TAIL OF THE DRAGON NORTH Rob Dean has scheduled the “Tail of the Dragon - North” event for Sunday, September 30. Take a scenic run in the Pennsylvania mountains. According to the PA Fall Foliage site, the north end of this run should be at fall foliage peak! Meet at Northtown Porsche in Williamsville at 8am. The total trip will take about 10 hours, at 360 miles. This drive is weather dependent so please watch our website for last-minute details. NORTHEAST LAKE TOUR Join Art Kriesen for a nice fall ride by Lake Ontario on Sunday, October 7. Art’s knowledge of the best back roads in the area is unsurpassed. This tour, not really a breakfast run but more like a coffee run, starts at Webster Park. Arrive 8:45am for a 9am start. The tour goes from the Irondequoit Bay outlet to Sodus Point with an early coffee stop in Pultneyville. Distance is about 70 miles. This is a fair weather tour as driving in the rain is usually not much fun. Look for a confirmation on Saturday, Oct. 6 on our website . SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 4 UPCOMING EVENTS FALL DRIVER EDUCATION @ WATKINS GLEN The mission and purpose of our Driver Education program is to provide a safe, structured and controlled teaching and learning environment. The PCA DE Program is designed so that participants can improve their driving abilities and acquire a better understanding of vehicle dynamics and driving safety. Participants will experience first-hand the capabilities of high performance automobiles in a controlled, closed-course environment and acquire skills that will enhance safer vehicle operation in all driving situations. The fall event will take place on October 8 and 9 at Watkins Glen. Details including registration information can be found on our webpage. Guests are welcome to attend free of charge to wander the garage and paddock, check out the cars, watch the ontrack activity, and sit in on a classroom session to see what these events are all about. Track entry is limited to those on the guest list – contact DE Chairman Bert Xander to get your name on the guest list. ANNUAL CHILI RUN This event is RAIN OR SHINE! Like last year, we have an enclosed pavilion so if it’s cold and rainy the fireplace will be cranked by the time everyone arrives so it will be warm. Join the Niagara Region PCA for a fun scenic drive to Letchworth State Park, the “Grand Canyon of the East” on Saturday, October 13. 9:00am – Meet at Garber Porsche, 3955 W. Henrietta Rd., Rochester. The club will provide a continental breakfast at Garber before heading out for the drive. 10:00am – Departure for Letchworth State Park. 1:00-3:00pm – Chili and BBQ lunch at the North Highbanks Pavilion at Letchworth. The club is providing lunch, no need to bring anything but your appetite, hiking shoes, and camera. Please RSVP to Rich DeAsis by Friday, October 5. Same time, same place, just a different day of the week this month. Please spread the word to anyone you know who might not have internet access. Also note that the FREE Niagara Region 50th anniversary shirts will be available for pickup at this meeting – all you have to do is show up to receive yours. Each primary club member receives one absolutely free as a ‘thank you’ for being a member. They’re only available thru the end of the year so get yours now. Fall is an ideal time for capturing lasting photos of your Porsche, so please consider submitting them for our annual photo contest. This year’s contest will be run much the same as in past years but with a twist to the judging. Judging will be interactive, with submitted photos posted and judged by club members on our group Facebook page. Submit your favorite three Porsche photos (rules and guidelines can be found on our club website) to me from October 1-31. I will post the photos in an anonymous fashion in a photo album on our Facebook page on November 1. Our club members will judge the photos from November 1-7 by “liking” their favorite photos. Photos with the most “likes” will win prizes to be awarded at our Fall Dinner on November 17. One prize per person. We also request your online participation in our upcoming club officer elections taking place October 1-31 for the 2013 – 2014 term. A link to an online ballot will be included in the October 1 and 15 broadcast emails, and snail-mailed to club members who have no email address on file with PCA. This year’s election is largely academic since only one person is running for each office. However, since our ByLaws allow for write-ins we must undertake the election process as required. Running for club President is Rich DeAsis, VP Tom Lyons, Secretary Sue Reesen, and Treasurer Hank Beamer. Please support their volunteerism efforts by casting your votes when you receive the ballot link. October is a great time to take in WNY’s fall foliage and we have some terrific driving events planned. There is a Northeast Lake Tour on the 7th, our Fall DE at Watkins Glen on the 8th and 9th, and the annual Chili Run to Letchworth State Park on the 13th (RSVP by Oct. 5). Check out all the details on our club website. Lastly, mark your calendars for our annual Fall Dinner on Saturday, November 17. Registration is now open and seating is limited. Last year over 100 people joined us for this end-of-year bash; we would love to see you there! Take care, Jim EDITOR’S NOTE: Want to advertise your business in Flatout? Well now you can. Well many of them are easy but volunteers that run events would like to “share the wealth”. If you have never run or helped at an event but would like to, let us know. We have lots of ways to help volunteers be successful with their events and volunteer activities. Check out the Volunteer-A Ganza information on the next page to see if there is something there you would like to lend a hand. Don’t see what you like and want to offer an alternative, that’s cool too. We will help you be successful just let us know. Well you couldn’t tell summer was ending based on the weather we had on September 1st, the day of the Dansville Balloon Festival. It was very sunny and very warm. We had a great crowd show up at Lowes in Henrietta. We had some Niagara folks from Buffalo in addition to the Rochester based people. We also had visitors from Upper Canada and Finger Lakes Regions. In all we had 15 Porsches, a Mini and a Celica all looking forward to the ride down to Dansville. Unlike prior years, we did not scout the route to the airport. We were going to “seat of the pants” the route this time. That is not to say we didn’t know which way were going to try and go. We had one of Babs’ routes from previous years all printed out but since we didn’t scout the route before the event, we were ready to make adjustments on the fly. We need not have worried. We managed to avoid the ROAD WORK signs for the most part (we saw some minor shoulder work that didn’t affect the driving lane). We were able to take the route we hoped. The roads we took offered some amazing views of the country side and the local lakes. They also offered some great Porsche driving sections. It was a very nice ride down. Marcelo A De Freitas agreed to be the last car in the line with his Mini. That turned out to be a great choice. His car with those blazing headlights was very easy to see from the front of the line, sometimes a mile away. We managed to get all the way to the Dansville airport without losing anyone. Thanx Marcelo. We made our way past the airport security check and out onto the runway where we were to display our cars for the bulk of the afternoon. We got all lined up against the edge of the grass and no sooner had we gotten everyone parked, we has spectators checking us out. Who doesn’t like to look at cool cars? The airport, as you can imagine, is a little short on shade. We brought our own. Tom and Babs brought a tarp and Joe Prizbach brought a pop up tent/cover. Between the two things were able to provide a shady oasis for people to relax over the course of the afternoon. The shade coupled with refreshments supplied by the club helped make for a very nice afternoon. The wind at the airport was gusty all afternoon and we were starting to doubt there would be a launch of hot air balloons later that day. I kept checking with event officials on the probability of a launch and the availability of access wrist bands that would allow club members access to the launch field and present them with the opportunity to help launch a hot air balloon. Local launch control said they would not know if the balloons would go up until about 5:30pm so we had to wait and see. Continued on next page SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 13 Dansville Balloon Festival Continued from previous page Around 4:30 we had to break camp and move our cars to make room for the thousands of people that would flood the runway so they could be up close to the fence next to the launch site. Tearing down camp took about 15 minutes and we moved our cars to the end of the runway where we would have easy access to the airport exit when the event was over. The appointed launch time came and the decision was made. The good news, the balloons would launch, the bad news, the Porsche Club could not get access wristbands so there would be no access to the launch site. We would have to watch the balloons launch from outside the fence. While missing out on helping to launch a hot air balloon was a bit of a downer, just seeing that many hot air balloons take off in such a short time was pretty rewarding. I don’t know what the official balloon count was but I think it was around 25 or so. With all the balloons that were going to launch in the air it was time to think about heading home. It was showing signs of getting dark so Babs and I left the runway and walked back to our car. When we got there all the other Porsches had already left, except one. Ian Webber’s 944 was still there. I saved my wrist bands from last year and since they were using the same kind this year I had one access band I could let someone use. Ian stepped up and made it out on the launch site where he got some beautiful pictures. His entire photo collection is available on our website. If you haven’t seen them go check them out. Having that left over wrist band worked out pretty well. I think I’ll save that wristband for next year because you never know what might happen. SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 14 Watkins Glen GP Festival Watkins Glen GP Festival By Tom Lyons You have heard me say this before but it is worth repeating. The Watkins Glen GP Festival is the best car event of the year. It is an up close and personal affair with sports cars and race cars. What could be better than that? The event is always the Friday after Labor Day which was September 7th this year. The GP Festival is a full day of happenings. Several local wineries sponsor driving events that include tours, rallies, food and fun. Things start pretty early, around 8:00am for instance, with the various tour groups meeting at the winery sponsoring their event. Some of the tour groups include the WGI Tour de Marque which this year was Mustang. Glenora Run features cars older than 25 years (mostly), Knapp Vineyards features roadsters, Red Newt has the Founder’s Tour which is open to any make or model of car. Don’t forget the Tour d’LeMons for those “unique” cars that don’t quite fit in the other categories. And new this year was the Hazlitt 1852 Vintage Motorcycle Rallye. Each of these groups along with the Concours d’Elegance entries gets to take 2 laps of the original road course that was first established in Watkins Glen in 1948. I heard reports that with the road work taking place on the course that it must have been very much like it was in 1948 ;-). Continued on next page SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 15 Watkins Glen GP Festival Continued from previous page To accommodate all these tour groups taking their laps of the old course, the village of Watkins Glen shuts Franklin Street down from about 1:00pm to about 9:00pm. Regular traffic is diverted a few blocks east of Franklin Street which turns Franklin Street into the world’s largest car centric street party. Event organizers have to chase people out of the street all day long as wave after wave of sports cars come roaring down the street during their laps. It is a true feast of both sight and sound. After all the tour groups have had their laps and have been parked is their respective areas it is time for the SVRA race cars to come down from WGI. That usually takes place around 4:00pm. I did not count the cars that were there but there were enough to line both sides of the street from the court house all the way back to 4th street. The race cars are on display for a couple of hours to give spectators time to wander all around and check them out. It is VERY difficult to get a picture of a car without having someone walk through the middle of your shot. Around 6:00pm event organizers again start chasing spectators from the street to try and clear the way for the race cars to take their reenactment laps of the old course before returning to WGI. It is very impressive seeing these cars in motion. Some cars date back to the original road course era. Others are clearly vintage cars. All of them are priceless. And these guys, and ladies, are going race them on Saturday and Sunday at WGI. It is inspiring to say the least. After the race cars have left to return to the track, the party continues with fireworks at 8:00 near the state park. The street opens up to traffic again about 9:00. So there you have it. A FULL day of car related events centered on sports cars. I gotta get signed up for one of the tour events for next year. My car really is 25 years old now. Maybe I’ll try and get hooked up with the Glenora Run. SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 16 SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 17 A Race Car Named #50 A Race Car named #50 track By Lou Betstadt Does that happen ... Note: My editor reamblings will be in RED to distinguish my comments from Lou’s and the teams remarks which are in black and indented. So if some one took a 3rd and car in 2nd get a 13/13 now/later but we have When we left the #50 team last month they had just returned from Mid Ohio where the results were pretty good but could have been better. A mix up in the running order dropped the #50 to second in class. Not willing to “settle” the team went How does one see that .. I guess the old mylaps still show the 3rd on an release/printed the results event that happen 2 years ago. But now a days with the championship does the mylaps / rennpoints get corrected? after getting the mistake resolved. Here is some of the give interaction between Lou and Tim O’Brien, Bryan Henderson and Michael Wingfield. Does this make sense The following is a note from Tim to Bryan and Michael. Hope all is well, Thanks Hello tim Was just asked a question about what happen after to results If an incident happened and it would result in the results needing to be changed after review... ie after we have printed the results and or left the Tim replies: Yes, race results can change after you leave the track. SEPTEMBER 2012 A Race Car Named #50 Post race penalties and corrections that change race results then have the results revised and new results are sent to the PCA website, uploaded to MyLaps, and corrections sent to Rennpoints. Lou’s response to the favorable findings. Hi Tim, Thank you for the clarification. I'll look forward to the Mid Ohio Second Red Sprint Race change in F Class. To the best of my knowledge we should see #50 moved from second in class to first in class. With all the information you are responsible for in the Club's Race Program it is no wonder you are swamped. Keep up the good work and thank you for all you do that keeps us on the track, racing! Regards, Lou While it certainly takes a lot of time, talent and perseverance on the track to win races, it also takes those very same qualities off the track to make a winning team. Not willing to let the results show anything but what really happened helped car #50 to move up in the standings. See the following pages for the original standings followed by the corrected standings. It pays to stick up for your self. Page 18 SEPTEMBER 2012 A Race Car Named #50 The original results show car #50 3rd overall and second in class Page 19 SEPTEMBER 2012 A Race Car Named #50 The Revised results show car #50 3rd overall but 1st in class. Page 20 SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 21 Where The Hell Are We ??? Are you ready for a yet another new challenge? Over the course of the coming 10 months I will include a picture in Flatout from a club event from 2011. Your job is to try and figure out where the hell we were. Each month at the bottom of the picture of each event will be a mini form. I am using the mini form to help me tabulate the answers. Fill out the mini form and copy and paste it into an e-mail and send it to me at [email protected]. I will collect your answers and score them. At some point before the fall dinner I’ll tabulate the answers and determine the winner. If there are multiple people with the same score the winner will be pulled from a hat and announced at the fall dinner. The contest winner will get a MAJOR AWARD! The mini form will look like this. Your Name: _________________________ Your email: _________________________ Where the hell are we: _________________________ Name of the event: _________________________ Date of the event: _________________________ (1 point is awarded for each correct answer. That’s 3 points per picture, 30 points total) for the year So you think you have the rules down? Well then let’s begin. SMALL PRINT WARNING!!!!!!! Contest is for Niagara Region PCA members only. Only one submission per member per month will be accepted. Submissions will be accepted until the next month’s Flatout is available on-line. Void where prohibited, your mileage may vary ;-) This months picture on next page SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 22 Where The Hell Are We ??? Continued from previous page So, Where The Hell Are We?? Hey Niagara Region, Pedro is looking for topics to write about and asked me for help. He needs topics that can be applied across the Porsche line not specific models. Topics like brakes and oil, which we already covered, are excellent choices. Do you have a topic you’d like to know more about? If you do have a topic send me an e-mail at: [email protected] and I’ll get your request to Pedro. Lets help Pedro help us. Tom Lyons SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 24 Technically Speaking! Editor’s note: Since we are rapidly approaching the end of the Porsche driving season, I thought I would re -print the following article on storing your Porsche. Storing your Porsche by Pedro P. Bonilla Gold Coast region PCA We are blessed here in Florida that we don’t have to store our cars for winter and we get to drive them all year. But, for many of our members, Florida is their second home. That means that they probably have to store their Porsche for an extended period of time either here or at their primary place of residency. So, here is the procedure for storing: Find a suitable storage facility. A garage is fine but you need to make sure that it will be dry, free from pests (mice) and preferably humidity-controlled, clean and secure. Thoroughly wash the exterior and finish with a nice coat of wax. Do this the day before storage so that the car has a chance to dry completely. Clean the interior by vacuuming carpets and seats and clean & treat the leather. Clean all glass inside and out. Really clean the wheels. Brake dust is corrosive. The best way is to remove each one and clean the inside as well. Use a product such as P21-S. Waxing the wheels afterwards is a great idea. Continued on next page SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 25 Technically Speaking! Continued from previous page Condition all the rubber including tires and all rubber gaskets. Use a good conditioner such as Gummi Pflege. Stay away from silicone-based “protectants”. Flush the brake/clutch fluid. This fluid is very hygroscopic, meaning that it absorbs water and must be replaced every 2 years or sooner. Change the Oil and Oil Filter. Old oil can have corrosive characteristics (acid). Top off all other fluids as well (coolant/antifreeze, windshield washer, power steering fluid, etc.). Fill the tank half way with gasoline. Add a good fuel stabilizer, such as StaBil and finish filling completely. By driving the car from the gas station to your storage facility the newly stabilized gas will start to run through the system, especially the injectors. Continued on next page SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 26 Technically Speaking! Continued from previous page Fully extract and lubricate the radio antenna mast (if present) then retract. Close all openings such windows, doors and A/C vents. You may want to put some cedar chips or moth balls in the cabin and around the outside to repel mice and other vermin. If storing in non-humidity controlled conditions, place a couple of desiccant bags in the cabin. Put plastic bags secured with rubber bands over the exhaust tips when they have cooled off. Over inflate the tires to 45-50 psi and leave the car on the ground. Don’t raise the car off the ground on stands. The suspension components are meant to bear the weight of the car, not hang from it. Leave the car in gear (or in Park for an automatic). Do not set the parking brake. For convertible tops leave them relaxed, by opening the main latch. This won’t keep the fabric stretched over an extended time. Same for Targa tops. Prop up the windshield wipers off the glass with a small block of wood or similar. Make sure you have any radio or alarm codes noted, then disconnect and remove the battery. On newer Porsches that have electrically operated trunks, make sure that the trunk cannot be closed completely by using a block of wood or similar to keep it propped open. The removed battery should be connected with a smart trickle charger such as a BatteryTender. Also top off battery fluid with distilled water. It should be kept in a cool, dry place and not on a cement floor. Continued on next page SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 27 Technically Speaking! Continued from previous page Cover the vehicle with a good quality car cover. Give her a goodbye kiss. I’m of the school that thinks that not starting the car during storage is best. I say this because most engine wear happens during the first few seconds after startup, while the oil builds up pressure and starts lubricating the engine internals. When you’re ready to take her out again, there’s very little that needs to be done, because most was done before: Remove the cover Remove the plastic bags over the exhaust tips Remove desiccant bags and vermin repellant from the cabin Remove windshield wiper props Secure the convertible or Targa top Replace and connect the battery Drop tire pressures to recommended psi Start the engine and let it warm up a bit Go for a drive! Continued on next page SEPTEMBER 2012 Page 28 Technically Speaking! Continued from previous page If you’re really concerned about that initial startup wear, the following is the procedure that the Porsche Museum uses for their cars on display: Remove the spark plugs Spray WD-40 into each cylinder through the spark plug hole Spray WD-40 into the air intakes Turn over the engine by hand a couple of turns with a wrench on the main pulley Every 3 months repeat above (leave spark plugs out of the engine) Every 3 months move the car a bit to change the position of the wheel bearings On a manual gearbox, shift into gear prior to doing above (No. 6) to move the transmission internals Drive the car every 6 months For more information on long and short-term storage as well as multiple DIY Projects and Maintenance, please visit our website at: [email protected].
