer (december to

One of the greatest attractions of this biome is the Serra da
Capivara National Park, located in Piauí State and 1067km (660
miles) from Recife. This is a semi-arid region with varied landscapes in the mountains, valleys and plains with savanna vegetation, which is home to unique and little-studied flora and
fauna. Visitors exploring the park’s canyons will find some 700
natural shelters and caves, home to an incredible collection of
paintings and engravings made by the prehistoric men who
inhabited the region at least 50,000 years ago. The Park is a
designated UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the age of its
archeological sites and the aesthetic quality of the rock art. The
best way to get there is by plane from Recife to Petrolina, followed by a road trip to the Park.

populated semi-arid regions on earth. a major portion
of the biologic assets of this region is found nowhere

and is noteworthy due to its surprising adaptation to
the semi-arid habitats. When the rain comes, the pools
are filled up and suddenly the whole caatinga becomes
a delicate green tapestry. in the prolonged dry season,
most of the thorny bushes, scrubs and contorted trees
lose their leaves, remaining a thicket of dull grey-white
trunks and twigs.
