HOG Pen News 2014 Vol. 3
From the Director, Kenny Sturm
Another “Miles for
Smiles” poker run has
come and gone. Like
all other poker runs, the
turnout is directly proportional to the favorability of the forecast for
the day. Unfortunately
the weather couldn’t
have been much worse
for our biggest event of
the year. Luckily the
day started out dry so
226 dedicated bikers
took a chance and registered for the ride.
The rain held off for a
while and most people
didn’t get wet until after
the first stop at The
Breakwall. Some of the
riders skipped one or
more stops, while most
braved the elements
and completed the
course. Jackson Station and DJ Bill Page
entertained the ‘crowd’
as they attempted to
dry off and get warm,
and we were able to
sell quite a few basket
raffle tickets and tip
boards.
Everyone that I spoke
with enjoyed the route
that Doug Roxberry
and Brian Kwitowski
developed. Some people who didn’t complete
the ride want to go
back at a later date and
visit some of the stops
that they missed.
But it was the dedication and hard work of
our Erie H.O.G. volunteers that made this
event successful, despite the drenching
rains. Tim Mannino,
with the assistance of
Jill Churchill, started
planning this poker run
during the early winter
months. It takes a lot
to coordinate venues,
music, and personnel
to ensure a smooth
running event.
When all was said and
done, we ended up with
over $6,000 to donate
to the MDA to help
send kids to summer
camp. We will be receiving additional funds
from the generosity of
the fine people from the
Edinboro-McKean
VWF. This money includes $55 donated by
June 15, 2014
Z102.3 radio from
their prize wheel,
$1,700 from banner
ad sales, and also
registration ‘donations’
and LOH basket raffle.
A sincere ‘Thank You’
goes out to our major
sponsors, HarleyDavidson of Erie &
Glenwood Beer. Kelly
& Susan donated coffee & donuts during
registration, $500 in
gift cards that we gave
away or raffled off and
much more.
Now, we take a well
deserved break and
enjoy the riding season before starting to
plan the 2015 MDA
Miles for Smiles Run.
Rest assured it will be
a good one. That’s all
for now
LET’S RIDE!

By now, we all know the mistake I made regarding the MDA Poker Run…I forgot to appoint a
liason to Mother Nature. Note to self for next
year… Nevertheless, there was a whole bunch
of brave and hearty souls that started, and finished, the ride. And if you missed Jill Churchill’s “Happy Dance” upon her arrival at the
VFW, it was priceless!
I have to say, when I decided to take this position, my biggest concern was organizing an
event I had only participated in once. But Jill assured me she, along with countless members of
Erie HOG, would step up and fill in where
needed. And was she right on! I want to thank
everyone for stepping up, pitching in, and making this years ride the success that it was. All of
your help was much needed and much appreciated!
And how about the Edinboro-McKean VFW?
What a great facility supported by a great bunch
of folks! They call it the Taj-Mahal of VFW’s,
and boy is it ever! The staff was everywhere,
very attentive and very helpful. If you recall,
they previously agreed to donating 50% of food
and beverage sales to the MDA. After speaking
with Manager Kerry-Lynn today and speaking
extensively with the Commander, Gerry Aggers
on Sunday, I was informed that the board will
consider a larger donation at their meeting on
the 16th. So stay tuned! Their leadership will be
present at our meeting on July 1st to make their
donation.
I do have one final request from the membership. If you have any suggestions or have any
ideas that you think will help the effort relative to
the Poker Run, please shoot me an email. If it’s
in writing, I am less likely to forget about it, then
I can bring it to the board for discussion. If you
have an idea for the final stop for next year, or
any stop for that matter, please pass it along. All
constructive criticism is welcome, and encouraged!
Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I
haven’t crossed 300 miles on the bike this year
yet, so enough writing and time for more riding.
Keep the shiny side up!

The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the
words of Stephen Decatur, “Our Country, in
dealing with other countries, may she always be
right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.”
From the
Secretary:
The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is
with their heart that they pledge allegiance to
the flag of the United States of America , and
the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for
all.
Ann Hodak
Hello All!
I was once again proud to be a part of the
Fallen Soldiers Picnic and Patriot Flag Ride
again this year. There is such a great feeling of
pride seeing everyone gathering together for a
common cause. We owe so much to those who
fought and who are still serving to protect our
rights and freedoms.
I came across this and realized I never knew
this. I hope you take the time to read this ...
“To understand what the flag draped coffin
really means ... Here is how to understand the
flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so
many widows and widowers:
Do you know that at military funerals, the 21gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in
the year 1776?
Have you ever noticed that the honor guard
pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the
United States of America Flag 13 times? You
probably thought it was to symbolize the original
13 colonies, but we learn something new every
day!
The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.
The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal
life.
The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance
of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a
portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.
The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for
as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him
we turn in times of peace as well as in time of
war for His divine guidance.
The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for
it is through the Armed Forces that they protect
their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without
the boundaries of their republic..
The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered
into the valley of the shadow of death, that we
might see the light of day.
The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and
Mothers. For it has been through their faith,
their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this
country great has been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he,
too, has given his sons and daughters for the
defense of their country since they were first
born.
The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the
seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity
and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the
Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely
folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them
of their Nations motto, 'In God We Trust.'
After the flag is completely folded and tucked in,
it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever
reminding us of the soldiers who served under
General George Washington, and the Sailors

and Marines who served under Captain John
Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the
United States, preserving for them the rights,
privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing
things that have deep meaning. In the future,
you'll see flags folded and now you will know
why.
I would like to take a brief moment to thank all
who have served (and who are still serving) as
well as to all of the Blue Star and Gold Star
families.
As always,
Peace, Love and Harleys

The Edinboro-McKean
Memorial Post 740
From the Editor,
Now that the MDA Poker
Run “Miles of Smiles” and all
that rain is over and many of
you had the good fortune to
visit the outside of the
Edinboro-McKean VFW, I thought it would be
appropriate to introduce you to the inside of
the facility. And some facility it is!
It is officially called the Edinboro-McKean
Memorial Post 740 and has been in existence since 1978. At that time, it was located
in McKean, Pa. In 1992 the Post moved to
the current location which originally occupied
48 acres. More recently an additional 12
acres were added, all helping to maintain the
rural setting for this sprawling facility. Much
of our time during the Poker Run last week,
was spent in the large pavilion (40 x 100 feet)
which contains a modern kitchen. Our bikes
were parked in a large paved parking lot including a specially designated Bikers Pad.
Thanks to Post 740 for providing this exceptional space to us at no cost for the Miles to
Smiles Poker Run. It was a very special event.
Special thanks go out to Commander Gerry Aggers and Manager Kerri-Lynn Sitter.
The VFW Post 740 is available through two
different options:
Active Membership is for veterans who have served on
foreign land and have received service ribbons.
Those serving active duty are
given free memberships
where all fees are paid by the
Post. The Post pays ¼ of the
Commander
fees for Lifetime Members
Gerry
Aggers
(the fees are age dependent).
Active members are members
of all VFW’s, worldwide.
Social Memberships are available to anyone
with a sponsor, and current members are more
than happy to sponsor new
members.
Membership fees are the
same for both Active and Social Members at $35 for the
first year and $30 for subsequent years. Manager KerriKerri-Lynn
Lynn Sitter says that the
Sitter
Woman’s Auxillary is very
active in providing events for the vets at the Soldiers and Sailors Home including Bingo and by
donating their time for visitations.
The facility is family oriented and the usual
crowds include singles, couples and families. It
includes a large horseshoe shaped bar, a banquet hall and
two large dining
rooms, one for
smoking and
one that is non
smoking. Lunch
is served daily
from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and dinner is from
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. featuring a very full menu
Page 6
with lots of specials and variety. There is also
an open menu served until 10:00 p.m. On
weekends, the kitchen is open from 11:00 a.m.
until 10:00 p.m. Happy hour is daily from 5:00
until 6:00 and there are daily drink specials. The
kitchen serves specials on Saturday
nights, for example
when we ate there recently, the special was
Prime Rib……..Yummy!
Also featured once a
month on Saturday
nights are live bands
whose taste usually runs toward Country Rock
and several times a year the real crowd pleaser
is a Polka Band!
Of course
there are
special celebrations on
Veterans
Day, Memorial Day,
Christmas,
including special kids parties on Christmas and
Easter and a Club Picnic in August.
The Post recently dedicated a large well
equipped softball field in honor of member Andy
Haryda. Softball games take place on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons and the
competitors must be 18 or older. Currently
there are 10 teams playing regular schedules
that will continue throughout the months of
June, July and August.

Know Your Limits
Anyone who participated in the 2014 MDA
Poker Run needs no introduction to riding in
wet…really wet weather. Of course living in Erie
can lend itself to some bizarre weather events
that could fill a library.
Our goal is to ride and have fun, not to punish
ourselves to keep with the Jones’s! If your riding skills could use some honing, driving in bad
weather is not the wisest of choices. Take a
safety class or maybe you just need some more
time in the saddle. Whatever it is, take it slow
and at a pace you feel comfortable with. Build
your confidence so you can ride and have fun.
Taking your car to the final stop assures you of
arriving safe, having fun without the worry of
driving home in the dark or inclement weather,
especially when you feel your two-wheel skills
are on the bubble.
Over the years we have all faced a decision as
to whether we should or shouldn’t ride. Comments such as; what will others say if I drove my
cage? Would the guys (or gals) call me a wuss?
All this sticks in the back of your mind as the
pressure mounts to join in when you know darn
well you’re putting yourself in harm’s way.
Maybe you’re a new rider and don’t have the
proper gear yet. Perhaps you just bought a new
bike and not quite as familiar as you would like
to be. How is your bike maintenance? I couldn’t
imagine riding Sunday in all that rain with iffy
tires. These are just some of the reasons you
shouldn’t exceed your comfort zone and ride beyond your limits.
Don’t be forced into riding beyond your limits by
anyone…including yourself. Practice putting
more miles under your belt at a time and pace
you feel comfortable with. Riding confidence
builds with time and more practice.
Regardless of bad weather, driving too fast in a
curve during a group ride, driving at night, or just
driving too many miles at a time, you need to
know how far you can push yourself and still feel
comfortable.
on a Successful
Staying within your limits when you ride will result in a safer and more enjoyable experience.

From the Ladies of Harley - Carla Georgal
It has been a busy time for the Ladies of Harley
in the month of May. We started out the month
on the annual LOH Wine Tour visiting nine wineries that supported MDA and the “Miles for
Smiles” event. Yes we even crossed state
lines! In North East, Pennsylvania we stopped
at Presque Isle Wine Cellars, Courtyard Winery,
Blue Iris Winery, Arrowhead Wine Cellars,
Lakeview Wine Cellars, and Penn Shore Winery. We ventured over to New York to the Johnson Estate Winery in Westfield and to the Sparkling Pond Winery in Ripley.
The entire staff at Scotland Yards was helpful
and pointed the members in the right direction
for the beautiful annuals and perennials. The
landscape of the property is so unique and
peaceful. LOH had a good time learning about
plants and flowers and how to successfully put
a beautiful flower pot together to be enjoyed all
summer long! Always remember, green side
up! Mr. Green Jeans would be so proud!
The wineries were patient and gracious as over
twenty women descended on the establishments. LOH enjoyed the day tasting wine and
snacks, along with purchases of the regions’
best wines and great wine related gifts. The wineries themselves donated forty-five (45) bottles
of wine to the MDA event as well as other wine
related items for the cause. We were, and are
so very grateful for their generosity.
The weather co-operated and a good time was
had by all! A special thank you to
Marie Catrabone for coordinating the Wine
Tour, along with Jackie McMichael’s assistance,
and to Debbie Wolz for procuring the school bus
for us! Without the bus, it would have been a
very long walk! To all who participated in the
Wine Tour a thank you to you for making it a
success and a fun day!
Later in the month LOH traveled to Scotland
Yards Greenhouse in Edinboro for an evening
of playing in the dirt (ok, soil). Nine members
gathered to check out the beautiful flowering
pots, hanging baskets, and wonderful variety of
plants, bushes, ornamental shrubs and trees.
The barn houses a great gift shop and LOH had
no qualms about checking it out.
We ended the month bringing together all the
baskets created and donated by LOH members
for the MDA basket raffle. By the day of the
event, June 8th, we had twenty-three (23)
unique baskets of every shape, size, color and
theme. The baskets made an impressive sight
on the tables at the last stop of the run which
was the VFW Post 740 on Route 98 in
Edinboro.
Page 13
The weather may have been
pretty soggy, but the spirits
of the riders who braved the
rain to participate in the
event, the members who donated and all the volunteers
made it a success. It is
great be part of such a wonderful group. A special
thank you to everyone at
VFW Post 740 who helped
make the rainy day a success for a good cause (along with the hot coffee
and paper towels).
Not to rest on our laurels, the June LOH meeting
will be held at Bootlegger’s
Bar and Grill (4935 East Lake
Road) on Tuesday, June 17th
at 6:30 p.m. Please plan on
attending. We have a lot to
discuss going forward into the
rest of the year. The Ladies
of Harley will be meeting in
the back dining room of the
restaurant and the gentlemen
are welcome in the front area.
New members “Don’t be shy.
“ Please join us! We ask that
everyone RSVP so we can have an accurate
count for dinner and seating. Hope to see you
all there!

Road Closure in Ohio
Route to Geneva on the
Lake
By Doug Roxberry
US4063055
“The Strip”
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)
has announced that Lake Rd. (Rt. 531) will be
closed this summer from June 1 until September. This is being done to widen the road and to
help stop the erosion that has been taking place
over the past few years.
Why is this important? This is the scenic route
most people take from Ashtabula Harbor to
Geneva on the Lake, AKA “The Strip”. The
detour is a long one, down US Rt. 20, filled with
lots of lights, traffic and headaches. Not to
mention missing out on riding along the lake
with all of its views.
So here is a faster detour. When coming out of
Ashtabula, West on Rt. 531, proceed until you
some to State Rt. 45 and turn Left (South).
Drive south to a flashing yellow traffic light
(approx. 2 miles), turn right unto North Bend Rd.
Travel West on North Bend for 3 miles until the
road ends. This intersection is Myers Rd. turn
right onto Myers Rd. and this will take you back
to Rt. 531 ( about 1 mile). You can then continue on your way to The Strip.
ODOT is also recommending, to avoid all
detours, to take I-90 to the Geneva/ Harpersfield exit (Rt. 534) and continue North to The
Strip. But who wants to run the freeway?
Regardless of what direction you travel, I just
wanted to give everyone a heads up as to this
detour.
Enjoy the summer!!!!

Have you ever heard….?
By Vroom
Have you ever heard someone say,
“I RODE TODAY!”
It is not just the words, it is the way they are
said and when they were said. It was said in a
loud whisper making sure that everyone heard
it, but trying to make it sound personal. It was
said in a proud boastful manner so you knew
that this was a special event. When you heard it
you were immediately envious, jealous and
skeptical. It was uttered at the beginning of a
Erie HOG Tuesday evening meeting at the
Dealership, so lots of bikers heard it.
So, what was the big deal? Well, it was said on
December 3, 2013. So what that means is that
this dude got his bike out of storage, unhooked
his trickle charger, and took a ride! (Hopefully
he checked the tires, gas, etc.) It also means
that he is either a nut, or a highly motivated individual and probably both.
On that day, the average temperature was 34
degrees F. 43 degrees maximum temperature,
there was a trace of show on the ground and the
roads were bare, the wind was hardly blowing at
3 mph but earlier in the winter season, we had
already had 48.5 inches of snow! So what was
this guy’s motivation? He wanted to be able to
say he did it! Those of us who heard the statement probably had mixed emotions, but I know I
was one who was envious.
Others might say, it was too cold, there was too
much gravel on the road, the salt would eat up
your bike and turn it into rust, on and on and on,
but I still wish I could have ridden that day.
Now that the temps are in the 70’s, the snow
has melted and the salt has dissolved, it is easy
to forget last winter, even though it was one of
the worst I remember. So, just get out there and
ride and don’t be afraid to say……
“I rode today!”
Be careful out there!
